Students begin with a new schedule, perfect attendance and a clean locker. Before long the days turn into routine and everyone lives for Fridays. During the winter, basketball games and snow days are foremost in students minds. Christmas break never lasts long enough and finals hit too soon after. The second semester is filled with springtime activities and unbelievably one more year is dismissed for summer. Somewhere between Labor Day and Commencement moments were made that shall never be forgotten. Since we can’t go back into the past nor stop the hands of time, only the memories that are stored within us can go on with us into the future. This year’s Lion Legacy has been made with these thoughts in mind. Although a whole year of memories can’t be placed in one book, hopefully, the highlights have been captured and can help to restore other moments as well. Remember the past, look to the future and live the present. MAKE THE MOMENTS LAST! Senior Terri Baugh shows off her newly acquired senior shirt. Student council members, Dena Davis and Mindy Matheis presented the mothers a rose. Senior class officers displayed the senior board at that time. The Lionettes performed to “She’s a Little Runaway’’ at half time and the senior members of the squad were featured. Following the game, the class of ’89 sponsored a dance. Having these four young people attend LHS was a very educational and enjoyable experience for the student body. Angela, Rodrigo, Christin and Stefan leave with us many wonderful memories. 16 Moments to Remember Some of the fondest memories of the Class of 1988 were the times that we discovered important parts of ourselves and experienced new emotions. We learned responsibility — to make a commitment and keep it, no matter how much time and dedication it required. At times we were worn down, but we always struggled to keep a constant pace. For some it was music or club activities. For others, it was a sport or two. Participants discovered a nonstop will that kept us going in a positive direction. We practiced whenever and wherever possible — always moving forward. The mental concentration and physical abuse reached new heights. We as seniors were all striving for similar personal goals. There were others of us, of course, who chose to be less involved in school. We were the ones who played the part of the dedicated employees. We worked long hours, received slave pay; but, nevertheless, we had a good time. Still there were times when no one could be catagorized. The times were those when we all gathered for a celebration, for a special picture, or for the lack of anything better to do. On occasions like this, we learned about each other; we grew together and made memories. But all good things must come to an end. Here is where we say our farewells, the Class of 1988. Pictured top to bottom. Senior class officers are: Mindy Matheis, president; Julie Anderson, vice president; Kristi Arvin. secretary; Robert Poehlein. treasurer. Just ask Mrs. Arnett, the production staff, or any cast member in Loogootee High School’s presentation of Bye Bye Birdie. From the day of auditions until the first performance many tasks such as building sets, selling tickets, memorizing lines, practicing music, and finding costumes filled many hours for all those participating in the musical. Bye Bye Birdie opened to the public on April 28, 29, and 30 at 8:00 p.m. The cast also held a performance for elementary students on Wednesday afternoon. This two act musical was the story of a music writer’s dream of fame and fortune. His dream was almost dissolved when his young star is drafted to the army until he writes a goodbye song, “One Last Kiss. A special thanks goes to all who helped make the musical possible. Debbie Truelove assisted with the tickets and publicity along with helping cast members like Wendy Summers look their best on stage. Leah Parsons and Krista Summers were the accompanists for all the musical numbers. Conrad Birdie. Courtney Veilleux, singing Honestly Sincere along with his fans and managers at Penn Station. 45 Beware Prince Charles Princess Di “I Won’t Forget You.” All the juniors, seniors and underclassmen who attended the 1987-88 Junior-Senior Prom will probably always remember May 14, 1988 for one reason or another. Following the grand march, the couples traveled to the Crane Officer’s Club for an evening of dining and dancing. Music was provided by WRTB. After being prim and proper for an evening, everyone hurried home to change into jeans and jams for post prom where all played games and had a chance to win neat prizes like the 13 color television won by Jay Henninger. Cosmetology classes were held in Washington and attended by seniors Misty Kerns, Teresa Holloway, and Kim Ziegler and juniors Treshia Cannon, Kim Tinkle and Stacy Wininger. Juniors, Byron Hoffman and