gg, Freshmen Orientation -,. .JL The Loras experience. l' , T Kg ' ,r Nl This may be the last good meal we get. DON'T TAKE MY PICTURE. Freshmen orientation offered fun packed activities for everyone. The festivities began Sunday August 26th and didn't end until late Tuesday August 28th. The schedule of events that served to bring the new members of the Loras Community, both on and off-campus freshmen, together was one that included everything from tips on how to survive lectures, to a relaxing riverboat ride on the Mississippi. As the students arrived on Sunday, there was a brunch served in the dining room. Later Sunday afternoon there was a concelebrated Mass in Christ the King Chapel. Sunday evening many Loras freshmen found themselves at the University of Dubuque for the Scott jones perfor- mance. Monday morning the students had a chance to visit with their counselors. In the afternoon the students were found wondering around Dubuque, exploring both on their own and accompanying the tour that was provided by Loras. A shopping trip to Kennedy Mall was also a special attraction for many. There was also an opportunity for students to sign up for participation in intramurals, clubs and various other extra-curricular activities offered at Loras for the active students. As the day progressed it proved to be even busier than anticipated. The afternoon began with the first rounds of the softball tournament. The annual Tri-College picnic at Clarke was followed by a dance at Loras. This brought the second day of orientation to an exhausting end. Tuesday began early with the lectures on Tips on How to Study and Take Good Notes, College Writing Skills and College Math. In the course of the afternoon there was an outdoor barbeque in front of the Loras Fieldhouse which was enjoyed by a hungry lot of kids. As the softball tournament continued into Tuesday afternoon there were thrills and spills and a lot of excitement and fun had by everyone. The winners of the softball tournament were each awarded five-dollars. The winners were - Chris Bodder, leanne Durey, Doug Feldman, Tim Fetzer, Bruce Hallahan, Tony Habel, joan Kedley, Mike Moriarity, Vicki Ross and Don Rowland. Next on the orientation agenda was the relaxing Riverboat Ride on the Mississippi River, which served to prepare everyone for the gala routines of the talent show late Tuesday evening. The three days of orientation gave the students the opportunity to make friends, get to know the faculty and provided time for them to prepare for their first year of college life. l l l l l L F l I

First 1000 Pointer is Honored l l Marty in the 40's. Mickey Marty in 1980. january 19th, 1980 was a personnal homecoming for former Loras basket- ball player and charter member of the 1000 point club, Mickey Marty. Marty, a Dubuque native, was honored during the Loras VS. Briar Cliff game at Five Flags. Dr. Di Pasquale and former President Monsignor Michael Martin were the principle speakers in behalf of Marty. Current Loras coach Bob Mullen made Marty honorary coach of the game, which saw Loras trailing by 12 points, tie the score at the end of regulation time. The Duhawks then pulled ahead to beat ranked Briar Cliff 58-56 in overtime. A dream win for any coach. Also present for the ceremonies were Marty's 9 children and 19 grandchil- dren, his former trainer, teammates and friends. They, along with other Loras fans and teams, gathered toge- ther to honor Mickey Marty-student, athlete, veteran, family man. nil. 'L. P 'q The family join in to honor Dad. Papel Delegate visits Loras On April 24th, Archbishop jean jadot, the Apostolic Delegate to the U.S. was a guest of the Loras Community. Archbishop jadot arrived in Dubuque on April 23, for a three-day visit to the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Archbishop ladot had a full day during his visit to Loras. An informal meeting with faculty and students was held in the Keane Hall Lounge from 10:00 to 11:30 while a concelebrated Mass was held in Christ the King Chapel at 1:30. Father james Barta, delivered the Homily during the concelebrated Mass. Following the Mass a reception was held on the lawn by the Fieldhouse. At 3:30 the convocation began, with Loras President Pasquale Di Pasquale, jr. as the Master of Ceremonies. Father Gary Krapfl delivered the invocation. Fol- lowing the convocation Archbishop jadot discusses church matters with a special panel from the Loras Commun- ity. Father Barta served as moderator of the discussion, with Rosemary Cronin, a lay faculty member: Gerard Noonan, the Loras Registrar: Mary Kuhl, Pre- sident of the Senior Class: Sister Bernadine Curoe, a Visitation Sister and psychologist at the Loras Counsel- ing Center: Tom Kane, Student Senate President: and Father Robert Vogl, Chairman of the Department of Religious Studies. Archbishop jadot is the 9th Apostolic Delegate appointed to the U.S. Ap- pointed in 1973, Archbishop ladot is the official representative of Pope john Paul ll to the Catholics of the United States. During a meeting in Keane Hall the Archbishop ladot enters Christ the Kin , lead by 47545 students get to meet the delegate. Archbishop jadot offers mass, and delivers the words, and Blessings of Pope john Paul Il. S area bishops, for the concelebrated Mass. Papel delegate ladot and Dr. Di Pasquale discuss matters. Bill Lux, of the Board of Regents, speaks at the discussion.
