Such things from working for good report cards in grade school to making the basketball team and to choosing the right course of life after high school filled our years. But you. Mom and Dad, were always there by our side giving us the encouragement and advice that was so needed then. You shared our moments of happiness as well as those of sorrow, always trying to make things a little easier for us. You understood and endured all these things as part of our growing up. And so, Mom and Dad, we dedicate this yearbook to you for all the patience, understanding, wisdom, and love you have given us through these years. The thoughts of Olive C. Wehr perfectly express our sentiment: You guided first my baby feet; Your very presence made life sweet. You kissed my childhood hurts away And taught me then to trust and pray. So I have learned, dear Parents of mine. That a Parent's love is a love divine. You always helped and understood As only a loving Parent could. You guided me through the hurtful years; You held my hand and stilled my fears. You held in check my wayward will, And, Parents of mine, you guide me still; For memory is a golden chain That links us till we meet again. With dedicated sponsors and officers, the class successfully sponsored dances, a chili supper and faculty-student ballgame, the Junior-Senior Prom Stairway to Heaven, and the 1972 Junior-Senior Banquet. Money-making projects also included selling fire extinguishers and auto wisk kits ... remember those days? As seniors, we have taken on the project of publishing The Black and Gold of 1973. Great memories of basketball competition will also stay with us. During our four years of high school, LHS has taken the Sectional Crown each year, plus the honors of State Finalists in 1970 and Sweet Sixteen in 1971. These trials and the accomplishment that can be achieved through such teamwork will certainly be remembered in years to come• As our high school career comes to a close, the class of 1973 would like to thank our teachers, friends, sponsors, and, above all, our parents for their determination, concern, and help with us both as a class and as individuals throughout our high school years, we feel that through their effort we have become strong and able to reach our goals in the future. We also wish success for the underclassmen, in hopes that they will make the best of their school years in preparing for their places in the world. It is the memory of the good and bad times in high school, of the many times struggling together, finally reaching the goals we had set, and of all the people who have shared in our lives, helping us to become better individuals that means so much. It is these memories that will stay with us as adults and keep us working toward success. Through those moments of joy, love, assurance, and tears that high school brings to everyone, we have been shaped to accept the responsibility of adulthood; and, with diplomas in our hands, we now go our separate ways to seek our ambitions in life. And so, as we pass out of the doors of our Alma Mater, discarding the robe of childhood to wear the cloak of adulthood well, we can but turn and gratefully whisper • • • 40 THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES . Class xrophetq As I was boarding the plane home after a long vacation, I noticed a familiar figure in front of me. Brenda Strange turned, and we recog- nized each other immediately. Debbi Myers, what are you doing? I told her I was returning to Loogootee as school was starting in a few weeks. Much surprised, she asked what I did at school. I told her that Ed Hamilton had retired and I was now the band director at old LHS. We started chatting about old times and I told her about several of the replacements at school. Kerry Prather had taken Jack Butcher's place as head coach; Dave Wuensch, after valuable experience at West Point, came back to teach Government and to take his father's place as base- ball coach; Marina Butcher had taken Linda Mehringer's place; Rachel Nolan was now the art instructor in Mr. Robberts' teaching position; Sue Stuffle was the school's cheerleader sponsor; Mark Williams had aspired to the job as superintendent; Greg Tilton was now the Driver's Education instructor (believe it or noti); and Kathy Davis replaces Mrs. Conolty at the lunchline. In the Elementary School, Beth Buchta was now teach- ing in Shirley Woods' old room; and Ann Lucas sings very prettily in her mother’s place. Kathy Walton is also at the school, but there is some doubt as to her status—teacher or student? My turn to question—I asked Brenda what she was doing. She in- formed me that she was presently sponsoring a traveling pom pon group, and that two of our former classmates, Donna Risacher and Mary Ellen Jones, were also in this group. Brenda and I decided that after ten years, it would be a good idea to try and look up the rest of our classmates. Arriving back at Loogootee, we decided to ride through town for ideas. Sitting on the square we found Dale Divine, Keith Ellis, and Dave Milligan in Dale's '73 RT--a remnant from senior days. We went on to the Dog 'N Suds and learned that Bob Walton had taken over the Dog from his parents and was making a real success of it. As we left the Dog 'N Suds, we were hit by an oncoming milktruck driven by none other than John Williams.' The police were quick to arrive on the scene and, much to our surprise, they turned out to be three former classmates: Ed Lingenfelter, Jim Crays, and Mike Grafton. There was little damage to the car, so in five minutes we were on our way again. Traveling past the Farm Bureau, we saw another classmate, Rick Craney, and decided to pull in. When we asked him where we might find some of our other classmates, he said Sandee Sumner was inside. We then left him and proceeded to her office. After we admired her life-sized autographed picture of Johnny Bench, we asked for the gossip. She started by telling us about who had gotten married. Several kept it in the class: Janice Norris and