Purinton, ,39 .. . .. Vice President George L. Austin, jr., ,39 , . Secretary-Treasurer Again this year the Student Council ably tool: over the job of school govern- ment. The Council is made up of twenty-three juniors and seniors elected semi- annually by the student body. It supervises student activities, and the general tone of school life is in the hands of its members. This year the theory of the senior committee, that is to have the senior class share in the responsibility of discipline in the school and to aid the council in its various tasks, has formally been put into practice. Every senior is a member of one of the various committees. For example, there is a committee responsible for conduct in the Dining Hall, while another is re- sponsible for the appearance of the grounds in the vicinity of the quadrangle. Every senior, therefore, has some share in the running of the school, thus giving him a greater sense of maturity. Very few schools have self-government, a system for which we should be grateful. Since its formation the Council has commendably carried out the duties entrusted to it. 'Sf if Y' ...f... ,., . W 1 64 , . 315 . . Q 'M' sz , V f+ v-74 ' 5' 3 . E - ww' Z . This organization includes the LOG, The LOOMISCELLANY, the HANDBOOK, the LOOM. and the Press Club. The Board consists of the executives of the respective organizations. The officers of the Board are annually elected by the student body. The function of the Board is to coordinate the various publications. It has a general supervision over all boards and heelership competitions. It may transfer members of one board to another. It determines the fee that is paid by the members of the association and determines the allotment to each of the various boards. The Log under the able leadeship of Charles Knickerbocker passed a very successful year. The Yearbook with Alfred Green as its head speaks for itself. The Loom, the Loomis literary magazine published several times a year had Thomas Brush for its president. The Handbook was under the leadership of Richard Morse, while the Press Club was headed by John Bullitt. . t - 4, ,,,-..-1 ....., x 1- ' ' - - -sc-.,, 51-' --5, ' W - ,L Af- -fg'::..':..'-f 2- ' THE LOG Charles H. Faculty Adviser The Stagehands' Union started its year with the formation of an executive committee to share the responsibilities of Loomis productions. The officers were as follows: Meigs and A. In mid winter the membership became unwieldly, and it was voted to limit full members to thirty and to keep the overflow on a waiting list to be added at the end of this year. The Union has much to be grateful for. It has had a subsidy from the school for each major production. Its attempt to build up a permanent collection of cos- tumes has been made possible through gifts from parents, and by the needlework of faculty wives and Mrs. Sieber, who supplied costumes for Henry IV, Part I, Anclrocler and the Lion. and Trial by jury. The Union also had the cooperation of Mr. Low and the art classes in the painting of the sets for Under tlve Gaslight. Then there is the new Loomis Theater, which starts a new era for the Union. With the advantages of space and new equipment, the Union hopes to become more efficient and to give better training in the production and management of plays. In the fall there was a large turnout for the Club, followed by the custo- mary preliminaries and tryouts. The first public appearance of the organization was in the singing of carols on Founders Terrace, on the last school Sunday before Christmas. In the winter the Club sang for the Vifindsor Xvomenis Club. The next function was a concert held jointly with the Oxford School, after which there was a dance for the members of the two organizations. The major performance of the year was the annual concert at Bushnell Memorial with the Clubs from Choate. Deerfield, Hotchkiss, and Taft. The Loomis Club rendered its unusually difhcult numbers in very line style. The following week the Glee Club journeyed to Vllater- bury, Connecticut. for a recital and dance with St. lVlargaret's School, following the custom of previous years. DEBATING David H. Fnnals, '39 , . . ,, President Wfilliam XV. Keller, ,39 ,, , ,, ,, . , Vice President Charles H. Knickerbocker, '39 .,,,.,,, A .,,,., ,. . ,r,.,.,....,,, Secretary This year. for the first time. debating was organized on a large scale. Mr. Dorman founded the Debating Club, in which membership is open to any boy interested in debating, and willing to do his part in supporting the club. Early in the year. the club's president, Dave Ennals, together with Nlr. Dorman and the inner council, which consists of all boys who have talcen part in interscholastic debating the year before, drew up a constitution which governed the activities of the club. It also stated that the legislative body of the club was to consist of all members with enough talent and proficiency for interscholastic debating. Throughout the year. weekly meetings were held. at which several members would hold a debate on some worthwhile topic. ln this way. every member of the club was able to obtain some experience in the held of debating. The club consisted of twenty-five members: and each member took part in three debates during the school year. In addition to this weelcly series, interscholastic debates were staged with Chaffee, Deerfield. and Hotchkiss. Plans for an elaborate program next year are already under way. and the coming season promises to be even more interesting than this year. gs. . . POLITICAL CLUB William W. Keffer, ,39 .,,A, Y.,. P resident Holden Hayden, '39 ..,.,.,,L,. ,L.. S ecretary Andrew G. Wfhiteside, ,39 .,,, . . ,,LA Secretary As for the past few years, the Political Club again provided an excellent means of getting together all boys interested in current events. The club contained about fifteen membersg and weel-:ly meetings were held. At these meetings, the customary procedure was to have different club members give speeches on some current event or political