Karen Robertson, then only eight years old, did her best to help. On June 4, 1978, nearly ten years later, Karen graduated from that new school--our own Lorain Cath- olic. Below, Bishop Issenman welcomes the seniors at . X S 'v 3 L 3 W 1 xl xx X . fr f kia ' ef' A' A it s 4 K S 5 1,-tty. t 3 g ,gxty ,. ' L. ew 3 that Baccalureate Mass. The shovel used in the ground- breaking ceremony has since been engraved and mounted. Here Karen, a member of the Holy Trinity parish in Lorain, poses with the shovel outside the LC chapel. For the tradition-minded, we've printed below some excerpts from the Lorain JOURNAL of June 29, 1968. L S Lorain Catholic hi h ground broken The sun beamed from an almost cloudless sky and a slight breeze cooled the air yesterday as hundreds of Lorain area citizens gathered to break ground for Lor- ain Catholic High School. It is scheduled to open in September of 1969. They filled a clearing in the midst of a wooded area off Falbo Avenue and Tower Boule- vard. James D. Lonergan, master of ceremonies for the event, said, God gave us one of his best days. He called it a good omen for a great venture. The most Rev. Clarence G. Issenman, bishop of Cleveland, also judged the beautiful day as a good omen. He went on to recognize the vision and courage of those who had dreamed and planned for the new high school. Bishop Issenman said the goal of the schools and society is to develop whole individuals. Parents and other citizens seek to provide from their children and for generations to come, trustful relationships between all men in our society, he said. The Bishop read the formal religious groundbreaking ceremony. He was assisted by the Very Rev. A. James Quinn, vice chancellor of the Diocese from St. John Cathedral, Cleveland. The Very Rev. Msgr. Richard E. McHale, superintendent of the Dio- cese of Cleveland schools, urged the community, Let us all together build here a city of God. Ground was broken with a plated, ornamented shovel furnished by Kohlmeyer Supply Co. 4 Signs of dedication Academics A concerned administration works for Being a high school principal is always a thank- less task. When you're principal of a Catholic school facing inflation, money shortages, gas shortages, killing blizzards, and falling roofs, the problems increase a hundred-fold. For three years S ister John Mary Baker, an educator and admini- strator who learned patience by washing dishes two and a half years before taking final vows, dealt capably and firmly with these and many other problems. She gained not just patience but skill from her years teaching in Detroit, Chicago's Westchester suburb, and at Cleveland Central Catholic, and brought to Lorain Catholic her knowledge: degrees in Biology and English, a Master's Degree from Notre Dame University, and administrative work at Chicago's DePaul Uni- versity. As if her work at LC wasn't exhausting enough, she took time out in the summer to work with the handicapped. Here at LC, she urged the teachers to give more time and concern to the students, and encouraged the students to use their free time wisely while changing the schedule to assure them of an in-depth education. As she puts it, That's my big thing--showing where every- thing fits and having them see it. Otherwise, when they're through with school, they have a 'file drawer' mentality and they're not really edu- cated. She didn't want that to happen here. Too often, these three years, we've failed to see S ister John Mary's dedication in facing the many ob- stacles laid before her and in serving as a symbol of leadership that we could follow. Now, as she leaves Lorain Catholic, we want to offer our be- lated thanks for all she has done for the school and for us. it it the betterment of the school . - 'R L QW Ixos, .V Being assistant principal at a high school calls for a combination of Cary Grant, President Carter, and Jack the Ripper. While we may not have gotten ex- actly that, we did get a master of many talents to fill that position. Mr. Dennis Demcho is the owner, de- signer, builder, and repairer of golf clubs at his Demcho Golf Club Repair shop, and in the past he has been a gas station mechanic, a teacher in Bay Vllage, a stock car driver, assistant course manager and teaching pro in Avon Lake, and a policeman with the Sheffield Lake Police Department. His ex- perience as a policeman was a big help when he be- came Lorain Catholic's Dean of Men, which in turn prepared him to handle the problems that daily be- siege an assistant principal. He spends every minute of the day on the go, which makes getting a picture of him almost impossible! As he puts it, I'm going to live every minute as full as I can live. And as I go along, if I can help one person throughout each day, I'm having a good time and my day's com- plete. WORK? Alien creatures stalked the halls of LC as Mr. Cataldo's art classes filmed a 16 millimeter color science-fiction movies called 100 MOONS. Mr. Cataldo, Miss Leavell, and members of the Science Fiction class wrote most of the script, which involves a class from another planet going on a field trip and getting entangled in an interplanetary war with the Zymots labovel, ugly red aliens. From the very beginning, when arriving couples were met by valets to help the women out and whisk the car away, it