This group has contributed much to the school since its forma- tion, including the construction of Sellers Field and the Loomis Theatre. The Funds source of revenue is the Snug located in the basement of Palmer Hall. The Snug is an ice cream and snack bar run by its elected members for the benefit of the students. This year, Seniors were again granted permission to smoke in the Snug after lunch and supper. During the spring, the Snug was completely redecorated. The walls were painted a light cream-yellow and green leatherette was used to reupholster the seats. Last year the Fund donated its profits to purchase steel curbing for the Cinder track around the football field. The use of this year s profits is still undetermined, but a new school station wagon has been mentioned. At this concert the Loomis club sang several of its own selections, and also joined the other groups for com- bined numbers The Pelicans, the Loomis octet, had a very successful year also, singing under the direction of Mr. Frank House. Besides participating in almost all of the Glee Club s rograms, the Pelicans were host in March at a gathering of prep school octets in the mis gymnasium. Appearing as uests of the prep schools- which included Choate, Taft, Kent, and Hotchkiss - were the famous Yale Wiffenpoofs, an organization of which Mr. House was formerly a member. The 1951-'52 school year also saw the birth of three new Loomis musical groups: the Loomistakes, Sophomorons, and Freshmaniacs. These organizations, which are all similar to the Pelicans, consist of members of the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes, respectively. Through the early years of Loomis, Junto's functions changed to become the organization through which the school contributes its support to many charities as well as to benevolent institutions. The Committee consists of several boys, elected by the student body, and its faculty adviser, Mr. Bridgman. Junto raises its money through a school-wide drive each fall, at which time, the Committee urges, all students donate what they can from their own earnings. With the average contribution being 87.50 this year, the Com- mittee collected a total of over S2,000. Besides contributing generous sums to all of the well-known charities, such as the Red Cross, Cancer Drive, Heart Fund and many other national drives, Junto concentrated primarily this year in giving to local charities of which the Community Chest received the most, to various institutions which help people of our own age in this country and abroad, and to numerous other small charities. The Junto Committee is always ready and able to endorse any worthy organization or appeal that may come along. One of Junto's objectives in recent years is to make all Loomis students more familiar with the functions and purposes ofjunto. DRAMATICS Two comic fantasies, a Shakespearean tragedy, and a Christmas play were the dramatic pioductions of Loomis and Chaffee during the 1951-'52 school year. Directed by Mr. orris Orchard, the four presentations made full use of the broadcasting opportunities present in the combined enrollment of the two schools, and each play - whether staged in the theatre, chapel, or gymnasium - was received by enthusiastic audiences. The fall play, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, was presented in the gymnasium, with the audience seated around the stage and the actors and actresses dressed in modern clothing. Despite the problems that the in-the-round staging presented for the Stage- hands Union, the rather experimental set-up produced an effective atmosphere, and the production was quite successful, judging by audience reaction and attendance. Ken Hart- man played the title role in the drama, and was assisted by Bob Malsaughlin as Brutus, Pete deBaun as Cassius, and Jack Spooner as Mark Antony. The York Nativity, a Christmas pageant arranged by John Baird from six plays of the York Miracle Cycle, was produced by Mr. Orchard in the chapel just before Christmas vacation. Performed twice -once for students and once for parents and friends of the school - the play had Reggie Greene in the leading role of Joseph and Jane Britton, of Chaffee, as Mary. Sheila Owen, of Chaffee, played the title role in the winter play, Jean Giradoux's fantasy, The Madwoman of Chaillor, which was presented in the theatre for three evenings in February. The plot of this comedy, which enjoyed a successful run on Broad- way in 1948, involves the conflict between evil and good: evil as symbolized by a group of unethical businessmen who want to get at the oil which they know lies beneath Paris, and good as represented by the Madwoman and her followers, who want to restorejoie de vivrf to the fellow Parisians. Prominent in the cast, along with Sheila, were Jack Spooner as the ragpicketg Bob McLaughlin as the President, leader of the shady-dealing