Mr. SicKee's inventive ingenuity and unbounded ability for long, hard jobs were sorely missed. However, the McKee trained members of the Stagehands Union, under the leadership of Henry Krotzer, rose to the occasion and did a superb job of building sets and handling the other technical aspects of the theatre. The XVinter Play at Loomis, this year, was Sidney Kingsley's i'Dead End . The script presented a difficult problem in editing, but Nlr. Orchard excellently surmounted this problem without any loss of meaning or effectiveness. The play was very well cast and the acting of the entire company was certainly far above secondary school level. One might say that the members of the cast seemed almost to belong to the Dead End en- vironment. Mr. Orchards direction again made the audience wonder whether there could be anything better than this play, just as Loomis audiences wondered about Our Townu, You Can't Take It XVith You , and The Green Pasturesn. In the Spring, the Orchestra, the Clce Club, and Chaffee girls collaborated in Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzaneeu. This sparkling operetta was given with great success during the Spring Dance weekend and at Commencement time for the parents of Seniors. Mr. Orchard and Nlr. Card spent long hours supervising this offeringg Mrs. Johnson and Mrs, Casparian, cheerfully lent their labors to the costuiningg Mrs. Merrill and Mr. Sutton helped greatly with the orchestra. The fruits fully justified their labors. 2110 Lese Crlttenden Lym111 Wlehl Blomqx1st l11ffl15 A Coolt B11dlo1d R C Loo11115 NIacNlaclx1n K1otLe1 Iuplan Rablnowltz Nir OILlldId STAGEHAN DS UNION Thls xea1 as 111 those precedmg the t1reless work of the St1QCl11I1Cl5 U111o11 xx IS 1 Ldlilllldl factor 111 makxnv Loo1n1s pl1vs the fxne successes tl11t thu xxtre 'lhc 1b515nCe ot 'xir NIc,Kee the Unxons gllldlllg Splflt III prewous XCJIS xx 15 5o1tlx felt but the t1le11ts of Hcnrv Krotzcr auvmented bx the counsel of Nlr Orchard ox me 1111e all ob5t1cl15 xv1th room to Spare tl11s suspense rldden drama a xerx excellent x1CtOIldI1 1llt6X101 xx 15 bullt Tha hffhtmv w1s wtll handled accentuatmg the mood of the plav Dead End tl1e Loomls Chaffee xvmter play presented 111 extremelx tllfT1Cl1lt problem It xx IS nccessarx to uproduce on the stave ot the Loomxs Theatre '1 sect1on of 'Nexx Horlt C,1tx strut a tene ment housc 111 1Hluent t15l11o111ble apartment house 111d f1 POIUOIT of the East Pux er all IIT one scene Nttdless to s1x the set xx 15 llllllt It xxas xerx real 1st1C ex en to the SIJl1Sl'l1l1U of the sxx 1m ITICIS 1D the TIXLI The LITIOU CIOKKIlCCl a sutussful xca1 bx clo1nU the sets for the f1n1l plax Cxl bert and Sulhx 111s Pzrates of Pen ance As usual the job xx as xx ell done Q . . -nlvt V 7 ,., ' , 7' -' '. , ., 1 . Taylor, Greeley, Coulthard, Davidson REVIEW OF SEASON The Senior Football season of 1942 was evenly matched and hard fought. There was present in the new intra-mural system all of the excitement, tension, and competitive spirit that there was in the years of outside schedules, some think the new way even more successful. Allyn won the Senior Club title, but Allyn did not win its title easily. Ludlow matched Allyn, game for game, throughout the season. It was not until the last game had been played on that muddy field, not until the lead had changed twice in that game. that Allyn pulled away to win, 15-6, and to cop the championship as well. That final game was played on Fall Sports day, one of the most colorful and spirited days of athletics that Loomis has ever had. The Band played, rooting sections were tremendously en- thusiastic, everyone did something, all either cheered or played. The following fellows won their letters: Allyn: Adams, Bulmer, Davidson, Davis, Greeley, Hovey, Keller, Pickett, Spaulding, S. Taylor, Stroock. SENIOR SOCCER The Soccer Season, among the Senior Clubs, was a highly contested and interesting one. At the outset, it appeared that Ludlow would completely dominate the scene. The