Jim Stanton, Terry Riggins and Karen Beasley (who now had a little 'squeak' around the house), Danny Jones and Nancy Walton. The others went for older men: Mary Lou Matthews, Marla Kalb, Leslie Rodick, Peggy Gee, Ingrid Bullock, Lynn Stuckey, Patty Spears, Cindy Brooks, and Kathy Zeigler. Not married yet, but still running around with their old flames are Rheta Street and Bert Williams. We also found out that Teresa Sargent and Rhonda Honeycutt were still husband-hunting. Brenda Sterling and Linda Trambaugh took off for Bloomington soon after gradu- ation and no one has heard from them since. Debbie Reinhart was still working at the Union Bank posting checks as usual; and Jerry Padgett and Betty Ward were partners now, running the Red White. Darrel Dye and Kenny Beasley were back at the Jay C after their stint with the Navy. At the Tribune Office was Tony Hotz, still stacking the papers on Wednesday. 50 Since it was still early Saturday morning (about 10:00), we thought we’d go to Shoals because I had to pick up my license plates. We told Sandee good-bye and were on our way. Halfway to Shoals, we noticed a group of cottages we had never seen before and, upon reading the sign, learned it was a commune. Taking a look inside, we met the leader of the cpng—Terry Colleran. He said other members of the commune included former classmates, Theresa Hammer, Mike Leighty, Garth Greenwell, Sissy Allen, Cindy Butcher, and Gayla Swayze. Since they were very busy making maple syrup, we resumed our journey. Upon arriving at Shoals, the line at the license branch was very long, so we took a walk to the courthouse as it had been a long time since we'd last seen it. We were very surprised to see Jackie Riney typing the court notices. Slipping past to peek upstairs, we discovered Tom Searl, Jeff Fiscus, Kent Ervin, and Mark Burger imprisoned there. As this was no real surprise, we left to go back to the license branch. Nearing the head of the line, we saw Diane Ellis and Susan Colvin working behind the counter. Completing our chore, we returned to the car and headed for Loogootee. Still trying to catch up with our classmates, we decided last week's tribune might yield some more gossip and clues. Sure enough, there were several articles. One on the famous model, Vickie Tait, who was doing her first commercial soon. Another one on the famous commer- cial artist, Linda McArthy, who had just returned from a tour of Europe. The third was an article about a brilliant geological discovery by another classmate, Tim Bannister. The last article was about the U. S. Olympic Team. It seems the track division is the most outstanding in the history of the Olympics. Naturally, it includes several members of the Class of 1973—Tim Summers, Larry Wininger, and Jeff Chandler. Brenda and I knew this was due in a large part to their attitude and strict training. Back in the car, the radio made several outstanding announcements. At least, they were outstanding to us. The first reported the marriage of 7' 2 Wilt Chamberlain to a classmate of ours, 4’ 10 Beth Kelly. I guess that was the long and short of it. Following that was the announcement that tomorrow was the deadline for all applications for the spelling bee sponsored by Craig Owensby. Brenda and I recalled that he had been a brilliant speller himself. The last announcement was a notice of the change of time of a meeting. Arranged by former class president, Mark Sheetz, who was now an international president, it concerned his club, the Buddy and Jan Fan Club. Still in town, we came across another friend in a predicament we well remember. She was stuck in the mud. Yes, it was Dottie Meyers. Once again, Brenda and I helped Dottie get her car out of the mud. When we told her of our self-appointed mission, she contributed the informa- tion that our three top classmates were all busy in business. Duane Hembree owned and operated one of the nation's biggest fertilizer companies with its home base in Rutherford. At the home office, secre- taries Bev Souerdyke and Helen McAtee were his left and right hands, respectively! As we went through town again, we finally noticed that Louise's was now Lynn's. Dottie said that another classmate worked there also, Patty Halbleib. (We wondered if people still had trouble spelling her name.) A couple of blocks later, we came upon a construction crew bearing several members of our class. There were Mike Grindstaff, Gene Spaulding, Kent Jeffers, Mark Bowling, and the witty Mike Baker. PROPHECY CONCLUDED ON PAGE 54! 51 R. Honeycutt • M R. Street ■ We passed a new lot with a beautiful house almost completed. As we stopped to admire it, one of the workers told us the house had been designed by the famous draftsman who was returning to Loogootee, Gary Frye, with his bride and secretary Marlene Arvin. After all this running around, we needed gas. We decided to go to the Sunoco so that we could get the car washed also. To our delight, our classmate, Richard Summers was running the gas station. Not so delightful was the inflationary price we paid for the gas and car wash! Today's paper contained several more interesting articles. The first was a report of a grant given to Diane Klingle and Mary Padgett. Diane was working in marine biology and Mary was setting up a biological research center. The other was an article about the Peace Corps. It seems that four of our classmates, Debbie Hembree, Ann Bruner, Ann Rogers, and Cindy Smith, had joined and were stationed in Africa. Un- fortunately, when they were recalled to this country, they decided to stay and mingle with the natives. Brenda and I are not yet sure who is unfortunate, them or the natives! The last was a notice of a meeting of the 4-H group called the Haystackers. This group is sponsored by Darrel Walton and Mark Hewitt, who we discovered are both very success- ful farmers. We thought that after a rest we would go to the Rustic. Since this had always been a favorite haunt for everyone, we thought we might find the rest of our class. It turned