S ccrctary Student government at Loomis is controlled by the Student Council, which is made up of 15 scniors and 10 juniors elected semi-annually by the school. Its functions are to supervise general activities and to consider any matters brought to its attention by the students. The council is aided by Senior Committees whose duties are to share the respon- sibility of discipline in thc school. This year the Scholastic and Advisory Committees insti- tuted the Study Club. The service of this organization is to provide extra help for those boys who are in scholastic diflzicultics. ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE James T. Dougherty, '42 ......,.,..,.....TTTT..,......................,A.,............ President Carlyle F. Barnes, '43 ...... ..,.,. V ice-President Each year a student endowment fund campaign run entirely by the students is hcld to aid in improving the facilities of the school. During ten years the different committees have accomplished so much that several improvements about the school are witnesses of their success. The Endowment Fund has financed the construction of the athletic Held known as Sellers Field, and the installation of permanent drains there. It has also built the tar road from the highway to the Cinder track and the drinking fountains on the athletic fields. A few years ago the Endowment Fund responded to the need for a place to present our school plays and built thc ncw theater. Last year the committee took advantage of the opportunity for enlargement in the plans of the theater and added a north wing con- taining dressing rooms and a lounge for the actors. This year thc committee paid for materials for exterior sheathing, weatherprooting, and interior partitions, and these improvements were carried out as one of our work projects. Iwi PUBLICATIONS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Knight Edwards, ,4I .7,,,7....,,..,,.....,,,,,,A,,,.,.7,...,.,..,,.,.,,,,,,.,,,II.,,,,.,.. President XVarcl B. Sanford, lil L , . Secreiary-Trcasfwer Every member of the faculty ancl stuclent hotly automatically becomes a member of the Loomis Publications Association. There is also a publications executive committee, which is composed of the editorial and financial managers, as well as the faculty advisers of the respective publications. This executive committee has the power to settle any differences which may arise between any of the various lmoarcls in regard to heelers, fees, and the distribution of the fees. In general, the executive committee promotes a greater ellieiency and solidarity among all the boards and their publications. The periodicals this year include the LOC, the LOOMISCELLANY, ancl the LOOMIS HANDBOOK. As this book goes to press we have not yet seen an issue of the LOOM, but We still maintain the hope that the literary achievements of the year I940-41 will not go unrecorded. The LOC is the weekly newspaper, the LOOBIISCELLANY is the school yearbook, and the HANDBOOK is, Hguratively speaking, the Loomis Bible , LOG Knight Edwards, ,41 ........ .................. ............,.,.... P r esident Ward B. Sanford, ,41 ......... ,....... B usiness Manager Mr. Crubbs ....,..,d,.A,..............,.,.......,.,.,..,,,...........,............... Faculty Adviser This year's Log Board, with Knight Edwards running the editorial end, and Ward Sanford handling the financial affairs, has done a splendid job. Four eight-page issues were put out to supplement the regular four-page issues throughout the year, one at the time of the Fall Dance, one at the end of the winter term and two in the spring term, at the Dance and at Commencement. As usual, the editorials were outstanding, not only the ones about school life, but also those that discussed events in the world today, no easy task in this epoch of swiftly moving events. This year, for the first time, there was no managing editor, this task being given to three editors, each of whom managed a specific department. This took the burden from one person and gave it to three, thereby achieving greater efficiency. 1 W 1 Y 'vu LOOIXIISCIQLLANY 13111111 11. 