Ludlow team was made up, for the most part, of players from the first and second teams of last year. Ludlow, however, had no easy time. VVolcott put a powerful, hard hitting team on the field. Throughout the season XVolcott matched Ludlow, stride for stride, and at times it appeared that the vaunted Green would be upset. Allyn had the mis- fortune of losing several of its best men at the outset of the season. Though the Red de- feated neither Ludlow or Wolcott, it was a highly spirited team and always a threat. There were excellent soccer players on all of the clubs, if there had been outside athletics this year, Loomis would undoubtedly have had a first rate team. As the season drew to a close, Ludlow and Wolcott were tied, both having won five, lost one and tied one game. Thus the season was to be decided by the final game be- tween those two teams. On a muddy Fall Sports Day they met and through the Erst three quarters there was no score. Finally, there was a burst of scoring and Ludlow drew ahead to win, 2-1. The intra-mural system is supposed to be one of war's hardships, but the fact is that this year more boys enjoyed more soccer than ever before. The following fellows won their letters: Ludlow: Feingold, Horsey, Howe, Hunnicutt, Knell, Mavor, McKay, Nelson, Redden, Van Vleck, XVeissman. W'0Icott: Bristol, Hobson, Ladish, Milner, Penley, XVarner, XViehl, D. XVilson. Allyn: D. Carter. Dorain, H. Eldredge, Marks, Rabinowitz, Torell. Odis bodkins, as some sage cleric once remarked: Here goeth us again! Opening day at the Institute puts a speedy end to the lingering, o-so-gud memories of vacation idyls. But We are cheered by the touching sight of Uncle john Shaville selling condemned Endowment Fund furniture to dayboy freshmen. Everybody is telling everybody else how hard he worked Csay, I bet my calluses are bigger than yoursj and how much mazuma he took in. Pickles Simmons relates how he fell into the sour gherkin vat trying to piece together the loose ends of an A. F. of L. lot. Saldly we learn of twelve former facultarians having departed our midst for the Services. Alas, school can not close, as ten spring up to take their place, including the charming Mesdames johnson and Finley-an addition which will make the curricula somewhat more tolerable. The Log plods its twenty-eighth journey homeward. It is a tiny tabloid now, geared to meet the emergency. Mass calisthenics begin on Sellers field, Apollo Sceery directing. as Loomis tightens its belt, faces, heads up, and shoulders out, another grim year. '-u is N ' K I as OCTOBER Intensiiied intramural program gets under way with nine football and six soccer teams in stiff competition. Mr. F owles orders eleven pairs of sturdy waterwings. Now the red giants will be safe during those rainy practice periods. Ludlowmen warm up with advanced versions of the Burpee Test. Big Pete Bland is the first casualty of the season, being laid up with a big greasy old warped toenail. We visit the Goode Abbess of YVeiley's cell on VVarham II. It is a delightfully chaste jumble of decorous and somewhat demode froufrou which Giaour plucked with loving hands from a Bon Ton in Canton. Perhaps the Abbess has gone to pieces in absence of the Studio, but she still has Hippolyte. Good Afternoon! Braaugh ..... Verily, hast the cosmic challenge of the totalitarians been answered? Today, a huge Q. T. rally was held in the chapel. Vivacious, magnetic, teeming with Schickelgruberian brilliance, Nate Safford whipped the crowds to feverish intensity. The climax, or should I say the zenith, of this ultra-thrilling event occurred when the Bishop ordained young Saff on the steps of the high altar. But by some mysterious, sabotagical force, ,the vast hall was emptied in a matter of seconds. YVhy? The great Osram materializes himself to the Loomis Theatre. Osram, greater than ever, does a magnificent now-you-see-it-now-you-don't act with Shammy Titleis chrome plated-platinum golf trophy. Needless to say, Shy is quite