At midyears the number of the Council was increased by one boarder and one day pupil. Bob Earle regretfully resigned because of time lost through illness and the necessity of applying himself exclusively to his studies, thus causing changes in some other positions. Nevertheless, the spirit and eihciency of the Council was steadily maintained and reflected in a very happy year. Perhaps at no other school is there a larger measure of student government, and our faith in it grows with the years. 3.4 'Q ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE Dewitt C. Jones, 3rd, '40 ,,,, , . I'1'4'xiJ1'11f James T. Dougherty, '41 . X iu'-l'r'i'xi1ff'11i In the Spring of 1930, the idea of a student endowment fund campaign run entirely by students was conceived as a help in improving school facilities. llaeh year since the initial one, the ditferent committees have done such an excellent job in fulfilling their aim, that we now have numerous achievements about the school which have been brought about by their efforts. In ten years. the lfndowment Fund has financed the construction of what is now called Sellers Field, and the installation of permanent drains there. It has also been responsible for the fountains on the athletic fields and the tar road connecting the cinder track and the Tarvia. The Endowment Fund's latest and perhaps most noteworthy project has been the building of the new theatre. This, through necessity, was built small at first, leaving ample opportunity for improvement and enlargement. As a result of this need, the Endowment Fund this year again devoted its attention to the theatre, constructing a large north wing which contains the badly needed dressing rooms and lounge for the actors. A slightly increased auditorium with a projection booth, and a lobby with COLII rooms seem next in order. The work of the Committee since its inception is a great demonstration of loyalty and efiiciency. 5: . i 4...-.sf .Meehan-H 9 PUBLICATIONS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Thomas S. Brush, jr. All told, thirty- one issues were put out, including eight page editions at the Fall Dance, the end of the winter term, the Spring Dance, and graduation. Three heeler contests were held, one in every term, and each resulted in the addition of several promising newshawks to the board. As a break in the journalistic monotony of the long Fall term, the Log published a distinctive novelty issue, an extra so to speak, announcing the abolition of the Christmas vacation. Packed with burlesque humor, the issue afforded extreme amusement to editors, student body, and faculty alike. Especially good this year were the editorials, staunch defenders of Loomis ideals and privileges. In the October rating of the Princetonian Association, Loomisis editorials ranked second out of a Held of twenty prominent schools. The advertising was handled well and several striking ads were obtained, includ- ing a series of instructive one page advertisements from Time Magazine. 1 Y fi 1 LOOMISCELLANY George F. Starting the season with the annual Christmas sing, the club progressed rapidly. The winter term was enhanced by a concert and dance with the Wykellam Rise School for girls in Washington, Conn. The extensive rehearsals that preceded the Bushnell Concert with Decrheld, Choate, Hotchkiss, and Taft enabled the Loomis Club to give a magnificent performance. Following on the heels of the Bushnell Con- cert came engagements with two girls, schools, St. Margaret's, and Oxford. The Glee Club also rendered aid in the presentation of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, The Sorcerer. Most of the leading parts of the opera were Hlled by members of the Club. The program that was given at Commencement ended a splendid year. One of the outstanding facts of the year was the singing of Mr. Cardis setting of Julia Ward Howeis Battle Hymn. This song was the first composition of a director to be sung at the Bushnell Concert. Much praise should be given to the various soloists, Bachem, de MaCarty, and Tenney. All told the Glee Club had one of its better years. 2 22' . ,V y Q-QF , ag? 'n , 1 1, 5 I Q-I3 J? I -Q V . .lo S T11 --1-,, a F A C- 1 'Q We T 1:- 1 , J 1 Q R' .....-. 1 o xl I Q 1 Q ,, . The response was most gratifying, and the one thousand dollars pledged was distributed to some twenty different charitable causes. Junto meetings were held from time to time on Sunday nights and the services of the Reverend Donald Dorchester, the Reverend Theodore Frank, and the Reverend Howard Dunn, Windsor ministers, were procured for daily chapel services in the fall, winter, and spring terms respectively for periods of one week each. Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets Were distributed to the needy families of Windsor and vicinity as usual, the cost being absorbed by giving sacrihce meals at lunch from time to time. The thirty- two members of the club presented weekly debates in the chapel throughout the year. After the talks were finished, open forums were held, during which each member was given the opportunity to voice his opinion on the question. In this way, members acquired both experience and pleasure. The more talented speakers were admitted into the Debating Council, which engaged in outside debates. This year, the club scheduled five meetings with Taft, Mount Holyoke, Hotchkiss, Chaffee and Deerheld. Unfortunately, Taft and Hotchkiss were obliged to cancel their engagements but the remaining three were interesting. Almost all of this year's Council were untried, but all per- formed admirably. In addition to its regular activities, the club sponsored talks on the inter- national situation by members of the Debating Council in order to foster en- thusiasm for debating at Loomis. Next year all but two of the Council will return and the majority of the club also, so hopes are high that the season will be even more successful. - L POLITICAL CL U B Thaxter Swan, '-+1 .. . . Members of the Political Club were conducted through the XVelherslield State Prison, and learned about the methods employed in the treat- ment of criminals. Faculty Adviser The Chess Club, directed by Mr. Mather, is an organization of all those who want to play the game or to learn how. The club meets every Wednesday after- noon, when Mr. Mather teaches both the rudiments and finer points. To foster competition, there is a chess ladder which rates the members according to prowess. Throughout the year boys strive to be one of the Hve highest ranked players, since these constitute the Chess Team. An extraordinary amount of this competition was held this year, because all of last year,s team graduated. In spite of inexperience, the team managed to win or tie all but one of its outside matches. The highlight of the season was the victory over Deerfield Academy in a return encounter after the first match had been drawn. With all members of the Chess Team returning to school, and a great many underclassmen interested in the game, hopes are high that next year will be both an active and a successful one. During the months of September and October the Union held a competition for heelers to fill the few vacancies left by graduation. The heelers did work for the fall play, scenes from Richard II. For the annual faculty play, The Privclfe Secretary, it built a set of flats which the New Theatre had needed very much. Stage hardware was purchased this year, and first used in Om' Town, the winter play produced by Chaffee and Loomis. The Union's outstanding achievements of the year were the creation of the many difficult lighting effects necessary for Om' Town, and the making of the sinking trapdoor used in the spring show, The Sorcerer. Crmc'ln's In the season's opener, outplayed by Westminster through the line, the Maroon scored early on a blocked kick and held on to its precarious lead until the Hnal whistle. Seven days later at Watertown the team proved to have ac- quired valuable experience along with added strength in the line. Led by Vibert and Carey the Islanders defeated Taft, and the next week ran roughshod over Berkshire in the first home game. Against Kingswood the undefeated Loomis team tasted its Hrst loss, rising too late to overcome the lead piled up by the surprised underdogs in the first half. The team next met Hotchkiss and fell to a stronger team after a hard struggle, victim of one of the finest aerial attacks ever seen on a Loomis gridiron. Coach Coached by Mr. Maynard, an advocate of the eastern style , the basket- ball teamis play was characterized by many set shots and a definite system of attack. No one player was outstanding, but as a unit the five showed streaks of play that rivalled that of the great team of the previous year. Although Mr. Maynard made few changes in his team, he had always at his disposal a reliable group of substitutes, some of whom will undoubtedly see regular action next year. After a slow start in which they bowed to Morse College, defeated West- minster, and then lost to Suffield and Taft respectively, the quintet picked up and decisively won from Pomfret, Wilbraham, and Berkshire. Choate's superior team then handed Loomis its only drubbing of the year, and Loomis responded with three sparkling victories over Hopkins, Kingswood, and Kent. The team reached its peak against Williston's crack squad even while losing, but in the final game fell Hve points short of beating its traditional rival, Deerfield. Q again ostracized from XVarl1am society. Mr. Pratt's jokes aren't