S ' ecremry The Student Council, under the competent leadership of Mr. Orchard and Sandy Smith, brought to realization many projects which had long been merely conversation pieces. The most important event of the year was a two-day conference of the New England Student Government Association which was held at Loomis in December. Two hundred students, representing more than fifty New England schools, assembled to discuss the problems of their own school. The conference, the first of its kind to be held at Loomis, was a success. Midyear elections betrayed a sore need for a more accurate means of determining the council nominees. A new method of nomination was drawn up by the Council and inserted in the Constitution. With the guidance of Mr. Grubbs and Mr. Mun er, who advised the Council during Mr. Orchard's illness, a system was initiated to stimu ate greater cooperation between the councilors in each dormitory. Other plans brought about a Day-boyAdvisee system and Senior supervision of Study Hall. In March, the Council played host to delegates from Hotchkiss and Litchfield Junior Republic, who came to study the operations of our Council. After receiving constructive suggestions from the student body, the constitutional committee of Martin Nemirow and David Olds, under the-direction ofthe Student Council, thoroughly modernized the constitution. The new document was voted upon and accepted by the school. The Council this year also took charge of appointing the cheerleaders in an attempt to awaken interest in this important job and thus bolster school spirit. Back Row: D. Director The Loomis Glee Club opened an active and successful season by journeying to the Oxford School for a joint concert in December. Following close after this the Loomis Club joined with Chaffee for the traditional Christmas program, done this year entirely in Latin, in the Loomis Chapel. A A mid-term concert with Miss Hall's School at Loomis highlighted the winter term. At the beginning of the spring term the Glec Club participated in the twenty-third annual Preparatory Schools, Music Festival with the Clubs of Deerfield, Choate, Hotch- kiss, and Taft at the Bushnell Memorial Hall in Hartford. In the first part of May, seven- teen members of the Glee Club took part in The Gondoliersu at the Loomis Theater. Later on in this same month, the Loomis Club traveled to St. Margaret's School for a joint concert and informal dance. As is the custom, Loomis and Chafee ended the year by once again combining to present the annual Commencement concert at each school. FUTTF Back Row: J. C. Allen, Hall, W. Adviser This ear, JUNTO, the Loomis Community Chest, again appealed to the student body for fiinds. The eight-member committee, headed by Chassie MacLean, distributed over 352000 among twenty local, national, and international charitable institutions. In allocating its funds, JUNTO favored small, unpublicized groups and generally avoided giving to large, widely publicized and well supported organizations. As in the past, JUNTO gave to groups combating crippling diseases and organizations providing relief for victims of disaster, but it stressed giving to organizations that aid students at home and abroad. Donations were given to CARE, the Hartford Community Chest, Connecticut Junior Republic, Newington Home for Crippled Children, World University Service Fund, United Negro College Fund, and many small groups. The JUNTO committee made a sincere effort to keep the student body informed of its activities through Log articles, financial statements, and chapel talks. iff 'ihi sf i 2 .A ,- ,gi li f lik? - .1 Q PRESS CLUB Back Row: B. Bill Conlin and Sandra McDavid admirably portrayed Mr. and Mrs. George Antrobus, John Hurlburt and Joan Thompson, in the role of the Antrobus children, gave a firstarate performance, and Jane Fearer showed unusual acting ability in the portrayal of a fiercely pessimistic Cassandra-like g psy fortune teller. Charlotte Aquiviva's representation of Sabia, the cheerful maid, enlivened the play. The allegorical play was considered one of Mr. Oi-chard's most brilliant Loomis productions. The annual Christmas program was presented in the Chapel on December 11. Planned by Mr. Van Why, the entire service was conducted in Latin! Traditional Christmas passages were read bv Barrett Dower, Margaret Morrell, and Messrs. Grubbs, Campeau, Munger, and Van Why. A chorus of Loomis and Chaffee students directed by Mr. House and Mrs. Norris sang from the balcony. In May, Mr. Norris transported the school to Venice and Barataria for the production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliersf' Complications caused by mistaken identity were deli htfully