1i1'111111, 711 , ,Y,, ,.,.,,,,.. . . Money has been saved for the Creek Relief and Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for the needy families of Windsor. In February, two hundred and twenty-five dollars was raised and donated as Loomis's contribution for an ambulance to be given by the Connecticut preparatory schools for War relief in England. Gratifying was the response to the call for volunteers to direct activities at the Union Settlement House in Hartford. This was another phase of Iuntois varied program. DEBATINC Robert R. Secretary This year, in the absence of Mr. Dorman, debating throve under the able direction and coaching of Messrs. Batchclder, Sr., Hoskins, Fowles, and Batcheldcr, lr. For a part of the year the club presented Weekly debates in the chapel on affairs of current interest to foster enthusiasm for debating at Loomis. Thus the club members gained experience in preparing and presenting their material. The more able speakers were admitted into the Debating Council which engages in interscholastic debates. This year the Council had four meetings: with the Amherst Freshmen, Hotchkiss, Taft and Deerfield. The judges unanimously declared Loomis the victor over Taft and the team sent to Deerfield also won by a good margin. Altogether the Council enjoyed its most successful season since the organization of the club in 1939. Although only three members of the Council are returning next year, the club con- tains enough good material around which to build a successful 1942 team. POLITICAL CLUB Thaxter K. S ecretary-Treasurer Mr. Hoskins ....................................................,,.................... Faculty Adviser The Political Club, under the guidance of Mr. Hoskins, continued to extend its activi- ties this year. During the political campaign several open forums were held. The high- light of the season occurred when Loomis played host to the annual convention of the Secondary School Society for International Cooperation. At that time students of eleven schools held discussions here and heard a Brazilian native, Silvio Silva, and Dr. Bryce Wood of Columbia University. During the winter term ex-Congressman William Miller gave an illuminating account of the functions of Congress. Among other speakers were Reverend E. Dent Lackey of EnHeld, Charles Cook, an amateur politician, and several members of the faculty. Movies were shown by Dr. E. Myles Standish of Hartford, by the Highway Safety Commission, and several March of Time movies were presented. The annual trip to the Wethersiield State Prison, attendance at several Hartford Foreign Policy Association meetings, the Conference on Careers in Government at Yale, and three parties rounded out a busy season. S ecretary-Treasurer Mr. Mather ...,..................,.............,..................................... Faculty Adviser The Chess Club, under the guidance of Mr. Mather meets every Wednesday after- noon. The purpose of the club is to instruct novice members in the fundamentals of the game, and to provide the senior members with an opportunity to engage in more intricate strategy. The members of the club are rated on a ladder according to their ability, and the competition is keen because the five highest in the competition compose the Chess Team. With the entire squad returning from the previous year, the team lost only one match all year to Weaver High, and avenged this defeat in a return match. Mr. Mather is counting upon the return of his number one and number two players to form the nucleus of a successful club next year. Loomis 2 Weaver 3 Loomis 334 Weaver 134 Loomis 5 Wm. There has also been a fairly keen interest in photography, but for the most part, the promising exhibitors have deferred their efforts to the school publications. There was one exhibition in the fall and another in the late spring. Among the outstanding features of the progressive program of lectures and demon- trations, was the Mineral Exhibit, lent by the Wadsworth Atheneum, and set up and classified by the Mineral division of the club. The lecturers included such notables as Pro- fessor Van Dyke of Wesleyan, Iack Mitchel, Loomis l39, Mr. Daniel Broderick, and Johnnie Porter, with his superb studies of bird-lore. The traditional Carnival in the spring was the most successful in the club's history, clearing two hundred dollars, which was donated to the American Field Service. lv , IH . The assistance of Mrs. Savage and Mrs. Johnson has been invaluable in providing costumes. The Union has assisted in all the plays presented this year at Loomis, as well as aiding Chaffee School to present two one-act plays in the fall. Competition was held for Union membership both in the fall and in the winter. The most notable achievements of the Union were in presenting Uncle Tonfs Cabin and The Green Pastures, both plays with seventeen scene changes. A great deal of permanent progress was made by the Union this year. Through the kindness of Mrs. Arthur L. Shipman of Hartford, the Union acquired two banks of lights and eight spot-lights. Secretary-Treasurer The Athletic Council is composed of all captains, managers, coaches, the Headmaster, the Physical Director, and the Secretary-Treasurer. It has general supervision of the schoolis athletic policy, including the awarding of insignia, the appointment