It is extremely difficult to write this letter knowing that by the time you read it you may be very far away, pursuing a career of some sort, with Loras College only a dimming memory. Thinking of all the friendly smiles, the kind words, and good times we have shared, and then realizing that after May 11 these may be few and far between is a reality that has not set in yet. But regardless of where you are now, I hope that you can look back on our collective memories of the four years we spent together at Loras College and smile; maybe even laugh. of someone had suggested at Freshman Orientation that such a diverse group of strangers would eventually become as close as Our class has become, | wonder if any of us would have believed it. We have laughed, cried, studied, played and prayed together, and it is our hope that we have learned from these ‘best days of our lives’’ will keep us strong in the years to come. Being the so-called ‘leaders of tomorrow” will at times be even more difficult than Finals Week, and it will be a struggle at these times not to give in to the pressures of the real world. But if we remember to use the knowledge we have gained, to rely on the friends we have made, and to trust in the God we have learned about and met here at Loras, we can and will triumph in all of our endeavors. Yes, we have grown close in many ways, and we the officers are proud to have been able to be a part of that growing-closer. We wiSh you all the best in the future as you leave many of your classmates behind, but also hope that you will not soon forget what we had, and still have, as the Loras College Class of ‘86. Over the years we've watched our class grow from a wonder- ing group of freshmen to a community of junior students, inter- locked with lasting friendships. We've come to better understand ourselves through the classes we attend, the mistakes we've made, and the unforgettable experiences that will forever domi- nate our memories. To bring our class closer together both socially and spiritual- ly has been the goal of all of our dances, happy hours and masses. To be even a small part of this will forever bring back cherished remembrance for me. Our class has shared something special since freshmen ori- entation and now as juniors, we are hopefully aimed in the direc- tion of success and continuing friendships after our class proudly receives its diplomas. From the officers of the junior class, we thank you for your trusting in us to represent you in the Loras Community. °85 The class of 1989 was welcomed to Loras College on August 25, 26, and 27th. To help the 508 freshmen get Started and adjust to their new life, the Student Orientation Staff (SOS) had three busy days of Planned activities. Sunday afternoon was check-in time for all new students. Later that afternoon a mass was held for stu- dents and their parents. Next, stu- dents were whisked away to an ice- cream social and then to meetings in the residence halls. Monday morning came bright and early with lectures and talks on life at Loras and how to survive at college. Tours were also available to get the new students acquainted with the 78 campus. The rest of the day was spent playing softball and that night with a dance at the Field House. Tuesday was the day to learn how to take notes and how to study effec- tively. Mass was held in the Grotto and afterwards students were able to sign up for activities. To get students acquainted with some faculty they were invited to their homes for des- — freshmen were now ready for their up-coming year. GOOD-LUCK! By Dawn Pladsen Meeting new friends 3. Getting together in the fieldhouse 80 Loras Players Tonsia Dorses, played by Lauretta Stribling The season’s first production was The Gin Game, which played September 15-15, Taking the stage as the only two characters in the play were Don and Lauretta Stribling, the co-directors of the Loras Players. This particular production, however, was direct- ed by alumnus John M. Galo, of the class of 1978. The play is about Weller Martin (played by Don Stribling) and Tonsia Dorsey (played by Lauretta Stribling), two residents of a home for the aged who play gin rummy to pass the time, and to avoid the company of the other residents, sit around watching the television all day. The laughs are many as Tonsia, a beginning player, infuriates Weller the longtime player, by beating him at every hand. We also see both humor and sadness as the card players present their eccentric behavior and reveal their dark personal Se- crets. As the second production of the 75th Anniversary season the Loras Players pre- sented the New York Drama Critics Award winning musical, Man of LaMancha. It was presented October 31-November 3 and to many parent’s surprise, this year’s annual Parent’s Weekend performance was held in the newly remodeled St. Joseph's Audi- torium. Throughout the play all of the charac- ters are imprisoned in a dungeon in Seville hear the end of the 16th century. The en- tire action takes place there, and in vari- ous other places in Miguel de Cervantes’ imagination. This year Don Stribling re- Peated the dual role of Miguel de Cer- vantes and Don Quixote that he created On the Loras stage in 1971. Loras Players 81 } EXEZER i mS ROE 82 Loras Players The third Loras Players production was enti- tled Scrooge. It is a musical version of the fa- mous Charles Dickens story called A Christmas Carol. The play is about a greedy miser living in London in the 1890's whose name is Ebenezer