was an evening of sophisti- cation. The spiritual side of this night was also evident as Father Martello, the chaplain of Lorain Catholic, cele- brated Mass in the chapel. The Publicity Committee--chaired by Tami Amiri--saw that elections ran smoothly and invited students from many area schools to visit L C. The students received on-the-job training while winning many awards for merchanising, public relations work, and so on. This year, Miss Shufflin and a group of enthusiastic Seniors organized a new group, the Pep Club. Although it was new, the club was far from inactive. They held a breakfast for the varsity football team the morning of the EC game, and it was such a success that they held a dinner in the Com- mons for the varsity basketball team before the Columbia game. As a sign of spirit, the Pep Club also sold attractive red Bleacher Bums teeshirts and spirit buttons for the EC game. Their wild cheering and flaming red pom-poms urged our teams onward throughout the year. ey gang! After a slow start, I was pleased with the progress we made the second half of the year -- that's really what we based the whole season on, so we could get a good start next year. About mid-season, we started coming around. We owe much of our success to the way the Seniors held in there. It was a suc- cessful season -- not recordwise, but in other ways. It was a good season for my first year, and hopefully the start of a really good football team next year. ---Coach Rocky Hammond Rich Kobasic, Ken McMahon, and Gary Al- legretto battle against Elyria West. .Ss MVP Craig DiFilippo MV Lineman Jim Campo Coach's Award Bill Gilles lst Team All Ohio Dave Burns All Lorain County Ron Reber in Craig DiFilippo .4 Spartan Man ofthe Year ---- Dave Burns lAt left! Spirit at Lorain Catholic is not dead, and our effervescent cheerleaders are the symbol of that fighting spirit. Their expertise and enthusiasm was shown in new cheers and towering pyramids. They built up team spirit by decorating the team lockers, and gave the school new life by planning and performing such crazy routines as the Little Red Riding Hood and EC Coneheads pep rallies. The varsity football cheerleaders ignored goosebumps to cheer in winter cold, the varsity basketball cheerleaders overcame the heat of a crowded gym to put on stunning new routines, and the Freshman and JV cheerleaders eagerly followed their shining ex- ample. tRightD Diane Urig towers over the JV and varsity basketball cheerleader pyramid. This was not easy since only Tim Diamond and Miss Leavell, who wrote and typed all the copy, were working on it. After putting in eight hour days, five times a week -- and sometimes sneaking in during Bingo on Sundays -- we are both rather frazzled, but we want to record our struggle for posterity. First, anything that is successful in this book is due to Tim's hard work. He wrote the opening poem, laid out every page, cropped all of the pictures, sweated over the artistic design, and gave up all hope of a summer job Cor even a vacation! for this book. Our thanks also go to Jacki Stanley -- the second-hardest worker, who spent untold hours in the darkroom -- Maria Costa, Dorothy Pentito, Marilyn Klingshirn, Ken Hoholski, Scott Roth, and Svat Studios. Not to mention. . .the Freshmen who smoked in the darkroom l I don'tsee how you can call that immature, Miss Leavell! D . . .the Senior who said, Oh, don'tworry, I'll get the baseball copy. lSee page 1307. .. the 53 students who signed up to work on the yearbook . . .the co-editor of the book who never showed up . . .the Senior who said, I'll do the Senior Index. lDon't look, it isn't herel . . , the student who inter- viewed all the teachers lbut forgot sixl . . . the student who never interviewed Coach Hammond . . . the assorted students who did NOT sell ads . . . and St. Jude, the patron of hopeless causes. We will remember these deathless phrases: Why are there brown spots on all the pictures? Who has the key to the darkroom? Don't look at me. I thought Scott was gonna take the Blood Bank. She goes she goes she goes And Mary Jane just laughed and laughed Do this picture over again. And this one. And this one . . . Don't forget to get a picture of Mr. Demchol No sweat. You gotta go to Svat's again, Miss Leavell . . . When will we get the yearbook'? Who is this person in the second row, anyway? Who has the key to the student publications room? We have GOT to get this book done before I go to Ireland! Um, I'm sorry, Miss Leavell, but someone turned the light on when we were developing the film .... You mean the yearbook isn't finished YET? Ohmigod, I lost one of the ads! What happened to the roll of classroom shots'? It was scratched, so I threw it away. Don't forget to take the tennis team shots! Where's the negative for the movie candids? We can't find it .... There are no Copy Submitted Checklists! We can't send any pages in without Copy Submitted Checklists! 'Anybody remember summer vacation? I haven't seen the sun in two months.' There's no more room. It's either NHS, or Powder Puff Football. 'There's no room for pep rallies. That's okay -- all we had were pictures o Berni taken from different angles. Revco lost the picture for the title page. AGAIN'? Can we go home now? I'm two hours late for supper. Tacky, tacky, tacky ....
