The celebration began Friday evening with a new attraction - an outdoor pep rally held in the Rock Bowl followed by a bonfire. The Homecom- ing royalty was introduced and the king and queen were crowned. Queen Mary Kuhl and King Brian Henderson were chosen to reign over a court that included Loras students Marikay Cor- nelis, julie O'Brien, Mark Cloghessy, Mike Ehrenstrom, Pete Mordente, Vince Berta, and Norb lanning, and Clarke women Margaret Doyle, Col- leen Ford and Mary Lyons. Kevin Conlon won the first annual Fun Run which preceded the parade Father Warren Nye led through the streets of Dubuque on Saturday morning. After a tailgating party on Keane field, hordes of fans headed for the Rock Bowl to witness a hard-fought football game between the Duhawks and the Lakeland Muskies. Fate was against Loras as the team ended up on the short end of a 28-3 score. Spirits weren't dampened for long, though - students, faculty and alumni dined and danced at Five Flags Civic Center. Entertainment for the dinner was provided by the Baker's Dozen. Things were wrapped up on Sunday with a concert by the United States Marine Band. Homecoming '79 was a great success and left all the par- ticipants looking forward to again being Homeward Bound . Kevin Cameron of the Baker's Dozen performs. ln the course of the 1979-80 school year the Five Flags Civic Center became a part of the Loras Experience. The Five Flags Civic Center was to be the stage for many of the activities. Though owned and operated by the city of Dubuque, Loras has access to the center for basketball games, special events and shows. The center also offers features of its' own to the public in the form of concerts by popular recording artists, ice skating and soon professional hockey competition. l During the first full year of operation the center became the homecourt for the 1980 District 15 basketball cham- pion Loras Duhawks. The center also provided a place to have the homeco- ming get together from the college, honor Loras alum Mickey Marty and provided comfortable and spacious surroundings for the Fred Waring concert. As the center continues to be part of the Loras Experience over the next 10 years, Loras looks to have a long and varied relationship with Five Flags. ll, C ,av -.- 1 X- 1:5 ,..,..1 First 1000 Pointer is Honored l l Marty in the 40's. Mickey Marty in 1980. january 19th, 1980 was a personnal homecoming for former Loras basket- ball player and charter member of the 1000 point club, Mickey Marty. Marty, a Dubuque native, was honored during the Loras VS. Briar Cliff game at Five Flags. Dr. Di Pasquale and former President Monsignor Michael Martin were the principle speakers in behalf of Marty. Current Loras coach Bob Mullen made Marty honorary coach of the game, which saw Loras trailing by 12 points, tie the score at the end of regulation time. The Duhawks then pulled ahead to beat ranked Briar Cliff 58-56 in overtime. A dream win for any coach. Also present for the ceremonies were Marty's 9 children and 19 grandchil- dren, his former trainer, teammates and friends. They, along with other Loras fans and teams, gathered toge- ther to honor Mickey Marty-student, athlete, veteran, family man. nil. 'L. P 'q The family join in to honor Dad. Freshmen orientation offered fun packed activities for everyone. The festivities began Sunday August 26th and didn't end until late Tuesday August 28th. The schedule of events that served to bring the new members of the Loras Community, both on and off-campus freshmen, together was one that included everything from tips on how to survive lectures, to a relaxing riverboat ride on the Mississippi. As the students arrived on Sunday, there was a brunch served in the dining room. Later Sunday afternoon there was a concelebrated Mass in Christ the King Chapel. Sunday evening many Loras freshmen found themselves at the University of Dubuque for the Scott jones perfor- mance. Monday morning the students had a chance to visit with their counselors. In the afternoon the students were found wondering around Dubuque, exploring both on their own and accompanying the tour that was provided by Loras. A shopping trip to Kennedy Mall was also a special attraction for many. There was also an opportunity for students to sign up for participation in intramurals, clubs and various other extra-curricular activities offered at Loras for the active students. As the day progressed it proved to be even busier than anticipated. The afternoon began with the first rounds of the softball tournament. The annual Tri-College picnic at Clarke was followed by a dance at Loras. This brought the second day of orientation to an exhausting end. Tuesday began early with the lectures on Tips on How to Study and Take Good Notes, College Writing Skills and College Math. In the course of the afternoon there was an outdoor barbeque in front of the Loras Fieldhouse which was enjoyed by a hungry lot of kids. As the softball tournament continued into Tuesday afternoon there were thrills and spills and a lot of excitement and fun had by everyone. The winners of the softball tournament were each awarded five-dollars. The winners were - Chris Bodder, leanne Durey, Doug Feldman, Tim Fetzer, Bruce Hallahan, Tony Habel, joan Kedley, Mike Moriarity, Vicki Ross and Don Rowland. Next on the orientation agenda was the relaxing Riverboat Ride on the Mississippi River, which served to prepare everyone for the gala routines of the talent show late Tuesday evening. The three days of orientation gave the students the opportunity to make friends, get to know the faculty and provided time for them to prepare for their first year of college life. l l l l l L F l I Papel Delegate visits