Of nt el, lle Pete? S school history In this, our Silver Iubilee edition of the Loretto, we honor Mother Praxedes Carty and the first Sisters whose untiring efforts have culminated in the Loretto Academy we know and love today. With only the west wing completed in 1923, the doors were first opened to a limited number of girls from El Paso and the surrounding country. At that time the small community of Sisters lived at St. Ioseph's Academy and in the bungalow on the Loretto campus. The first Mass at Loretto was celebrated in the bungalow by Rev. H. D. Buchanan. Before the High School section was finished, classes were held in the convent building. lm- portant functions such as graduation services, were held in St. Patricks Cathedral. lt was there that the first senior class of thirteen under the guidance of Sister M. Antonina, first Directress, was graduated in 1924. On March 30, 1924, the Rt. Rev. Anthony I. Schuler laid the corner stone of the chapel and blessed the foundations. Since then Loretto Academy has made steady progress until, fifteen years ago, the Whole building was opened and the classes moved to their present locations. The most important event of these years has been the Silver Iubilee celebrations in 1948, which honored all the sisters who have sacrificed themselves for the furtherance of Catholic education in the Southwest. Those who have served as Superiors here during these twenty-five years are Mother M. Praxedes, Sis- ter M. Genoveva, Sister M. l-lubert, Sister M. Felicitas and the present Superior, Sister M. Rich- ard. The High School Principals have been Sister Antonina, Sister Pierre, Sister Menadora, Sister Christina M., Sister Marian Alberta, Sister Margaret Loyola, and Sister M. Edwardine, the pres- ent Principal. Sister Margretta and Sister Anna Margaret have been the Grade School Princi- pals. These are but a few from the long roster of Sisters who have passed through the halls of Loretto Academy. l to mother praxedes a dream was bom upon this waste of sands. which came alive, with faith and working hands. a monument was built where only sagebrush grew. within its walls youth found knowledge. fine and true. let us pause to remember twenty-five years ago. the nun that made possible the birth of loretto. -By Gloria Aguirre, '51 N 'I '! !'v F5 Q, Eff Q62 N'-5 T 'T x H gms womb Yfo 51-vm? Beary mike Guillermincz Bunsow Class President A quiet conscience makes one so serene. ,QAWJ senior class history The class of '49 will leave Loretto with confidence in the foundation which they have received in four joyous years. Their attitude has changed vastly from the apprehension with which they looked forward to the horrors of the '45 initiation. For two days glamour pusses and sleepy-time ga1s roamed the halls, running to their sponsor, Sister M. Ursula, for protection against the cruel Sophomores, During the course of the year they won two honors-the loving cup for the square dance competition and the Praxedian crown for Freshman President, Elva Knopf. Next came the all-school Halloween festival which they planned. They rounded out their first year with a skating party honor- ing the Seniors. As super-confident Sophomores, under the direction of Sister M, Feli- cian, they made diabolical plans for the Freshman initiation. Then they gave the uniform party. Long hours of Work were spent canvassing the city for subscriptions in order to win the Prax drive. The hayride to Asca- rate Lake, given for Seniors ended the Sophomore year. The Iunior year began with the recapture of the loving cup for square dancing. Delegates who represented the Iuniors at the Press Convention at Loretto Heights in Denver were Peggy Mulchay, Elva Knopf and Paula Miles. Carol Shipley, Helen Cleve, Paula Miles, and Alyn Brown were in the Iunior-Senior play, Family Tree , directed by Mrs. W. H. Ball. The proceeds from the play helped to pay for the Prom, given at the Fort Bliss Officers' Club, under the direction of Sister M. Charlesana, their sponsor. At last the most wonderful word imaginable could be applied to them- Seniors. A year crammed full of activities began with a pageant presented during the Silver Iubilee celebrations. The Christmas party, highlighted by a play, At the Feet of the Madonna , which was directed by the Senior sponsor, Sister M. Felician, was given next. The next dramatic attempt was the Senior Follies , a vaudeville show. Other wonderful memories are the lanuary Retreat, under the direction of Reverend Wm. Dillon, Ditch Day, the farewell parties, and finally the Prom. The Seniors will also remember Teen-Topics, a radio program which they helped establish. Carol was the Loretto representative to the broadcasts over KSET. A moment which stands out in their thoughts is the crowning of the May Queen by Prefect Peggy Mulchay, And now with only graduation to look forward to, we say Good-bye and Thanks. The class of '51 started an active high school career by spon- soring the all-school Halloween party when they were Freshmen, under the guidance of Sister Mary Ursula. This was followed by a carnival, given for the Bishops Belief Fund, which netted more money than any other event. ln the first activity of their Sophomore year, the girls showed their true Christmas spirit by slaving over gifts for the Indian Mis- sions, and provided five large baskets for needy families. Biggest event of this year was their rip-roaring Western Val- entine party for the high school and faculty. This was followed by the Book Week assembly, which featured a Tom Sawyer skit, various other short plays, book reviews, and choral readings. For the Vocation Week program small groups of girls presented his- tories of several religious orders and skits about religious voca- tions. This year the Sophomores gave a Dance Review and Mexican Dinner for the Bishops Belief Fund. And now with their Sopho- more year drawing to a close, they look forward to being UPPER CL.ASSMEN. 2 A Yr f' fm 5, Ji Ed mr, . 6555 'X'oa1ee6YB0'4504'- G oxexzxovoqw I ' xxxaxws 965' good' gocoeol mice o 'boQ4'e64r kfxc dw. oxmw 620- 4 6 Oqxwxgc x5'.QNeoe+O90104'- ew xc' ' 4,'Neo,0eiixe.
