Christian, '49 ............... . ....... President David S. Reed, '49 .............. . . . . . . . . . Vice-President Donald J. Cantor, '49 ............... ........................ S ecretary The Student Council, composed of seventeen boarders and eight dayboys, is the means thru which the student body expresses its opinions and suggestions to the faculty. This student agency assumes the responsibility of keeping order in the donni- tories, inspecting classrooms, and representing the students on the Committee of Review and in the dormitor classification meetings. The Councilor has an important job, and once having taken the oath, he often must make decisions for the general good of the school, sometimes in spite of his personal feelings. Loomis delegates to school government conferences are often surprised when they compare the large amount of student control at Loomis to that of other schools. In many schools, the student council is appointed by the faculty, or at least faculty approved. At Loomis, the students elect their own Council members, and thus make the Council truly representative. Every year the Senior class aids the Council in performing its duties. Under the direction of their adviser, Mr. Grubbs, the Seniors this year formed several committeesg the most important ones being the Library Committee, the Study Hall Committee, the Founders Committee, which kee s order in Founders during the afternoon, and the Dining Hall Committee, which takes attendance and keeps the dining hall running smoothly. Another important committee is the Scholarship Committee, which tutors students in need of extra help with their studies. Row Four: Smith P., Maloney, Viles Perry, Wright I. President Iohn D. Nichols, '49 . .................. ..... ..... V i ce-President DeWitt C. Jones ............................................ Adviser Since its inception in 1930, the Student Endowment Fund has made possible many notable improvements in school facilities, such as Sellers Athletic Field with its permanent drains, the drinking fountains on the athletic fields as Well as the tar road connecting the Tarvia with the cinder track. The Fund also donated the station wagon and hockey floodlights to the school, besides contributing generously toward the construction of the Orchard Theater. H The organization derives the greater part of its income from the Snug, the student operated store, located in Palmer, where ice cream, candy and small essentials may be obtained. Occasional socials and dances are held in the gameroom adjoining the Snug. For the fifth consecutive year the Seniors were granted an evening smoking period there. On the Spring dance weekend, a supper was served to Seniors and their dates. The Fund continues to serve Loomis as an important source of endowment as well as an indispensable unit of the students' life here. Faculty Advisers The Loomis Publications inform the boys, their parents, and the alumni and friends of just what is going on around the school, and also give those boys who wish, a chance to display their literary talents. The Log is a weekly publication which gives the students all the recent news of interest to the school. The paper covers all the school events, and two weekly columns, Little Known Facts and Sports Slants are the most widely read articles in the paper. The Handbook gives to both the old and the new boys the customs and notes of interest about the school. It is also the guide to the rules of the school. The Handbook is a publication which informs the boys of what goes on about the school and gives the new boys a good idea what to expect. The Loom is the magazine for the literary lights of the school. Printed three times a year, it contains the prose and verse efforts of the students. The Press Club keeps the outside world in contact with what goes on on the Island. The members of the club have done a good job this year, with many items about the school in the Hartford, New York and Boston papers. The Loorniscellany gives to the students a compilation of the previous year's activities. It is a publication of value and sentiment to the alumni and students, and the board hopes it has presented a good account of the yearas activities. Director The Glee Club had an unusually successful and busy season this year. Members participated in five concerts and the group was reputed to be one of the best ever produced at Loomis. In December, picked members of the Glee