issue. At several meetings, however, different masters spoke, much to the delight of the club. Perhaps the most interesting speech of the season was that given by a German refugee. who explained to the club exactly what the present conditions in Germany are. During the course of the year, the club made two worth- while and interesting trips, one to the State Capitol in Hartford, to hear the state legislature in sessiong and the other to the State Penitentiary in Wethersneld, where the officials showed them through the prison, and explained how the institution functioned. As a climax to this most successful season, a joint meeting between the political clubs of Loomis and Chaffee was held. 1 'S AJ. . ' CHESS CLUB James V. Stacy, '39 Provident Paul F. Young, ,39 Secretary-Yirctzvurer Mr. Nlather . Faculty flti1'ifL'T The Chess Club, still under the able guidance of Nlr. Matlier, enjoyed another successful season. The club consisted of about twenty-five boys, who wished either to have the opportunity to play chess. or to learn how. Throughout the year, meetings were held on Xvednesday afternoons. at which hir. hlather explained the finer points of the game to the more advanced players. and the rudiments to the beginners. Also. the club held a ladder tournament. in which all members had a chance to talce part. This tournament served the purpose not only of providing suitable matches for the members, but also of determining the most skilful players for the interscholastic matches. The Chess Team. coached by Mr. hlather. did very well. beating Deerfield twice by the score of 4-1. The most gratifying match of the season. however. was the victory over XVC-ayer High. which was last yearis junior state champion. The one defeat at the hands of Bassiclc High was more than overshadowed by the large number of victories. Wvith more and more boys turning out each year, the club hopes to have as good a season next year. and to malce an equally good record in the interscholastic matches. The hurricane of early fall provided the club with a great problem-that of clear- ing the totally ruined stand of pines at the plantation. The school finally decided to sell the timber on the tract to a lumbering concern. The spring plantation group. greatly enlarged over that of previous years, was thus provided with the taslc of clearing and replanting the several acres of brushland left after the removal of the timber. The photographic division of the club sponsored two contests for the school7s camera fans, the last of these in conjunction with the annual carnival. Easv victories over Cheshire and Kingswood partially avenged the narrow lcsses of the first two games. In a well-plaved contest with Pomfret the opponents won hx a single goal margin. Two overwhelming victories and a second hearthrealcing de- feat hx' XY'estminster completed the season. Gratifving was the 5-ll defeat of traditional rival Deerheld. The plav of co- captains Rogers and Cumming was outstanding. A hoclcev reorganization hv compe- tent coaches Johnson and Savage promises good teams for the future. Tenney, 140 iwanager Mr. Kaminslcy , Coach Led by Captain Wfelles, a four year veteran, and built around a nucleus of four letter-men. the Loomis Xvrestling Team bade fair to equal the line record of last yearys team. The first match was won when the team defeated the Suflield grapplers 20-13. However, sickness and the permanent loss of two heavyweights weakened the team and it lost to five of its major rivals after again defeating Sufheld. Nevertheless. the team was better than its record indicates for each meet was closely contested against very strong opposition. Prospects for next year's team are bright since Coach Kaminslcy has a wealth of rugged material in the new group of wrestlers which he has developed this year. Early victories over Berkshire, Taft, Cheshire and Kent started the team off to a good season, and the strong squad of fifteen was justifiably optimistic when this went to press. Captain O'Malley was an inspiring leader, a resourceful pitcher and one of the best batters. Lyman Ogilby completed one of the best batteries in our experience. From the start the inheld was tight and competent and the outfield able. At first it was feared that the batting would not be up to the other departments of the team, but ability to hit at opportune times developed early. Much credit goes to Nlr. Catlin for forming a strong team from the four returning lettermen and the boys he developed last year on the second team. Pros- pects for next year are excellent with a number of players returning, and Mr. Nlaynard coaching 'tcomersv on the second team. Southpaw Larry Austin served as captain for his second successive year, and the team was more than fortunate to have such an excellent player. Austin and Collier. number two man. are almost certain to cap- ture a great majority of their matches, and together they form a strong doubles duo. Gard Soule, the returning man, was elected captain and manager of the team early in the year and played number three position in the matches. Ario Pardee, a member of Hill Schoo1's 1938 team, was number one man, and Ed Hoffman, a junior club champion from Greenwich, was number two. Scotty Duncan was usually in number four position, while Kopf, Dougherty, Morris, Faulkner, Prendergast, and Forsyth were reserves. The team had the handicap of playing the majority of its matches away. The regular foursome was used in six of the matches, while a six man team tackled Hotchkiss and Williams. When this was written the team had played only three of its matches, but it emerged victorious from two of them. The season opened with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Amherst Freshmen, but the squad went on and defeated Suffield easily, 5-1, and a week later Yvilliston fell, 61 Q-21 The hopes for victories over the Trinity Freshmen, Hotchkiss, and Cheshire are very high. and if the team can manage to defeat Taft and Choate, it will close its season well on the winning side.