businessmen, Pete Viles-a rather excitable stock broker, and Ken Hartman-an inspired if somewhat zany prospector. Harvey, Mary Chase's prize-winning comedy about a pleasant inebriate and his faithful companion, an invisible rabbit named Harvey, was presented in the theatre for three evenings in May, including the Friday of the Spring Prom VVeekend. In the play Jack Spooner, a veteran Loomis actor, gave by far his best performance in the role of Elwood P. Dowd, the happy eccentric with the pooka companion. Mary Hickcox, co- starring as Elwood's sister Veta, was also excellent. Each boy is placed on one ofthe three clubs, Allyn, Ludlow, and Wolcott and the Intramural competition is set up on this basis. During the course ofthe year leagues are arranged and the sports in season are played between teams representing each club. This system insures every boy a chance to compete at his own level as the various leagues are established on graduated planes of ability. One of the two new functions of the Council is to award insignia to all members of a winning club team in the club's color and inscribed with the name of the sport, club, and school. The other is to award minor school letters to boys who have not won their varsity letter but have been named as outstanding competitors by six coaches ofthe club teams on which they have played. Hermon 71 The Maroon and Grey hoopsters roared through their first five games in better fashion than any of their predecessors, but lost three regulars and finished with an 8-5 mark. Even under their handicap, the boys could score and had height, but lost ball games because of lack of speed and a good defense. The original lineup of Bill Gamble and Bill Rush at forwards, Bill Hedeman at center and Pierre Laurent and Pete Ingraham at guards was the most feared outfit in the circuit. After Taft's opening 58-37 defeat, the squad really rolled in a stunning 70-40 conquest of Choate. The fast break piled up 16 points in the first four minutes of the third quarter to turn a close game into a rout. Pomfret was no problem, succumbing 60-39, but the Alumni proved an even easier one, 76-20. The season's highest score, a new Loomis re- cord, was reached in the ensuing 79-31 massacre of La Salette. After a close loss to Deer- field, Hedeman and Radgers emerged as leaders in victories over Suffield, St. Thomas and Wilbraham. The last game defeat by Mount Hermon, 71-58 was an anti-climax to a successful season. The Massachusetts boys had one lad 6'8 and another 6'6 and worked the ball very smoothly, to counteract another Rodgers display of long range marksmanship. Captain George Crossley's rebounding, and the fioor game of Don Anderson and Don Baclaski were great aids in the late season spurt. Hedeman's 205-point total led the team and came ver close to a season record. Al Rodgers and Pierre Laurent also contributed some fine perfbrmances. ' Next year the two high scorers, I-ledeman and Rodgers, return with Anderson and Baclaski and a host of very promising freshmen to try to break some of the records set by the 1952 squad. Those standards are a 751 season total, an average of 58 points a game, 79 points in one game, plus Hedeman's 30 points and 13 field goals in one game. Mr. D'Antonio's first year of coaching was highlighted by the perfect performances of Co-captain Frank Baker, Ivar Aavatsmark and Mundy Peale, and a 34-0 whitewash of Mount Hermon in the finale. Mundy Peale scored eight pins and one decision in nine matches to pace the squad with 43 points, as the team racked up 234 points on 36 pins, 16 decisions and two ties. In yielding a miserly 38 points to the opposition, the Maroon and Grey suffered but one pin. The squad was characterized by wonderful conditioning, aggressiveness and a fighting spirit. YVhile bringing Loomis its first undefeated wrestling season team in the school's history, the boys trampled such formidable foes as Amherst Freshmen Q26-63, Kentf25-SJ and Choate C20-8f. Taft C31-31, VVesleyan Freshmen C33-3j, and Springfield Boys' Club Q28-61, were also no matches for our high-powered grapplers. Co-captain Dale Andrews, Peter Conroy and John Thompson were other seniors who contributed greatly to the team's success, and underclassmen Peter Howard and Co- captains-elect Dave Stainton and Jock Davis were also consistent winners. t K CI.I'B WRFS'I'I.INCQ Bark Row: Spitdcr, Burks, Czlsuio, Iircvillier, Hurwit, Hycrsfmn, IIuntIngmn, Ritlkind. Coach Fowles and his assistants had a powerful well-balanced squad headed by Captain Stanley Hayward and his record-breaking partner, Bill Rush. Hayward climaxed his season of distance victories by winning the Pentagonal mile in 4140.6 minutes, shattering both the meet and Loomis records. Rush established an all- time seasonal point high of 15 by taking hrst place in his three events high jump broad jump and high hurdles in every