Club, in conjunction with Chaffee, gave two performances of Christmas music in the Chapel and broadcast some of the program from WTIC. ' Fifty members of the Loomis and Chaffee clubs presented four performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe,' in the theater early in March, while boarding members of the club sang in a special music program on Easter Sunday. The annual Music Festival at Bushnell Memorial Auditorium in Hartford was held on April 23rd. As usual, the participating schools were Choate, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Loomis, and Taft. Mr. Duncan Phyfe, music director at Choate, led the combined Glee Clubs in three numbers, while Mr. Karr directed the Loomis club as it sang Hospodi Pomilui , Adoramus Ten, by Palestrina, and The Erie Canal , an early American work song. Crocker Luther sang a baritone solo in the latter. On May 7th, the Glee Club traveled to Waterbury to give a combined concert with St. Margaret's School. A very successful performance was followed by dancing. The combined clubs of Chaffee and Loomis sang at both Commencements, and Senior members of the Glee Club were awarded charms designed by Mrs. B. au- E. . Each spring the Iunto Committee is elected by the school. An inclusive Iunto budget, in addition to the average individual goal, is determined by the juniors each spring before they take over their duties as Seniors. This year, with average individual contributions of 87.50, the total amount of mone amassed was over S2,400. Customary gifts were presented to many educational and humanitarian organizations, such as the Red Cross, the Newington Home for Crippled Children, the Community Chest, the Windsor Social Worker, and the Hampton Institute. Money contributed to Iunto is not only donated to worthy organizations in this country, but a portion is also sent abroad. Ten CARE packages were sent this year to the British Seamen,s Orphans' Home in England. Several years ago, Loomis adopted the war-torn Ecole du Montcel in France, and has since made annual contributions to its support. Before the war, Loomis boys had attended this school through the International Schoolboy Fellowship. Loomis also takes great pleasure in helping to make possible the continuance of the Notre Dame Bay Hospital, in Newfoundland, which is under the direction of a Loomis alumnus, Dr. Iohn M. Olds, '23. The Quaker School, in Eerde, Holland, which was managed by two parents of Loomis alumni for several years, has used its gifts from Iunto to furnish a social room, and has appropriately named it the Loomis Room. if 9' STAGEHANDS UNION Rau, Ihrce Doxsee I Milliken Hurwit Smith P Reed P., Hansen, Perry Viles. DRAMATICS Loomis and Chaffee, again combined, en- joyed another successful dramatic season. Al- though only two major productions were pre- sented the year came up to previous standards of excellence. Iolanthe,', by Gilbert and Sullivan, who are famous for their light operettas, many of which have been staged at Loomis, was put on four times at the close of the Winter term. Mr. Orchard directed the production and Mr. Karr conducted the performance. The orchestra, prepared in the preceding Weeks by Mr. Anderson, was outstand- ing. Iolanthe',, a comical combination of pixies and peers, pokes fun at English law and litera- ture. Ruth Finch and Beverly Sandbach of the Chaffers shared honors with Crocker Luther and DeWitt Loomis. Two exterior sets, designed by Iohn Case, were carefully and competently handled by the Stagehands Union under the supervision of Mr. jones. In view for production on the weekend of the spring prom is a famous mystery play The Batv by Mary Roberts Rinehart, under the direction of Mr. Orchard. The technical effects are perhaps the most difficult ever attempted by the Stage- hands Union. Sound effects of thunder, the car- pentry of a sliding panel, and various degrees of lighting must be achieved. x,. x 1 .,,.,. 9 9' ' , it-7 . ig 1 f. f.I -2 . 