So, remembering that history to many people is a rather dull subject except to those who have taken part in it personally, the history of the class of 1947 will be as brief as possible, and will touch upon those subjects which are of significance not only to the class but to others. According to the findings of students of educational statistics, it is obvious that the coming together of any Sophomore Class of a High School represented selected and quality mate- rial. This is true even in those few cases where the individuals are coming against their own will and to please someone else. For various reasons the members of the incoming class of September, 1944, represented, we believe, a particularly promising group. Wie believe we are safe in asserting that all of this entering class would be worthy of special mention of some kind, if time permitted us to make a note of their special qualities of sturdy charac- ter, genius and personality. Early in our Senior High School life, a class organization was formed and the following oflicers selected by way of class leadership: Sophomore Year:- President-Donald Sweimler. V ice-President-Paul LeV an. Secretary-Eugene Hull. These have been succeeded from time to time at our animal elections as follows:-and it is not without good reason, as you may well guess, that a number have succeeded themselves several times-Paul LeVan, Roy VVeinhold. and Phoebe Zechman have served in their re- spective oflices in our junior and Senior years. VVe believe that the experience gained and the leadership developed will be of decided ad- vantage in the years to come. How often it happens that men and women of affairs who have taken their places in the world are recalled to have been ollicers in their class groups at school or in a class activity. Socially, our activities have been all that could be expected of us and, perhaps, all that it was wise for us to undertake without infringing upon the more serious business of class- room, study hall, laboratory and workshop. Among the outstanding social affairs to which we will all look back with happy memories are doggie roasts, hikes, dances, Senior class plays and the Prom. And last, but not least, our Commencement and Class Night activities. Besides this, not a few of our class have had time and energy for other things, and have shared in the work of the Chorus, Band, Y.NV.C.A. and Y.M.C.A. The Class of 1947 has clearly held its place in the sun. However, we have visioned clouds upon various occasions, as well, and at this time, we would voice our sorrow that it has been 29 A m NYYYYYXNNY NYXNYYYXNXNNNN'X'X'X'X'NNNNXNNX'X'XN'XNX'X'YYYYX'X'XN'XNYXNNXXXXXX SENIOR CLASS HISTORY cconti our fate that the Grim Reaper has found occasion to come into our midst and touched two of our number on the shoulder and beckoned them onward. In Memory of Katlzryn Sfozidt and Gerald Dietrich STILL XVITH US Not lost, not dead, not gone, not even sleepingg Though we have lain them in their graves with weeping :- No sharp despair our sorrowing hearts can till, For they are with us still. Still with us, in a thousand tender fancies, In memories dear of old-time words and glances, Still with us, but forever freed of any pain, No care of suifering to weary them again, Still with us at wakening of the day, Still with us, in the twilight shadows gray, Still with us, in the sunshine of God's faceg Upholding them, the same almighty arm Is shielding us, tho' the evening shadows fall Still with us, in the land where we shall rest XVhen a little further on have pressed- There, just as tender and true as ever, They shall be with us still forever. As a class, we feel that we have been especially favored in executive and faculty leadership. XV ho of us will not always feel a deep warmth of feeling and tenderness for Mr. Steckel, our Supervising Principal, and Mrs. Lambert, our class advisor, and for all other teachers who helped us in our grave moments. Our class motto is Not for self, but for all. Gur class colors are Dubonnet and Silver. A history does not deal with the future. Its function is to tell of the past and the present, but we trust we shall be pardouedif we pause for a moment and, with hand-shaded eyes, look into the years beyond. VVhat we see may more truly belong to the class prophet, but we cannot refrain from ex- pression of the belief that no class ever has or ever will go forth from this institution with a liner and clearer record than has been made by the graduating class of 1947. And, fur- ther, we have tirm confidence that in the VVho's VVho of the years ahead many of our IILIITI- ber will appear and reappear. and that all, without a single exception, will find the lasting satisfactions which a life well lived is