The Senior Class of Www LORETTO CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL SALILT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN THE I958 SAULTELIR Faith Builds a Bridge NGENERATIONS DREAMED THE CROSSING, DOUBTERS SHOOK THEIR HEADS IN SCORN , BRAVE MEN VOWED THAT THEY WOULD BUILD IT FROM THEIR FAITH A BRIDGE WAS BORN. D. B. STEINMAN No obstacle was too enormous in the eyes of the men, who driven on by a marvelous dream, laid the foundations for a magnificent structure--the Mackinac Straits Bridge. They had to cope with numerous problems such as the great expense, long distance to bridge, ice and snow, and always they were confronted with skeptics and doubters. But faith i.n an overpowering idea finally resulted in the appropriation of money, drawing up of plans and the mapping out of the route. The Bridge was to be built. 2 Wx S 4 e 3'- 5X1 r s xx.. F Dedicated to Our Hol Father, Pope Pius The builders vowed at canyon's rim, To bridge the torrent, deep and grim, Of strongest oak they wrought their plan- But soon a fire consumed the span. Their next attempt-an arch of stone By earthquake heave was overthrown. Then one of steel, conceived to last, Dissolved within an atom blast. While hearts were heavy with despair A Voice gave answer to their prayer: To bridge the gap from man to man Of Human Kindness build the span. The link thus wrought of priceless parts- Of love divine in Human Hearts-- l-las strength no evil force can sever: The Bridge of Kindness lasts forever. --D. B. Steinman Our Holy Pontiff with outstretched arms bridges the gap between God and Man as does the Mackinac Straits Bridge eliminate the gap between the two Michigan Pennisulas. In recognition ofhis untiring efforts in promoting world peace and bringing men closer to Our Di- vine Lord we dedicate this year's Saulteur to him. 5 Our Pastors St . Mary Church REV. ROBERT J. Keep them, for they are in the world, Though from the world apartg When earthly pleasures tempt, allure,-- Shelter them in Thy heart. Keep them, and comfort them in Hours of loneliness and pain, The Reverend David LeLievre, the first graduate of Loretto High School to enter the active army of Christ. As a student at Loretto, David LeLievre stood out in his class and set the pace for those to follow him. Not only was he Pres- ident of his class in his third and fourth years, but also was on the Varsity Basketball team in his sen- ior year, besides this he was active in many other school activities. Upon his graduation from Loretto High School in 1948 he entered the Diocesan Minor Seminary in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin. In 1952 he was transferred to the Major Semi- nary of the Sacred Heart in Detroit. He was ordained a priest of God in June of 1958. When all their life of sacrifice For souls seem but in vain. Keep them, and O remember, Lord, They have no one but Thee, Yet they have only human hearts, With human frailty. Keep them as spotless as the Host, That daily they caressq Their every thought and word and deed Deign, dearest Lord, to bless. The Mackinac Straits Bridge in its first phase of construction. As the Bridge had its beginning with the foundation piers, so in our FRESHMAN YEAR do we begin to shorten the gap between God and ourselves. Just as the cement is molded to form huge piers which are a foundation for the Bridge, so in our FRESHMAN YEAR our characters are molded to form the base for the Christian lives we will lead after Graduation. 9 , .,,r me 1- r ' ' ' :vm bad? So, in our SOPHOMORE YEAR the virtues are there all that has to be done is to develop and strengthen them. The Catholic Church is the tool that accomplishes this. As head of the Church Militant, Pius XII sets the dies that are to mold our characters The model from which all the dies are made is Christy the end- products from all the molds are CHRIST -LIKE CHARACTERS. 12 Sophomore elebrities SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: SEATED: Gayle Tavern, Secretaryg Shirley Ann Jacobsen, Treasurerg Judy Barber, Vice-President. As you get an overall view of the Bridge in one of its final stages of completion, likewise in your JUNIOR YEAR you can look back and scan over your past actions. Mistakes you have made in the past will keep you from making the same mistakes in the future. As your final year draws closer the pieces of your character are there and ready to be fit together to form a character like Christ's. This done, the gap will be closed and we will be able to face the trials and tribulations of the world with strong Christ-like Characters. 16 Junior Joys SEATHD: Ann Askwith, Vice Presidentg Carol Grady, Secretary. With graduation the door is opened and we step out onto the Bridge of Life. So, commences our long trek in search for perfect happi- ness. Crossing the Bridge will be tedious and sometimes not to our liking, many times we will want to jump over and join the flowing river of lost soulsg but we have an advantage over others--we are graduates of a Catholic High School. This distinc- tion gives us the strength to persevere. At the end of the Bridge is the at- tainment of our goal, perfect happi- K ness with God. The light shining be- fore us guides us along the narrow and hazardous bridge of life. This light is the Catholic Church with the Pope at its head. The power producing the light is Catholic Education. So, not only does the Mackinac Bridge stand as a monument to the ful- filled dreams of men but also it re- presents the Bridge between God and ourselves which sooner or later we must cross. The stronger our Catholic Education the stronger the Bridge and the more sure we are ofcrossing over it. Carey Nason in the capacity of President, Russell Payment as Vice-President, Robert LaLonde as Treasurer and Rose Marie Green as Secretary led us through our Sophomore Year 11955-56j. For the second ye ar Loretto entered the Upper Pennisula Science Fair at Marquette with seven of her students competing. In our Junior Year U956-57j Adella Blain was 32 elected President, Ralph LaCoursiere held the office of Treasurer and Maxine Synett was Secretary. We played host to the School at our Halloween Dance. We ended the school year socially by honoring the outgoing Seniors at a Banquet held at the Holiday Inn. We commenced our Senior Year 11957-58Q with bang when we held the Freshman Initiation. Ralph LaCoursiere lead the class through the many activi- ties as President, Robert LaLonde, Vice -President, Marla Maclviaster, Treasurer, and Carey Nason, Secretary. Once again we thrilled the school with our Semi-Formal Christmas Dance, the December Dream. We made a very inspiring closed retreat under the guidance of Father Bassett at Marygrove. We reached the heights in fun at our Junior-Senior Prom. Sorrowfully we waved goodby to Loretto at Graduation and fifty-five Seniors commenced their journey across the Bridge of Life. 3 ,-4 Maureen Fenlon takes her class on an imaginative tour through the Riviera via World History. NATIONAL l'lQzRSOCgY X 'I e il 1 OUVC1' Patterson Del Blain I Darlene LaPlante Brian Fenlon i l I 4 la t S Q 741 Q The question is asked, Who will be the first to conquer outer space? We seem quite content now that we have the Explorer but we cannot allow ourselves to slacken in the race for the conquest of space. Encouraging scholarship in students so they may go on into Science and other important fields and become the future leaders of the United States will keep us in the race. The National Honor Society is an organization which has rallied to this cause. The object of our Loretto Chapter of Loretto Catholic Central High School is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the develop- ment of character in the pupils of Loretto High School. In order to be eligible for membership a student must be of Junior or Senior standing, maintain a Scholastic average of 850111 and be outstanding in Service, Leadership and Character. The National Honor Society Pledge sums up its ideals very well. I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National honor Society to which I have been elected, I will be true to the principles for which it stands, I will be loyal at all times to my school, and will maintain and encourage high standards of Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service.
