Participating in concerts with several girls' schools, St. Margaret's, Macliufiie, and VVestover, the Glee Club also sang with the Chaffee Glee Club at the Christmas presentation of the York Nativityn in the Loomis Chapel. The Club took part in the Twenty-First Annual Preparatory Schools' Music Festival with the singers of Choate, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, and Taft at the Bushnell Memorial. Later it sang at the First Annual Spring Choral Festival, also at Bushnell, with the singing groups of nine boys' preparatory schools and six girls' schools. The feature of the concert was The Creation by Haydn. ln March the voices of sixteen members of the Glee Club were in the chorus of the Mikado, ln the traditional manner the club closed the year by combining with Chaffee to sing at Commencement. Chairman Mr. Bridgman ,,,,,..... .,., . . ...,.,. ,. ....,. , . . , . ,. . . . fidvixer With the belief that Loomis is a community within communities and therefore has important responsibilities, Junto once again appealed to the students for funds. This year the eight-member committee distributed over 81,600 among nineteen local, national, and international charitable institutions. ln allocatin its funds unto ave some reference to or anizations that assist oun D 8 3 , P S , Y 8 people, especially students. Thus contributions were sent to the March of Dimes, the American Farm School in Greece, andthe World University Fund. But the committee tried not to overlook local responsibilities nor the needs of the more destitute areas of the world. Donations were made to the Hartford Community Chest and the Connecticut Junior Re ublic in Litchfield as well as to CARE and the American Friends Service Committee. P The junto committee this year attempted to give the activities of the fund a more intimate association with school life. The fund raising drive was held in january rather than during the summer vacation as had been the practice. Talks in chapel and assembly, posters, the publishing of a complete financial statement, and articles in the Log were all used to keep the student body informed. r DRAMATICS The York Nativity which for almost a decade has been a Christmas time tradition at Loomis was the First dramatic effort of the year. The ancient pageant was presented in the quiet half-light of the school chapel on a Sunday evening in December. A chorus of Loomis and Chaffee students directed by Mr. House and Mrs. Norris sang from the chapel balcony. Mr. Orchard directed the acting, Alan Print read customary scriptural passages, and Gay Hartnett and Priscilla Thrall from Chaffee portrayed Mary and the visiting angel. john Church took the part of the aged Joseph. Wrathful King' Herod was played by Marty Clayman. His entourage included Chris Cooney and Bill livenson as advisors, David VVhitney as the princeling, and Bill Hedeman and Carl LaFleur. The pilgrim shepherds and kings were played by Jim Kelley, Charles McCarthy, Leonard Perfido, Don Fuhtmann, Ted Smith, and Jim Loomis. ' In March the school shouted the Japanese equivalent for Hear! Hear! Hear! while the Loomis-Chaffee players presented Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado- the fiftieth production since the construction of the school theater in 1938. The complexities of court life in Titipu were delightfully revealed by jim Loomis as Pish-Tush, Stu White as the fearsome Lord High Pixecutionet, and Alan Print as The Lord High Everything Flse with family pride inconceivable. A none too oriental love affair ensued between Ted Smith as the wondering minstrel Nanki-Poo and Mary Ann Handley who sang the part of Yum- Yum with great charm. Miss Handley together with Judy W'erts and Judy Bartholomew formed a very lovely trio of little maids from school. The plot thickenediwhen the Hery Katish appeared on stage well played by Gay Hartnett. But all turned out well when Don Fuhrmann as the Mikado made his object all sublime eloquently clear. The chorus of dozens was directed by Mr. House and Mrs. Norris, and the musical accompaniment was skillfully provided by Mr. Aaron Pratt and John Paoletti. Mr. Orchardis final production of the year was Eugene O'Neill's study in fear, The Emperor Yones. Marty Clayman in the title role did a first-rate job portraying a man as he loses all dignity to fear. ln a vast dark forest, with the ominous background of an un- relenting drum beat, silent visions present themselves to the deposed emperor: a train porter played by jim Loomis, a prison guard played by Ted Smith, a witch-doctor played by Chris Gentry. Alan Print gave a fine performance as the derelict cockney trader, Smithers. As always, the problems of stage setting were handled witlmnear-professional finesse by the Stage Hands Union led by Carter Elwood and advised by Mr. jones. 