H6571 English Department English, as taught in our school, is the learning of gram- mar, practical application, literature, journalism, public speaking, and dramatic arts. A new course, Senior Eng- lish, was added to the curriculum and consists of a dis- cussion of works in all literatures. It furnishes the stu- dent with a good cultural background to serve him as a means of a finer appreciation of the great literatures of the world. Our high school is making a real contri- bution to better living today and tomorrow. Foreign Languages Department A knowledge of foreign languages is becoming more and more important today as the nations of the world are brought closer together by modern transportation. Now, more than ever before, it is necessary for people of different nations to be able to discuss thoroughly and calmly the problems that arise, so as to bring about a peaceful, happy world. In the spirit of this ideal, the United Nations was con- ceived. In the understanding of all peoples lies the hope for peace in the world. A group of French, Span- ish, and German students, symbolizing their respective nations, illustrate the belief that people .of different backgrounds and ideas can live together happily and peacefully. Nineteen Twenty New voting machines will be used in the municipal election this fall. Social Sci- ence students had a pre- view of the new look in voting. flllllb Q , rcxmmiw MM gif Social Science Department The intricacies of our government, the steps leading up to our present-day system, and the problems that arise in it are the important ideas emphasized in the study of social science. The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow and must be well-trained and able to meet this responsibility. The study of government furnishes the pupil with the necessary information and back- ground, so that he will be able to cope successfully with the perplexing problems that confront us. Mathematics Department A greater development of the powers of reasoning is offered to students taking advanced math courses. Com- mon sense is the basic factor in learning how to solve problems. Deciding what the problem actually is and then using the shortest and best method of solving it are the duties of each student. These methods are taught to the pupil, and he is urged to understand the reason- ing behind it. This training prepares the student to con- tinue his study of mathematics in higher schools of learn- ing and prepares him for a future occupation in this field. 4-...Q-Q5 a--- Problems in surveying land were the task assigned to the trigonometry class. With the help of the transit and the mathematical knowledge gained in tlheir classrooms, these students hope to com- plete their job satisfactor- ily 'l'wentyfOne X Here seated are several students studying the prin- ciple of steam power. The steam engine may be a mere toy, but it Works in repre- sentation of a sound physi- cal principle. Tu entx Two Science Department Science is a branch of study concerned with observation and classification of facts and with the establishment of verifiable general laws, chiefly by induction and hy- pothesis. We all enjoyed the study of physics and know it has a future use for all of us. Some students Will, probably, continue in that field of work. The foundations received in thigh school science will better prepare one to meet the responsibility and problems that arise in the future. Az '?:.- . -Qft. Woodworking develops the skill of the hands and produces many useful and beautiful articles for the home. TlL'C71lj FOll7' i --.....,...,.. Industrial Arts Department The first step in America toward industrial training as a part of the public school system was made about 1870 when mnual training was introduced into many high schools. Manual training had no relationship to voca- tional education, as it was merely an element of culture and general efficiency. Today industrial arts has be- come an important phase of education in high school, with large modern, Well-equipped shops, and teachers especially prepared in this subject. 6 ef' X .J mfr-Qfxiai-f asia. f . ,2:1ff'54:1f25: ' ,'1'-7.1-233:15 . iff' ' JP -- - ymt. The best method of preparing food and the most desirable combinations to serve are dis- cussed and experimented with by the girls. Home economics includes instructions in sewing, as Well. The girls are instructed in the choosing and testing of textile fabrics, in the use and care of sewing machines, and the most suitable and becoming style of clothing for every occasion. With eager anticipation, the home economics class pre- pared the food and set the table for a Well-balanced meal. 'TwentyfFiue ffl Christmas time was a merry time as art students pre- pared novelties for use at Veterans Hospitals for Christmas parties. Santcfs chimney was to add the Christmas touch in the dhoir program. nryfsix git ,, it Q ,g,. ,M p ',,.: Fine Arts Department Painting landscapes and flowers in Water colors is an important phase of the art course. Slcetching each other is an enjoyable pastime of these students. However, oil painting is the most expressive method. It is capable of far richer effects, may be handled and applied in a mul- titude of ways, and can be easily worked over. During the past year, more elaborate and unusual scenery has been produced by this class for the production of the operetta and the school play. Physical Education and Health Department To many of us, sports have played an important part in making these the best years of our lives. The many hours spent in the various outdoor and indoor sports not only helped us to understand the meaning of good sportsmanship, but also have taught to us the im- portance of true friendship. It was fun to win in competitive games, but it was more fun to play together and win with the