of managers, and the appropriation of funds. The Council is now considering a plan for the issuance of more uniforms without the costly item of shoes. With the growth of athletic activities, the council has become so large as to be unwieldy. An innovation has been made by appointing the Executive Committee with Mr. Pratt as chairman, and Messrs. Slader, Catlin, Maynard, Evenson, and the under- graduate president of the council. This committee reports its recommendations to the whole Council each term and in the interim handles all the necessary details. The next week, lacking spark in the first half, the Maroon team was unexpectedly downed by Taft, only to rise superbly to defeat Berkshire. The strong teams and greater ability of Kingswood and Deerfield upset the Maroon momentarily. Showing a brilliant running attack, the team turned in its best performance of the year on a muddy, rain-swept field against a highly-favored Hotchkiss eleven. The loss of triple-threat man Pete Vibert, injured in an early practice scrimmage, was keenly felt by the whole team. Throughout the season, the excellent offense and defense play of center George Barr, and the accurate punting of Steve Burton pulled the team out of many precarious situations. The team had only one letter-man to start with, Captain jack Terry, but new material strengthened the team considerably. Peter Vibert, playing for Loomis for the first time, had the keenest eye on the floor, and rolled up a consider- able number of baskets in each game. The closest contest of the year took place at Loomis against Pomfret. Pomfrct was leading by one point until the last two seconds of the game, when a Loomis player sunk a basket. Immediately after it a Pomfret man took a shot which rolled around the edge of the basket and fell away as the whistle blew. The finest playing of the season occurred in the game with Deerfield. Although Deerfield won by a good margin, the score was even at half-time. The shooting for Loomis was amazingly accurate, but the visitors were finally able to cover up and go on to win. The other victory was taken from Choate, playing a pure western styleb, but Loomis, using the Heastern stylev of set shots, took the game by a good margin. Coaches F avored by a winter of good skating, Loomis was able to finish its season with an auspicious record of seven victories against four defeats. Victories over Choate, VVest- minster, Cheshire and Taft rated Loomis among the top prep school teams in Connecticut. The flu epidemic which hit several star players was partly to blame for defeats by Pomfret and Westminster. The game with Deerfield, whose team was the victor over a strong Yale Freshman squad later in the season, was a close fought contest in which Deerfield emerged a 2 to 1 victor. Throughout the season the sparkling play of defensemen George Barr and Bill Eberle was outstanding, the performance of goalie Parker Butts was equally commend- able. Captain-elect Tyrol plus four returning lettermen promise a favorable season for 1942. Coach Despite the number of losses the team suffered, all the meets were so close that the season cannot be considered by any means a failure. In the Mount Hermon and Trinity matches the outcomes were not decided until the last bouts were over, but inexperience, bad breaks, and the loss of key men managed to keep victory just out of reach. The Suffield meet Was the only chance that the Wrestlers had to show their true worth, as they easily overcame the black and orange. The only other bright spot of the season was the fact that the three veterans, Crane, Stemler, and Captain Smith Went undefeated throughout all their bouts. Next year with a small nucleus of Captain-elect Stemler, and Dunbar Wagner, as Well as Holmes and Wleldon, the team should have more than a fair chance for a record season. With the fine coaching of Skip,' Batchelder and Al Grasson, the team, starting slowly, ended the season with four consecutive wins over Harvard, Andover, Hopkins and Yale. The foils team, led by joe Hubbard and ably seconded by Bob Purinton, paved the way for many of the victories of the team. The epee team, starting off well at Taft, slowed up in the four following meets, only to come back again in the last four, thus accounting for the majority of its bouts. This was due to a certain extent to Hubbard, who fenced epee as well as foil in the last four meets. In the sabre division Jim Cook was outstanding, winning the majority of his bouts in all the meets he fenced. Hubbard, who was fourth foil man in the state last year, came up to second place this year. With four letter men and most of the rest of the squad returning, the prospects for next yearis team are very good. C oach