Loras On April 24th, Archbishop jean jadot, the Apostolic Delegate to the U.S. was a guest of the Loras Community. Archbishop jadot arrived in Dubuque on April 23, for a three-day visit to the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Archbishop ladot had a full day during his visit to Loras. An informal meeting with faculty and students was held in the Keane Hall Lounge from 10:00 to 11:30 while a concelebrated Mass was held in Christ the King Chapel at 1:30. Father james Barta, delivered the Homily during the concelebrated Mass. Following the Mass a reception was held on the lawn by the Fieldhouse. At 3:30 the convocation began, with Loras President Pasquale Di Pasquale, jr. as the Master of Ceremonies. Father Gary Krapfl delivered the invocation. Fol- lowing the convocation Archbishop jadot discusses church matters with a special panel from the Loras Commun- ity. Father Barta served as moderator of the discussion, with Rosemary Cronin, a lay faculty member: Gerard Noonan, the Loras Registrar: Mary Kuhl, Pre- sident of the Senior Class: Sister Bernadine Curoe, a Visitation Sister and psychologist at the Loras Counsel- ing Center: Tom Kane, Student Senate President: and Father Robert Vogl, Chairman of the Department of Religious Studies. Archbishop jadot is the 9th Apostolic Delegate appointed to the U.S. Ap- pointed in 1973, Archbishop ladot is the official representative of Pope john Paul ll to the Catholics of the United States. Clarke-Loras SingersMeet The Pope The Clarke-Loras Singers began their performing year with an invitation to be one of five choirs to perform in Des Moines during the appearance of Pope john Paul ll at the Living History Farm on October 4. Since the area around the Farm was to be closed off at 6 p.m. on the 3rd, the group spent the night in the homes of various people in the area. The next morning the choir had to be at the farm before 6 a.m. to ensure that they could get past the security guards. All this was worth it, however, as the group was given front line seats for the ensuing Mass celebrated by the Pontif. As part of the Russian Tour, the Choir was not able to sing any of their religious music, so a second concert was prepared. The tour of Poland was enjoyable, with tours of old forts, cathedrals, market- places, and old-style cities on the agenda. The group also visited the concentration camp of Auschwitz. The group was not allowed to sing in Russia, but did manage to protest by singing several religious songs in Moscow and refusing to attend a lecture in Leningrad. The choir finished the tour with an excellent concert in an underground church in Helsinki, Finland. ZITI A common sight during winter in Poland. HI MOM, from Leningrad. Kevin Cameron from Moscow. PO Sneak Preview On February 29th, 1980, Tuohy Auditorium saw the bright lights of Broadway as the 26th annual APO Sneak Preview unfolded. Alpha Phi Omega has sponsored the show for its' yearly run. Under the theme of Broadway , students from Loras and Clarke assembled a show made up of numerous group numbers, solos, dance acts and comedy routines. The 1980 production was produced by Bill Reilly, directed by Dave George. With music directed by Carl Malsack, and comedy directed by Marc Frost. All proceeds from the show are distributed to various Dubuque Chari- ties such as Muscular Dystrophy. A service scholarship for a Loras junior is also a result of these proceeds. s :.,, 1 Where have all the D.l.s gone? A grand total of 53,500 was raised by the 23 couples who danced for 30 hours - from Friday night of March 15 to Saturday March 16. Money was raised by many -means during the course of the 30 hours. Such as swallowing gold fish, walking on hands, and other activities. The theme of this years dance marathon was Dancin So Life Won't Pass Them By. The marathon was organized by Chairman Tom Cherrier and Co-Chairman Peg Brachle. Mark Critelli and Nancy Briggs were awarded a trophy for raising the most money during the marathon. Many thanks were to go out to assorted sources for their aid in the success of the marathon. Dennis Higgins donated the use of his pro-sound system as well as records and some DJ. assistance. D.j.'s from some of the radio stations and discos also joined in the cause. The merchants of Dubuque also did their part by supplying food for the dancers and workers. But mostly the thanks went out to the dancers, pledgers and anyone who in the course of the marathon, donated money to M.S. It was they who were responsible for the real success. Two words which are separated by only the thinnest of lines. Yet during February and March, members of the Loras Faculty met to debate different topics. The forums were started as a result of a survey of the 1979 seniors in which they indicated a desire to see faculty members debate each other on assorted topics of general interest. Senior class president, Mary Kuhl and academic dean, Father james Barta, picked up and developed the idea into the faculty forums. A series of four forums were set up, with a different panel of faculty for each, with a moderator in charge. The questions for the forums were: 1. The Current State of the American Economy: What Role Should the Government Play? 2. American Civilization: Growth or Decline? 3. American Catholicism: Sick or Healthy? 