6 f JI! Although Captain Bill Hedeman was able to play only two full games because of injury, he led the team in individual scoring with a total of 33 points. Archie Peck came next with 18, followed by Dave Bates and Carl Lalfleur with 12 each. Fred Davidson rounded out the scoring by tallying 6 points. Loomis started out with an impressive 20746 victory over Suffield as Archie Peck intercepted a pass and dashed 60 yards for the score behind fine blocking. With a seven game winning streak on the line, the Pelicans suffered defeat at the hands of a strong VVilliston eleven, 27 76. Returning home the following Saturday, the team bounced back to defeat Cranwell 201-7. Featured in this game was a long scoring pass thrown by Dick Case and carried the rest of the wav by Carl LaFleur. Another highlight of the game was a spectacular weaving run by Archie Peck. Riddled with injuries, the team lost to an enlivened liaft eleven 18e7. An undefeated Kent team regained the cherished Silver Spoon by crushing a deter- mined but outclassed Loomis squad 34-7. The season ended on a joyous note with an impressive 21-0 victory over Hotchkiss before an enthralled Prom weekend crowd. Steve Margolis led an outstanding line composed of Howard, Auchincloss, Hudson, and Lawrence. The sparkling backfield of Case, Peck, Hedeman, Atkinson, and Davidson was by far the greatest single asset of the team. The outlook for next vear is bright, with a hard nucleus of Steve Margolis and Howie Hudson in the line, and the impressive quartet of Atkinson, Davidson, Hallas, and Britton composing the backfield. The fighting spirit of the 1953 F.ricksonmen was always present, and never, regard- less of the score, did it fade or die. Coached by Messers. Edward Flaccus and Frank House, the booters won impressively in their initial game over arch-rival Kingswood 3-l. After a heart-breaking ISO defeat at the hands of Wilbraham, the Islanders snapped back to overpower Kent and VVilliston 6-I and 34 respectively, to keep their rooters buzzing. Sophomore Tommy Dickinson bagged three oals against Kingswood and wound up high scorer on the team for the season with tive taTlies. Practically the whole team got into the scoring spree against Kent as Dickinson, co-captain-elect Brendan Shea, Pete Strong, Lee Hausser, Al Gutt, and Captain Dave Stainton found the range. junior Rick Roberts, Strong, and Hausser carried the offensive load against VVilbraham, while the invaluable defensive work of Norm Blair and Bill Lud- ington, fullbacks, and Bob Cowles, halfback, had much to do with the victorv. Hard luck seemed to strike the team after this fine start, as they dropped two in a row to Deerfield and Taft, and, after triumphing over Hotchkiss, lost the last game of the season to Choate, 3-1. The Deerfield loss was no disgrace, however. Loomis outfought the powerful green combine, but just couldn't get the spark they needed to pull out a victory. The Fine, dependable play of co-captain-elect Tom Richardson, Bob Spitzler, and goalie Carter Elwood, who turned in some fine performances, deserves mention. Along with co-captains-elect Shea, who placed second in scoring with three goals, and Richardson, sophomores Cowles and Dickinson, and Blair, Roberts, and Gutt are returning to form a strong nucleus for next year's team. In the opener a strong Taft quintet bowed to the Pelicans in the final seconds at Loomis, 62-61, as Hedeman caged a spectacular 28 points. Still on their home court, the red-hot hoopsters routed Choate 61-47, as Juniors John Rusher and john Wallace coupled with Hedeman to lead the scoring punch. Next Saturday, January 16, the cagers dropped their first contest at Suffield, 75-71. Hedeman turned in a 26 point scoring effort in the losing cause. Rusher, Schneider, and Dick Atkinson powered the Loomis attack the follow- ing Wednesday as the team bounded back into the winning column, nipping Wilbraham 62-61 at Loomis. The following Saturday, Schneider and Hedeman went wild with 27 and 20 points respectively, as the Islanders racked up number four against Pomfret, 71-54. A two and a half hour trip to Cranwell went in vain as Loomis took a 65-53 beating. The next game with Deerfield the following Saturday night was the game of the season, as two foul shots by Hedeman in the last seconds of the first overtime, after Bill Ludington deadlocked the fray with no time left in the regulating game, gave Loomis a hard-fought 90-88 triumph. Schneiderls brilliant 28 point effort speaks for itself. Williston and Westminster suc- cumbed 47-31 and 82-51 respectively, and the Pelicans evened