ELMER LAYDEN RETURNS FOR HOMECOMING sv' 's l HORSEMEN-Miller, Layden, Crowley and Stuhldreher Outlined against a blue gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. A Different Sort of Homecoming I knew very little of Elmer Layden prior to his short appearance at our pep-rally on Friday night, October Z-the night before our first homecoming game in 11 years against Marquette. Seated with the rest of the football players, I could never describe the feelings of pride and antici- pation within me as the cheerleaders yelled, the people screamed, and the band blared. And then, with short, steady strides, that remarkable, gray-haired in- dividual approached the stage. He casu- ally stepped up to the microphone and related with ease and humor many stories filled with the ageless traditions of Notre Dame football. And later as I walked back to the dorm, I knew that somehow tomorrow's game would mean a little more. Mean more because one man wanted to share the richness of his past with the newness of our own homecom- ing tradition.