ironed out b the cast of forty-six. The operetta was highlighted by the brilliant pergzrmances of Julie Allen and Charlie Fidlar, the starring gondoliers, and Nancy Ahern and Dodie Hearn, their lot-chosen wives. Mike Olds, Grandee of Spain, and Emily Even- son, his Duchess, played their parts to the hilt. Jeff Bowen as Luiz and Sandra McDavid as Casilda provided the love interest in the play. Other performers were Tony Keller, Al MacWhinney, John Howard, and Phil Meuller, the cohorts ofthe gondoliersg Betty Ann Erickson, Carol Richardson' and Dorothy Smith, the gondoliers' Sweethearts, and Marilyn Sharp and Merry Pierce, the vivacious Cachuca dancers. Inez, the nurse who cleared the mystery, was portrayed by Gail Baker. The chorus was directed by Mr. House and Mrs. Norris, and the musical accom animent was skillfully provided by Mr. George Hickok at the organ, Sue Shaffer and Jolin Paoletti at the pianos, and Andy Silber on percussion. The problems of stage setting were handled with near-professional finesse by the Stagehands Union, supervised by Mr. Morris Brown and Dave Hodson. YV? Inexperience and poor pass defense hindered what might liave been a successful season. The season opened hopefully as the Maroons tied one of the strongest Suffield teams it has ever met. Bill Conlin passed to co-captain Dick Atkinson for the only Loomis touch- down. The next week, Wilbraham jumped to a 19 point lead before the Islanders' attack caught fire. In the last period Atkinson scored, once on a 50-yard run and the second time on a pass completion, but the team lost, 19-13. In the game with Trinity freshmen, the Loomis s uad faced a bi ger and more ex- perienced team. Loomis was behind 19-0 until the finaili quarter when Elonlin scored on a quarterback sneak. The following Saturday, the Loomis eleven traveled to Taft. Dick Atkinson scored three times and scat-back Tom Walsh talleyed another touchdown, as the Maroons sent the Taft men to a 27f14 defeat. Promgoers saw Loomis defeated by Hotchkiss, 27-13, after the team failed to follow up a 13 point lead gained on touchdowns scored by Walsh and Atkinson. An undefeated Kent team retained possession of the Silver Spoon by trimming Loomis in the final game of the season. Dick Atkinson led the team with 42 points to his credit, followed by Bill Conlin and Tom Walsh, with 12 points each. Until the final Kent game, Loomis's average score was 13 points, compared with the opponent's average of 117. Co-captain Bill Schoonmaker led an aggressive line composed of Sandy Smith, Bill Hamilton, Ken Burford, Lew George, Dave Hodson, and Del Babb. The hard-driving backlield consisted of Bill Conlin, Dick Atkinson, Tom Walsh, and Matt Whitehead. Although Coach Erickson had to build a team this year with only three returning letter- men, the outlook of next year is brighter. 'UN ' .c fl ! Opening the season successfully, co-captain Tommy Dickinson led the Maroons over Kingswood, 3-1, and Charlie Mitchell netted two as Wilbraham was beaten, 4-1. Rick Roberts and Pete Hubbard then led the team to a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Kent booters. Playing at home to Deerfield, the Pelicans were tied 4-4 despite a double overtime. After trampling Avon 6-1, Skip Britton and Rick Roberts each scoring twice, the team traveled to Taft, where they suffered their first defeat in fifteen games, by the respectable score of 2-1. The loss of the game, however, was overshadowed by the loss for the remainder of the season of both co-captain Bob Hall and Bob Cowles, both suffering leg injuries during that game. John Daub performed well in the goal, saving ten, as Sufheld played to a 0-0 tie. In preparation for arch-rival Choate, the booters were tied by Hotchkiss 5-all as Tommy Dickinson scored two. Then, traveling to VVallingford, the Maroons put on a fine defensive performance but were overcome in the final quarter 3-1. Dave Long scored the lone tally for the Islanders. Individually, Tom Dickinson led the scoring with nine. Rick Roberts, Skip Britton, and Charlie Mitchell followed with five, four and three, respectively. Dave Long, Pete Hubbard, and Bob Cowles each hit for two. No credits would be complete without men- tion of the fine all-around performances of Bob Hall, Dirk Krot, Bill Bowman, and soph- omore John Davison. Next year's squad should continue this year's success, led by Bob Cowles and Charlie Mitchell, co-captains elect, and returnees Dave Long, Skip Britton, Sam Nuckols, Ted Crosley, and John Davison. ,if mai' it' 4 ,Qs 15 '- , rivfg,-, , am be-L 1 Q A ' W-3. aH'v'b?... Pacing the team in points was Bill Conlin with a total of 200 points for the season, followed by Captain Atkinson with 