matters with Suffield, 6IP57 on the Loomis Hoor. St. Thomas was the next victim, falling 61-54, but the next game the Maroon and Gray ran into a stone wall in their return match against Wilbraham, losing 65-45. In the season finale the Islanders downed Mt. I-Iermon 65-56. Hedeman, Ludington, and Schnei- der, all playing their last game for Loomis, led the scoring. With co-captains john Wallace and Dick Atkinson, letter-men John Rusher and Brendan Shea, Gif? Hopkins and Pete Maynard returning, next year's team should fare very well. To climax the season three seniors, Tom Burns, Pete Howard, and Dave Stainton, won championships at the New England Interscholastic Tourney in Boston as the team placed second in a field of 22. The Maroon opened the season with four straight wins over the Springfield Boys' Club 27-10, Kent 18-14, the Coast Guard J.V.'s 24-18, and Taft 22f12. The following week came the only loss of the season to the Harvard Freshmen. After the 18-18 tie with Choate, the team returned to form as it downed a previously undefeated Wooster team 23414. In the seasonls finale Mt. Hermon was completely overwhelmed 27-5. Individually Co-Captains Howard and Stainton led the team, each being undefeated in eight bouts. Also each made a perfect 40 out of a possible 40 points as they scored falls in all their bouts. At the New England Tourne Pete Howard was voted the most outstanding wrestler by the coaches and awarded the john A. Carson Trophy. Close behind Howard and Stainton came two other seniors, Don Fuhrmann and Jim Loomis. Don Fuhrmann, in his second year of wrestling but his first varsity year, had a record of six wins and one defeat. Jim Loomis had a five and two record for seven bouts. The lower weights held down by Tom Spooner, Earl Sandstrom, Connie Brevillier, and Tom Burns, were limited by a lack of experience. In the heavyweight class Fred Mayer fought gamely but was often outweighed by 30 to 40 pounds. Prospects for next year look good with the return of Sandstrom and Brevillier, and Paul Lamont, Tim Thrall, Fred Davidson, and Paul Reichert from the j.V, squad, which lost only one meet while winning six. A shoddy defense, coupled with an undependableiittin attack, pla fued the team. Pete Maynard and Brendan Shea handled the pitching admiraily, and witii a little more support might have been more successful. The team traveled to Wilbraham for the opening game. Shea allowed only one hit, but was the victim of three unearned runs, and lost 3fZ. Taft was easily beaten in the following contest 6+3, as shortstop and Captain Bill Ludington had two hits and drove in three runs. Pete Maynard dropped a heartbreaker to Deerfield on Prom weekend when his defense collapsed behind him. Case made two spectacular catches in center field. Choate succumbed to a strong Loomis hitting attack on the following VVednesday with Hedeman leading the offensive. Sophomore Bill Conlin showed promise by shutting out Westminster 441, in his first start. The team fell into a hitting slump as we dropped successive games to Hotchkiss and Kent. Sophomore Catcher Dino Vancini made his first hit of the season, a timely one, as he drove in two runs to beat Suffield 342 in the last of the ninth. The Erickson men fell apart and lost to a powerful Hopkins Grammar ll-2. The following two weeks saw the team at its best, as it rolled over Suffield, Gunnery, and traditional rival Kingswood in the season's finale. Bill Hedeman led the team in batting with a potent .370, followed by co-captains- elect Dave Britton and Pete Maynard. Lack of depth and formidable distance runners hurt the team's chances for a winning season. In the opening meet of the season, the cindermen journeyed to Lakeville, where they dropped a 75-56 decision to Hotchkiss. The following week, the team edged Taft by one- third of a point before the Spring Promgoers. The team whipped VVilbraham 69M-47M to continue their winning ways, but trailed both Deerfield and Williston in the Triangular at Northampton. The surprise meet of the season was with Choate. The maroons were in contention throughout the meet. Undefeated and highly-favored Choate rallied to take the last event, the 880 relay, and the meet 67-64. Loomis placed second to Choate in the annual pentagonal in the last meet of the season. By far the outstanding performer of the season was Captain Pat Healy, who captured a total of SOM points in the high jump, broad jump, and pole vault. Pat set a new pen- tagonal record for the pole vault, clearing eleven feet, ten inches, just two inches short of the school record. Prospects are indeed bright for next year with lettermen Reinhart, Plank, and Lee returning in the dashes, Schoonmaker and