distressed. Recalcitrant sophomores with a dastardly coup d'etat seize the venerable and sacred pawth, but their luscious triumph is short-lived as the venerable and sacred owners arrive on the premises. Ludlow smashes Wolcott 6-0 in zippy game, Minnow Berking stars. NOVEMBER Alas, the coondogs of fall are fast on wintry bootstrapsg Bill Sly and his men are taking off the screens not without a touch of tristeness. Gales from the northlands play havoc with the Thrush, turning it over on its back, its pathetic paws in the air. The Thrush is a tiny byplane which suffered a nasty crash in 1940. The Ski Club bought this heart-rending glob of fuselage, nursed it back to health, and graciously presented it to the Aeronautics Group. On Halloween the Gremlins reincarnated the Thmsh on the Senior Path. Iovial throngs gather for saucy costume brawl. Orchid comes in a dear little edition of Alys 81 the Madhatter which of course wins first prize. Hollowitz brings Stinky along too. NVartime fall dance is a tremendous success. The famille Merrill introduce a variety of new and dashingly executed steps. A gcnteel round of applause goes to the Dance Coirnnittec and Knobby NValsh's Maroons for their splendid contributions to the evenings gaiety. Gigantic sportz festival climaxes fall season. Ludlow soccermen slofg their way to victory against YVolcott on a Held of mud. Allyn with fateful superstroock strategy tramples down Ludlow 15-6. Ladies in Retirementv is skilfully produced by the charming Chatters of Chaffee CChez F illesj. Bradford is lone, lorn anchorman. You clean up the darkroom or I will! was the victorious campaign slogan. The weird case of Mr. Flynn presents us with an emotional upheaval and a wide- spread lowering of morale, or should we say morals. Direct teletype connections with the New York Daily News are set up in Founders Hall, classes are suspended as the tense trial reaches a climax. The President must be more careful in choosing his am- bassadors after this. Ludlow is presently leading the intramural nines as Dissell stars at the bat. Gor- geous hymnsings occur nightly on XVarham II, especially moving is Lt. Neileyis rendition of Now the Day is Overn. Harry Holmesis hair is back to light auburn again. 'KNumber, pleuzzv is the familiar opening of a wartime track meet. The Log Boards, their advisers, and future journalists gnaw on four delicious turkeys in the Snug. Loud lauds are sung to Mr. Grubbs and Mr. Morse for their indefatigable efforts. Ah yes! the climax of Loomis social activities. the Spring Dance is here. The Glee Club gleefully presents The Pirates of Penzance which earns more laurel wreathes to stack up on the already crowded shelves of the Glub's Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire. MacNIackin makes a mighty Major General, proving that the Studio still has its talons firmly entrenched in the Loomis Theatre. The informal Friday night dance is a perfect setting for the almost irresistible combination of Flame Flammer's jitterbugging to Dina Spaulding's sax. Bob Halprirfs orchestra plays for the big-time Saturday nighters. Sunday night brings a great emotional vacuum. O wrath! by a foul Pearl Harbor stroke, the Path is captured, but I hope not for long, May scuds along and another year is Hnished. THE SUMMING UP AND LOOKING AHEAD It has been a very pleasant year malgre tout. The intramural seasons have been unbelievably successful. K. P. shifts and apprentices in the nook have proved their met- tle. YVartime living has brought with it a wealth of friendliness. The class of 1943 will leave this quiet, unharried life regretfully. A large share of the seniors will face the Services in some form. Nearly all will follow an existence directlv concerned with the winning of the warg whether it be accelerated college programs or summer employment. All will look back to 1943 fondly in the years to come. Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque valeln x . s. I Aw. v-Q1 gnu N S 'n N x v 1 ' A xx gif 1 f I . .no .