4. The Energy Crisis: Technology or Bureaucracy? The format for each forum started with the moderator introducing the panel and the topic. Each member then had 5 to 10 minutes to present their views, after which they could question each other. Lastly, the audience could question the panel. The debates were open for anyone to attend, and served to help sharpen listening skills and share information with all. It is hoped that now that the forums are established they will continue to be part of the Loras Experience. Paul Heer listens to the debates. Mock Convention '80 On Wednesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 17, the Loras Fieldhouse was the scene of the seventh quadrennial Mock National Convention. Work on the 1980 convention began in early November and culminated in the selection of a presidential and vice- presidential candidate for the Repub- lican Party. For two days, approximate- ly 800 students from Loras and Clarke College, Wahlert and Hempstead High School argued, cheered, bargained, and demonstrated for their favorite presidential hopeful. The tedious matter of formulating a party platform was undertaken as issues were dis- cussed, often heatedly, and positions established. What resulted was a scaled-down version of the Republican National Convention, not unlike the event held in Detroit three months later. The convention began with feelings of great anticipation. Students in cos- tume, representing every state and land possession of the United States enjoyed the festive mood of the first session not knowing what to expect. Initially, most of the delegates were overwhelmed by the rules, regulations, and procedures of the convention. Eventually, patterns of convention business were established and recog- nized by the delegates. The many issues of the platform were hammered out through long, often emotional debate. After hours of fighting, compromising, and voting, a platform was accepted, but not without con- siderable dissension among the delegates. The disagreements left unresolved by the platform ratification resurfaced at the second session during the pre- sidential candidate nominations. After the first roll call vote of the delegates, it was clear that none of the supporters of the front runners, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, or john Anderson were willing to switch their allegiance to another candidate. As the presidential balloting dragged into the third session, tempers wore thin, loyalty began to fade, and concessions were made. On the fifth ballot, a com- promise candidate, former President Gerald Ford, became the Mock Republican Convention's choice for president. After two quick ballots, the :nis- 1 Ulr- ,- vtnef -5 .. r, . v y' v. 5 . E1 Emil' .AK The Loras fieldhouse became Detroit for the 1980 Mock Republican Convention. Sponsored by the Loras Student Senate, the mock convention was the result of a tremendous amount of time, work, and energy from many in- dividuals. Certainly, lohn Brien and Mary jo Carballo, co-chairpersons of the convention, should be singled out for their significant contribution to the success of the two day event. Also, a special word of thanks is expressed to Mr. john Dorweiler, Professor of Political Science, to whom the 1980 convention was dedicated. Under Mr. Dorweiler's initiative and direction, the mock convention has become an educational tradition at Loras, giving students a first hand experience in the political process. tx Dan Crane of Illinois, keynote speaker. Coaches Dave Os- trander, Bill Sheston, and Steve Flynn led their team to a record of 3-7 as the Duhawks sought to regain the winning ways the program enjoyed in the early 1970's. Brian Henderson and Mike Corrigan sparked the Duhawk running attack which was under the leadership of quarterbacks Randy Petsche, john Rolfes, and Dave Schnier. Pat Stauffer and joel Rollinger were switched from QB to wide receiver, and flanker positions, and when teamed with veteran receiver, Stan Nielson, provid- ed the offense with the needed aerial attack. Senior Chip Kurt established himself as the starting center while senior Rick Ross and junior joe Schmall lined up in the guard positions. Paul Rice, a junior, and Rod Schlader, a sophomore manned the tackle spots. Tom Henderson started at tight end while Mark White provided backup help to Henderson at fullback, with jim Hentges playing tight end or flanker. Tony Cusimano at tight end gave the Duhawks needed depth while Mike McGowan and joe Thyne' saw action on the offensive line. Anchoring the defense for the Duhawks were linebackers Dick Cody and Tom Denlinger. Rick Kratz, Mike Sabo and jeff Franklin were the starting defensive ends while john Majerus, Steve Huss, Bill Mullee, Mike Rome, Matt Stuart, Ken McFadden and Forrest Trausch all saw action in the interior defensive line. Mike McDer- mott was the starting nose guard and also handled the punting chores. In the defensive backfield Mike Purviance, john Pritchard and Brian Hornstra saw action close to the ball while Dave Duffy, Kevin Funke, Mike Balliu, Dennis Drish, and Don Zeller were the deep backs. The Duhawks opened their season with three straight road games but came up short 14-9 to Graceland, 13-9 to St. Ambrose and 21-7 to Mt. Senario. They then returned to the friendly confines of the Rock Bowl to play Martin Luther. The Duhawks quickly proved to the home fans that they could be an exciting football team by posting a 19-14 victory over the visitors from New Ulm, Minnesota. Based on the quality of competition and the level of team ability, the Duhawks placed 1-2-3-4 in their tourney com- petition. Strong NAIA challenges came in two tourneys. At Carthage IWIJ they won the tourney over eight opponents including UW-Parkside. The individual champs were Keith Nemec, Vince Berta and jim DeMatteis. At Chicago State they were third behind UW- Whitewater and the host, Chicago State. Here the champs were Mike Ochoa and Ken Beyer. Even stronger NCAA competition came at Wm. Penn IIAI where the Duhawks took second behind NE Missouri State and the champions were Nemec, Beyer