Margolis in the weights, and Healy, Langbehn, and Gutt in the jumping events. On Al's first night in the school, Charlie Pratt shoves a tray in his hand and tells him he's waiting table until Thanksgiving. The First meeting of the political club turns out to be a real blast. Bohemian Ben Sonnenberg stages the first walkout of the year after his pal, Comrade Cooney, makes an unsuccessful attempt to seize the presidency left vacant by the departure of our friend Kraemer. I,ater in the same session, Bridgie rocks Palmer with the news that he has read Kinsey and is ready and willing to lead a discussion on it. Oh you ole beavaln becomes the mating cry of the Dayboy car-pools as they roar to school every morning. Case, Collins, Lard, and Strong keep their eyes peeled for girls on the Dayboy speedway, while Sidda and Tooie man the horn. The subversive Senior path committee mobilizes under the diabolic leadership of Paul, ful got six witnesses who saw you D Lutes. They move quickly to apply the shaft to unknowing underclassmen who challenge the supremacy of seniors on their beloved super highway. Freddy the cook is sought as committee adviser, but he declines the honor. Fifty candidates answer the war-whoop of the Great White lfather. Tiny George Auchincloss, at a puny 255 and Dino Vancini at a muscle-bound 10311 are outstanding among the aspirants. Team morale is exceptionally high with the hope of duplicating last year's spotless record. Nearly everyone agrees that the most casual man on campus this Fall is the illustrious exchange teacher from Saudi Arabia ...i A lly Khan Po. We plunge into October with the music of the beloved Humanities ringing in our ears. l ,Q f 1 ar Qi.. OCTOBER The month starts on an ominous note with censorship difficulties plaguing the new Log Board. The Editors are surprised to learn that the paper is closely read throughout the East in general and Cape Cod in particular. Little Known Facts becomes the most dangerous occupation on the Island as .The Chink and Fliplip bite the dust on successive weekends. The Lord of Batch third is vindicated. Nearly the whole student body is on hand to witness the lirst football game of the year. Captain Bill Hedeman and Archie Peck lead a spirited Maroon and Gray team to an impressive victory over SuHield. The usual boredom and tranquility of Saturday night detention is shattered in a pleasant and highly amusing manner with the arrival in study hall of a local pizza-pusher. Proctor Houghton quells the riot and rules that Mercy must wait until the end of de- tention to eat his pizza. Nights in the snug are anything but peaceful, however, as a stormy series of events leads to a temporary shut down. It starts innocently enough with an evening of dime-pie fights and road races on Molly's bicycle. During the following session Cooney and Shirk delight the onlookers with a spirited if a little noisy recreation on the bottle-breaking scene from From Here To Eternity. The fervor of the snug patrons is not fully known until the following night, however, when a casual visit from the faculty is interpreted as a sly plan to seize control of the cash register. Mr. Houghton is forced to put a halt to the ensuing riot and two nights abstinence discourages early repetition of festivities. First marking period grades are announced with the usual amount of moans, gripes, and suicides. The Hflunking five of English 4g look on very enviously as Frenchman Louis Marchand cracks the marking period test on his first day in class. Limey Lay ex- plains the large numbers of failures with the statement, WE must leave room for im- provementf' The whole school cheers as Wilkes and Spitzler belt the Big E's tough Eco- nomics 3s course for A's. Work is begun on the addition to the theater and the rumor is immediately circulated that freshmen are being buried alive in the concrete foundation. The breaking of the first patch of earth is done by NEO in elaborate ceremonies. The event, though very im- pressive, is very paradoxical in view of the English Department's well-known abhorrence for shoveling jobs. Towards the end of the month, the sleeping seven who have been dozing in the balcony during Thursday assemblies are rudely awakened. Five fiery minutes provide small talk for a long time. Three busloads of Loomisites journey to the Ethel Walker School for a Hallowe'en dance and some good food. As a result the historic Hallowe'en Night Patrol is abandoned. What will desperate seniors use now for something to send to colleges as activities? As the month draws to a close there is a feeling of eagerness in the air, a tone of ex- pectation. Shrewd observers can spot the hand-writing on the wall . . . Two weeks 'till