quite up to scratch this year at the Athletic Dinner. Siddy Davis, the Durrtie Oirishman, to prove his qualifications as a weight-lifter, heaves Martin Singer's trunk down three flights of stairs. Singer says he wouldn't have minded so much except that he had packed his glasses in it. After every soul on the campus has been probed and has Q'Told All , the LOG snags Mr. Norris and gives him a hot-foot when he won't admit that the forthcoming Darwin Club Carnival is all a tremendous hoax. The new and generally unheard of Ping-Pong Team, paddles its way to its 'first victory. Ryan suggests starting a Poker Team, but hasn't got the nerve to bring it up in school meeting. A timely vacation puts an end to the sorrows of the winter term, and the school heads south, with the exception of Sweetser, who heads anywhere there's snow. APRIL Darwin Club Carnival is successfully run off with incalculable profits as boys return flush with money from vacation. Some unthinking booth tender lets Milton Brown win a water pistol and Warham pays for his folly. Visitors to the Founders' Third puppet show are intrigued by the antics of a chicken that makes long, if Wingless, flights about the stage. Filley concludes spring is here when he sees a crested fly-catcher flitting across the campus. Bettman runs for his shotgun. Warhilm boys rush around breaking windows and burning matches, to view the big eclipse. Jeep Dickinson trots out his new sextant and is prac- tically blinded by the glare, His barometer gets spring fever and starts writing little messages. Britton orders two hundred assorted chicken and vermin and houses the little stinkers in the biology lab. Faulkner and DeChiara rush up every night and ring bells trying to make them drool, while everything is psychology around Loomis. Britton snickers and sharpens up the old carving knife. Nash and Clark start putting beds together out of scraps so they can sleep out on the porch. Faculty tells the census taker they are technically unemployed, according to Mr. Fowles. John Faulkner has trouble with a cow on green number six at the golf course. Cousin John played out of the stymie with a pretty 8 iron shot but got stuck in a footprint. Flood waters begin to rise, but subside together with student hopes of vacation. A generous student body manages to scrape S245 together for the largest Red Cross contribution so far. XVith the very successful Glee Club concert at Bushnell, someone suggests draft- ing Mr. Grubbs to the ranks as they say he can be heard all the way across the chapel on Onward Christian Soldiers . Marty Johnson tries getting in an hour late from a night per with the good old daylight saving time excuse. MAY As May opens, all thoughts turn toward the coming dance. DeChiara having tried six times to get a girl, quits in desperation, realizing that his last bank statement read 53.13. Fveryone is mystified by a sudden multiplication of soprano voices around school. The Kenney Emporium which has been out of the news during a brief change of hands hits the headlines once more as it returns se-wal ,..,--..4' --5 L I, m if ALAQSS 4' to its original owner, the only difference being in the water content of some of the ingredients. Cousin John Faulkner, aroused by the Endings of Davis and Costello in the field of hypnotism, puts Thompson into .1 deep slumber quite by accident, the only difhculty being in waking the subject up, which requires some rather strenuous exercises with a hammer. The trap shooting club becomes quite disconcerted during one Sunday morning session when a crow flies over- head. Bettman misses the pigeon but gets the l'UI'!7t'llIL neatly between the eyes. XVarham has a chicken fry. Flood Waters really rising. Dickinson's barometer continues to prophesy sunny weather. Flood waters still rising. Mr. Norris sends out a dove which fails to return, a good sign. NVaters abate, much to the relief of an anxious ball team. Eve of the dance sees furious preparations in progress to decorate the gym. The big week-end arrives. The Sorcerer' draws a packed house two nights running and Bobby Byrne gives everything. P. S. A little behind schedule, but just as lovable as ever, our little winged pals, the mosquitoes pay their annual call along with the alumni. John Faulkner hits the headlines again when he finds a colorful mould of Chocolate Blancmange in his bed. lilliot refuses to return home without an alleged two-foot carp which occupies one of the neighboring sloughs. Pretty Boy Burns looks charming around the campus in a play-suit of Lincoln green muslin. In a last desperate attempt for recognition, the Junior Class starts a path raid in which half the Senior Class easily subdues them, with considerable loss of temper, pants, and breath on both sides.