Scrooge (played by William C. Renk, class of 1976). He underpays Bob Cratchit, his clerk (Matthew J. Unlike most plays, the entire play’s ac- tion takes place ina single day in the city of Venice. The Servant of Two Masters is also unique in another sense; it is an improvi- sed dialogue. The script outlines the plots but the exact dialogue is left to the actors imaginations, which makes each performance a little different. Commedia dell’Arte also carried the title Comedy Masks. Seven funda- mental characters were developed each with a mask stressing different charac- teristics. In The Servant of Two Masters however, only four of the seven charac- ters are used: Pantalone Dei Bisognosic, a Venetian merchant played by Daniel Topf; Di Lombardi who is played by Steve Kennedy, Truffaldino, the servant played by Marty Hurm, and Brighella, an innkeeper played by Kevin Looby. Loras Players 83 When the curtain went up on the September production of The Gin Game, the Loras Players began a year-long celebration of their 75th anni- versary. The Players, lowa’s oldest amateur theatre troupe, have been at home in St. Joe’s Auditorium at Loras College since 1910, and their infor- mal beginnings can be traced to 1876. The Players’ long and colorful history includes such highlights as the 1938 historical pageant, Hid Battlements, staged for the Archdiocese of Dubuque’s centennial, with a cast of 155 playing 415 roles for a total audi- ence of 21,000. For 29 seasons, the group was directed by the Rev. Karl Schroeder, who brought actor Leo G. Carroll to Loras to play the part he created in Broadway’s Jenny Kissed Me, and engaged Academy Award-winning choreographer Eugene Loring and his Hollywood dancers for Dubuque’s first musical, beginning a collaboration that was to last for years. The last 15 years have been under the direction of Don and Lauretta Stribling, who've brought thousands of local children to Loras for annual matinees of children’s theatre productions. The shows have toured ex- tensively; this year’s musical played for ten soldout performances to 4,000 children at Timber Lake Play House in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Players’ alumni include Don Ameche, most recently seen in Cocoon; James Waring, who directs suburban Washington, D.C.’s Olney Theatre; “Ty-D-Bol Man” and Chips Ahoy “cookie man” Robert Kaliban, who ap- peared on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Try- ing; Emmy Award winner Karen Morrow; John Galo, stage manager of the national tour and Broadway farewell of Yul Brynner’s The King and |; and several others who work for or act in professional theatre. Iowa's oldest amateur theatre troupe will conclude its 75th anniversary celebration with a touring production of the children’s musical, Aladdin and His Magic Lamp. Kevin Reilly is featured as Aladdin, who enters a mystical cave to find the magic lamp of Genie, Sarah Horst. Through the Genie’s power, Aladdin becomes a prince and marries a prin- cess, who is tricked by a comically evil Wazir into swapping the magic lamp for a ‘new lamp.’ But the story ends happily when Aladdin regains the lamp with the help ofhis talking camel, Nufsed, played by Pete Kvidera and Sarah Schaefer. The camel's songs and dances, the Genie’s appearances and disappear- ances, the magic lamp, a touch of love, a little comedy and some audience par- ticipation made Aladdin and His Magic Lamp a delight for all ages. The band won achance to play at the Village Dock in Disney World. Along the way band director Joseph Colaluca and his musicians gave seven performances as they went through lowa, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Illinois. The band performed first at Cardinal Stritch High School in Keokuk, lowa. Keokuk is the home town of Jewel Williamson, the band’s vocalist and alto sax player. The next day, the band performed at DuBourg High School in St. Louis. Next stop was Pacelli High School in Columbus, Ga., where the Rev. Thomas Campbell, a 1956 graduate of Loras, was the band’s host. Following the performance in Georgia, the band traveled to Disney World. The band had time to tour Disney World and the Epcot Center before performing. The concert was the first one performed outdoors for the group. It played on a dock with a riverboat in the background. The next performance was in a huge bandshell in Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg. The conc ert at Cardinal Newman High School was a tune up for a recording session in Nashville. The arrival of the band in Nashville was cheered by the presence of a welcome sign at the motel. The arrival was followed by a welcome from 1980 Loras Stage Band alumnus Bill Berzins. A native of Galena, IIl., Berzins is now an audio-engineer at one of the recording studios in Nashville. He was the one responsible for the band being able to record in Nashville, at the Garage Recording Studio. The recording session marked the closing days of their tour. The mood on the way back to Dubuque was in some ways quiet and reflective and in other ways jovial and relaxed. Four years from now another Loras Stage Band may have a chance to take a trip of this type. In the meantime, the mem- bers of the 1985-86 Loras College Stage Band will have the sat- isfaction of knowing that they have gone to new places and done things that no other Loras Band has done. The bishop was a great uncle six times removed of Odile Loras of Troyes, France, who has spent the Past year as a high school exchange student