Miss Long and Mr. Hickman open the doors of the Girls' and Boys' Guidance Offices to Lorain High School. Their first great task of the day is the issuing of absence permits to those who have returned to school. The yellow permit allows a student to make up his work, and the white one says No Some of their other numerous duties are having guidance conferences with students, making out schedules, admitting and instructing new pupils, and discussing delinquency problems. For those who become ill during the day, there is a health room next to Miss Long's office. Five of the sixtyfsix girls who assist Miss Long have charge of it. Mr. Hickman has fiftyfthree boys who, like the girls, act as guidance secretaries and general aids. Wittenberg College, Ohio ry. CTE

and its ACHIEVEME PERSONS WHO-SUCCESSFULLY MANAGE THE SCHOOL Few students realize the vital importance that the Board of Edf ucation plays in our school life. It is the mainstay of our whole school system. The services of the group include the administration of the financial program of the schools, employment of teachers and other school help, awarding of contracts, provision of books and supplies, proposal of school levies, supervision of school building cnstructions, prescription of courses and the promotion of school life in general. Mr. Hartz, ClerkfTreasurer of the board, keeps the financial rec' ord of the schools and Mr. Pillans, Business Manager, supervises the physical property of the board, such as buildings, additions, repairs and maintenance of their property. The board consists of seven members who are elected by the people for a term of three years. Their services are entirely voluntary and they receive no compensation other than appreciation from the community citizens. Dr. S. V. Burley, eye, ear, nose, and throat spef cialist is president of the Board of Education. D. W. Lawrence, now serving as the Appeals agent for Draft Board No. 2 and vicefpresif dent of the Board, retired from the Welfare Department of the Na' tional Tube Company in 1940. Dr. Walter S. Nielsen is both an op' tometrist and jeweler. Joseph A. Svete is prominent as an attorneyfatf law, and Philip Austin is the assistantfsuperintendent of the power department of the National Tube Company. Nine Seated from left to rightf- W. A.