and Tom Kettman. The toughest tourney was at Wheaton ULJ where Loras placed fourth of 23 teams. NCAA Division I teams, Drake, Marquette and Notre Dame were the only ones to place of Loras. The Duhawks won matches. These were over ahead seven Maranatha, St. Mary's Upper Iowa, UW-Eau Claire, Millikin, Grinnell and St. Ambrose. There were six losses. In the NAIA finals, where Beyer placed third at 'I67 and Berta, a mythical tenth out of 37 wrestlers, Loras placed a respectable 22nd out of 80 teams. Kettman won the first match of the tourney by a pin and found himself on the front page of the Hays IKSJ journal. Individualized highlights were many. Kansas City Here We Come The 1980 edition of the Loras College Duhawks will go down as one of the best Loras basketball teams ever. They finished the year with a 23-11 mark as well as a trip to the NAIA National finals in Kansas City. Other highlights to the season would have to be the overtime win against Briar Cliff on Micky Marty Day at Five Flags Civic Center and a big win against University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Playing a rough schedule with many NCAA Division I and II teams on it, the Duhawks went over the 23 mark for the third straight year, a feat never before done at Loras College. During his six years at Loras, Coach Bob Mullen has now won 110 games and has taken Duhawk teams to trips in Georgia, Florida, California, and the National Tournament in Kansas City. He also received an honor this year in that he will represent the United States in lectures in some of the Scandinavian countries in the summer of 1980. Under Coach Mullens' directions, the senior Duhawks of 1980 were winners of 85 games during their four years at Loras, averaging 21 wins and 11 losses per year. Along with Coach Mullen achieving his 100th coaching victory, a special thanks goes to Assistant Coach Doug Smith, who has been his right arm over the last four years 'and without whom many of these victories would not have been possible. This year's seniors who achieved personal honors over their careers were, jeff Carter, who missed the 1000 Point Club by finishing with 992 points in only 2 V2 seasons at Loras. jeff was all-tournament in every tournament Loras played in, as well as All-District NAIA. Terry Callahan was also all- tournament at the Dan Danovan and will be remembered for his last second shot against Hawaii-Hilo in the National Tournament. Kurt Denner was also all-District NAIA and joined-the 1000 Point Club as a junior. Curtis Evans achieved All-American Honorable Mention as a junior mainly because of his play in the NAIA Tournament. Bill May was a strong asset to the success of the team and improved every time he walked on the floor. The Duhawk basketball team has been striving toersget to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City and this year they made it. March 9, 1980 marked the first time since 1947 that a Loras basketball team competed in the National Tournament. In recent years they have been trying to get back to play for the National title and four times in the past ten years they have advanced to the finals of the District 15 playoffs. In both '78 and '79, Coach Mullen and the Duhawks have advanced to District finals only to eventually lose on both occasions to Briar Cliff College. But this year things were different. As a result of season records the NAIA playoff system gave Briar Cliff and Northwestern a bye in the first round. Loras played and beat Westmar while Grandview toppled Graceland to set up games that featured Loras against Northwestern and Briar Cliff against Grandview. The Duhawks posted an 84-70 victory over Northwestern at Northwestern while Grandview beat Briar Cliff at Briar Cliff, 91-88. This moved the two winners to the NAIA District 15 Championship Game at Five Flags Civic Center in Dubuque. The Duhawks started out slow in the champion- ship game but overcame the first half doldrums to post a runaway 93-70 victory. As a result of this, on March 9th the Duhawks headed for Kansas City. The 43rd Annual NAIA Basketball Tournament was just as colorful as the 42 that had gone before it. Teams from the 32 districts of the United States gathered to see who would be the best after the six days of basketball action in Kemper arena in Kansas City. Once they arrived at Kansas City, coaches, players, and the travelling party found out that there was a full round of activities planned for every day and night for the teams that were in the National Tournament. The Honorary Coach program provides each team in the tournament with two representatives from a Kansas City business to accompany the teams everywhere they go. These men planned activities for the teams and were assigned to act as hosts while the teams were in the tournament. Bob Raine and lim Washburn of a Kansas City life insurance company were assigned to the Duhawks and, in the opinion of the Loras team, were two of the best Honorary Coaches in the history of the tournament. They made sure that the players and coaches had an opportunity to see the Arrowhead Stadium Complex where both the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals play, as well as taking the team to many other points of interest in the city. They also gave every member of the team a departing gift in remembrance of their trip to Kansas City. The feeling of the Duhawk travelling party was that, in addition to the thrill and excitement of participating in a National Tournament, they met some of the most gracious people in the world in the players and Booster Club from Hawaii- Hilo. Because the game was televised live to the Hawaiian Islands, the Duhawks feel that they already know or