193, john Beniamin with 167, and Ben Schenck with 115. Playmaker Giff Hopkins and hard-fighting Julie Allen rounded out the Maroon and Gray quintet. The Loomies began their record-breaking 878 point season by trouncing Taft 74-60 on the home court, as Bill Conlin led the scoring with 26 points. Next, Choate fell victim to the powerful s uad 74-57. Suffield, Kent, and Cranwell proved no problem to the Loomis five, aidedtlwy the outstanding rebounding of Dick Atkinson. By far the best game played during the season was with Milford at Loomis. The team played well, but not well enough to beat the Milford men. . The Milford thriller was followed by a one point heart-breaker with Wilbraham, as the visitors sank the needed point in the final seconds of the game. Loomis, however, downed Deerfield by a decisive 13 points on the following Saturday night. The Erickson men lost to Williston by one point because of a close call by the referee, but regaining strength, Loomis hit the season's highest score in defeating Westminster 83-49. Quick- thinking Ben Schenck led the play-making end of the game. Suffield, for the second time, and St. .Thomas proved fair hunting for the team, to round out nine victories. Hopkins and Allen provided the needed backing for the Islanders. A second meeting with Wilbraham proved unsuccessful, as did the final game of the season with Mount Hermon. A strong drive by Loomis in the final minutes of the latter game was not enough, and the visitors took the event 54-53. Although next year's team will lack experienced veterans, prospects do not look too dim. High-scoring Phil Mueller, and Phil Bernstein look like starters for the team, along with Matt Whitehead, Bill Cash, and Dave Rollins. 1 V J- , 1 I' N-4 Lili' 'J ! The Maroon and Gray squad were hindered by a weakness in the lower weight classes, but the heavier weights more than made up for this deficiency as they widened the team's margin of victory in nearly every match. Coached by John Tiger Mulligan, the matmen opened at Springfield Boys' Club where they pinned the home team 19-11. The following week, the grapplers from Kent, seeking to avenge last year's defeat, rolled over the baffied and over-confident Loomis squad 24-6. The Coast Guard J.V. fell victim to their aggressive hosts 24-8, as Bob Brush, Rick Roberts, and John Howard all scored pins. Taft followed suit a week later as the Islanders easily swept that contest 23-8. The Tigers took on Brown Frosh this year and met overwhelming opposition in the form of a team with three New England Champions. Loomis gave way Z4-8 with Butch Weiner and Tim Thrall the only victors. In the next match, the Loomis heavyweights stole victory from under the noses of a cocky Choate team and pulled Loomis from behind to win 19-11. The Wooster club proved no match for the Pelicans as they swept all nine bouts, 35-0. In March, the whole team traveled to Boston for the Inter-Scholastics where the team captured fifth position in competition with more than thirty prep and high schools. Co- Captain Tim Thrall, who maintained an undefeated season, captured the New England Championship in the 177 pound class. J. V. The five weeks of active competition strengthened and improved the team despite its position on the short end of a 9-0 record. The season opened with an 11-0 loss to Deerfield and a 15-0 swamping at the hands of the Taft sextet. One particularly bright spot in this outing was the consistently brilliant play of Captain and Goalie, Charlie Mitchell, who scored a total of seventy-eight saves during the Taft encounter. Sophomore center, Don Swain, scored the first Loomis goal of the season as the team lost to Kent 8-1. Then, playing on home ice before a lar e Dedication Day crowd, the Islanders were defeated by the Westminster squad, 7-1, join Nichols scoring for Loomis. Showing a much improved defense, but a weak offense, the Islanders were beaten by Choate 7-0. In an exciting and surprising game, the Maroons played to a 5-2 loss at the hands of a powerful Hill team, the first school team from outside New England to play at the Island. Don Swain-and Terry Cordner both tallied for Loomis. Hotchkiss and the Taft J.V.'s triumphed by the respective scores of 5-1 and 2-1. Overall improvement was obvious in these last three games, but frequent penalties hurt the team's chances for breaking into the win column. In the final game of the season, the Deerfield team invaded the Island and left as victors ofa 5-1 scrap. Bob Cowles scored the only Loomis goal in the final period. Although inexperienced and usually overmatched, the Loomis icemen always fought hard and with determination against their opposition. The season was one of team effort with no one player standing out above the others. The '56-'57 season promises to be an interesting one with all but three players from this year's squad returning under co-captains elect Charlie Mitchell and Dave Caley. 