senior weed! NOVEMBER Just about this time the seniors begin to realize that they can't all come back for a P. G. course next year. Sugar Jim faces the task of getting a class of seventy-five into college. The FOG calls a pow-wow after lunch one day and announces that with present marks just about half the class will graduate. Jarvis insists that he's just blufling, but to the majority of seniors the cold truth just doesn't bounce. The new system of quarter exams fails to fool the veterans of the previous work orgies. They are quick to realize that the only difference in the dreaded tests is that now we are given fifty minutes to complete a two hour exam. The morale rises from the murky depths to a high pitch of expectancy as the long- awaited Fall Prom approaches. Archie Peck sounds the only dismal note with the tearful announcement that his plans to bring a married girl to the dance have fallen through. It seems she couldn't Hnd a babysitter. Even this tragic news fails to dampen the spirits of the Island as the blessed day finally arrives. The football team is equal to the occasion as they batter Hotchkiss by the score of 20-O. The Townesmen play some fine dance music but frustrate the many jazz fans in the audience by their stubborn refusal to play the Saints. Aaron Pratt feels somewhat vindicated. Sqeeb proves himself once more to be an ace birddog as he begins the weekend with one date and ends with another. The usual post-prom letdown is strategically averted by the gala opening of the senior smoking society. Underclassmen have to be dragged from the east end of the dining room as smoke billows out into the quadrangle. Leo Graywacz turns down an invitation to light up the first weed but, Ted Smith, the Stamford Smokestack, proves an able substi- tute. It now becomes a contest to see who can get through his meal and sprint the length of the dining hall the fastest. The Gent claims a new all time record, turning in the excellent time of 9 Hat. Several prominent members of the class are, however, conspicuous by their absence, including John It's twice as much fun on the sly Shirk. The LOG is out with another great scoop, this time heralding the formation of the local Hi Fi sect. Rieger, Matthews, and Sargent prove to be extraordinarily big wheels by spinning classical discs in 3D. Comments on the club vary from adviser Tom's, This makes for weighty listening, to Steve Levine's, These guys are all just a bunch of thugs . . . there's no doubt about it. Courtesy of Look Magazine DECEMBER Seniors are still able to exercise the highly-prized prerogative of walking on their own freeway as the short month passes without a single storm. There are some underclassmen, however, who are still trying to share the privilege. Their efforts are all in vain since Lutes' gestapo is scruple-less in dealing with any fanatics who challenge the path. As we reach the one-third marker, two are missing from the field of 76 that went to the post in September. Gone but not forgotten is the casual king of Taylor second. Freddie Mayer is desperately in need of a lawyer as a book of the month club sets their legal machinery in motion against him. He has visions of spending his vacation in court on a breach of promise suit. The York Nativityu is once more the dramatic effort for December. John Church is excellent as Joseph, but it is Marty Clayman's demon-like portrayal of Herod that highlights the Chaffee-Loomis production. The fall athletic banquet closes the term and with all ears full of Charlie Pratt's famous poetry and several notices from the EH telling us that we are overdrawn, we speed towards three glorious weeks on the Uoutsidef' JANUARY First of all I want to welcome you all back, study hall tonight at seven, bed for all at ten, breakfast tomorrow at six, Happy New Year! With these cordial words of greet- ing, we settled back, resigning ourselves to our fate, hoping fond memories of our vacation would carry through the cold winter ahead. Tales of the recent vacation highlighted the early days of the month. They ranged from Martin and Strong's lurid account of 'Awild orgies in Beaver Country to the less gruesome details of l.uddy's New Yearls live party. The latter was really something to behold. johnny Shirk said he had a splitting headache when he got there but in just one hour lVas feeling no pain whatsoever. l,ee Hausser and -lim l,oomis made a valiant attempt to be the life of the party by producing a picturesque Chinese gong at the hour of midnight, but unfortunately their entrance was poorly timed. The evening ended on a melodious note, with a pleasing rendition of Yes, We have no Bananasn offered by Steve l.evine and the host Con and