1 ei I L? .li A Y s ?'A ,Q S2 1 f n 4 k A., yn! 1 H , f f '. -1 Quv ' . : :VV L I. ATHLETIC COUNCIL The Athletic Council consists of all coaches, captains, and managers of first teams, also general managers, the athletic director, and the headmaster. The main function of the Council is to determine and supervise the school's athletic policy and to award school letters and insignia. One of the most important phases of Loomis athletics is the club system of intramural sports. All boys in the school are assigned to one of the three clubs: Ludlow, Allyn, and Wolcott. In football and basketball these clubs subdivide into seniors, intermediates, and juniors. These groups compete against their counte arts and form senior, intermediate, and junior leagues. There are only two leagues in olds baseball, and one league in soccer, and tennis, track, hockey, and wrestling are not divided into clubs for practice, but there are club competitions as circumstances warrant. Because of this club system all boys are given an opportunity to indulge in competitive sports even if they are not on any Hrst teams. ,N ek 1 lvl, ,232 .1381-Y ..A .4 . 1 LT 1' 't N X 'iv' .if Q. K. FOOTBALL REVIEW Loomis 2 Mount Hermon 18 Loomis 7 Taft 6 Loomis 24 Kingswood 6 Loomis O Hotchkiss 14 Loomis 6 Williston 6 Loomis 30 Kent 0 Peter Reich, '49 ......... . . . ........... .... C aptain john Berman ............ . . . . . . . . . . . . Manager Mr. Erickson, Mr. F owles .................................... Coaches Thanks to the expert coaching of Messrs. Erickson and Fowles, the football team once again compiled a winning record this year. Despite losses to two powerful 0 ponents, Mount Hermon and Hotchkiss, the season was a successful one. This was chiefly dfue to the fact that we triumphed over two principal rivals. The team outclassed Kingswood in the second game of the season and overpowered Kent in the second annual Silver Spoon game. The school was completely enthused with anticipation of the game. Seldom before had there been such spirit over a single contest. The various dorms vied for honors with banners and dummies of Kent players hung from their porches. Mr. B., especially, wanted to retain the Silver Spoon for another year. It was a gratifying victory. Lack of experience and reserve strength were the cause of our loss to Mount Hermon, and the lack of an extra point kicker resulted in a tie with Williston. Most of the offensive punch was supplied by George Christian, Ed Hyman, and Rollie Dugan, using the winged Tv formation. Captain Peter Reich was a stalwart on defense, as were Nichols, Toepke, and Shannon in the line. Mention should be made of the fine support given the team by the entire school. It encouraged the players during many tight spots. 1 v ' . cg. x V .Aziz - -f , , 1 .-3 A , 6. ,- t X IE: , Vg rr 5 N h :fy B, V, F' k. M . REVIEW OF THE SOCCER SEASON Loomis 2 Kingswood 4 Loomis 0 Deerfield 2 Loomis 2 Hotchkiss 2 Loomis 2 Taft 0 Loomis 0 Wfilbraham I Loomis 2 Berkshire 0 Loomis 6 Choate 2 The Loomis Soccer Team enjoyed, what to many may seein a merely mediocre season, but to the players themselves it was very successful. Although the record of three wins, three losses, and one tie doesn't look very good on paper the actual play was much better. The team was coached by Mr. Huntington Mayor, Captain of the 1947 Harvard Soccer Team, and Mr. Frederick Whitehead, and was captained by Bill Smith. This was Mr. Mavor's Hrst year as a coach but, in spite of that, he showed everyone concerned that he knows what he is doing. Mr. Whitehead gave the boys the fundamentals of the game, and between them the team had what was a very excellent coaching staff. The team started slowly, losing three of the Hrst four games. The players just couldn't seem to do anything right. After the Wilbraham game, which was the most poorly played of the season, something came over the team. It seemed to find the spirit and determination that go to make winning teams. The next game was with Deerfield, and although Loomis lost 2-0 it was one of the two best played games of the season. Deerfield was probably the best team in New England, and the team played yaliantly in holding them to two goals. Then the team started on its winning ways, knocking off Taft and Berkshire 2-0 in each game. The last game of the year was a beautiful one to see. Choate was slightly favored to win the contest as a result of a better season's record. However, the coaches decided to shuflle the lineup a bit, and it Was just the thing thc team needed. Woody', Black, Co-Captain elect for next year, drove home three booming goals in the 6-2 victory. That day every one on the team performed almost perfectly the job he was meant to do, and Choate just happened to be the team that fell to the mighty Loomis team. The squad elected as its Co-Captains for the 1949 season c'Woody Black and Irwin Doxsee. The hopes are high for an even more successful