' A 4 ei' STUDENT COUNCIL Ceorge Cook 3rd, 74:2 ....... President Richard D. Wagner, 112 Vice-President Albert H. Donnelly, 112 .,,, ..,.... S ccretary Since the first year of school, Loomis has had student government controlled by the Student Council. Today the Council has twenty-five members, seniors and juniors, who are elected semi-annually by the school. This year has seen three important changes in school routine. A faculty-council committee devised a new discipline system whereby infractions of traffic rules are automatically punished by ll Saturday detention. The plan was adopted by both Council and faculty. To compensate for the increased burden put on the faculty by the war, seniors now preside over all periods of study hall. A Commit- tee of Review, with rotating membership, but including one master and one councillor from each classification group, with the Headmaster an ex-oHicio member, acts at once on serious cases of discipline and classification appeals. ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE Frank E. Rogers, '42 ,....,......................,.,. ..,,.,.,,,.A..,,...,.......w,........ President Carlyle F. Barnes, ,43 .rrrrrrrrrrrrrr,r...rrrrrr.......,rr.........,...Yw.,.,wV. Vice-President Once more this year the student-run Endowment Fund furnished the financial assistance to promote many projects for the improvement of our school. The chief source of income is the Snug,', a shop, located in the basement of Palmer Hall, where boys may buy refreshments as well as a few necessities. During the years since its formation, the Endowment Fund has been responsible for such improvements around school as Sellers Field, drinking fountains on the athletic fields, and the school theater, which is being built slowly by the yearly funds donated. This year the fund donated enough money to pay for the building of an improved floor for the stage. Estimated profits for the year are large considering the times. They will be salted away against the day when conditions permit an eight-foot extension of the auditorium and the installation of a projection booth. i c I 5 PUBLICATIONS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Keith S. The Log is the school uewspa ver which deals 'tl ill l I W1 1 1 tie current activities on the campus. It is a very successful branch of our publications and has been operating at a profit for several years. This year its surplus was great enough to permit a generous donation toward the purchase of a war ambulance. The Loom is an lIll.Ol'lIl21l literary book and is made up of choice bits of literature discovered by masters or pupils, but always written by members of the student body. Faculty Adviser This yearls Log Board, with Keith Petersen managing the editorial end, and Michael Sudarsky handling the business affairs, has done an exceptionally good job. Four eight page issues were printed to supplement the twenty-two regular sized issues throughout the school year, one at the time of the Fall Dance, another at the end of the winter term, and two in the spring term, at the Dance and at Commencement. The feature articles and the editorials were outstanding, both were Well written and contained amusing and interesting material. They mixed the lighter side with the more serious and added much to the success of the Log. This year, for the first time, a new feature article, Around Herev, was added. This column told what was ha enin around the cam us and dealt with a wide variet of PP 3 5 P Y topics. WVith its popularity already proven, this feature should be one of the best next vear. The year's profits were donated to the British-American Ambulance Fund. LOOMISCELLANY Dudley H. Fay, jr., '42 ....,,Q. ,., m,Y,,,,. ..A........... ,...,...... This was distributed to some twenty different charitable causes. In January junto assumed responsibility for the emergency Red Cross drive and raised four hundred dollars more. Sacrifice luncheons in the dining hall produced a hundred dollars which went to needy families in XVindsor for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and presents, under the supervision of the Family Service Society. The Hartford Union Settlement VVorkers' program, sponsored by Iunto last year, grew to such proportions that it became a separate activity under the guidance of Mr. Hansen. The Loomis Ambulance Drive to supply an ambulance for the British-American Ambulance Corps was organized by Mr. Grubbs as a Iunto project but was undertaken by an independent committee of energetic workers, who raised the unprecedented sum of two thousand dollars, sufficient to send out a fully equipped ambulance bearing the Loomis name. , . 