beneath the piano, respectivelyl. This month is always a grim one for seniors with the dreaded College Board exams, closely followed by midyears. lt's the time of last minute decisions over college choices. ln addition to our usual selections we began to forward applications to Smith, lVellesley, Vassar, and even to the Hartford Academy of Hairdressing. Steve johnes was spectacular: applying to fourteen colleges headed by Rice, Baylor, and Texas Christian. The affable 'flollum Ollumn of Batch third was the recipient ofa great deal of sym- pathy of questionable justification because of an injury received at the hockey pond. ln his opinion, the injury was the result of poor skating conditions, but more reliable sources reported that he fell in a most amusing manner while attempting to impress several fresh- men with his skill on the ice. The Maroon Hoopsters, with Captain Bill Hedeman and Sweet-apple Schneider showing the way, opened the season with a thrilling victory over Taft. Throughout the month the team played successful and highly exciting basketball, as every VVednesday and Saturday afternoon found the gymnasium full of enthusiastic if not hysterical rooters. 4, M, ,,,-M htm AK Q44' -tf4,.J.L.. .545 lurtesy of Look Magazine Courtesy of Look Magazine Groundhog's Day . . . Wheeeee . . . The Dayboys, apparently discontent with the tranquility of school life, chose a snowy evening late in the month for their annual mid-winter marathon. It started innocently enough with the friendly exchange of a few snowballs behind the powerhouse. One thing led to another, to coin a cliche, and they soon found themselves in a full scale war at a Bloomfield intersection. With Mapes and Hollister providing brilliant military strate gy! the seniors soon obliterated the underclassmen in murderous Crossfire. A jubilant victory celebration was necessarily cut short, however, by the arrival of the entire local police force. The dayboys cheerfully signed the guest book and went home for supper. l i E FEBRUARY Well at last it's here. Burks and Huckans lead a wild celebration attended by all the local Darwinians. It's the one time during the year when they can really get excited . . . Gentry and all the boys on Taylor second think they must be seeing things . . . Wow! dig that crrazy Zebra! Hedeman and La Flower have an interesting encounter with the Massachusetts cops. Bill says they never would have caught him if he'd been in his own car. The judge isn't at all impressed when Bill tells him he is captain of basketball . . . must have been a hockey fan. Roach and Mayer pass their NROTC physicals with flying colors, but some others aren't quite as fortunate. Barbour moans about the stiff requirements, says they'd turn you down if you had a mole on your CENSORED. Oh, before I forget, Spike Marlin and Richard Woodworth Arms, Jr., each gave me a quarter to mention their names here. Lutes has come up with another money-making racket. Says the odds are 12 to 5 that the stork won't hit Taylor before May. Only time will tell . . . The Chaffee Prom comes and goes with hardly anybody noticing it. Jarvis, Luddy and Loomis head the local contingent. Ted Smith, who is a cinch for Class Cutie, is con- spicuously absent. The I-Ioopsters top Deerfield in a real squeaker, 90-88, as Duke nets 28. The TIMF current events test arrives again. Carter You won't understand this but Al would Elwood tallies an 81 to top the class. Church and Cluthe had a neat system all figured out. Both hit in the high twenties. Seniors acquire an intimate knowledge of Susie in the course of Humanities . Actually what this all boils down to is the question of the vertical relationships. Cooney scofifs from the back row but Lutes is all ears down front, saying This beats the flying Buttress anydayf' The last day of February ends in peculiar fashion with the arrival of the first day of March. Oh well, this year has been odd since the start. The school was saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. B., the first lady of the Island for twenty-eight years. Although the class of 1954 did not know Mrs. B., we are all aware of the large part she played through her personality and through her artistic skill in making Loomis an outstanding school. MARCH Cecil B. DeNFO sounds a japanese gong and unveils his latest production, Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado Ted Smith and Don Fuhrmann head the cast but Al Foot Print is the Show-stopper. It was quite a thrill to hear a Japanese Lord speaking with a Cockney accent. The large number of Chaffee girls in the female chorus attracted an equally large number of would-be male thespians. Tom Bailey and Dave Bates stood around and