season next autumn. The squad ended the season with the impressive record of twelve wins and one loss. The success of the team was due to the determination of the squad to emerge victorious, to the excellent coaching of Mr. Erickson, and to the unfailing support of the student body at all games. There were no stars, although several players stood out in one or two games. Kidd starred in both Westminster games and also in the game with Pomfret. Roche was top man in both the Choate and Kingswood games, Metz was high scorer against Suffield, and he was among the high scorers in other contests, Captain Christian led the team against Hotchkiss and DeerHeld. Nichols played brilliantly in the Wilbraham game, recording the highest individual score for any one game, with twenty points. Undoubtedl several events during the season cannot be forgotten. With two seconds left in the Suflielld game, Roche dropped a set shot from mid-court for a 44-43 victory. Similarly, in the Wilbraham game, Roche put in the winning basket at the foul line with only seconds to go. Another item is the season record of 115 points scored by Dave Metz. Jim Kidd followed closely with 110 points. Loomis ended the season with a total of 633 points to 496 for the opponents, thereby giving the team an average of 48.7 points a game, to 38.1 for the opposing teams. r ' R L. Pitching appeared to be the only real problem, only Rollie Dugan and Doug Pierson returning from last yearis mound corps. Although Dugan pitched only one complete game, an eight to three victory over Taft, Coach Erickson uncovered three pitchers from the starting lineup, Ceorge Christian, Chuck Pease, and Captain Bob Quinn. Bob Davis showed promise and will be counted on next year. These four all pitched well, mostly in relief roles, helping the team on to victory. Dugan, Christian and Reed lcd the hitting. Reed, who blasted a grand slam home run, held down the catchers post. The year's record, a highly respectable eight wins and three losses, was highlighted by two important victories over two of Loomisis most cherished rivals. Shimkus and Lay had a very spirited and successful season despite the loss of the ailing stars, Wilson Christ and Al Brody. As a team, the Loomis netmen won eleven out of thirteen contests, losing only to Kent and the very superior Choate team. Until stricken by measles toward the end of the season, Lyman Page turned in by far the most impressive record by winning seven matches in nine starts in the number one position. The team was greatly strength- ened by such ncwcomers as captain-elect Ralph Tucker, who played number one in the last two matches, and sophomores Mac Fiske and Don Brigham. The doubles teams were very dependable, winning 892 of their matches. During the last four years, since Mr. Shimkus took over the coaching duties, the teams have been extremely successful, winning thirty-two and tying one, out of a total of forty matches. Prospects for next year seem good, with a nucleus of seven or eight outstanding underclassmen and strengthened by excellent first-team coaching and a rapidly growing club system. Lusty greetings of wraaaahn were exchanged, and many a step wavered under the burden of too much luggage and a hot September sun. The term has run smoothly until now, and at present hopes are high for a successful year. The Ginny tries to impart some of his savoir-faire to his younger brother, but White Shoei' Weston and Cabe,' Schryver see him first. Bidwell Quinn issues double A's to everyone in sight as the Fall Athletic casualties hit a new peak. Among those injured is Limpy', Florence, who finds all his courses simple in spite of his Chem teacher,s efforts. Terry Batchelder informs Flo that all guts,' must be reported to him, and no 'Lbutsv about it. Already a state of war exists between Barton and Copp, and they are both busily digging at their respective pits in preparation for the impending battle. Informal statistics favor Barton to win out by a nose , Tales of daybo weekends have already begun to catch the ears of claustrophobic boarders. Bill Smiths introduction of indoor football is deemed most educational. Hunnicutt and Dave Reed show great promise with their Farming interests, and so ends September . . . OCTOBER 10f30-Dear Diary-Another month has passed and the term still seems to be running smoothly. Abstainin', Toepke is already starting the drive for Senior Smoking purely out of unselfish devotion