team. The spirit of competition was always keen, but we learned, above all, to play according to the rules of the game. Tumbling and acrobatics developed a keen sense of balance and muscular con- trol. It Wasn't easy to be graceful, and so We all ad- mired the skillful acrobatic artist. '1'wentyfSeven Our Principal T ent3'fE1'gl1t L No long story is necessary to introduce our principal, Mr. Shook. His friendly counsel, congenial manner, and helpfulness have made him for all students a real princi- PAL. Under his direction the year's program was plan- ned and realized. His contribution to our school life helped to make this year among the best of our exper- ience. Uur Superintendent Words cannot portray adequately the influence of our superintendent, Mr. Luttrell. His was the job of manag- ing the entire school system so that for all children in our school system the past year could always be remem- bered as one of the best years they Would recall. Our school progress Was essentially due to his vision and foresight. School finances as reported in the clerk's statement call for serious consideration. Busily at Work The Board of Education operates the Lorain School system. It is the governing body of the schools, planning the activities, and erecting new buildings. The choice of books and the curriculum in general are decided upon by these men. They are elected by the citizens of Lorain and play an important part in school and com- munity affairs. Members of the Board of'Education are A. E. Miller, presidentg David Mowrey, vice-president, Roland Horn, Dr. Walter S. Nielsen, and Joseph Svete. Charles A. Hartz is clerk-treasurer, and Walter Pillans is business manager. Purchasing supplies for a large school system call for careful and thoughtful action upon the business managefs report. .wuz Thirty? ive The best year of our lives because of... In an atmosphere of profound mystery, members of the 1948-.A class listened to clever toasts, observed unique table decorations, and sat back to relax and laugh at witty jests at the expense of the faculty and good-natured classmates. Toastmaster Joe Wolozanski presided over the occasion while Ger- trude Beyer, Dick Kaufer, Pauline Coats, and Mr. F. H. Smith were banquet speakers. The happiness of the banquet will live in our hearts and memories long after we have finished our futile quest for Who Dunit? rOur banquet was another reason why our senior year will help to remind us of the best year of our lives. ' Gay couples and soft music made the senior prom a happy occasion. To and Fro the Dancers Go We will always remember the senior prom. Gliding across the floor to the enchanting music of Johnny Bove's orchestra is now only a dream of the past, but one which will live forever in our minds. Anyone stopping by the new Scimitar office after school could see members occu- pied with writing copy, identi- fying pictures, selecting pic- tures to be used, mounting pic- tures, and organizing the ma- terial. The Unseen Hands That Made Work Light Running off absentee reports is one of the many jobs of the mimeographers. A daily activity of the mimeo- graphers is that of running off absentee reports. They save time for many teachers by mimeo- graphing their tests and examina- tions. T'hey also make Senior A programs and Senior B programs for the senior activities. The mim- eographers gain a knowledge of how to use the mimeograph ma- chine and mimescope. These aids not only contribute much to the school but also prepare them- selves for future secretarial work. Pleasure Was Their Business A few stage hands are seen backstage just before curtain time. It is through the efforts of the movie operators that we are able to enjoy the noon movies. These boys have given up their time in order that we might spend the last fifteen minutes of our lunch period at the show.', They also show movies in A-11, so that We may receive additional education through films. The stage hands contribute much to our enjoyment also. These are the boys that are responsible for moving scenery, lighting and cleaning up at all our school pro- ductions. Our Steelmen Playing before a capacity crowd of 7,000 spectators, the Lorain Steelmen opened their season with a 13 to 0 triumph over Akron North. Sparked by the fine playing of Bob Dover and the superb blocking of Luther Charlton, the Pryormen came forth with a very commendable showing by turning back a stubborn Cleveland West eleven 25 to 0. Coming back in a bruising 4th period the Steuben- lc Hzmtircd rl-'CTI ville Big Red smothered Lorain's hopes hy dealing them a 14 to 6 defeat. Although they were defeated, the Steelers proved that they could make a good showing against the top teams in the State. The high spirited Cleveland Heights team handed Lorain their worst Lake Erie League defeat, a 41 to 0 drubbing. After a 12 to 12 deadlock with Shaker, Lorain's Steelmen, led hy Dover's 60, 56, and 47 yard runs, romped to a thrilling 34 to 6 decision over the Sandusky Streaks. It was in this game that the talented toe of Boh Zeigman split the uprights with 4 out of 5 extra point attempts. Ln every phase of the game vast improvement due to the return of regulars, was significant with every man sharing in the victory. Lo- rain then defeated Lakewood and Shaw, 27 to 20 and 14 to 6, re- spectively. Then was the game everyone looked forward tog could Lorain defeat the undefeated Elyria eleven? Playing before a pack- ed Stadium, Lorain surprised everyone but Coach Pryor who ex- pected victory, by allowing Elyria a mere 7 to 6 victory. Lorain, giving no quarter and asking none, gave Elyria a toe to toe battle. When the smoke cleared away from the field Lorain had wound up a successful season and had also uncovered talent that will prove in- teresting to watch next season. Dover chases ball on kick off.
