Let u build here a city of God On a sunny Sunday afternoon, July 28, 1968, Bishop Clarence Issenman proudly broke ground for a new Catholic high school to serve the Lorain area. Karen Robertson, then only eight years old, did her best to help. On June 4, 1978, nearly ten years later, Karen graduated from that new school--our own Lorain Cath- olic. The shovel used in the ground- breaking ceremony has since been engraved and mounted. Here Karen, a member of the Holy Trinity parish in Lorain, poses with the shovel outside the LC chapel. For the tradition-minded, we've printed below some excerpts from the Lorain JOURNAL of June 29, 1968. L S Lorain Catholic hi h ground broken The sun beamed from an almost cloudless sky and a slight breeze cooled the air yesterday as hundreds of Lorain area citizens gathered to break ground for Lor- ain Catholic High School. It is scheduled to open in September of 1969. They filled a clearing in the midst of a wooded area off Falbo Avenue and Tower Boule- vard. James D. Lonergan, master of ceremonies for the event, said, God gave us one of his best days. He called it a good omen for a great venture. The most Rev. Clarence G. Issenman, bishop of Cleveland, also judged the beautiful day as a good omen. He went on to recognize the vision and courage of those who had dreamed and planned for the new high school. Bishop Issenman said the goal of the schools and society is to develop whole individuals. Parents and other citizens seek to provide from their children and for generations to come, trustful relationships between all men in our society, he said. The Bishop read the formal religious groundbreaking ceremony. He was assisted by the Very Rev. A. James Quinn, vice chancellor of the Diocese from St. John Cathedral, Cleveland. The Very Rev. Msgr. Richard E. McHale, superintendent of the Dio- cese of Cleveland schools, urged the community, Let us all together build here a city of God. Ground was broken with a plated, ornamented shovel furnished by Kohlmeyer Supply Co.