to his classmates. The Barney Qwhich twin has the Toniffll Boys are composing poetry in recognition of the lovely Autumn vista spread about them, while Nel Sarris censures the Red Sox management daily. Ed Hyman admits that there are some odd redheads in the World, and Choo-Choov Palmer turns pink with Savageness in defense of the point. Even though Donovan's Yanks,' folded in the stretch it is still a chore to silence him, Sarrisfs Soni, have been a let down. The Sod begins weight lifting in earnest, but gives it up when he realizes he looks like before ads of jim Brown and Pete Reed. Miss Moody has already improved dining hall facilities, but there is still plenty of chicory to munch on. '6Zorc,' likes it though. It nourishes his Musial-like orbs to improve his midnight baseball games with Pudgev. The Kingswood football game proves the usual romp, and Mr. B. rewards seven soleless seniors with carfare back. Sigg graciously pockets the offering as a donation to the Clapp Memorial Pool Fund. The Fall Prom comes and goes, giving Winter Track an early start. 'iKnobs Christian is seen flashing his toothless smile at a group of admiring Freshmen and giving lectures on the correct wayv to open coke bottles. Pete Shannon tests jean's fidelity by plucking hairs from Beichis head-Shannon loses Jean .... NOVEMBER 11,130-Dear Diary-Quarter exams arrive, and campus gloom is not caused by the leafless elms' along the Senior Path. Crowley is seen thumbing through his Files , Bob Smith diligently empties the waste basket in the mimeograph room, and Powers decides to stay home nights. All methods, fail, and some guys decide to study. Reed, Winters, Cantor, and Woodson manage to squeeze by. Football ends on a triumphant note with Kent as final victim, and Bruno poses happily with the fabled spoon. Soccer has its glories as well, K'The Limeyv amazes every- one with his footwork and skill. Man Mountain Newton completely devastates the Treadway system, so it looks like chicory and dried beef again. Burns opens a developing lab on Taylor second, severely cutting the circulation of Varga calendars. A voice from a Fog puts a stop to this, however. Ahrens and Woodford hibernate in Hartland, and escape freezing only with the aid of a camel who comes puffing opportunely by. Knox just Storrs himself away from it all. The final athletic event of the season is the intramural cross-country run, which is thoroughly enjoyed by all. What could be better, Henry VVhite asks, than the feeling of cool air being drawn into one's lungs as the ground flies effortlessly by?,, I. C. Smith, in spite of his splendid physical condition, collapses at the corners of Sellers Field, but 'Speedy Bill Marseilles and F lying johnny' Case sacrifice personal honors to help their fallen comrade across the finish line. The military is introduced as Sod,s Armyv marches in. Christmas Casinon opens up with the introduction of a lottery of some sort. It has to do with dates, one merely picks a day and month, and waits for Providence to reward him with material wealth. The sharpies go to 'Kthose who know in search of a sure thing, Barney Lewis is finally rewarded with the probable winner subject to change without further notificationf' Fog introduces his points for College entrance quiz. Reed and Donovan manage to cancel each other out with plus and minus scores respectively. Next comes that long awaited glorified weekend, better known as Thanksgiving Recess. Crowds of seniors butt their way through crowded railroad terminals to catch the homeward trains. Sim Smith gets lost in Harvard Yard, but Sweetie manages to steer him to New York City and eventually back to school , . . DECEMBER 12f29-Dear Diary-The short session between Thanksgiving and Christmas recesses is divided between the talk of past and coming fun , although a few guys still find time to study. Faber elaborates on how he was voted Biggest Man in Thompsonville, and nobody begrudges him the honor. Toepke tries to start a new fad by having pork for breakfast every morning, but Pete Shannon is the only other senior who considers it worthwhile. Says Herm, It certainly hel s one's physical conditionv, but almost everyone else is content to sleep 'til ten and wait For dinner time to get their first nourishment. The weather is still mild, which seems to suit everyone except the hockey boys, who have their e es fixed on the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. The boys