Middle School Principal Not Pictured: Sr. Susan Swain. Lower School Principal Loretto is a place for learning- learning not only by reading books, but also by experiencing life and building relationships. Each student is given the chance to grow in an environment which emphasizes individuality. In a world filled with uncertainties and insecurities, Loretto helps the student to understand responsibility and the freedom which accompanies it. 4 Above: South Pod Mrs. Ruff, Cathy Morgan and Virginia Bagby Left: East pod Mrs. Brown, Rich Hinton Below: West Pod Ms. Zwang, Barbara Keuffer 6 Beth Bartee Timmy Baum Heather Gernhardt Leanne Dollarhide Damian Payiatakis Lisa Smith Marie McBride Lindsay Simmons Cassie Castleberry Stacy Herriage Juc, r Eric Lee Ben Pruett William Tucker Brian Raimen Chris Walters Justin Acker Alyssa Bell Sean Elben 8 Kari Jackson Mike Gaffney Danielle Jagoda Bruce Kinney Bobby Baum Heather Kinney Brandon Jackson Jennifer Cavanaugh Elaine LaBach Ryan O’Shaughnessy Sarah Miskew Benjamin Rasmussen Christopher Vaccaro Sh4.; Joy Collins Petrina Galamba Craig Hines 10 Steve Martin Laura McCormick Susan Sharp Laura Stein Alex Stern Amanda Boehm Matt Carpenter Jennifer Chen Megan DeArmond Gretchen Derting Julie Eisman 9 Amy Gabel Christine Hodes Cameron Garrison Susie James Sharon Keairnes Autumn Shurin Jan VanDinther Rachel Kierst Barby LeWandowski Brenda Smith Eva Williams Kathryn LaBach Joe Perroni Shelly Springer Scott Wright At Rachel Sheehan 4 Qk Michael Stein Andy Yanes 13 14 M.S. Our professional ama- teurs are as follows: Top from left: Eric Moore, Brent Stevens, Sherry Jenkins, Cole Martin Bottom from left: Anna Gosnell, Nick Barrett, Matt Crowe, Steve Judd, Jim Bednar, Ann Sullivan, Gary Packingham FORENSICS 1983 This year Loretto became an affiliate chapter of the National Forensics League. Our school advanced surprisingly well for a first year team. The small team of only ten members competed in three tournaments; held at Raytown South, Belton and Hickman high schools. The various members of the team entered the tournaments in the duet acting, poetry, dramatic interpretation and humorous interpretation categories. Loretto placed within the top five in several of these categories at every tournament. Team members: John Whitaker, Jennie Hanna, Craig Bushman, Jeremy Kohn, Joni Bishop, Anna Gosnell, John Keyser, John Kyger, Michael Bonahan, and Wendy Klinger o The Loretto Champagne Auction is an annual fun- draising event. November 6, 1982 was the date of the seventh auction. The auction was held at the school, the architectural structure of the building lends itself to such an event. The gymnasium was set up with tables, chairs and the auctioneer’s podium for the oral auction. Deli- cious hors d’oeuvres and, of course, continually flowing champagne was also available in the gym. The main hallway was lined with tables containing items for the silent auction. Planning for the auction began even before faculty and students had returned for school in September. Enthusiastic parent leaders were organizing the years activities and planning ways to offer their expertise. The time, energy and talent these caring parents put into the auction was most definately beneficial. The 1982 auc- tion was the most successful ever. Over $22,400 was raised for Loretto and its students. 47 Look Mr. Cartwright, this is my crayfish.” Thank You, Mr. guest speaker.’ I know my program is around here somewhere.” ‘Wait a minute, could you show me how to do that again I s Louise Abner Virginia Clark ENGLISH W Robyn Trent Marhta Fly 55 Craig Bushman Megan Cartwright Karen Brewer Donette Coleman Reeve Good Rhonda Herr Jeremy Kohn Melinda LaRue Cole Martin Eric Moore Maureen Reiter Marion Salyer Jeanne Sigg Maida Swensson Craig Bushman shows his dedication. Bob was our main man this year, 13.8 pts. and 10 plus rebounds a game. OUR SENIORS Billy was Mr. Hustle giving 110% all the time. Our best one-on-one stopper. Jim was our best outside shot, and helped run the show. Kevin was Mr. Defense, using his quickness and jumping ability to close the middle. 69 For as long as I can remember, the sophomores class has put on a Halloween Party in the auditorium. On this day strange people look even stranger. The traditional ghosts, witches, and clowns always show up for this event. There is a chilling horror film shown followed by refreshments prepared by the class. And of course there is always a costume contest. This years costume contest included three catagories, most creative, most unusual, and all around best. Christina Eldridge and Chris McQueeny (above) went as Siamese hillbillies and won most creative. Chris Marshall (not shown), Barry Sellars, and Eric Hilt (left) dressed up as women and won most unusual. John Hudson (below) walked throughout the school portraying one of his inventions, Smokey Lexington and won all around best. 71 FATHER DA UGHTER MOTHER SON BANQUET DANCE One of the upper schools biggest traditions is the annual Father- Daughter, Mother Son Banquet held in early spring. This year the banquet was held on Thursday, April 7th, attracting most of the up- per schoolers and their parents. There was a excellent dinner fol- lowed by music and dancing. Kids never knew their parents could be so much FUN! JR. SR. PROM 1983 The spring prom was held May 26 on a beautiful Friday night at the elegant Westin Crown Center hotel. Most of the Juniors and Seniors