This organization plays an important role in our educational system because it not only recognizes those with outstanding scholarship ability but also emphasizes those well rounded in the four requisites for membership: Scholarship, Service, leadership and Character. Membership into this society is limited to students in the upper third of their graduation class scholastically who excel as well in the other three requirements. The entire number chosen'from any class cannot exceed 'fiften per cent of that class enrollment. Twice a year before graduation new members are inducted into this society at a ceremony held for parents and friends. A few Senior B's are always included so that they may carry on after the Senior A's graduate. The play, which was first produced in Lon- don in 1949, offered an excellent opportunity for charac- terization. The setting of the ploy is in England. The ploy centers around a young artist who's accused of the murder of her brother. On her way to the death house a sudden rainstorm forces her and her guards to take shelter in ci convent on high ground. A sister in the convent becomes interested in the accused murderess and sets about to prove her innocence. Miss Clarice Miraldi was the producer-director of the play. She was assisted by Donna Powers and Mary Ann Vegh as student directors. A Cappella Choir The Lorain High School A Cappella choir, under the capable direction of Mr. Howard Hansen, consists of approximately one-hundred enthusiastic members. The numerous and varied activities of the choir kept their calendar filled. To start the season in good style the choir held a Back-to-School dance in September, fol- lowed by the presentation of the annual operetta which this year was the Mikado , various Christmas concerts, spring concerts and the East liverpool choir concert at which time the Lorain choir played host to them for an evening of entertainment. The highlight of the year was a spring concert tour which carried the choir's fame to southern Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The annual choir banquet and induction ser- vice held May 28, and the strains of The Lord Bless You and Keep You at graduation on June third cli- maxed the season, and with a tear recalled the many fond memories that will always remain with the 61 graduating members. Lorain High School Band From the band season to concert time the L.H.S. 76-piece band has proven its versatility and interest in various activities. In Mr. Freeman ge!! 4 lift off 1112 field days gone by the band consisted of only i5 members and 0 bi' bi 'bd 9 the activities were limited to an annual chapel program, a few football games, and concerts at various Junior Highs. A far cry from these older bands, the band of today under the able guidance of their new director, Mr. Jess Freeman, has added many credits to their achievements. To get the band off to a snappy start a new eight-step-to-the- five-yard-line tempo was adopted and received the immediate approval of the fans. The band presented a variety of colorful half-time shows including its special feature of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of our first Lehi trophy. To end the marching season the 18 senior band members were given special recognition as appreciation of their service. Assemblies, pep rallies, the annual spring concert, and June commencement topped the list of activities this year. At the 1898 graduation the strains of the first student orchestra were heard echoing through the halls of L.H.S. The orchestra at this early date consisted of two first vio- lins, one second violin, a viola, a piano, a piccolo, a flute and a clarinet. There was no director, but the choral director would give advice when needed. The first paid conductor was Griff Jones, who in l9l6 wrote Lorain High school's Alma Mater. Since the time of Mr. Jones, Lorain High school has had seven able directors, including the present director, Mr. Jess Freeman. This year the orchestra has played for the annual operetta, the Christmas concert with the choirs, commencement, programs at the iunior high schools, the Lake Erie League Festival held at Cleveland Heights, and an all-city orchestra program. Teacher aides are very helpful in the service they give in correcting papers, taking roll and running numerous errands. Attendance aides' work consists of admitting absentees, issuing tardy permits, recording detentions, tardiness and ab- sentees on student record cards. Library aides help Miss Pitts and Mrs. Tipton in the morning and also during their study halls by collecting and sorting permits, carding and shelv- ing books and giving needed information to the students wishing help. Guidance aides, under the supervision of Mrs. Mehlow and Mr. Jones, give their service to the school by filing schedule cards, delivering call slips and completing small iobs which mean much in the efficient running of the guidance office. The principaI's aides act in about the same capac- ity as the guidance aides. Next in line are the Book Room aides who hand out books at the be- ginning of the semester and see to it that all the books are returned again before school closes The lighting crew deserves a great deal of recog nltlon Pretty gurls in colorful formals add atmosphere to all the important programs held at the high school These are Usherettes, who along with the others herein mentioned help to make all LHS activities and accomplishments what they are ll A dlton Girls' Guidance aides are: lseatedl Maureen O'NeiI, Mary Jane Hrinda and Adrienne Hague, lstandingl Hallie Miller, Elaine Skrepich, Valerie Jensen, Cheryl Harshberger, Mari- anne Duskey and Janet Croskey.