are forced to be satisfied with dry practice on the asphalt tennis court, however, until Mr. Buttrick introduces B Ball as a physical conditioner. Both wrestling and basketball begin practice with high hopes for a successful season. Newton challenges Reich,s right to the unlimited class, while Pudge's set shots make him an asset to the hoop squad. Loomis and Chaffee get together officially for the first time this year to sing Christmas Carols as a deviation from the yearly presentation of the York Nativity Play. By special request the program is broadcast over WTIC, and that station becomes the sole possessor of a spangler . Metz's singing throughout the concert was hampered by the presence of ugurlsv, and midwinter Farming held the eyes of most members of the Loomis Club. The wait for Christmas Recess seems unbearable, with such seniors as Siggins and Florence planning their snowball-throwing funn in the vicinity of the Biltmore Lounge. The dormitory Christmas parties arrive, with Nel Sarris' interpretation of ,Twas the Night Before Christmas and Mr. Evenson's bearded rendition of Santa Claus as the occasionis highli hts. The traditionally impressive library reading of Dickens's Christmas Carol by Mr. B. Brings the term to a close . . . JANUARY 1f21-Dear Diary-The snow is mounted hi h around the dorm while Shannon plays taps for all the dead soldiers buried there. T Be Owl ' asks, W'ho killed 'im? Kenny Gilmore and Barney Lewis pl the Stook' daily with pleas for no more themes d'imitation, but the Paragon of Palmer Third pays scant heed to them, instead he concentrates upon improving Woodsonls astoundingl low linguistic aptitude. Senior entertainment hits an all time high when Steggerda and, Pickett give enlightening speeches upon the beauties of clouds and diesel engines respectively. King Nicotine reigns supreme in Palmer Basement as the long delayed butting binge finally comes off. Toolie', manages to do a fair job of asphyxiating the whole group by breaking open a brand new pack of Alligatorsv. Meat Hands begs him to throw them into his rather noticeable pit. Sod says he never would have made the year without smoking. Follert says he certainly wouldn't. Midyears are a pleasant interlude and as a result of their arrival Mary B. Keane of the Hartford Armory becomes the pin up girl of all Loomis eighteen year olds. Handsome Huntiev terrifies the Chem B Boys by his seemingly boundless store of scuntified phenomena. Siggins and Carroll refuse to be daunted by him but Mikeska's quest for English knowledge is somewhat detoured. Winters finally makes it to school in order to dash off a few minor details, but he,s soon off again in a puff of smoke. Oh well, the-re,s still February to look forward to .... FEBRUARY 2f27-Dear Diary-The Midyears came and left the Senior Class lower than the Little Ginn's', belt buckle. Toepke decides at long last that he no longer has the Powers fnot Billy he thought he had. Petie Reich fights through his laborious exam schedule and modestly admits that he did quite well. The sweet little fellow grins boyishly while throwing Iim Kidd playfully up and down. Survey classes are mobbed by eager scientists who hang breathlessly upon Mr. Rogers's every word, especially Cantor who vies with Roche for the position of most likely to set off the Cathode Ray Hypo Frequency Calculator, that Dr. Nick has created to wake up Owen during lab classes. John Walber goes religious very suddenly. He is loudly accused by Barber of poaching upon his territory. John laughs and says he wasn't fishing for jail anyway. The Cutthroat Co. of Brown and Kunz continues its ghastly blood letting upon Batch Second much to the dismay of Ahrens who neglected to bring his sponge. Basketball amazes everyone, especially Sweetie', who withdraws his Harvard a pli- cation after the Wilbraham game in favor of Long Island U. Mr. Buttrick gladly schedjules an exhibition game with the Toronto Maples, but has to call it off due to Batchelder's sudden lapse into poor playing condition. Ajax', Files a nifty rifle record that will certainly stamp him as a big gun for years to come. Tom Parks goes to New York and forces NVQ-ston to burst into tears when he tells him how he spent his time there .... MARCH 3f30-Dear Diary-Only seventeen days left. It,s been a great Winter Term, yeah, great! Everyone has those NVinter Term Bluesf, It always happens-just one of those things that can't be helped. The Basketball