4 1 -r-er -w--'- ' - rw I S 1 I l I 5 Q 3 r ' , fm X 1 -1 X' xi xi 5 Il My LX, N 'ff- l 1 I x.. The Maroon and Gray were power- ful at the plate, but their effectiveness was marred by poor fielding. Bill Conlin, moundsman and Co-Captain, had a successful season both on the mound and at the plate. Though Bill was hit hard on several occasions, he nevertheless finished with a winning 4-3 record and fanned 47 batsmen. He proved just as dangerous at the plate as he led the team with a .367 average. The Pelica-n's second-sacker, Matt Barrett, was right behind Conlin at the plate, garnering 12 hits in 40 trips for a .300 average. Matt led the team in fielding, muffing only two opportunities all season. Sandy Smith, the long-ball hitter of the squad, cleared the bases several times with tremendous triples. First baseman Bill French, tail end of the Smith to Barrett to French double-pla combination, often came up with a bingle in a crucial situation. Behind the plate, Co-gaptain Dino Vancini prevented any base pilfering with his deadly peg, while the fine fielding and accurate toss of third-baseman Dave Caley more than once robbed the opposition of a hit. Pitcher-outfielder Dave Long, Roger Benson, and two newcomers who saw a lot of action, sophomores Phil Bernstein and Skip Sykes, rounded out the squad. The team got off to a good start, blanking Wilbraham 3-0 behind the one-hit pitching of lefty Dave Long. In the opening home contest a few days later, Bill Conlin captured his first victory in an 11-1 rout over Taft. The squad then experienced a temporary slump as Williston, Deerfield, and Choate all clipped the Pelican's wings. The Ericksonmen shook off the triple loss and went on to cut down their next five opponents. In the final engagement, however, a rival Kingswood team, winless against Loomis since 1947, took advantage of sloppy fielding to avenge their nine-year nemesis, 4-1. Dave Caley and Dave Long were elected to lead the diamond division for the 1957 season. LUDLOW SENIOR BASEBALL Won 1 Lost 8 Bark Row: Mr. Howard, Desmarais, Gehris, VanDuyne Second Raw: Mueller, F. Facing very strong opposition in several meets, the Loomis track squad, captained by sprinter Tom Walsh, compiled a record of one win 1n four dual meets, a second place in the Triangular, and a third place in the Quadrangular. Loomis was strongest in weights, jumps and hurdles, in which the school gained 28 of its 31 first laces. Dick Atkinson was high scorer for the team with 62 points, Bill Schoonmaker allowed, with a record of 53 points, and Pete Quaintance gained 47 for the season. Captain Walsh led in the sprints with a total of 29, but the Pelicans were de- cidedly weak in running events. In the first meet of the season, the Islanders suffered a disheartening defeat, losing 76-55. Before a Spring Prom crown, the track men gained their only victory as Taft fell, 73-58. In the closest meet of the season, the Fowlesmen lost to Wilbraham, 59M-5716. After gaining second place in the Triangular, Loomis fought a losing battle with Choate, 73-58. The final contest of the season saw Loomis facing Choate, Hotchkiss, and Taft once again. The Pelicans managed to beat only Taft, as the scores were Choate 63, Hotch- kiss 46, Loomis 31, Taft 23. . .qsc l fuss , J il. Memories of what never existed are spewed forth by our leading NEO-lites as we settle in for the last year of our Loomis careers. Graduation comes early for a few of our less fortunate shipmates. Opening assembly features pep-talk by faculty and senior wheels. Mr. Grubbs changes the name of the DIARY to the Dowery, and Sneaky Bud astonishes all by running out of things to say. The unofficial path committee, with an unofficial number of unofficial members hits the ground with an oflicial thud as Swammi's Gestapo techniques prove to be too severe for trembling newcomers. Associates Watson and Sabel are heard mumbling something about reorganizing the KKK. The athletic season seems to be well initiated, however, as we see Frank and Ralph putting their boys through early calisthenics in a seemingly futile attempt to rid them of their perennial content of alcohol. No sooner do the Pelicans spread their wings than Conlin and his Mason-second buddies organize a rival quartet, quintet, sextet, septet, or something called the Orangu- tangs. Involved herein we fine songsters Britton, Nemirow, Zacher, Schenck, and Mac- Lean. This high-class group makes its debut on WLOG to the consternation of Archer and Swammi, who have vainly been attempting to revive the station. The first issue of the LOG awaits us, thanks to Blamb and Phil. After the second and third issues have been released, newcomers are heard asking Is Wry and Ginger a humor column ? Some new editorial writer is turning out stuff that would make anyone's teeth chatter. 