With the camera and the pen we have tried, in a sense, to capture the youthful personalities and activities of a student body. In September we returned to a dormant school and soon had it humming as sophomores became accustomed to their new surroundings, juniors renewed old friendships, and seniors be- gan the homestretch in the classroom toward graduation. Fall included plenty of time on the field and at play: foot- ball, basketball, Oklahomal, dances, and dates. Senior-A activities went into full swing following Christmas vacation which terminated with the prom, exams, and graduation. The spring was highlighted by the D. A. play, track, spring concerts, another prom and end-of-the-year banquets. As finals approached, seniors and Underclassmen alike, realized the importance of study and the responsibilities they, as the leaders of tomorrow, must learn to face today. Underclassmen concluded another unforgettable year at Lorain High School and went happily on their way to summer vacations. With responsibility seniors faced an ending and a beginning-an ending of three unforgettable years, a beginning of challeng- ing adult status. QW E-ditor Table of F lty ................... Weintraub Assistant Principal Students, Fifty-five years of Scimitars reflect the high school days of Lorain students. This annual will mean much to you as years go by. The scattered segments of your school days depicted within these pages serve as reminders of eventful days. This Scimitar is a treasury of memories. May it bring back some happy times which you cherished during your growth here. Continue to grow intellectually and spiritually. 8.13. ILM? Principal To the student body, This school year will long be remembered. Not only was '57-'58 in the Geophysical Year, but the Russians really stunned Americans with the surprise launching of their satellites. Most good citizens will want to accept their responsibility as citizens. Too often we think of our privileges and rights and forget the duties that go along with our heritage. Perhaps, from this year on, young people as well as adults, will take school work more seriously. Perhaps, students will strive to excel, to get good grades in school, to learn. We must accept that it will take knowledge as well as material things to compete with the Russians, or we will lose our American way of life. The staff of Lorain High School ioin me in my hope and belief that the pupils of this school will accept their duty and rise to the challenge. Since our first l..l-l.S. commencement in l879, many of our graduates, by their accomplish- ments, have brought honor to Lorain. This Scimitar contains the pictures of many stu- dents who will some day join this select group. Sincerely yours, CQ, Mr. Jones Dean of Boys Although famous for his witty re- marks, Mr. Jones is a prince in the serious man-to-man category, as many a boy will testify. Mr. Cinniger, lull time attendance otticer, enforces the State of Ohio's school attendance policy. Mr. Cinniger Attendance Officer Deans Mrs. Mehlow Dean of Girls Dealing in personalities and prob- lems, Mrs. Mehlow lends her crutch to any girl limping through a crisis. The 1957 edition of the All-Buckeye Conference Team included seven Steelmen. Junior center Dan Sadowski, who landed a berth on the United Press All-Ohio first team, was Lorain's lone representative on the first team offensive squad. The defensive unit, however, found three Lorainites in its midst. Jerry Wagner, 330 pound tackle, was selected at that position on the basis of his stellar line play, while Dennis Chrobak, who performed brilliantly at end, was given the nod at a flanker position. Al Polansky was named to a linebacker spot. Captain Frank Kosco bolstered the Steel City contingent by holding down a defensive end position on the second team. Speedy Ken Deshuk, school record holder in the high and low hurdles, was chosen as the safety on the second defensive unit. Rounding out the squad is iunior, Roger Farr, who bore the brunt of the Steelmen attack, and was a second team halfback selection. ff, it xx Q X NX X X Frank Kosco Ken Deshuk Roger Farr 88 Q E 4 .nk S g f -- -4s:...,-'gk ,naw .A jflw. The season began with four straight victories, but four setbacks in succes- sion put a damper on the hopes of the Lorain fans. However, the team rallied and ended the year with a commendable lO-6 record. The graduation of Captain Bill Fazekas lwho set a new single game scoring mark of 39 pointsl, Frank Kosco, and Chuck Niemeth left the team shorthanded at mid-year but the Steelmen cagers made an impressive showing, including an upset victory over Marion. With a nucleus of only four returning lettermen, Coach Tony Misko molded a team that will be long remembered in the annals of Lorain High sports history. The Steelmen dropped a heart- breaking opener to Elyria but rallied as they hit the tourney trail by dumping St. Edwards. Paced by the potent bats of Dick Kala and Bucky Urbanic, revenge was gained in a con- test with traditional rival, Elyria. Gaining mo- mentum, the Steelmen toppled Rocky River to gain a berth in the district tournament. Fire- balling Bill Fazekas hurled the squad into the Columbus select four by setting dawn Akron Garfield and Euclid in hard fought games. With Fazekas again receiving the call to the mound in the semi-finals, the Lorainites disposed of Columbus St. Charles in an extra-inning fracas. However, on the next afternoon disaster struck in the form of Reading and the Miskomen came out on the short end of a 9-0 score. Promising Sophomores Although untested, the Sophomores pictured at the right may prove to be important cogs in the thinclad machinery, Much of a would-be successful season will depend upon their perform- ance. Last season the amiable twosome formed what most authorities agree to be, perhaps, the greatest array of cindermen to don the L.H.S. colors. Although many of the stalwarts of that squad have passed on via the graduation route, the brain- trust is optimistic concerning the pending campaign. Many have cited the trouncing of Fremont as the high spot of the season, however, the upset victory over Lakewood receives the nod from this corner. The Steelmen, also, reigned unbeaten in two encounters with neigh- boring Elyria. Returning Lettermen Erdy, high lump, Ken Deshuk, hurdles. Scenes from Oklahoma The hard work, the long hours, the tedious rehearsals were well worth it, for the i957 production Oklahoma will long live in the minds of the people who saw it as an excellent performance. The cast, above lett, is shown studying the Rogers and Hammerstein works and lyrics. One ot the popular song hits of the production was The Surry With The Fringe On Top. Here fabove rightj are Andrew Carnes and two ot the townfolk. The romantic leads in Oklahoma were shared by Pat Sposato fleftl who played Laurie and Bill Eastin Crightj who played Curly. The ups and downs suftered by our hero and heroine is neatly solved in the end by the timely death ot the villian Jud Fry. Two high spots of the show were the square dance routines and Laurie and the girls' chorus singing Many a New Day.
