The Dolphins was dis- banded at the end of the first semester. A new Hi-Y club was organized the second semester with Mr. Calta as faculty adviser, and Dick Yurovich as president. The Hi-Y club is affiliated with the Y.M.C.A. Any boy in high school is eligible. The purpose of the Hi-Y club is threefold: to aid any school activity, to aid any civic group, and to undertake projects. This organization was able to finance a New York City trip for members Dick Yurovich, Don Shook, Roth Ashby, and Williani Hoenig, who excelled in knowledge in regard to the United Nations. -Q' Top row: Mr. Lariinore. Vicefprc-idem Student Council in Action Principles of America . EVERY INDIVIDUAL MUST DEAL FAIRLY WITH OTHERS . . . I Team Work Whether it is the team work of the Varsity Football Squad or the parliamentary procedure of the Student Council, the smooth, efficient cooperation of all members working together for the good of all is the keynote of success in both of these L.H.S. organizations. If our students are to take their rightful place in our democratic society, then they should learn democracy before leaving school. just as our legislative bodies are representative of the people, the Student Council is representative of the stud- ent body. It strives toward the betterment of Lorain High School, according to the wishes of the student body. The Student Council is composed of sixty-five members, chosen for scholarship, integrity, and good citizenship. With Mr. Jones as adviser, the Council has done a splendid job of managing student government. Among other things the Council has this year revised the school election system, greatly increased the school's social activities, taken over the selling of food at games, and given financial aid to several deserving school organizations. Mr. Jones, the executive committee, and the Student Council are to be commend- ed for an extra-special job. Seidner, Principal One of the most important functions of a modern high school is to acquaint its students with the democratic way of life. Since his arrival in Lorain in 1948, Mr. Earle R. Seidner has had much suc- cess in accomplishing this task, for he has encouraged students to plan and carry out their own activities. He has shown a strong de- sire to give boys and girls as much voice as possible in school affairs, and he therefore has taken a great interest in the Student Council as well as other school clubs. Mr. Seidner has advocated more school activities, more student participation in assemblies, and more all school dances. He backed the Senior Distinction Day, and was instrumental in the installation of a system in which students plan their own schedules, choosing the teachers that they desire for each particular subject. Mr. Seidner will be remembered as the principal who has shown by example that the democratic way is the best road for both a school and a nation. C. C. Lovewell, Assistant Superintendent Mr. C. C. Lovewell, assistant superin- tendent of Lorain schools, has among his diverse responsibilities the super- vision of the high school. He has been instrumental in the adoption of the testing program and in the addition of new subjects to the curriculum. Dr. C. W. Woolcock, Superintendent Dr. Cyril W. Woolcock has proven himself to be a strong promoter of child welfare in his three years as superintendent of Lorain schools. He has worked hard with community lead- ers and with school personnel to make the Lorain schools the best in the area. L.H.S. Guidance Counselors Mr. Sarles, the senior counselor, per' forms the usual counseling function of guiding students on personal, social, academic, and vocational prohlems. His special emphasis is on college enf trance and full time employment place' ment for graduating seniors. He also directs such senior activities as Closing Hour, Recognition Day, and Commenccf ment. Miss Prussing is counselor for the eleventh grade, and her duties include helping the juniors with their educaf tional and vocational planning. She also helps students find partftime jobs, talks with parents, and assists with perf sonal problems. As the only woman counselor, she often talks with girls from the other two grades. Mr. Calta, the sophomore counselor, is concerned especially with helping the tenth grade pupils to become adjusted to their present situation in high school, and with planning their futures in line with their interests, abilities, and social needs. Orientation programs with em' phasis upon the study of educational and extra-curricular opportunities withf in the high school are presented to all sophomores. A testing program, an individual conference with every sophf omore in planning his schedule, and orientation programs for the four junf ior high schools keep the sophomore counselor occupied. The Hi Standard, the bi-weekly publication of Lorain High school, was first published in 1920. The aim of the Hi-Standard is not only to inform, but also to promote projects for the betterment of the school. Senior Distinction Day and Summer Dances are only two of the many projects the Hi-Standard has promoted in the past year. Under the capable guidance of Mr. Martini, the staff