MOX LEGACY Loogoootee High School Loogootee High School Loogootee, IN 47553 201 Brooks Avenue Volume XV 1983 1984 Dr. Joe Woods, Superintendent of Loogootee Schools. Title Page 1 CELEBRATE!!! Celebrations are a key part of everyone's life. From his first celebration to his last, a person's life is often spent either in a celebration or in anticipation of one. A celebration is something that almost everyone at Loogootee High School can relate to. Students can be heard begging teachers for a party in class. Foreign language classes have fetes and fiestas as part of learning French and Spanish culture. And who can forget that ever-popular line: Hey dude, let's party!!! One reason for rejoicing was the addition of computer classes to the curriculum. This was a big step towards preparing students for an increasingly technological future. Another reason for celebration was Coach Jack Butcher's 500th career victory. In an exciting game against Barr Reeve, the Lions came out on top for one of the highlights of 1984. This year was definitely one for celebrations, and this year's students were great celebraters! Sammi Bateman having a good time in school. The Senior Board was also presented. The Loogootee Lionettes, featuring the Senior Lionettes, performed to Far From Over during half time of the varsity game. Following the game, a dance was held at St. John's Gym. Tameless , a group containing four Senior guys and Ruff Justice provided the music for the Senior Night Dance. Graduation - a time for celebration and a time for tears. Senior Week was a rowdy one, as usual. The pre-graduation parties obviously took their toll on many students who appeared to barely make it through their morning classes. The inevitable fireworks at noon hour also spiced up the week. And graduation morning, when the students showed up for practice, it was obvious that many of them hadn't seen home for a long time. Everyone was excited. Vet when the moment came at last, it was a quiet and subdued group that walked up to receive their diplomas. When it was over, some students cried, some of them cheered, and several breathed a sigh of relief. It was a good feeling to have a diploma and realize all that work was worth it. Vet it was kind of sad to realize that once graduation was over, there were people we would never see again. Also, a lot of people expressed anxiety about the future. There is one small postcript that needs to be added to complete the story of graduation. The juniors couldn't even wait until graduation to proclaim themselves Seniors. A large number of them showed up at school that day proudly sporting shirts saying SENIOR”. And so it starts all over again. Understanding Responsibility Enthusiasm Class Treasurer David Haag speaks on understanding Co-Valedictorian Craig Ledgerwood speaks on responsibility. She was a cheerleader in fifth grade and is missed by all of her friends. Sarah Hedrick, one of her best friends, had this to say about her: Sandy was a very attractive person with a wonderful personality. She will always be in our hearts and minds. Sandy remains in the thoughts of the class of 1984 after six years and is missed now as much as ever. I know what the future hath Of marvel or surprise; Assured alone that life and death His mercy underlies And if my heart and flesh are weak To bear an untried pain, The bruised reed He will not break, But strengthen and sustain. Ricky Dean Ochs January 1, 1966—September 17, 1982 Rick Ochs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Ochs, died at the beginning of his junior year. His death was an unexpected and painful one to the class of 1984. Rick participated in basketball until his eighth grade year and then participated in intramural basketball in high school. He was an outgoing person and very easy to get along with. Not only is he missed by our class, but also by many other underclassmen and people who were ahead of him in high school, for he did not limit his friends to those in his own class. And so, beside the silent sea, I wait the muffled oar; No harm from Him can come to me On ocean or on shore. I know not where His islands lift Their fronded palms in air; I only know I cannot drift Beyond His love and care ... Dedication 17 ACrvin Arvin ACrvin TfJ. (below left) Student Council President Craig Ledgerwood crowns Karmen as Homecoming Queen 24 Homecoming Five lovely young ladies waited anxiously to see which one would be given the honor of being the Loogootee High School 1983 Homecoming Queen. The five elected by the senior class as candidates were: Jodi Sims, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sims, escorted by Wayne Ritchey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ritchey; Amy Patterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Patterson, escorted by Charlie Blackwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Blackwell; Karmen Bratton, daughter of Nancy Allen and Frank Bratton, escorted by Tim Wagler son of Mr. and Mrs. Merv Wagler; Tammy Wenzel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loran Harding, escorted by Kelly Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hunt; Carol Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jones, escorted by Ed Harder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harder. The Senior Class voted for five girls out of all of the girls in their class. All students in every grade were allowed to vote in the final election which decided who would become the queen. Student Council President, Craig Ledgerwood, crowned the queen. His assistants were Angela Walton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Walton, and Jay Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Martin. Finally the big moment arrived. Karmen Bratton was crowned before a very anxious student body. Karmen was given a dozen red roses and a