in Downers Grove, Ill. The younger Loras learned from relatives of her ancestor's achievements in lowa and the recognition that has been accorded him. Bishop Loras came to Iowa in the 1850s and brought Catholicism to the pioneers settling the state. He founded what later became known as Loras College in Dubuque. Campus Ministry 101 ‘Sir Thomas More” Loras College is today as proud of its faculty as it has always been. These are the men and women who teach here and are responsible for the reputation for aca- demic quality that is part of our tradition. The legendary teachers of the past are subject-matter for chapters in the history of the college, and they are the folks of Loras folklore. The Founder Lecture Series, spot- lights seven of our professors speaking on a wide range of interesting and thought- provoking topics. Father Schroeder is a 1930 graduate of Loras College. He studied at the University of Louvain, Belgium, and at Oxford Univer- sity in England. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1938 and a master’s degree in 1942 from Oxford. He has been on the Loras faculty since 1938. Father Schroeder's lecture was on Sir Thomas More, a trained lawyer in London in the late 1400s. More attained high political Office, but died as a traitor for refusing to ac- knowledge Henry VIII's repudiation of papal authority. More's scholarship was renowned throughout Europe and his most famous work, Utopia, describing the ideal state, Placed him among the great political philo- sophers. More led a private life of exemplary devotion and cheerfulness. He was canon- ized a saint in 19355 by the Roman Catholic Church. ‘Death And Burial In Ancient Italy’ Dr. Buller has been on the Loras faculty since 1981, and this summer was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to attend seminars for classicists at the American Academy in Rome and the Vergilian Society in Naples. Dr. Buller’s lecture was a summary of his stay in Italy. It was based on historical facts and findings, and presented in a slide show. Dr. Buller traced the origin of funeral rites and burial practices of the Etruscans and Romans. 102 Founder Lecture Series “A Comet Called Halley”’ Professor Miller has been on the Loras faculty since 1964 and is supervisor of Heit- kamp Memorial Planetarium. In his lecture on Halley’s comet, that most famous of all comets which was last seen in 1910 and appears every 75 years, Professor Miller discussed the history and superstitions of the comets, Halley’s in par- ticular. “The Mississippi Valley And West As Seen From The Comer Of Loras And Alta Vista” Dr. White’s lecture reviewed the evolution of a course from its inception in the curriculum, including changes of the early 1960s, to the present. He emphasized the contributions made by students, colleagues and friends. “Individualism, Freedom And The Human Community’’ Dr. Cruz has been a Loras faculty member since 1977 and is currently the chairman of the Philosophy Depart- ment. Dr. Cruz’s lecture was a reappraisal of the classical no- tions of the current unsettling world politics, and a proposal for an alternative theory of community. “Dennis Mahoney” Professor Hurm has been on the Loras faculty since 1959 and is the chairman of the History Department. . Professor Hurm’s lecture was on Dennis Mahoney, an editor in Dubuque during the Civil War, his imprisonment in Washington D.C., and his defense of his anti-Civil War position. “Chemistry And The Nonscientist: Do They Mix?” Dr. Maslowsky has been a member of Loras’ faculty since 1974. Dr. Maslowsky’s lecture focused on the importance of science to the nonscientist, specifically chemical science. He spoke about the importance of science in everyday life and attempted to demonstrate the relevance and excite- ment that chemistry offers to the nonscientist. Founder Lecture Series 103 Old St. Joe's... The east section of the old St. Joseph's College and the home of the English Department for as long as anyone can remember was razed May 12. Although the west section was refurbished in 1982 and dedicated in the names of Alois and Mabel Hoffmann, the east section could not be restored be- cause of structural problems. A study done twenty years ago revealed that the building should be leveled, but the actual demolition was a long time coming. In fact, George Freund joked at his retirement dinner that the east section had been scheduled for demolition longer than he had been at Loras College. The new classroom building will follow the same architec- tural style as the west section, which houses the auditorium and chapel, and will salvage the original stone pillars of the old entrance for the new entrance at the east end of the cam- Pus. The structure will be five stories high, contain ten class- rooms, fourteen academic Offices, an elevator, anda lounge on the first level. Completion is scheduled for February 1, 1987. 104 Campus Changes . a ‘ane gun te ee oo iY, ngint Campus Changes 105 RIDERS TO THE STARS ... ae Kesseler sewing decorations for the APO Joyce Pfeiler at the controls of the lighting for the APO show. show. One of the reasons Loras was so successful this year was the team spirit. The team was ready mentally as well as physically to beat the opposing teams. Another reason the Duhawks had such a terrific year was the sup- Port given to the team by the 14 seniors, who wanted to end the year in a Spectacular way. Some of the more notable players of the year were Dave Dietz, Chris Browne, Matt Rivera, and Mike Gal- iardo. Dave Dietz (senior) broke all quarterbacking records at Loras. His overall yardage was 6,196 yards with 62 touchdowns. Chris Browne (sopho- more) rushed for a record 164 yards in one game. Matt Rivera (senior) set the team scoring record, and Mike Galiardo (junior) set the single season reception record with 56 catches. As these fine athletes would be quick to point out, however, it was the overall team effort that made their individual achievements possible. Congratulations on such a great season. There was always someone there to pick up the slack.”’ Other high points of the season included a first Place team standing at the Cornell Ram Run to open the season, a second place finish in the college division of the National Catholic College Country Championship, and a second place finish at the lowa Small College Championship, With the entire team returning next year, the Duhawks can look forward to another great season. The talented runner led the Runnin’ Hawks to the NAIA Naitonal Championship race for the fourth year in a row where they finished 22nd in a field of 39 of the nation’s top teams. Tighe raced to a 29th place finish in a field of 355 to lead the Duhawks. “I thought Rich ran exceptionally well,” said first-year coach Bob Tucker. “He showed that he is one of the top runners in the country.” The scoring was completed by sophomore Pat Tierney, 152nd; sophomore Chris O'Donnell, 161st; fresh- man Brian Annis, 240th; and junior Tony Becker, 246th. Other highlights for the Duhawks include first place finisher at the Beloit Invitational, the Wartburg Invitational, and the District-15 Championship. The Duhawks also captured 2nd place at the lowa small college championship and 2nd in the college division of the prestigious National Catholic College Championship at South Bend, Indiana. Individually Tighe snagged 1st place finishes at the lowa Intercollegiate meet and the District-15 Champion- ship. The Duhawks received solid support from Pat Tierney who was named All-District along with Tighe, Chris O’Don- nell, and junior Brian Crane. Other contributors were freshman Brian Annis and juniors Joe Boeh, Harry Graham, and Tony Becker. The Duhawks finished the season ranked 15th nationally. Joe Raible and Bob John- son were co-recipients of the Hustle Award. Kevin Kershisnik was voted Most Valuable Player and Mike Fitz- gerald was voted Most Improved Play- er. The 1985 Loras soccer team, suffering an early season scoring slump, managed only 7 goals in their first nine contests. However, they scored thirteen goals in the next two games, which started a five game winning streak. After finishing the season with a 6-7-2 mark, the Du- hawks entered the NAIA District 15 Championship Toumament with high hopes. Paced by the team’s leading scorer, Branko Jocic, Loras downed Marycrest 5-0 in the opening contest. Unfortunately, a revitalized Grandview squad upset the Duhawks 3-2 in overtime to take the district crown. Coach Winsor summarized the season this way, “The record may look disappointing, but it really isn’t because we are a very young team and most of the players will be retuming next year. Aided by strong performances from Julie Schmit and Cathy Drilling, the Loras women advanced to the championship game against Xavier University of New Orleans. Along the way they secured convincing wins over Kansas Newman (88-50) and Rockhurst (74-51). Schmit’s nine blocked shots, an NCBT single game record, 15 points and 11 rebounds, powered the Lady Duhawks past Quincy College (56-49) to send them into the championship game. Xavier proved to be too much for the Lady Duhawks, however, as their stingy defense held Loras to just 44 points in winning the champion- ship, 61-44. Drilling and Schmit were named NCBT All- Americans. Drilling was also named to the Academic All-American team. The Loras men pushed their way into semifinal action with tough wins over the College of Notre Dame (55-51) and Christian Brothers (61-60). There they met Belmont Abbey, the eventual champion, and fought to a535-55 tie at the end of regulation. In overtime, Belmont Abbey took the lead for good with a pair of free throws with :11 remaining and held on for the win. In the consolation game, Loras battled Cabrini to a 40-40 tie with just over 3:00 remaining before running out of gas. Cabrini then pulled away (55-43) to give the Duhawks fourth place. APO promotes friendship, develops leadership and generally provides service to the cam- pus and the community. 1985-86 proved to be a successful year for APO’s Lambda Kappa Chapter. They kicked the year off with a used book sale in August, and continued to be active throughout the first semester, putting to- gether events like a September blood drive, an October trip to Chicago and ush- ering for the Parents’ Weekend play, Man of LaMancha in November. APO also was a participant in the Homecoming Parade in October. During the second semester, APO again held a used book sale and a blood drive. In January APO sponsored a Muscu- lar Dystrophy Association Bowl-a-thon. March brought with it the annual APO Sneak Preview, a variety show put on by APO members and Loras student volun- teers. Besides providing a weekend of en- tertainment for both participants and au- dience, this activity donates its proceeds to several local and national charities. With a combination of hard work and self- less time giving (not to mention more than alittle fun) APO definitely achieved its goal of helping people in 1985-86.