has done an excellent job this year in re- porting the general news items, sports news, in- formation about Lcrain I-Iigh's students, and hu- man interest stories. Hi-Standard Business Staff The Business Staff is a group that does a big job with little chance to bask in the limelight. Their quiet efficiency makes possible the publication of both the Hi-Standard and the Scimitar. Subscribing ads, setting the ad line, and circulating both publications keep the business manager and her staff on their toes. This is one of the finest examples of unselfish team work to be found at L. H. S. The Editorial Staff gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of the Business Staff and their adviser, Mr. Cook. Cmnt-1.1 Sclmltar Editorial Staff In using the American Way of Life as the theme of our 1951 year book, the Scimitar Edi- torial Staff has tried to create something that will be not only a record of this school year, but an evidence that L. H. S. has set the pattern of fundamental American principles in everyday school life. As the Scimitar goes to press, a wiser-but not sadder-staff realizes the enormity of their task. It was not easy, but a loyal, willing staff worked hard and liked it. The staff presents the 1951 Scimitar to the students of L. H. S., hoping they will find plea- sure in scanning its pages and recalling the events of a happy school year. Distributive Education These senior students who are enrolled in Distributive Education under the co-operative part-time plan earn while they learn. Eager to have a head start in their chosen vocation, they divide their time between school and business, receiving specialized training in retailing as well as a general knowledge of store operation. You find them here at work in the laboratory developing two of the important skills in retail- ing, display work and fabric identification. All the Lorain High School D. E. students are affiliated with the Distributive Education Clubs of America, and are members of the Ohio asso- ciation. Their activities have included field trips to stores, manufacturing plants, and experimental laboratories. The club also attended the north- east Ohio regional convention of DECA at Kent University last fall. ,X The members 0 the D E class dress up Windows or Christmas Sixty Three ATIONA 25 ,fp l','i Wvunre' ,pn- 'W Barbara Aten William Kimmel oan Lorldas Mary Pletromlca Martha Teleha Aix lp'-we if 4-4? Band Parades, pep rallies, Carnivals, basketball and football games-any place music was needed-there was Lorain High School's sixty-four piece band ably filling the bill. Led by the high-stepping drum majors and majorettes, the band presented many colorful performances which were well received both at home and away. Besides playing for school assemblies, for sports and parades, the band participated in many civic affairs. Beautiful music echoed through the high school as they presented a varied and entertaining spring concert on April sixth. A very successful year was brought to a close when the band played at the June outdoor commencement. The roughest and most bruising contest of the year was the tie with Fremont, 6-6. The Steelmen next met Cuyahoga Falls, a much lighter and faster team. It was a fight to the finish, but when the gun sounded, the Steelmen had won 20-13. Lorainis first LeHi League contest was against Cleveland Heights. This was a high scoring game which the Steelmen won 33-26. Playing their first afternoon game in years with Shaker Heights, the Steelmen won a very muddy game 7-0. Sandusky was rated as one of the top ten teams in the state and was expected to run over Lorain, but the Steelmen came home with a well deserved 20-20 tie. In a very disappointing game the Steelmen were given their first defeat by Lake- wood 20-7. The Steelmen next traveled to Shaw. Both teams fought to a standstill in the cold rain. The game was decided by the extra point when the ball bounded the wrong direction after hitting the goal post. The game ended with Lorain behind 7-6. Lorain stomped over Elyria, our traditional rivals, by sending them to defeat 25-7. All season long the Steelmen proved themselves a team that never gave up. Football boys enjoy eating at the camp. Varsity Basketball Team Mr. Henry Hank Beganie, the head basketball coach and sophomore football coach, came to Lorain in August of 1949 from Jefferson, Ohio. He came ori- ginally from Cleveland, where he starred in sports at John Marshall High School. Recently Coach Beganie was recalled into the Army Air Force, but not before he had established an excel- lent record for his two years at Lorain. His sophomore football record was exceptional. In two years he coach- ed his teams to two Lake Erie League sophomore foot- ball championships, the first for the Lorain sopho- more since the League was started in 1933. His basketball record, although his teams did not win any championships, was very good. His 1949-50 team was second in the Lake Erie League, the highest place Lorain has held for over two years. The 1950-51 team won ten games and lost ten. Lorain is sorry to lose a fine coach, but our best wishes go with Captain Beganie in his new work.