are known by a number of people in Hawaii. In the first round of the National Tournament in Kansas City, Loras defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 72-70, on a last-second shot at the buzzer by guard Terry Callahan. The Duhawk fans screamed onto the floor in absolute bedlam as if they had won the National Championship. It will always be one of Loras' proudest moments. The next night Loras was down 17 points at half time to Clarion State in Pennsylvania. The Duhawks fought back to go ahead by one point with a minute left but failed in a couple of crucial free-throws in a 79-73 loss. The Loras College basketball team, rather than being discouraged, was very proud of their achievements in the past season, not only reaching the championships in Kansas City, but also getting down to the final ten NAIA teams in the nation. A couple of Duhawks received personal honors as guard Curtis Evans was named an honorable mention All-American because of his fine play in the tournament, coming back from a painful injury that limited him to only a half year's play. Iunior center Kurt Denner was also named to the jones Cup Team, an honor received by only five NAIA All-Stars. Kurt will be a member of the team representing the United States in Yugos- lavia in October of 1980. There were five seniors on the Duhawk Gina Cronin cheers on the Duhawks at Kemper. tournament team: Terry Callahan, jeff Carter, Bill May, Bill Finn and Neil Treanor. Many of them hold individual records at Loras and as a group, they have won more games than any other basketball seniors in the history of Loras College. When they were freshmen, the Duhawks were 14-15, as sophomores they were 24-8, as juniors 24-12, and this year the season's record for the NAIA District 15 Champions was i 23-11. Managers Doug Wareham and Paul Breitbach, as well as trainer Tom Fiore were also an important part of the team's success. In the past, when Loras went to the National Tournament, they made back-to-back appear- ances: 1939 and '40, 1946 and '47, and now hopefully 1980 and '81. Assistant Coach Danise Curry's know-how and enthusiasm were also contributing factors to the team's success. The Loras women burst from the starting gate by winning six of their first seven games, and kept up the momemtum to end their season as Dubuque's unofficial city champions, following victories over UD and Clarke. Individual notables include Becky Horsfield, a junior transfer from Clarke, who was a great outside shooter throughout the year. Mary Beth Cleary and Denise Baggio played a hard, pressure defense that produced many turnovers. Lianne Thome, Teresa McClain and jayne Soppe like to crash the boards, each leading the team in scoring at various times throughout the season. Marianne Keating held the season record for the most steals, playing with an intensity that won for her the 1980 Hustler Award . Though she was out much of the season following a knee injury, Vicki Ross demonstrated her ability early on and continued to support team spirit all through the season. Lori Murray, a freshman, set a school scoring record when she netted 32 points in the 56-53 victory over the University of Dubuque in the Loras Fieldhouse. Murray also, played tough defense all over the court, and was voted Most Valuable Player by her teammates for the 1979-80 season. With ever-increasing fan support, the Duhawks look forward to an even more successful 1980-81 season. T ' 5 lumpshot, as Bev Witt puts it up. 4th State Title Evades Netters HEAD COACH: ASST. M lim Farrell joe Hughes Dan Kennedy Brian Long Tom Meaney Brian Smith During their careers at Loras Mike The 1979 Loras College baseball season was highlighted by numerous team and individual honors. Coach Doug Smith, in his third season Q63-30-23 as head coach, was named N.A.I.A. District 15 Coach of the Year. He led his team to an all-time Loras College record of 28-13-1 and a post season District 15 play-off berth. Five Duhawks were selected first team all-N.A.l.A. District 15 and four others won honorable mention. First team selections were Mike Delaney, Terry Callahan, jim DelMastro, lim Boffeli, Frank Dardis. Honorable Mention selections went to Steve Burke, Craig Rima, Neil Rima, and Cory Soukup. Freshmen who contributed greatly and won letters this season were pitchers Duane Coleman, john Drilling and Scott Davis and infielders Dan Ken- nedy, Brian Smith, jim Brew, and joe Hughes. Outfielders winning letters included jim Farrell and Gerry Bren- nan. There were numerous highlights dur- ing the 1979 season, but the come- from-behind 8-7 victory over the Big Ten's University of Iowa in a game played in Iowa City on April 23 stands at the top of the list and possibly at the top of the all-time list of great Loras accomplishments in athletics. Another big win for the Duhawk baseballers was the April 26 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the University of Northern Iowa. The Duhawk's lone tie came at Cedar Falls against U.N.I. in a game called in extra innings. The Duhawks had scored two runs and had the bases loaded when the game was called and the score reverted back to a 2-2 9th inning tie. However, weather did not prevent the Duhawks from sweeping doubleheaders from Wart- burg, Simpson, Cornell, William Penn, Iowa Wesleyan, Graceland, Mt. Mercy and Marycrest. Besides Iowa and Northern Iowa the Duhawks split with Grand View, St. Ambrose, and the University of Dubuque, The District 15 play-offs held in Carroll, Iowa saw the Loras College ball team win the opener of the four-team double elimination by a score of 7-0. The win came over the eventual district champions Briar Cliff. The Duhawks then lost the next two games to