PEOPLE WHO IN 42-A 'LI pledge myself to uphold the high purf poses of this society to which I have been elected, striving in every way, by word and deed, to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life. To be a candidate for membership in the National Honor Society, a student must rank in the upper third of his class in schof larship. Teachers who are familiar with the candidates grade them in leadership and character. Their high school service is an im' portant factor. Those who have the highest composite score automatically become eligif ble to take the National Honor Society pledge, printed above. From the members ranking highest in scholarship, leadership, character, and ser' vice in each graduating class, the faculty may name as many as fifteen per cent for induction into the society. The three complex in Lorain High School athletics is noticeable. Lorain managed to capture third place in the Lake Erie League football and tennis standings, as Well as the basketball division. The Lorain team this year had a near 50 f SO season, having won seven and lost eight of the regular league season contests. Lorain also dropped one of the two games of the tournament at Kent, having been beaten 29 f 38 by Barberton after taking the large end of a 38 f 10 score from Akeron Hovver. The death of Steve Dovak, mourned by the Whole school, has deprived the 1943 squad of one of their most promising cagers. The above sentence, found on the bottom of one of the notices from Pete Smith, tells in a few words the purpose of the intramural program as it is operated in Lorain High School. Under the guidance, direction, and leadership of Mr. W. A. Smith this sports program has made rapid advancement in the last few years. At the beginning of the intramural program in 1936 there was but one activity. Today, Lorain High boys enjoy basketball, volleyball, softball, table tennis, checkers, and the use of Mr. Smith's sports library. The trend seems to be away from the 'big time' sports such as football and toward the intramural prof gram. I certainly hope that we can continue this ideal, said Mr, Smith. PEOPLE WHO PUBLISHED THE 1942 SCIMITAR Few people and many pursuits-thatt's the Scimitar Staff which is occupied from September until June with getting out Lorain High School's year book. If you want to be a member, you must have good grades, lots and lots of time, and interest. Journalism is not a requirement, but a decided advantage. Long hours of work are compensated by pleasant companionship and a published book. When the three experienced members of the staff, Joan Irish, Dick Prucha and Ed Kattas graduated in January, a completely inexperienced group was left. Bob Smith was then appointed editor. Mr. Oliver was the walkingfencylopedia of general knowledge while Mr. Dobras helped with the copy. Mr. Davis took our class, club, and team pictures. In the upper left hand picture Elayne MacFarland and Bob Washtak proof read names on the class copy. Q Joan Irish, January Editor, vainly attempted to pick the right picture for the opening section fin the upper right cornerj. Upper left circle, Selma Lerner paused in her working of marking pictures to be cut. Janice Pickel busily applied the cutter to trimming senior formal pictures that Jean Boyce had marked and checked. The lower center picture shows Wallace Brasen as he dictated material to Evelyn Steele who typed it for the printer. Watch th birdie, was Mr. Davis, expression to all underclassmen and club groups that had pictures taken last fall. Steve Zahorec, in the lower left hand corner studied the archery club panel in preparation for lettering it. Holding the light in the next picture for an indoor photo, is Ed Kattas. The small circle pictures Mr. Dobras. Dick Prucha thumbed through an exchange year book to view another school's ideas for publication. In the next picture Mr. Oliver is seen as he read copy before it was sent to the printer. N Bob Smith, June Editor, in the lower right corner picture, tore his hair when he found a mistake. Away back in 1770, the English Parliament passed a law against Women trying to beguile men into marriage. This law provided that any woman who shall impose upon, seduce and betray into matrimony any of his Majesty's male sub' jects, by virtue of scents, paints, cosmetic washes, artificial teeth, false hair, Spanish wool, iron stays, bolstered hips or highfheeled shoes would incur the penalty of witch' craft then in force, and the marriage would be pronounced null and void. HAVE A HEALTHY FAMILY! O Your Electrical Servant CQ Food can win the war . . . but to make sure that it will, you must do your part by preparing it properly so that your family gets all the health-giving vitamins and strength-building minerals it contains. It doesn't do any good if you cook away all the healthful properties that nature puts into foods. Many persons eat enough food in quantity, but they are deprived of its real goodness by improper cooking. That is why your Government wants every homemaker to remember these important facts: 1, Use prac- tically no watery 2, Keep tlae cooking utensil tiglatbf covereai' 3, Cook vegetables rapidly, but avoid violent boilingg 4, Save the juices for soaps and gravies. These are only a few of the simple rules. You'll find they are all easy to follow if you cook electrically because you have complete, accurate con- trol of cooking times and temperatures.