team has been going great guns. NVe beat Wilbraham on the Pudge's,, foul shot with one-half minute left to play, 58-52. That gives us a 12-1 record-one of the two best teams in the school's history. The 1938 team had an 11-1 record. The wrestling team, coached by Mavooooor has been having a good season. Hockey is the same as usual -no ice, no Wins. We open our annual Gilbert and Sullivan production on the twelfth. It is Iolanthe, starring the Rotund Onef' Crocker Luther. We set the audience in the aisles with the trio number. Bill Smith and john Foster Hitting around like fairies and Crotcher', bouncing up and down really do leave an impression of humor. We go home! This Hue St. Patrick's Day is a fine one to leave school. The boys donit bother to wear green as they all have that vertuous look as they wave good-by to the Island after a very wearing Winter Term. What do the boys do on this fine Spring Vacation? Some head for the sunny South while others stay home to dissipate. Chortling Art and his boys make their annual jaunt to fair-weathered Fla. What a crewl Art , Gus,', Bruno , Rabbit , Carmine,', and Fudge find the state is very c'scenic . Sunny,', The Monsieurv and the Rare-Dee- Daresi' rent a car and wreck it. Pepper,' Quinn takes a few workouts with the Red Sox but finally decides to sign with Loomis this spring-better all around facilities. The rest of the boys stay home and do their darnedest to turn West Hartford upside down. Cantor, Hurwit, and Hyman go into 'gconfinementv and are not seen until school time rolls around again. Parties every night of one sort or another-mostly another. This merriment is climaxed by a brawl thrown by a junior at which a great discovery is made -the Sophomores do, too. Honey,' and Timmy become movers of a television set, buzzing it around in a convertible. I-Ioneyv ends his vacation by doing a tightrope act on his roof with Bill Smith and T.V. aerial. IC, and the CUT spend a few evenings at the Casino. They swear the sights there are better than Florida. However, there is one sad note to the whole vacation-Shannon and Jeannie break off friendly relations. Everyone is happy to get back to start a scintillating Spring Term. Especially the Barnetts. They say the food in Florida is terrible .... APRIL 4,f28-Dear Diary-Spring moves its allegiance to the school with its initial presen- tation of buds and flowers. The happy chirping of the birds and days of sunshine are overshadowed, however, by the prospect of coming E. R. B. and College Board exams. Everyone spends at least four hours preparing for each E. R. B. test, and Bill Smith surprises everyone by studying twelve hours on English and still rating a minus percentile. Only one short week later the College Boards arrive, and the Seniors rate college entrance as the biggest question in their immediate futures. The Barney boys make Trinity without taking the awful tests , and antagonize the other seniors by laughing and doing funny things with their science books. Iohnny Case takes that if Rooney can do it, so can In attitude and applies to Harvard. Terry Hill is confident enough in Iohnnyis ability to offer premature congratulations. The English Department begins to clamor for book reports and the Meesh,' finds an open market for his Book of the M onth Club condensations. It is again proved that crime does not payi' as justice triumphs and Pete Reedis English poem is u1'GCOgHlZCd,,. Cabe Schryver and clean livinw' Iim Edwards prove their love of the outdoors by instituting native hikes on the grounds. Their dissertations on the relative merits of weeds of the iieldsv are held as the greatest local authority on this subject. For some unknown reason Henry White and Bob Smith end up in Group three, they still manage to hit Hartford occasionally. The warm spring sun causes the appearance of the baby oil on the campus, as sun bathing comes to the fore. The get that tan all overv craze comes to an abrupt halt when a faculty wife walks unsuspectingly in the vicinity of the winter track. The tables are turned, however, when a group of tree plantersi' surprise some female sun bathers at the sister school. Mr. Norris tells a group of seniors that he wishes his wife would stop referring to their new arrival as the Squirrelette. Both the tennis and baseball teams begin their seasons victoriously, and April departs on the same warmth and sunshine that ushered it in .... if-Mg, , .F Y myz, . . f 'J' 