The second basketball team, under the efficient supervision of Mr. Whitehead, enjoyed a highly successful season. Its record, marred only by a two-point defeat, pays tribute to the brand of basketball which the fellows displayed throughout a difficult schedule. The squad, disheartened at first by the loss of mainstays Stiner and Abel, rallied behind Captain Flick Fletcher, who sparked them to decisive victories over West- minster and Pomfret. After dropping a heart-breaker to Wilbraham, the team returned to form and easily Won its encounters with Suffield and Kent. In the Williston game, Stiner, aided by such able ball handlers as Stewart, Collier, Abel, Richardson, and Rund- baken, took scoring honors. The team concluded its most successful season by beating Deerfield. With most of the veterans returning next year, prospects for the first and second basketball squads are bright. C 0 ach Skiing really came into its own during this its second year as an organized sport at Loomis. Led by Mr. Britton the Ski Club, composed of twenty-live regular and forty occasional skiers, made frequent trips to slopes in Connecticut and Massachusetts. This year, for the iirst time, there was a Loomis Ski Team. The team had two matches. The first, with Williston, was held at Mt. Tom and the Islanders bowed after a very close contest was decided in favor of the Williston team. In the second match, at Deeriield, the Loomis team again succumbed by a very small margin. The team also participated in the Connecticut State Championships where, out of a large field, Captain Butts took a second place in the slalom and the team as a whole took fourth place. The prospects for next year are promising, for while the team's sparkling nucleus of Butts, Sweetser, Eberle and Jencks will not be here, it will be replaced by a proficient group whose experience this year will have helped them no end. The team lost its opening game with Trinity Freshmen, hut recovered and pounded Suflield to the tune of 13-8. Loomis next lost to Taft in a very close thirteen inning game 6-5. The following contest with Kent was one of the most exciting of the season. It fea- tured six home runs, four of which were hy Loomis men. Month trips out on the light fantastic toe to the gay tunes of the Clee Club as those lucky dogs prepare for the Oxford Hesta. MAY The month swings in with Sambo Donahue, as that merry maestro is chosen for the spring dance. Burton defends himself with the sweeping statement He must be good- he's been with Krupaf' Someone screams that it's all a hoax, but the unfortunate is quickly squelehed. Mansur nauseates all his ehums with a horrible pun, the echoes of which reflect on Indiana. Mad dog Hollis completely loses his eyesight over gay weekend, and may be seen wandering blindly around the campus trying to see through his new glasses. Wandering nomads make first grand pilgrimage, to return hours late for check-in. Cleeful glee clubbers are completely subdued when scads of lr l l rl ,iv uk 2 x 4 F 5 .rjlggp si'k:f 5' ' f li lla smooth seniors attend the Oxford dance en masse. Marton is ostracized from floor after trying to lead a Conga to the strains of The Beautiful Blue Danube . Trainer meets the dream and immediately all the school writing paper disappears. Barr goes through his sixth baseball game hitless to the delight of all those who know he is a little astigma- tized. The printer is clamoring wildly for copy, the deadlines past, and your oracle can do little else save leave you with a few divinations of the month to come. latin Prophecy of Things to Come as Augured by Your Own Swami: The Spring Dance will be a great success complete with myriads of lovely girls, gallons of smooth music, and a moonlit night. Bloodgood will run out of that foul soap some bright day. Snerdo will junk Rubeis tinny trombone to the relief of everyone on the campus. The track records will be completely whitewashed if Burton fthe other onej, Newbold, Norige, and Terry keep up their ferocious pace. Pardee will join the Canadian Air Force. All the old grads will fail to show up Alumni Weekend. Mr. Burns will drag out those weird play suits once more. The underclassmen will rebel against their superiors and be swept ignominiously from the Senior path. Freeman and Ioe Quiz will be expelled by unanimous faculty vote after their return from racing weekend at Brown. The porches will be ripped down because of misuse and upperclassmen will sleep on the roofs next year. No senior will pass his finals and all will graduate through pure suck. There will be a gay farewell party as the seniors bid each other fond adieu. The crystal ball has shattered, no more can be said .... fi I 1 Sis s L5 Q . si V Y 2 r f s :Z .