2 5 e ' f . In view of the exciting world situation there were many interesting informal discussions among the boys, concerning all the different aspects and happenings. Mrs. johnson, Mrs. Savage, and Mrs. Britton, custodians of the Wardrobe, were indispensable to the theatre. The l941-1942 season Was probably one of the most successful and inclusive in the history of the Union. ln all six plays were staged, railroad stations, barrooins, convents, ship decks, and Victorian mansions, all were constructed. The Ticket'-Of-IQcf11Ue Man was especially important to the stagehands, requiring as many sets as all the other produc- tions put together. Through the generosity of Mrs. Arthur Shipman, of Hartford, several valuable addi- tions to the supply of stage props were acquired, also during the year a costume room was built in the cellar, a finished floor Was laid on the stage, and the puppet theatre of the Cercle Francais was installed upstairs. There is general supervision of athletic policy, including the awarding of insignia, the appointment of managers, and the appropriation of funds. For convenience in administration there is an Executive Com- mittee with Mr. Pratt as Chairman. The chief duty of the Council this year has been to adapt schedules to war condi- tions. The fall and winter games were played as usual, with the exception that Deeriield Day was simplified and divided between Deerfield and Loomis, so that only teams and not student body traveled. Unprecedented injuries made a bad situation worse. Captain Wagner, who had been looked upon as a mainstay, was lost for the season after a single game, in which he set up a 7-0 victory over West- minster by a brilliant last-minute rush. Time and again a reorganized backfield was dis- rupted by an injury to a key man. The team lost a nip-and-tuck thriller to Berkshire, and on a rain-swept Kent field turned in its best performance to tie a favored home team. Taft, Hotchkiss, and Deerfield were altogether too powerful. Throughout the season Iim Dougherty played superbly in the line and Ernest Wilkin- son proved invaluable in the backfield. C 0 ach The first basketball team had its bright moments and its dark ones as it went through the 1942 season with Hve victories and five defeats. At the outset prospects were uncer- tain, for though there were only four returning letter men, there was almost all of last yearls excellent second team to draw on. Thus, working with an almost entirely new group of players, Coach Maynard shaped up the team. The opening game was dropped to Morse College. Following this, however, the team seemed to Hnd itself as it fought to defeat a favored Taft team in a close, spirited contest. Pomfret, too, was downed, a week later. Losing the next game to NVilbraham, the team went on to defeat Suffield and then slumped to lose to the Choate five. Bouncing back vigorously, the quintet downed decisively both VVestminster and Kent. In the last two games of the season Loomis met two superior teams, VVilliston and Deerfield, and lost to both of them in hard fought encounters, rounding out a season of good, hard ball. Nevertheless, many of the games were extremely close and more games were played than in any recent year, and with a high level of skill. All through the season NVagner sparked the team on the attack, while Crandon, in spite of his lack of experience, put in a consistently good performance as goalie. However, in '39 and '40, dogged by the lack of experienced men, the teams of Bob XYelles and Nlark Costello fared badly, and wrestling was removed from the sports calendar. During 1941, mainly through the efforts of Captain XV1I1l11C Smith, wrestling was renewed and the term showed up splendidly in four matches. This year, coached and captained by Art Stemlcr, the team was fairly successful in six meets, winning one, tying two, and losing three. The Loomis Ski Club, composed of fifty regular skiers and twenty-five week- enders, was officially registered hy Mr. Britton in the Eastern Amateur Ski Association. The first ten men in slalom, downhill, and cross-country were to comprise the Ski Team itself. Rivalry for the squad was keen since the Athletic Council had agreed to award letters. Percy Hideout, coach of the Dartmouth skiers, spent an afternoon with the Club giving instruction in all phases of skiing. Unfortunately, there was an unprecedented lack of snow which led to the cancellation of all the scheduled meets and cut down on the normal skiing. Only one bus trip of any length was attempted, that to Snow Valley in lNlanchester, Vermont. However, time-trials were held on an abbreviated slalom course and rankings were determined. Southworth was top man, followed closely hy Pierpont, Captain Lintz, Rooney, Mavor, Brown, and Smith.