'fl 'R4k'f.:ft.v77-4' L -,. TW? Ni r -1' . xiii'-all ': IV, la 'Ti MAY 5,131-Dear Diary-NVitl1 the school year drawing closer and closer to an end, thc month of May becomes the biggest social season of the year. Early in the month the Clee Club boys travel to St. Margaret's for a combined concert followed by an informal dance. Sigg and Mergetroyd each make an early hit, and then the doors are locked and the dance begins. Five Loomis boys disappear at intervals throughout the evening and Streich suggests that the Glee Club adopt lf you knew Susie as their theme song. The blue-grey haze in the returning senior bus adds atmos- phere, but Stein Halvorssen takes a deep breath and passes out. Before the excitement from the St. Margaret's concert is entirely gone, the Spring Prom is upon us. The lucky fellows meet their girls at the train, while others meet whoever it is that they,ve invited. Both the track and baseball teams are victorious, and Tom Parks, girl adds humor with such questions as, Why is that boy running, is he afraid of Mr. Erickson? and, Why is everyone cheering? I thought that fellow was supposed to catch the ball. Metzis girl wants to know what round this is. The Bat presents light enter- tainment for the evening, and the Swedes, entrance is greeted with snores of approval. The Prom itself is a big success, but Peaseis girl proves disappointing when she asks him to turn on the lights so she can see the famous rock collection. Other couples hold a prayer session, and the dancing commences. By Sunday morning everyone is ready to say goodbye, and things .again return to normal on the campus. C aHee Spring Day, highlighted by the official opening of new Sellers Hall, proves a big financial success. The only boys who can afford to have fun are those who leave their wallets home. The girls prove the prowess of the weaker sexi' by fleecing such sharpies as Al Crowley and Nel Sarris. The money is all for a good cause, however, and nobody really minds his loss. Doc Talmage gets a Long all right, and informal dancing ends the celebration. The Memorial Day baseball game at Kingswood, in which our boys are victorious, means another winning athletic season. The seating capacity at the game proves adequate, but some boys bring boxes along anyway, although their foresight is deemed unnecessary. Thus with memories of victorious athletic teams and good fun foremost in our minds, we bring to a close another chapter in our lives at Loomis .... JUNE 6f1O-Dear Diary-Those long awaited official envelopes begin to arrive from the various colleges and universities. The seniors are coming into the home stretch, and an understandable sadness makes graduation just a little bit dreaded by those who have come to know and appreciate Loomis. Final exams arrive and Bill Walsh decides to take a few just to change my B's to A's',. The faculty-senior smoker is a big success, and the seniors accept and appreciate the Commencement Dance. The final chapel address of the year is given by Mr. B., and its acceptance is marked by that same respectful silence that characterized such truly great speeches as Linc0ln's Gettysburg Address. More than a few eyes are filled with tears over the prospect of the retirement of two people who have been Loomis. The Class of ,49 extends hearty wishes for the future of a grand couple. The big day arrives, and the diplomas are awarded. Even Terry Batchelder gets one. The G ee Club presents its final concert and Commencement parties dominate the scene. We Seniors say not goodbye, but It's been fun: Weive enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks, and so long, we'll be seeing you. . . . EPILOGUE BY THE ADVISER l have shepherded all Loomiscellany staffs from the beginning. Editing is perhaps one of my suppressed vocations, inherited from the newspaper grandfather for Whom I was named. Anyway, there have been years of fun, but, naturally, I have had a rather special interest in the '49-ers. Whether or not it has been a better class than others, and on this point we are of one opinion, Mrs. B and I feel it has been peculiarly our class. I wish you might all have been here for the Alumni and Parents dinners. I have never before seen, and couldn't have imagined, such a splendid send-off as they gave us- gorgeous gifts, in one of which you have had your share, and we are very grateful. But, better than any material gifts, a very Warm, friendly, and cheerful fellowship.