St. Ambrose by a 6-3 score and to Briar Cliff 4-2 to end the 1979 season with 28 wins - 13 losses and 1 tie. , - - A --A . -u., :pr- ,- , ,k F,-. -f. 4.7 -,v-. The Duhawks, led by Coach Marcy Packer and Assistant Coaches julie Wester- camp and Tammy Edens, practiced with the Orlando Rebels, members of the Amateur Softball Association. Upon returning to Dubuque, the young Loras team faced a tough season of play. Senior Brenda Wilcke at shortstop was the sole upperclassman, and led the team of up and coming freshmen and sophomores through a season which included the First Annual Duhawk Invitational. Sophomores included Marianne Keat- ing, Cathy Kass, Teresa McClain, Georgia Capell, Joyce Geary, and Jayne Soppe, who was sidelined by a knee injury mid-way through the season. The new blood of the team featured Joyce Bonifas at first base, Denise Baggio at second, Nancy Haack, Sue Capell and Carol Voellinger in the outfield, Julie Hoffman behind the plate and Colleen Ryan on the mound. Jean Renner worked at both second and the pitcher spots, with Jayne Osterhaus aiding at catcher. Teresa Hyland and Tammy Edens worked as manager and trainer. The 1980 Most Valuable Player Award went to Brenda Wilcke. Colleen Ryan received the Hustler Award, the Team Award went to Joyce Geary, Nancy Haack was named Most Improved Player, and Joyce Bonifas won the Coaches Award for Leadership. Season Results Marycrest Upper Iowa ..................Coe ........Platteville Upper Iowa of D HEAD COACH: The Duhawk tennis team in 1980 surged to a 3-4 record. Their goal is to return to the traditionally competitive program Loras tennis has enjoyed for many years. This year an old face returned to the scene as Ron Mescall took the reins to give emphasis to the program. Mescall, a Big Ten Champion at No. 5 Singles at Michigan State, led the former netters of 1969-70 to one of their winningest years as they took the Midlands Conference. Even though the present tennis courts were to soon give way to the new athletic complex, Coach Mescall was determined to inject qualities of past programs, the court has seen, into his current program. Qualities of Msgr. Gannon, who was the Mr, Tennis of Loras, the enthusiasm and hard work of Tom Sannito, as well as his own drive. In 1980 some new faces entered on the netmans scene as lim Breitbach, john Talbot, Dave Toth, Mark Streit, Keith Gudenkauf, Kathy Schreiber, Bob Plahm and Dave Donovan made their serve. The 1980 Duhawks were a very young team, as Talbot and Toth were freshmen, while the rest were so- phomores. Injuries and bad weather caused the Hawks to miss out on three dual matches, the Rockford Tour- nament and the District Tournament. The team finished the season with a record of 3-4. Coach Mescall is confident that with hard work and more experience, the 1981 Duhawks can be one of the strongest teams on the court. 1979-80 turned out to be one of the most successful years the Loras swim team has ever had. Under the guidance of Head Coach jan Leiser, the swim mers overturned meet after meet and rewrote the school record books as twelve school records fell. 1. The season marked the first time in Loras' history that the harriers have gone undefeated and untied. IThe 1972 team finished at 8-0-11. Led by co-captain's Thomas Boeh and Tim Durham, the DuHawks all but ran their competitors into the ground. Attaining the undefeated mark was not an easy task as Loras faced the perennially powerful Augustana as well as the awesome challenges of both Whitewater and Wartburg. The team also made their mark at the Chicago Lakefront Invitational, won by the University of Northern Iowa, and at the Notre Dame Invitational, swept by Auburn, as they finished ninth and eleventh respectively. Coach Wittine built his nucleus around proven veterans Boeh, Durham, Tom Manning, Larry Hellman, Chris Iron- side, Dan Loes and jeff Gardner. Thomas Boeh, the DuHawks top man for the season, turned in a best of 25:11 at the Chicago Lakefront Invitational. Loras' second and third men for the year, Tim Durham and Tom Manning, posted personal records of 25:34 and 25:39 respectively at the Notre Dame Invitational. Larry Hellman flew in 26:13 also at Notre Dame. First year runners Larry Hood, Chris Hoft, Dennis Schlader and jerry jo- chum tenaciously helped the Runnin' DuHawks attain their ultimate glory. At Notre Dame, Hood and Hoft both ran p.r.'s of 26:20 and 26:59 respective- ly. In NAIA District 'I5 competition at Graceland, Loras finished 2nd behind Northwestern. Dordt, Graceland and Westmar followed the two patesetters. The DuHawks placed 4 runners in the top 10, but had a weak finish by their fifth man. Because of the new rule that only the top team and top 5 individuals qualify for the National meet, Loras' season ended abruptly. One should acknowledge the dedica- tion and sacrifice a cross country runner must acquire as he pushes himself to the limit of his capabilities. It is not uncommon for a distance runner to log 85-110 miles a week as w I I I I I A' HEAD COACH, Al Wittine ASST. The extension of Loras' athletic program became possible through the efforts of Coach Dave Smith and six pioneer runners: Liz C-abbard, Michelle Mueller, Sally O'Neill, Vicki Ross, Linda Schlueter and Wendy Sauter. The Loras women ran in five invitationals against such teams as Luther College, Cornell College and UW-Lacrosse, in races of from 2 to 3.1 miles. Though the Duhawks did not place high among their competition, their perserverance and hard work built a strong base for the 1980 season. This was a building year, as there was only one sophomore and one senior competing, while there were four freshmen, among them Schlueter and Ross, the co-captains. Loras' top