tried their best to look Oriental. CEver seen a 6'3 jap?j The weather becomes very warm and in spring the Moon's fancy lightly turns to baseball. This year he's desperate for a pitcher so he orders everyone with two arms and a glove to pre-season practice. I'Ie's thinking of using Meatball Case and High-Low- Jack Mazzanovitch so you get some idea of just how desperate he is. With two-thirds of our last CPD year behind us we departed for our spring vacation. The day of departure being in honor of Saint Patrick, it was only Fitting that we imme- diately and eagerly sought out one of Irish brethren . . . James Ryan by name . . . ,z 1 X 5 Y- .. X! W'3laKQr.1wv-msf-, ' fw.nQwqLf1f' K Special Spring Sports evolves as the latest attempt to beat the system. Seniors, under the pretense of playing that rugged game of volleyball, are observed in varying degrees of nudity participating in ancient sun-worshipping rites. W'ith Dick Call me if you need a fourthn jones as overseer, this could easily become an official sport with uniforms, school letters, and bridge games away from the lsland. Fair weather brings the latest in Spring attire out of the closets and into the quad. Cords and bucks again predominate. Jarvis establishes a unique precedent, sporting a pair of pants that ANY Good Humor man would be proud to own. A more radical trend is seen in The Wild Ones, Anderson and Vaughn, nattily attired in double-breasted black leather jackets and pegged khakis. April also brings that widely heralded innovation, third-quarter exams. VVhat they really amount to is the same old two hour exams with a new twist designed to encourage speed:-You do 'em in an hour. lronically enough, many seniors maintain an air of nonchalance. A good percentage of class opinion was expressed in Stainton's straight- forward, if not inspiring, It's wonderful. I never dreamed l could Hunk a test so fast. The baseball and track teams make unsuccessfuldebuts, but victories later in the month bolster hopes for winning seasons. The tennis team remains undefeated throughout the month, with Tommy'Richardson and 'Steve Hlt feels great to be a Strap Levine showing the way. y Any summary of this month would be incomplete if we failed to note and comment upon the new sound which echoed across the quad during so many fifth periods ..... . . DOOONNNNNNNNG haw, haw, haw .... MAY Loomis's answer to the May Day riots in Moscow and East Berlin arrives in the form ofthe eagerly-awaited Spring Prom. A few last-minute date problems fails to dampen our spirits. Poor Chiselhead is frantic. Seems his date had a chance to play against the Globetrotters that she just couldn't afford to pass up Cpolitics, you knowl. Church and Dryfoos try Eve calls before deciding to take each other. The LOG has a cheery little Hi for all the nice promgoers. Spitzler dons his dark glasses, Loomis shines up his coun- cil pin, and Bill Hedeman blushes and admits he hasn't got a date. Lester Lanin and the Trinity Pipes provide the musical touch. Al Gutt and Mr. Campeau prove most nimble on the dance floor while Shirk and Cluthe pace the winter track set. john Bancroft hops over the border from Canada, where he is an English exchange student, to sing the praises of socialism to the political club. Dick The Freedom ofthe Press scoffs at his oratory while Carter Just can't understand his bidding. Poor John added insult to injury by Knocking Marilyn Monroe in a Log interview. Rod Johnstone and Bob Ziesmer bring further credit to the school by copping first place in the Interscholastic Sailing Regatta. It was reported that the president and advisor of the Nautical Club capsized and had to abandon ship early in the race. Since this is probably just one of those vicious rumors, we wouldn't think of using their names here without express permission from Gary and Sandy. Those wonderful, ever-alert Log editors report that there are some 53 little tots on the Island. Wheeeee. Such established institutions as little known factsl' and the Log pull are attacked from the pulpit. They just aren't funny, that's allg just not funny. Lutes's ears are burning. ' The Humanites course runs out of speakers and the last assignment is given. Mr. Allenby is seen Crying in the Chapel Csmall jokej. Arch-rival Kingswood is trounced in baseball for the seventh straight year, thus ending the month on the sweetest note possible. JUNE The month we have been awaiting for four Cfive?D years is suddenly, too suddenly, upon us. The shortest month ofthe school year. So many memories for such a short time . . walking to lunch on the sun-drenched path . . . going swimming . . . moving bleachers . . . outdoor classes . . late projects . . . studying . . .
