STEPPING AHEAD Rick Galanits ponders his future. Rev. Msgr. Francis L. Sampson, a retired major gener- al who served as the Army’s chief of chaplains from 1967 to 1971, delivered the 1986 commencement address at Loras College. In addition to giving the address at 11:00 A.M. Sun- day, May 11, in the Rock Bowl Stadium, Msgr. Sampson was the featured speaker during the ROTC commission- ing ceremonies on Saturday, May 10 at 10:00 A.M. in Touhy Aud. on the Loras Campus. Fr. John Naumann was selected by the senior class to be the baccalaureate homilist. Fr. Naumann shared his ideas on how the mem- bers of the class of 1986 can make a difference in others’ lives during the baccalaureate services, May 10, at 7:00 P.M. in the Church of the Nativity on Alta Vista St. in Du- buque. Msgr. Sampson is currently the special assistant at Notre Dame Univ. for ROTC affairs. He has received Ameri- ca’s second-highest military award, the Distinguished Service Cross. Also the recipient of the Distinguished Ser- vice Medal, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Purple Heart and 12 other decorations, he was twice captured by German forces in World War II. Distinguished members of Loras Commencement. Msgr. Sampson receives his Honorary Degree from President DiPasquale. Msgr. Sampson was born in Cherokee, lowa, on Feb, 29, 1912. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1937 and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Des Moines in 1941. He served in civilian parishes until he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Army in 1942. After training he was assigned as the regimental chaplain for the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Air- borne Division. A native of Greene, Fr. John Naumann graduated from the Josephinum High School in Ohio and attended St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained in 1970 at St. Mary Church in Roseville. Between 1970 and 1973 Father Naumann was as- signed to Nativity Parish in Dubuque. During this time he also served as a part-time instructor at Wahlert High School. From 1973 to 1975 he was a full-time member of the staff at Wahlert. In 1975 he was assigned to Loras College and has been on the staff ever since. He is currently finish- ing work on his doctorate at Fordam University. Commencement 25