bound to hold. It seemed like ages until that Saturday night came. I looked for- ward with anticipation to see the class back together again. As we entered the ballroom, our hostesses, Frances Hiester and Marian Emerich, greeted us. Frances has a very successful beauty shop in Reading, while Marian is de- signing dresses in New York. Among the first guests to arrive was our class president, Paul LeVan, who is now a famous chemist. He escorted Betty Mae Bailey, who is now a supervising nurse at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia. Next to arrive was our class secretary, Phoebe Zechman, and her escort. Phoebe is now teaching Home Economics at her old Alma Mater in Sinking Spring. Next on the list were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hull. Eugene is now the head postmaster in New York City. W'e soon heard the noise of the class musicians. James Feeg now has his own orches- tra and is playing for our dance. Mildred Manbeck arrived at the same time, being the solo trumpet player in Ji1nmy's orchestra. Mickcy's wish came true last year when she conducted the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Unger were next to arrive. Mrs. Unger was the former Luella Swavely. The Ungers have just returned from a trip around the world, which was Mrsi Unger's ambition. Donald Roeder and a beautiful blonde were the next to arrive. Donald is now a noted lawyer in New York. ' Sara Hoffert, who is now a Red Cross Nurse, arrived with Lt. Marvin Schonour. Lt. Schonour is now stationed at a nearby airfield and was fortunate enough to be able to escort Sara to the dance. Next to arrive was Lt. Q j. g.j Roy VVeinl1old and a beautiful brunette. It seems that Roy had no time to marry because he is an instructor in Electrical Engineeringin the Navy. True to the Navy saying, Buddy has a girl in every port. 33 A go NYXNYYYYYXA'YX'X'YX'YXNNXN'YXNYYYYYYYYYYYX'YYYYX' NYYYX'XNYYNX'YX'X'XXXXXXX CLASS PROPHECY CCont.l Shirley Stief, who is now an Airline Hostess, did not have a Hight scheduled for that night, and arrived with the handsome pilot of the ship to which she was assigned. As the dance was well under way we heard the lau.hter of the three inseparables, Lu- cille Longenecker, Anna Mae Grimes, and Doris Gring. They arrived with their es- corts from New York. Lucille is now an airline hostess with T.VV.A. Doris is a Med- ical Secretary to a very prominent doctor in New York. Anna Mae is a Laboratory Technician at New York General Hospital. The three girls now share an apartment in New York City. ' The next couple we saw enter the door was a tall, dark, and handsome man, and a tall, beautiful, flaming redhead. We recognized the couple to be Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lutz. Ralph it seems is a very capable draftsman at Metropolitan Edison Company. W'e thought someone was missing, and after taking account of everyone there, we real- ized it was Helen Schr0eder's vitality which had always helped to make a success of our school functions. just then she arrived with her husband-which she had made her career. V The next sounds we heard were those of an engine. They were those of Donald Sweim- ler, who has his own Engineering Company on the outskirts of Philadelphia. With him was his short, dark-haired fiancee. Next to arrive was Virginia Barnett. True to the saying, Ginny, who is a very capable secretary, has also proven herself to be a capable selector of handsome men. She ar- rived with her boss. b By the time we had greeted everyone and had stopped to talk for a few minutes, we realized the evening was almost over. The next person we saw was Shirley Eckenroad, now a dietician at Billing's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Shirley, of course, arrived with her husband, who for the past three years of their marriage, has been trying to get Shirley to functions on time. XfVe always thought Shirley was last to arrive, but it seems John Ritter's punctuality has been getting worse. John is now an Air Corps Chaplain. A few of the members of the class are wondering if John ever got to his first sermon on time. After everyone had arrived and a few words were spoken about by-gone years, the dance was over. Time certainly does fly when you are talking to friends whom you haven't seen for a long time. We bid everyone farewell after having decided to have another reunion in the form of a Formal Dance in ten years. The members of the Hand and the liastern District Band of the l'.S.M.A. were happy to be represented in the All-County Band and are eagerly looking forward to the future years of representation in this Hand hy more of its members. 57 I m a g' O 5SSSSQSSQSQSSSSSSSQSQSSSSSSSSSSXSSSSSSS SSSSSSSQSSQSSSSSQS Sitting-J.