4 Having to its name only a little more than a week as far as Loomis is concerned, September quietly hands over rule to October. OCTOBER Autumn leaves continue to drift by the window as the first full month of school begins. Happy Frank House opens the month on a cheery note as he proclaims the glee team on the beam. Old legends are brought back by those who have been around long enough as Headmaster Grubbs announces the long-awaited return of the JOE. Seniors begin to realize that we have some local talent as Newsweek praises the Hum course in an article appropriately entitled Harvest on the Bend. Much is made of the many distinguished authorities who are lending their talents to the course, and certain faculty members are noticed walking more briskly. Ack-Ack leads the gridders to a hard-fought 7-7 draw with rival Suflield, as Dickinson and Hall lead the booters to a happy 3-1 triumph over the little girls from West Hartford. Now Rolly and the Barretts can show their faces around home again. The school hastily prepares for the advent of Big Mike Dorizas. Ramirez gives the old boy a tough time at lunch, and when reminded of his last visit to the Island, Mike can only mutter Uleentalactual agghad, thatz wat. The LOG officially welcomes Moe Brown back from his conquest of the globe, and Loomis's own world correspondent gives a good account of himself in an assembly about Mostly people. Later that week in chapel, Carl calls God a holy terror, and warns that we may wake up one of these days to the smell of burning brimstone. Limey tells all in a LOG scoop. Seems the old boy 'thought the American girl to be a cross between Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe. Rather than reach any hasty conclu- sions, he reveals plans to continue investigation. Hall, Dickinson, Roberts, and goalie Daub shine as booters dump Wilbraham 4-1. The pig-toters fare not so well, however, as they bite the dust 19-13 under a strong Wilbraham attack. Conlin and Ack-Ack pro- vide the drive. Our old friend Van de Velde is spied on campus and an alert reporter discovers that he has sold his infamous car although his wardrobe hasn't changed much. Home-run Barrett goes home with pockets full as his boys sweep the Series. Mac- Lean's astute Dining Hall Committee is not swayed by Navy Norm's bribe of Maroon and Gray plates but continue relentless Crusades against bread pudding. A Bread Pudding committee is organized. Coach, with the assistance ofthe Dance Committee, plans the annual fall caper-this year without Hawkins. The girl, Gifiie insists, is no problem, but I find P.D. some- what more exciting. Flood waters sweep over the Island, but Ralph remains calm and recruits an erstwhile group of seniors to tote what seems to be sixteen tons of Calcium Chloride to high ground while Carl Olson watches the water. The emergency eventually passes, much to the chagrin of the day brigade, who had planned on a two weeks' vacation with pay. Rolly discovers that cows are not strictly a Windsor phenomenon. The autumn leaves are beginning to fall fewer and farther between as November draws near ..... Z LOEIHSDTB vislh'l5R5 auhiigsi-J TIME mN.T0 PLAY BALL , , oowiif' !,,,,,,.- YDSQTOE 1 1 I 1 NOVEMBER For the first few days of the month, a violent battle ensues between the Dance Com- mittees of Oxford and Loomis as both discover they have scheduled their Fall Dance on the same night. After Benjie's threatening epistles to Granny, the girls agree to postpone their dance and VV's Fall Brawl goes ahead as scheduled. In the afternoon, the Promgoers watch the Maroon and Gray gridders amass a two- touchdown lead over Hotchkiss only to lose the contest by a last-half rally, 26-13. Eve sneaks out of the Garden of Paradise to see the game while soft lights, sweet music, and smoke flow from chez Smith where Pete is entertaining a little girl with cold toes. After the Dance, a new check-in system allows an extra half-hour for the dancers, but even then everyone is reluctant to depart. Finally, Rolly, Chassie, and Zach make an attempt to reunite the Orangutangs. The attempt falls through, but at least everyone is driven to bed-to the strains of Row, Row, Row your boat. The same night, the head warden at the Infirmary reports that her sleep was dis- rupted by a couple of councilmen who tiptoed past her door to see Giflie. ' A couple of