beautiful crown. Following the queen crowning, the Loogootee Lions defeated the North East Dubois Jeeps in a very exciting game. It was Coach Jack Butcher's 499th victory. The Homecoming Dance was held at the St. John Gym with Trilogy providing the music. (left) Tammy, lodi. Amy, Carol, and Karmen don't seem to be showing any pre-ceremony nerves. However there are certain people that seem to have special characteristics that only few possess. After receiving our driver's license during our sophomore year it soon became evident that two people had to be avoided more than anyone else—Roberta and Jason! Kara and Tim always seem to be dressed better than the ordinary student as one could tell by Tim's nickname, Mr. Fashion. David and Kathleen seemed to be two people who just couldn't resist breaking rule 3. Whenever a teacher found out he had Doug or Christine in class, he was sure to stock his drawer with plenty of aspirins, alka-seltzer, and erasers (for ammunition). Shannon and Craig are two very specially talented people who have made it through these four years better than the rest of us! Then we have the Senior Class Bods—Karmen and Jim. These two always seem to have a long line of admirers follow- ing them. Every class has two seniors who rise and fall with the moon!! Tim and Dana can always be found asleep in class, worn out from the night before. Amy and Charlie are the athletes of the class. They have put in many agonizing hours of practice and have eaten many a Wheatie. We the Senior year- book staff congratulate you for your fine achievements. Some of the most exciting happenings during our great sophomore year were turning sixteen, get- ting our licenses, having the chili supper, and just having great times being around each other, growing together, and learning more about life. This year was the advent of two new computer classes for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Computer Literacy was a 9- week required course for sophomores, and Computer Programming was offered for juniors and seniors and was one semester. Both classes went over well, Academics according to the students. Mr. Weitkamp and Mrs. johnson taught these classes and did a fine job. Another new class introduced this year was Career Education. Taught by Mr. Crow, the students were given an opportunity to explore opportunities and options available to people once they are out of high school. The students learned how to make out resumes, fill out job applications, and learned about various types of jobs Several new teachers were added to the staff this year. Bob Bell was added in the Business Program, julie Floyd was hired to teach English, and Rick Craves was hired to teach Art. Of course Ronald Reagan had little competition in the Republican race, but the Democratic ticket was full of competition this year. Walter Mondale, former Vice-President, was the strongest contender from the beginning. Senator john Glenn, D-Ohio, was, at the start, considered to be Mondale's strongest competitor. Eventually, however, he didn't do as well as everyone thought he would, and he dropped out early in the race, jesse lackson, the only black contestant, easily won black ma- jorities in most major cities and also easily took Washington, D.C. Senator Gary Hart, D-Colorado, has, to this point, proven to be Mondale's stiffest competition, winning in many major upsets. There were several others who were on the Democratic ticket, but were never considered to be in serious contention and dropped out of the race early. This year's election could prove to be a close one, and with the way it's gone so far, who knows who will win? Mr Terry Master Computer FEVEf 5trihES L.H.5. Chris Huelsman trying to deep her a computer program At the end of the 1982-1983 school year, L.H.S. acquired some new computers. With these, life was simplified for some and created more work for others. Mrs. Flick, Mrs. Armstrong, and the Business Lab are enjoying the new computers. They find them to be useful in data processing. Other people who enjoy the computers are coaches. They make clear statistics that are easily updated. Then there are those people whose lives have been complicated through the computers. The Students! Sophomores are now required to take a 9 week computer literacy class to familiarize themselves with the computers. Also, many junior and senior students took the computer programming class as an elective. Both classes are conducted in the BASIC language. Students have found that trying to get all their work done in class is next to impossible and during almost any class period, students from study hall can be found in the computer room busily typing away. Although many people think that they cause a lot of problems, nearly everyone thinks the computers are a good idea and many people feel like they're gaining a lot from the computers. Whether it was selling ads, writing copy, or drawing up pages, the staff always had something to do. The 1984 staff deserves a lot of credit. This year's staff had four Seniors: Co-Editor Pam Walker, David Haag, Shan- non Fuhrman, and Sam Street. This year's Lions Den writers were Shannon Fuhrman and Stacy Bowling. Paige Lankford and Pam Walker spent many hours in the dark room developing pictures and this was greatly appreciated. A lot of thanks should go to the Student Editors Shannon Weisheit and Pam Walker for all the hours they put into checking pages and doing pages of their own. She soon has to abandon her plans and deal with her homeroom responsibilities: atten- dance taking, filling out what seems to be a million forms, etc. The remainder of the play deals with the difficulties faced in her first term: the pro- blem students, the rowdy classrooms, her relationships with other teachers, her hesitation at staying on another term and the solution she finally reaches.