woman runner was Linda Schlueter. Other strong runners were Vicki Ross and Sally O'Neill. Linda Schlueter, and Vicki Ross were picked as the first co-captains of the first year team. Women's Track ,. E - - . nr- ? Q Ig ,xr T-ij' Top to Bottom, Diane Sahm, Norma Leber, Vicki Ross, Rose Noesges, Sue Fox, Linda Schleuter, COACH Barb Anderson The first edition of the Loras Women's Track Team began training in late February not letting the cold winter weather or the knee high snow drifts stop them. The team showed enthusiasm and determination during practices knowing that their hard training would pay off during the indoor meets and the warm weathered outdoor meets to come. With only five women competing, a team score was not possible, due to ailment Diane Sahm was unable to compete, but the women still met the challenge, gaining individual goals. ln individuals events, Sue Fox and Norma Leber competed in the open 400 meter. Linda Schluester ran the two mile. Rose Noesges undertook the 60 and 200 meter hurtles and Vicki Ross threw discus and shot put. The women also had two relay and one medley relay team. Sue Fox, Norma Leber, Rose Noesges, and Vicki Ross ran 100 meters each in the 400 meter relay and 200 meters each in the 800 meter relay. Sue Fox f220y, Norma Leber 14405, Rose Noesges 11001, and Vicki Ross 41005 also composed the 800 meter medley relay team. The women found they had met their goals when the state meet arrived. Winning medals for their 400 meter relay and their 800 meter relay effects were Sue Fox, Norma Leber, Rose Noesges and Vicki Ross. Rose Noesges also won a medal for her 200 meter hurtles. The only regret felt by this year's women's track team is that the team was so small, still the women did have a very successful and rewarding year, and they hope that the proceeding years will accumulate larger and even more successful teams. Schedule March 1st Iowa City 8th Grinnell 15th Waverly 22nd Coe April 16th Central 19th Luther May 2nd and 3rd State - Central Track and Field Before the start of the season Head Coach Dave Ostrander and Assistant Coach Dave Smith had one goal in mind for the 1980 season of the Loras College Track and Field Team. That goal was to begin to rebuild the reputation of Track and Field excellence here at Loras that was so prevalent up until the early seventies. This was to be achieved through the season by both individual and team efforts. After reviewing the results one can say that Ostrander and Smith did an outstanding job. From a team standpoint the Duhawks proved early in the season they were people who would have to be reckoned with as they placed third in the Central Invitational at Pella. Two weeks later the Hawks served notice again at the Norseman Invitational in Decorah. In addition to several solid individual performances, the Distance Medley Relay Team of Tim Durham, jim Watkins, Tom Manning and Tom Boeh literally destroyed the competition of one ofthe areas most prestigous meets by better than 50 years. Other good team efforts included the University of WisconsinfStevens point Invitational, Universi- ty of WisconsinfWhitewater and most notably the Grinell Invitational where Loras took home the second place trophy to close a productive season. Individually the Duhawks had several consistent performances that did a good portion of the scoring throughout the season. Mike McDermott was the mainstay of the weightmen where he compiled enough points to be among the Loras leaders. Chris Christian was a consistent point getter in the Triple jump junior Sprinters. jim Watkins and john Moore proved to be the top men at their job and when combined with Tim Durham and Chris Ironside the foursome formed a mile relay team which did it's share of glory grabbing including a come from behind Q60 yardsj victory at the Grinnell Invitational. Durham was also one of the finest middle distance runners Loras has produced in recent years. joining Durham at the 800!1500 level was Sophomore Tom Manning who proved to be one of the top milers in the state after several fine performances. Tom Boeh held down the distance corps with victories in the steeple chase and 5000 meters throughout the year. While Greg Smith virtually won every competition he was in. His specialty the Long lump was an outstanding achievement. Greg also captured the MVP trophy at the Grinnell Invitational for his winning efforts in the long and triple jumps. In late May, Boeh and Smith were joined by senior Dan Loes in Abilene, Texas for the NAIA National Track and Field Championships. The two represented Loras men by placing tenth in the nation in the 5000 meters and Long lump respectively while Loes was forced to drop out of the marathon at 21 miles due to injury. All in all it seems the team achieved their goals for the year and were proud to say Loras Track is Back. The fall season squad, led by back captain jim Quigley and pack captain Marty Kearney, dropped games to Turkey River, Quad City Rednecks, and Milwaukee Rugby. Duhawk Ruggers defeated Upper Iowa Rugby 12-0 and had a season-ending victory in the Quad City Tournament. Loras dropped a close decision on Day 111 to Milwaukee Rugby, but on Day 1152, the Duhawks came back with a most impressive victory over Amoco Rugby of Naperville, Illinois. The Loras squad was led by all-star play from backs lim Quigley, john Murphy and Dennis Clegg. Amoco suffered from brutal attacks by all-star scrum members Brian McPartlin, Tim johnson, Marty Kearney, lerry Johnson, Frank Kudlacz, Art Chiapetta, Tom Stein, and Dan Murphy. The Lorassquad walked away with a 16-12 victory in the final game of the fall season. The spring season saw only one defeat and this due only to a