Chaffee girls disguised as Kent football scouts, probe around the gym trying to get the inside story on Daddy's team and come upon Amos, clad only in an ace bandage. The visit must have injected into the team a serious psychological inadequacy as Kent salts the Pelicans' wings 47-0, in their last game of the season. In a belated Guy Fawkes' day celebration, Frenchie, Limey, Tiny Tim, Rolly, and Sandy depart for a week-end at Williams. The terror of Highway No. 119 proves himself a not particularly skillful navigator, as the car is hung up on a snow-capped mountain in Vermont. Assistant Wrestling coach, joli au lit, accompanies the team to Springfield for a pre- season clinic. His interest in grappling seems not too profound, but he rivals Duncan Hines in his selection of cuisine. The team passes up a six course dinner for 35 cents just to go to a place where they serve Indian Pudding-made with real Indians. DECEMBER Half of December is spent waiting for vacation and doing Hum projects. The night before they are due, certain members stay up all night polishing their masterpieces with loving hands. Joostie is all right in English class until he starts snoring. NEO comes through with The Skin of Our Teeth and gets rave reviews from Brooks Archer. Conlin and MCD show they have other talents in a first-rate performance. Char- lotte makes herself sufiiciently addle-headed, and Jane Fearer enthralls all, especially Limey, who turns poet but as yet to no avail. Schenck and Zacher get a little religion as they attend ye olde fashioned revival at Northfield. The straps and their coaches are duly honored by letters, poetryf?j, singing, and cigars at the athletic banquet as the fall sports teams pick a few stalwarts to lead them. A few characters mourn the death of Chicken a la King. The D.I-I. Committee silences. them by herding them to the lower regions of the kitchen to watch Freddy make the stuff. NESGA-nobody knows what it means, but it has something to do with student councils. About 200 of these youthful campus cops swarm over Loomis for a big conference run by Sandy and Dick Mansfield. There are all kinds of discussion groups and speeches by Bunky Munger and Chassie's uncle. Some pretty nice girls there-no check-in time. Conlin throws a Bacchic Blast to get the vacation rolling. Briscoe brings along some early NESGA arrivals to show them how Loomies make merry-or MCD in the case of the host. Dino and company drive by and find the lights out. Despite Goose's insistence that Dey must be makin' out, they figure that there is no party and drag out. Vacation swings into high as many notables go to Manhattan for refreshments. f, Lv ' .ans-'--a '37 Ji' ., - 4. . ' .3- S-it-s.ys-L! Z7'f.: . ' .. ' Y ,. , l,.uo. Most of his campus duties will be assumed by other masters, but it looks as though his production of The Gondoliersn will have to be postponed. One bright ray shines through the general post-vacation gloom: the new hockey rink will be ready to go in just two more weeks. Also ready in about two more weeks will be Mid-year exams. To celebrate the joyous event, Bowen and Rutledge Caided by Regesteinj somehow manage to hit the airwaves with a revamped version of VVLOG-WFOG. The station offers an interesting assortment of risque comments mixed with rock 'n' roll, and provokes at least faculty sneers. Fialloslreturns to the Island just in time for Mid-month College Boards. Carlos re- ports that a glorious Holiday Season was enjoyed by Grace Kelly and himself. Unfor- tunately, Kelly happened to have been in Monaco while he was in Honduras. Bulletin: the new hockey rink will be ready to go in just two more weeks. O In a startling announcement, Mr. Norris, of Biology fame, comes to the rescue ofthe frustrated campus thespians by offering to direct The Gondoliersf' Both Gilbert and Sullivan turn in their graves but are somewhat reassured by the news that Squirrel has participated in 47 productions. COf just what, few people are quite sure.D Humanities proiects are returned to the ioyf?j of all Seniors, thus adding to the already carefree atmosphere of this Mid-year and CEB examination month. It is some consola- tion, however, to hear that the new hockey rink will be ready to go in just two more weeks. The LOG creates a scandal as Archer pans the Metropole Cafe. Indignant and anony- mous ex-Yalies answer with violent letters, while Ziger yells, Collegiate pseudo-sophistica- tion ! g others say, We want rock 'n' roll. Ramirez boycotts Senior Class Meeting. Mr. Munger's Sunday evening calls to religion draw a large response, but the Sunday morning call to the sea seems stronger. A certain Business Manager feels the salt in his veins and in his new, shiny tractor crashes through the ice in a desperate attempt to go down to the sea in ships. Mid-years come and go, leaving the student body much relieved, and January ends joyously as the new hockey rink, on the verge of completion for nearly two weeks, blows up. ?fSf.??