Phil Todd participated in the Agriculture program at Barr-Reeve. Health Occupations allowed students to learn entry level skills in the field of health care. Chris Draper, Kevin Hembree, Chris Like, Amy Spencer and Tracie Thompson gained experience in area hospitals and nursing homes. Auto Mechanics training provided hands on experience for Rob Young, Jim Woody, and Scott Arvin. Home repairs will be simple chores for Gary Love and Dave Horning after assisting in the construction of a two-story home. Tearing into the engine of a car are Scott Arvin and Jim Woody. Auto mechanics was offered at Washington. Checking the blood pressure of a “dummy” was just one of the first steps in training the Health Occupation students to care for ill people. Tracie Thompson. Amy Spencer. Chris Draper. Kevin Hembree, and Chris Like work in the classroom as well as health care agencies. Gary Love and Dave Horning spent part of their senior year helping construct a home on Washington’s Dogwood Drive. 49 Good Help Is Hard to Find but the principal’s office has a wealth of good help! The student office workers’ jobs are to answer phones, pick up attendance, run errands, sell school supplies, type bulletins, serve as receptionists and do numerous other tasks. It would not be humanly possible to operate the principal’s office without the assistance of volunteer students. Jennifer David takes a message. 50 Legacy Writers The whole staff worked together to get the job done. Making the Moments Last was chosen as the theme of the ’88 yearbook. Many new ideas and improvements were made in the yearbook in several areas. Over $5,000 was raised by the staff through advertising sales. Photographers did very well in learning to meet the needs of other staff members. “It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed the whole year,” said Patricia Wilson, editor. They did nine halftime shows, both boys and girls games, using many different costumes and props. In addition, they competed in the Evansville Ace-ette Clinic, marched in the Christmas parade, hosted a dance clinic for Loogootee girls, and performed routines and skits for the tournament pep rallies. Captains, Talicia Combess and Angie Walker, did an outstanding job of guiding the group in its many activities this year. Mr. Craig Grow, sponsor, and the FCA officers organized several interesting activities for the club to take part in. A free throw a-thon was held to raise money for the cancer society. Many members enjoyed traveling to see the Christian rock group Petra in concert. Elementary students were treated to a Christmas party. The boys basketball team volunteered to have their feet in a sweet feet competition; it was a very successful fund raiser for FCA. Some club members visited Indiana University on FCA Day, April 17, 1988. A pop bottle drive was also held in the spring to help cover the costs of FCA conferences. FCA usually met once a month during the school year to conduct meetings and to have a great deal of fun. The club is open to any one who would like to become a member, whether an athlete or not. “Happy Valentine’s Day to You Stefan.’’ in FCA President. Mike Sumner’s own version. Sponsoring a child from Ecuador with financial contributions from the student body and corresponding with him was a new project for the group. Placing an entry in the Loogootee Christmas Parade and providing activities and refreshments for students during final exam week were also new projects for the year. The council continued with an exchange program involving Bloomington, Vincennes Lincoln and Washington High Schools. Christmas decorations added to the spirit of the season and were appreciated by the students. The traditional Homecoming activities were also the responsibility of the LHS student council as well as the spring academic awards program. A party hosted by the sponsors was the final fling for the group. The student council entered its float in the Loogootee Christmas Parade. One more class has graduated, while another has survived its freshmen blues. The sophomores fell into the routine of high school, and the juniors began to feel a little superior to the underclassmen. As a student body we have left our mark during 1988. We gave the time and effort needed to make this year a successful one. Although our individual goals were different, we could all pull together for club fund raisers. Prom and other social events, and cheering on our home teams. The new shining trophies and academic awards stand as proof of our accomplishments. Though we continue to move forward, our contributions to LHS are left behind to become one more important part of our school’s legacy. Being able to look back to 1988 with pride and saying, “I remember when ...” is one way we can make the moments we shared together at LHS, last throughout our lifetimes. 1988