forfeit. Cornell College was overwhelmed with returning Loras ruggers from the fall season, and new additions for spring ball in the form of Rob Santucci, Dan Halpin, Tim Flannery and Mark Raymond. The spring season ended with a devastating attack upon Beaver Creek in the All-Iowa Tournament. Loras Ruggers laughed in a 33-0 sweep. Though the Loras College Rugby Club had weak school and fan support, there were some rugger-huggers and rugger fans to cheer the team on and to take part in post-game ceremonies. dee Gigwfia Tim Farrell Tim johnson Dennis Clegg Rob Santucci Marty Kearney jim Quigley Perry Dazzo Frank Kudlacz Dan Halpin Charlie Downs john Murphy Brian McPartlin Pete Langekamp Rick Erchanold Tom Denlinger Ken Fonte Dave Schneer Tony Cusimano Tom Stein Art Chiappetta Tim Flannery Mark Raymond Dick Cody Loras Soccer Club SEATED, Mark Hannon KNEELING: Pat O'Malley, Brett Knowlton, Francisco Ponce de Leon, jeff justice, Brian Henderson, STANDING: Dale Sgarbossa, lim Farmer, Chip Kurt, Roger Malatt, Bill Solawetz, David Amusu, Everet Plante, NOT PICTURED: Barb Kupka, john Kranz, Al Kozak, Terry Strain was Barb Kupka moves the ball against the U. of D. Pictured below is why.-' Tom Boeh, a senior from Lombard, Illinois, has won the coveted Mark Weber Award which is given each year to the Most Outstanding Student- Athlete on the Loras College track team. A six-time National qualifier in both cross country and track, Boeh has been a five-time All-District selection. Besides his role as the captain of the 1979 Loras Cross Country team, he was also the number one man on the team this year, an honor he earned first in 1977 and shared with Dave Smith in 1978. As a two-time indoor District Cham- pion in both the mile and the two mile, Tom set meet records in the 5000 meters in both the Central and Grinnell lnvitationals. He is the current school record holder in the 3000 meter steeplechase, at 9:28. To earn this honor, Tom had to beat the old record of Don Merrick, a previous Mark Weber Award Winner and a former Loras coach. The Mark E. Weber Award is given each year by Mr. and Mrs. William Weber of Anamosa, Iowa, in honor of their son Mark, a former captain of the Loras track team who still holds the school record in both the shot put and the discus. During his undergraduate years at Loras, Mark established himself as both an outstanding student and an out- standing athlete. His leadership quali- ties were recognized both in the classroom and on the track. Following his death in a tragic auto accident in the fall of 1965, his parents established this award in memory of their son who had graduated in May of 1965. Kevin Koch Robert Murphy Terry Schueller Robert Oswald The Lorian is a student paper in every sense. The editors are all Loras students, the staff are all from Loras, and the paper is funded from the general fee the students pay each year. Consequently the Lorian staff feels its primary respon- sibility is to the students to which it serves. The paper aims to be a vehiclt of communication between the varying segments of the Loras community and tc keep the students informed of events taking place at Loras. The Lorian published stories which were of importance to students and faculty Included in such articles as Loras winning an age discrimination suit at the Iowa Supreme Court, the lobbying by private colleges to gain passage of the tuition differential grant in the Iowa legislatureg and unfortunately, the deaths of four members of the Loras community. The Lorian published issuely updates regarding the progress of the Republican Mock Convention and during the convention itself accurately portrayed the role of the press. Throughout the convention, the Lorian was responsible for starting some rumors and spreading others, however, the delegates were well-informed by the special editions the Lorian published. Through the editorials of Kevin Koch and Robert Murphy, the Lorian covertly expressed opinions regarding life at Loras. ln the issuely column by Mike Reinert, opinions were presented to which everyone recognized the mean- ing. With most of the staff returning next year, including the entire editorial board, the 1980-81 Lorian possesses the poten- tial to be the best newspaper Loras students have funded. Afterall, it is the students the Lorian serves. 119 Loras ','. ., -Ni Wm' g if ,V 1 Si Y .L AA I Yi: TAMMY EDENS - junior, Davenport la MATT STUART - Senior, Dubuque Ia JOHN BAKER - Senior, Chicago Ill. But it does get completed, and into student hands. This was a year of turn over until the right combination of people came together. This book finally saw the light of day thanks to the help of many people, and now that it is complete I would like to thank my help. First I would like to thank Kathy Ragunas who stuck around to keep working on layouts and completed many of them at home over the summer. Mary Dunlevy who worked hard to help gather material, do layouts and suggest changes in the book. To Liz Gallagher who helped me set up the groups for pictures. fMost of which we got, some we didn't.j To Leo Delaney for help he gave on the plays and groups. To Colleen Ryan who gave up a large part of her summer to lend a hand on layouts, writing, typing, ID etc. To Laura O'brien, who wrote and rewrote articles, then typed them up for use. To Tammy Edens who came in to do work others wouldn't. And to the coaches, especially jan Leiser who put up with me on articles and lD's of sports material. The list goes on and on. Thanks to you all, those I have and haven't men- tioned. And thanks to the student body for being patient for the Loras Experience Purgold 80. my W1 ADMINISTRATIO PASQUALE DI PASQUALE, IR. - President REV.
