school history In this, our Silver Iubilee edition of the Loretto, we honor Mother Praxedes Carty and the first Sisters whose untiring efforts have culminated in the Loretto Academy we know and love today. With only the west wing completed in 1923, the doors were first opened to a limited number of girls from El Paso and the surrounding country. At that time the small community of Sisters lived at St. Ioseph's Academy and in the bungalow on the Loretto campus. The first Mass at Loretto was celebrated in the bungalow by Rev. H. D. Buchanan. Before the High School section was finished, classes were held in the convent building. lm- portant functions such as graduation services, were held in St. Patricks Cathedral. lt was there that the first senior class of thirteen under the guidance of Sister M. Antonina, first Directress, was graduated in 1924. On March 30, 1924, the Rt. Rev. Anthony I. Schuler laid the corner stone of the chapel and blessed the foundations. Since then Loretto Academy has made steady progress until, fifteen years ago, the Whole building was opened and the classes moved to their present locations. The most important event of these years has been the Silver Iubilee celebrations in 1948, which honored all the sisters who have sacrificed themselves for the furtherance of Catholic education in the Southwest. Those who have served as Superiors here during these twenty-five years are Mother M. Praxedes, Sis- ter M. Genoveva, Sister M. l-lubert, Sister M. Felicitas and the present Superior, Sister M. Rich- ard. The High School Principals have been Sister Antonina, Sister Pierre, Sister Menadora, Sister Christina M., Sister Marian Alberta, Sister Margaret Loyola, and Sister M. Edwardine, the pres- ent Principal. Sister Margretta and Sister Anna Margaret have been the Grade School Princi- pals. These are but a few from the long roster of Sisters who have passed through the halls of Loretto Academy. l to mother praxedes a dream was bom upon this waste of sands. which came alive, with faith and working hands. a monument was built where only sagebrush grew. within its walls youth found knowledge. fine and true. let us pause to remember twenty-five years ago. the nun that made possible the birth of loretto. -By Gloria Aguirre, '51