attended the dinner dance and were dressed to the hilt for this special occasion. After the delicious banquet was served, the music started and the fun began! When's the food coming?” The Senior Banquet is an annual farewell event given by the faculty for the members of the Senior class. This year the banquet was held at Princess Gardens, a delicious Chinese restaurant frequented by many Loretto stu- dents. A wonderful time was had by all. SENIOR AWARDS ASSEMBLY The very last event of the schoolyear for Seniors is the awards assembly. During this special event Seniors are awarded by their teachers for their excellence, their exceptional efforts or simply their perseverance. The Lor- etto Award, given annually to the Senior who most exemplified the Loretto ideal, and who worked to improve and maintain the school’s traditions and goals, was appropriately given to Leslie Grady. Leslie attended Loretto for 13 years, held several offices and organized many successful events. The assembly made for a memorable last day for the Seniors. Raul Calandria, Loretto’s AFS student from Uruguay for the school year 1982 to ’83 has been a special friend to Loretto upper schoolers, the seniors, and his host family, the Kygers. In June, he will return to his home, Montevideo, a city in the southern-most part of Uruguay. Although he has already graduated from high school, he took a full schedule of classes at Loretto which included Computers, Geometry, Art, Politics, Philosophy, and U.S. History. He had 3 years of basic English in High school but really learned to speak it well here. His high school, a 6-year program, required a uniform, no beard, and short hair. It was harder than Loretto and he had to pass a very tough exam to graduate. “At Loretto,” he said, “the teachers care too much for you.” Rauls mother is a nurse, his father is a lawyer, his sister, who is 25, is a medical student, and his 17-year old brother is attending school in Texas with the Youth For Understanding organization. He will be returning to Uruguay at about the same time as Raul. His family apartment at home is one block from a beach on the Rio de la Plata, and he loves to go there when he is not busy. Also fun to visit are the ocean beaches about 70- miles away. He will return to Uruguay in June to begin studies at the University of Architecture. He hopes someday to be designing buildings, houses and apartment complexes. In Kansas City, when he is not in school, Raul says his favorite activity is to be social, to be with people. When asked what he will miss at Loretto, he said, “Everybody. It is hard to say ‘Hello, I’ll be here for a year,” and after that is over, it is hard to leave. It will be practically impossible to be able to see everyone again. It is hard to say goodbye to 80 everything.” ?4k 83 Best Artists: John Whitaker and Anna Gosnell Best Sense of Humor: Maryanne Backstrom and Rob Stewart Best Athlete: Christina Eldridge and Hal Marshall Best Dancers: Marla Moore and David Disney Best Dressed: Christina Eldridge and Clint Roubik Best Smiles: Raul Calandria and Jennie Hanna 85 89 ■■ 94 95 % THE MOST LIKELY Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely Most Likely to marry a male stripper Most Likely to wreck her car within a year Most Likely to marry a musician Most Likely to become professional groupies Most Likely to work for Eastern Onion Most Likely to never be elected to another office again Most Likely to become a famous sex symbol Most Likely to become a male stripper Most Likely to never take another ceramics class Most Likely to own an 18 bar Most Likely to be a regular at Kevin’s bar Most Likely to become a Solid Gold dancer Most Likely to live in a grass hut in Hawaii Most Likely to become a member of the CIA Most Likely to live happily ever after Most Likely to be the subject of a Natn’l Enquirer article Most Likely to become a Loretto teacher Most Likely to become a Loretto Librarian Most Likely to become a model for Long Silky Most Likely to marry an M.U. football player Most Likely to marry a basketball star (over 6 feet) Most Likely to become a Palm reader Most Likely to have African Sleeping Sickness Most Likely to manage Taco Johns Most Likely to never edit another yearbook to become a punk rocker to become a Fix-it man to be deported to become G.H.’s next Bobbi Spencer to drive in the Indy 500 to live on a horse farm in Texas to become a Playboy playmate to become a Playboy photographer to join the Army to be late to her own funeral to become a Famous guitarist to become used car salesmen Monica Liston Michelle Katf Eileen MacNaughton Hal Marshall John Whitaker Laura Marshall David Disney Jacqui Matthes Kevin Haas Chris McQueeny Marla Moore Lisa Ost Donny Hudson Mike Overstreet Gary Packingham Ann Sullivan Lisa Ramsey Kristin Reed Clint Roubik Susan Reitz Yvette Rogers Lisa Shumaker Lisa Sikorski Bryan Smith Robert Stewart Susan Stice Leslie Grady Kristin Wendt Kris Amick Jim Bednar Raul Calandria Leslie Cartwright Christina Eldridge Lisa Faulkner Charmian Ferro Bob LaRue Bill Groner Jennie Hanna John Hart Frank Hughes Maryanne Backstrom Karin Sisk Sarab Hussain Anna Gosnell 100 -for -YKfc ?mtsV Vt Vor«r . x_V Stt • % • GATE-SAND .5on,s£ C2hU39 to Z.USTATE 4 3-3880 Zi 6r oA in 383- 7SL ZooJuj- iOiTtrr U 0 Q9 iMiisvon-PW 353-5 SO ovvot. vow v £ 6 ? 70StRVE YOU° Ar eRiCAN TOrmoJ U3to-r Co.,IAK. 3 3 rr a,nS+rtt+- T« -816-1 1- kar ,5 v-S Ci ■Rj, Ro- 0’S 9W1W J-C.