-iiism-if W,-2'?', . -1 i The School is bereaved by the death of its first Headmaster Mr B Although the Class of 56 did not know him personally we all see the imprint which his personality has left upon Loomis, and the heights to which he has raised the school. February arrives and the Council is at . the mercy of the students for a day. The i Loomisites make a good account of them- . - selves as 98fZ, turn out. They even add a few characters like Schenck, Neeme, Zach, Pete, and Graybeal. This makes some changes necessary, proving complicated indeed. Warham buzzes to the sound of clippers and scissors as the Roberts-MacWhinney Barber Shop swings into action. Danziger is one ofthe first to be noticed. The band- ages are off in a week, and his head is as good as new. The two craftsmen improve, however, and charge 35 cents for their services. Nine of the egg-heads are honored as President Butterfield of Wesleyan gives an assembly speech on scholarship and Bert hands out Cum Laude certificates. Our two weeks are finally up and Mr. Hoyt Ammidon dedicates the long-awaited hockey rink. Naturally, it rains buckets and the P.A. system doesn't work. Super Chas accepts the gold hockey stick, however, and proceeds to lead his skaters against the more experienced Westminster squad to go down 8-1. A rather lightly-clad figure skater helps to improve spirits between periods. Jeezy Peezy and Bunky pit their team against tough competition and lose all save honor with a 1-10 record. Chaffee's Winter Prom comes and goes-without Limey. Ack-Ack and California Bill lead the hoopsters to a 9-4 record, dropping three of the contests by one point. Little Mots thrills the fans at intermission with an unusual display of trick shooting. Miss Hall's chanteuses visit the Glee Team for a sing and swing. Joel Cwhy wasn't I born a midgetj trips the light fantastic with the 6'2 beauty. McKey adds to the fun and puts the girls in the mood with his version of the Gombey. MARCH March heralds her approach by heaping a foot of snow on the campus but the undaunted Pelicans manage to shake the white stuff off their wings long enough for a trip to Rosemary Hall. A lone dayboy car arrives nearly an hour before the buses and Bob Hall, Fred Barrett, and Frenchie find themselves in they midst of eighty Rosemary Hall girls. Freddy emerges with someone named Dede Ceven the last name's the same.j Amos practices charity among the less fortunate girls outside while Joel more than makes up for his mistake at Miss Hall's. Smoking is allowed on the long trip home and visibility is zero. The dayboys seem to lose their sense of direction and head towards New York. Most of the precipitation this month seems to be occurring in the form of feathers. Chassie is accused of brooming the ducks too hard, but the real answer to the mystery lies in the deflated pillows of Warham second. Mickey enters a few of the back doors of his own home town for the first time, but profits tangibly from his visits as he discovers that one of his hidden talents lies in the pull of an oar. Geez, what'd you guys do with junior. When it seems that College Boards and Hum projects are the only obstacles to your vacation, a German Measles epidemic arises and seizes a few of us. FOG releases the school two days early but most of us use that time merely fighting our way home through the drifts of an unexpected blizzard. The SNUG trembles under a volley of dick sessions as Rick, Coogie and Del take on the rest of the class armed only with a can of garbage. The Reverend Carl stands atop the stairs with his plea for constructive carefulnesslessf' The Class of '56 proves itself one of the most cosmopolitan classes in Loomis' history. Many head for Florida and 'others for Bermuda where Betty Two weeks and never been kissed Ann is rescued by Lambypie. About halfthe class spends a day or two in New York-in the same hotel room. Roly and Chassie claim the only two beds since they got there Hrst. Sandy's Hag is at half mast when Velma turns down his bid for the Prom. Matt and Dino obey the Moon's early summons to the diamond but, back in Hartford, Chunky's charges find the field blanketed with snow. APRIL The April sun rises and so do the Batch and VVarham boysg they find Brit when the snow melts, where Alvordski and Reg had tossed him a week ago . . . on the way to a shower. Rock'n roll blares across the campus, and we begin to hear of vacation tales: Frenchie and Tiny Tim living on stewed grapefruit Csoaked in rotgutl . . . Pemi living on fifteen cents a day . . . fall dis down dayuh in deep Dixiej . . . Horace living? . . . Burnham and Barrett spending three weeks of dissipated bliss. Quarters, the worst thing that has happened to this class. Atom-smasher Carter mixes his masterpiece up with George's and Zacher's hackers are asked to recreate the pragmatic evolution of the helium atom . . . while Hodson crawls out of the PD exam muttering something about the covalency of atomized individuals. Freud-man and Zaa- zaabel wreck the Math scale as usual. The cry of despair arose: It won't be too bad if they count Hum . . . It was bad. 1' Dino, Bill, Matt, and Briscoe lead the boys against Wilbraham for a 3-0 shutout, then go on to maul Taft 11-1. Meanwhile Gif, Hub, and John keep the racketeers hot as they whip Wilbraham and the Springfield Frosh. The track team wonders as they Hnd empty flasks scattered on the bus floor, and then wonder no more as their jolly driver tries to shove a six-foot wide bus through a five-foot wide Hotchkiss gate. Peter Q, Rub- a-dub Daub, Bench-Stcnch, and Dirk are led by Pemi to rack up many points in the running events, while Fox, Rick, and Ack-Ack dominate the muscle-men. But the Lakeville men wound up with more points than we. JAW becomes the BMOC, no flash-in-the-pan either. He gets sent to the shower for the sixth'time, Hum class being his latest. Then the news hits: Iohn is going to the prom . . . with two dates . . . for the same night. Dorm meetings come and go and so do a few of our shipmates-the work-your-way out plan is originated. Then comes the other sex, first by ones and twos, then in swarms all over the Island. The class takes up a donation to buy snowshoes for Chass, Horny, and Hoppy. MacWhinney is impressed with the tremendous applause greeting his Pelican solo . . . until he realizes that it was thunder. Conlin's date is scared and throws her arms around him: I like it, I like it. The Orangutangs collect their thirteen cents, three wads of gum and some indignant advice from Julie and the other birds. McKey and his Gombey boys raise the fervor of the dance to an even higher pitch . . . somehow it is the best prom anyone remembers. ' Next morning Roly and Fred about five o'clock burst into the quad looking for a drunken cow. They find instead some Sophomores industriously painting Wheel Walk: their suspicions are allayed when they are told the fellows are only painting the speed limit: Go SS. O As April fades out, we begin the old routine of running to the mailboxes three times a day. ' MAY As blissful memories of the events of last week slip away, May thunders in with torrential, downpours that threaten to carry away the Island. The dayboys are dis- appointed as the road remains in view and life goes on as dull as before. r Limey goes wild as the Oval is the scene of a Rugby game between Harvard and Yale and he offers several criticisms of the watered-down, American form of rugby- Don't keep the ball, you fool, run with it. A Yale alumnus who recently ran afoul of the law also has a field day-in the big tent. Squirrel rehearses the Gondoliers and Gilbert and Sullivan triumph again as the cast, headed by julie and Charlie Fidlar, romps through Barataria. Chaffee Spring Day attracts the P.D. addicts, inspired by the thought of dancing 'round a Maypole. The Darwin Club Carnival is the scene of The Great Cake Robbery as Rico, Meat- ball, and Slippery take advantage of the darkness to pilfer the cake from under the eyebrows of a ranting advisor. Conlin's trip to California is financed by many generous seniors who sacrified their study time for a little blackjack in the smoking room. ' Reg, Mole, Weed, and Bilge get honorable mention for a valiant effort. The recent volley of Snug battles culminates in all-out war. The final fight reaches a Crescendo as everyone hurls cups, plates, weiss, pies, and soda bottles-at Ziger. Flying cushions and chairs and general chaos betray a need for a sheriff in Smitty's saloon. Mr. Munger answers the description. An outdoor campus battle ensues the same night which would seem to rival the extra- vaganzas of Cecile B. DeMille. The attack is nearly foiled, however, as Warham second is discovered filling water bombs during study hall. A cast of thousands clash in mortal combat on the path and water-filled balloons drench the campus and several teachers seeking to quell the outburst. Memorial Day affords a lot of study time which very few of us take advantage of. Exams come, and, unprepared comme d'habitude, we are whisked into the midst of them . . . l l --.N al n ' '- A R V fa-:.., ' x X 1 my. v 1-n T?