out as we expected. Several classmates said they went every week; Kay Risacher, Sandy Robinson, Patrice Bullock, Connie Butcher, Karen McAtee, Jonell Downey, and Kathy Fish--the comment passed that perhaps they were still hunting??? On our way back to town we noticed a trailor with the most attrac- tive red lights. We learned later that this was the trailor Martha Mathias, Bev Clark, and Kim Wininqer had talked about in high school and finally bought. We noticed also that the R R had reopened and discovered that Mike Hoover had bought it. They now have live entertainment in the form of the Walker Sisters, singing, dancing, and much more. His three best customers included Bill Harder, Jerry Edwards, and Cathy Gates. At church the next day, we discovered the minister was none other than THE Most Reverend Donnie Reinhart. His Choir Master was Delbert Walls, who always did have a beautiful voice. It was unbearably hot in the church and some poor lady fainted from the heat. Fortunately, Nurse Eichmiller was present and able to assist. Talking to her after church, we learned that Debbie Skelton had just completed her nurse's training and would begin work at the school this year. She said another of our classmates, Connie Elliot, was also working at the hospital as an X-ray technician. She also informed us that Cathie Wildman was still working at the Medco Nursing Home. Walking back to the car, we came upon Mike Jones and Karen Strange, uttering their first sounds. This was quite a shock since they had always been extremely quiet back at LHS. Mike came out of it enough to tell us that Terry Wease and Debbie Gragg were still going to I. U. When we asked what was taking them so long, he told us that between all the parties they were having trouble making their grades. That was the whole class—wait a minute! We forgot Sharli Hunt; excuse us, we have just learned that it is not Hunt but Tilton! Beth and Duane This year's Prom began with a Grand March at the high school gym where the couples were announced as they entered under an ivy- twined arch enhanced with spring flowers. Following the Grand March, the Prom was held at the beautiful Jasper Country Club, where a hand-lettered sign bearing the theme, Pieces of April, greeted the couples as they entered. When the couples weren't eating the delicious buffet dinner served at the Club, they were enjoying dancing in the ballroom and on the terrace to music by Gryphon. Many thanks go to Mr. Robberts, Hr. During the basketball season, they were in charge of the Coat Check. To keep the school spirit up, the class also sold black and gold bas- ketball pennants. At the end of the year, the sophomore class held the annual chili supper which was followed by a very en- tertaining faculty-student ballgame. Considering the amount of work put in by the class and their spon- sors and the fun provided by the game, it was well worth the price. The students were all ex- cited when it came to ordering class rings last March. The freshman class also proved to be an asset to the Booster Club, as they captured and held the Spirit Stick more often than any other class. It will take a lot of yelling to top this class’s spirit! The freshmen, having made it through their most try- ing year as Greenies,” are looking forward to next year. Under the direction of Mr. Ed Hamilton, our various group bands have been involved in many activities this year. Besides all of the concerts, contests, and marches in which the Concert Band partici- pates, the lively Pep Band keeps the basketball fans full of spirit during half-time entertainment. In addition to this, the Dafice Band gave a special performance at the annual Spring Concert, a function everyone always enjoys. Remember the Christmas pa- rade when Santa came to Loogootee? That was our band and Pom Pon Girls performing. Band officers pictured below are Marina Butcher (Sec.), Delbert Walls (Pres.), Rhonda Honeycutt (V. Young and old alike were on hand to welcome Santa and view the parade, which included the LHS Band, the Lionettes, and some gaily wrapped Christmas boxes. The crowd was enter- tained on the square with a standing dance routine by the Lionettes, while the Band played Jingle Bell Rock. The highlight of the events was the arrival of Santa's helicopter and the jolly old man himself. Pictured at right are Santa and his three helpers, Beth Kelly, Jonell Downey, and Karen McAtee. harmony” comes to lhs The seniors decided that it has been too long since LHS has had any vocal music. So, under the direction of Mrs. Janice Arnett, some of the girls got an ensemble together, singing popular and traditional songs at many concerts and functions throughout the year. But, you know how the guys are — they need to get in the act, too. With the addition of six great male voices, Harmony was now able to master more songs with greater voice range. The senior members hope that enough will want to sing as a group next year so that Harmony will remain as a continuing success. ROW li R. Honeycutt, A. Bruner, S. Colvin, S. Stuffle, L. Nolan, D. God Bless them every one To run this hard and stubborn world Just as it should be run; But much I fear they'll find that facts Don't always run with dreams; And running this old world is not, As easy as it seems. The graduate is prone to think His wisdom is complete. He's but to ask—the world will lay It's trophies at his feet. But school days done and work begun. He learns to his regret The college of experience He has not mastered yet. The world has garlands and applause at graduating time; But may forget him the next day When he attempts to climb. Life is a battle where each one Must seek and hold his own. He who would rise above the clouds Must scale the heights alone. This is the rule of life today. As it has ever been; The world bestows its smile on those Who have the strength to win. Beneath all outward semblances It looks for merit true. It little cares how much you know, But, asks, what can you do? Unknown inter collecficite press, inc.