meet. While compiling this total Bill almost broke the school records for the high jump and the broad jump. Hotchkiss fell 68f63 in the first meet and Taft was the next victim 8025-SOM before a Prom crowd. Phyne Cannon captured both sprints in the latter meet as the Maroon and Grey scored shut-outs in those events. Rush s triple victory' edged Wilbraham 66-51 and at Williston, Loomis amassed 69 points to Deerfield s' 4012 and Williston s 3-Iyg. Hayward won the mile in every meet except the triangular in which he took the half-mile and finished the year with 28 points. S , ' ' Y r' I V - I 1 . n . s ' - ' u in - - - MARCH The first day of the month is a big one, the wrestling team concludes its first unde- feated season in history as they bowl over Mount Hermon, thirty-four to nothing. The team has great spirit and conditioning all the way. Mrs. Andrews gives the team a feast and Mr. Stebbins, not to be outdone, follows suit. Mr. D'Antonio comes in for his share of the congrats too, but modestly gives Mr. Hastings half of the credit. HNCH Andrews, Tiger Peale, Frank Baker, Johnny Thompson, Cube Conroy, Reggie Green, Dave Stainton, jock Davis, and Pete Howard are the toast of the Island. Captain Johnstone leads his rifie team to its second undefeated season in a row, and he and his mates take further laurels. Coach House is seen privately tearing his hair out, after two more winless cam- paigns. Willie the actor Sutton is captured and Mark weeps as his idol is jailed. Sponge plans for his Toga party, Kraemer, Macdonald, and the Boys make plans also. Not to be outdone, Mason and Edda tell everyone how they're going to get BLOTTO . . . MATEY! I Buckethead Thompson turns redhot toward the end of the month in anticipation of things to come, and he gets really burned up. The curtain falls on act two of our little adventure and les eleves head for the clock at the Biltmore. APRIL Suddenly the school becomes alive again as we return from wherever we have been. A select few sport hastily acquired sun tans to the envy of the unselected many. The student body listens agog to the tales of Jack, Pierre, and Bob as they relate strange adventures of civil activities down in Florida. OCC takes a few of the boys down to Saint Pete's for spring training. Vancini got a glimpse of the burning sun and is reminded of distant shores. Ted Wheeler goes skiing with Don and Ben and then yodels his way to Bermuda. The Three Gods of the Beach, entertain Desi at the Miami Stadium. Mancoll gets an A in his driving test. The Glee Club comes into its own with the back row boys starring. They storm Saint Margaret's and Bunny Boynton finally finds his equal. After a successful fiasco at Saint Maggie's the booming bassos bomb Bushnell's accoustics. Hartnett swears that he can hear a faint chorus of Use Darwin, boom, boom filtering from the versatile virtuoso, but Horton and Stone disagree. Striding Stan Hayward's tracksters look promising, and so does the baseball team under the managership of Chris Bassick. VVilliams' acceptances come in and Langmaid, Cutie, and Fischer score. Mosher and Viles take off for New York with O.C.C. as chauffer again, to see if the TIMES is run as well as the LOG. Jeanie Bond is engaged, leaving a trail of broken hearts and Sam Pickett cracking his knuckles. Time comes for Simond to give us his opinions of a year's work at Loomis. We find out that we are really hommes du monde. MAY Before we know it, the piece de resistance of the Dance Committee lies before us Cfor S6.00J. Ah, the Spring Prom at last! Jack and Harry delight the Prom- oers Friday night while lvar and Marilyn do all right Saturday night. On Saturday agernoon, the tennis and track teams respond to the stimulae as Lunt plunges to victory in the 400. Snush sweeps his usual three events as the girls oh, and Hayward grabs the mile as the girls ooh. Canfield's 220 effort is rewarded by a kiss from his mad woman. Instead of the usual Saturday night movie, we all watch Irvine's date jitterbug, which is a double feature in itself. Flossie arrives just in time for Hartman to introduce her at the picnic. Larry Doxsee receives word that he has been awarded the English Speaking Union Scholarship, to study in merry old England for next year. Moo Moon learns that he's going to France this summer under an AFS scholarship. The track team keeps on winning, and soon the college board results are in. Perkins uses his slide-rule, but still makes Harvard on a scholarship. John Hill finally reaches Princeton along with Stone Daniels and deBaun are Princeton men at last. The MacDuHie girls are slated to come down for a block dance, but Ingraham and Bacon conveniently get the German measles, and everything is cancelled. May ends with the Council's sincere efforts to push through an amendment to the constitution, but Flaxman gets in the way and dazzles all with his demogoguery.
