Under the guidance of Mrs. Kathro Williams, who was selected as our sponsor, the class sponsored a sock hop and held a class party. Class officers were as follows: President ................................ Roy Panned Vice-President...........................Rosalie Ciolli Secretary-Treasurer.............................. Patty Dennison In 1959, forty-eight of us returned as sophomores. We sponsored a sock-hop and a candy sale under the leadership of Mrs. Williams. The class officers this year were: President ............................... Carrol Davis Vice-President ....................... James Bruner Secretary............................... Charlene Braun Treasurer .......................... Beverly Lagenour Our third year of high school began with only thirty-two members returning. We held several money- making projects. Among these were several candy sales, a car wash, two sock hops, and a chili supper. The class, under the direction of Mrs. Williams, also sponsored a show, sold fruit cakes and ball point pens. We received our class rings and closed our junior year with an Oriental Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The class officers were: President ..............................Eddy Deaton Vice-President..........................Virgil Harper Secretary ............................. Charlene Braun Treasurer................................. Mike Lett Here it is 1962 and twenty-seven of us are seniors. Throughout the year the seniors have participated in several money-raising projects. We are very proud of our annual, The Black and Gold, whichalmost all of the seniors, along with our sponsor, Mrs. Williams, helped to publish. We are looking forward to the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom and to our class trip in May to Washington D. C. The events which we will always remember will be our baccalaureate and commencement. I decided to combine my trip and the fun of looking up my old classmates from L. H.S. I decided that if I had a traveling companion, I would enjoy the trip more, but whom could I persuade to go with me? I pondered this question for awhile and came up with the answer—Sandy Parish! I picked Sandy for two reasons. First, she was my friend and second, she had enough money to pay her own way (she had recently cleaned up at the tables in Las Vegas). We packed our bags, boarded the train, and headed for San Francisco singing California, Here We Come. When the conductor came by to punch our tickets, we recognized him as Carrol Davis. He pointed out another classmate who was also on the train. It was Mike Lett. We talked with Mike for quite awhile and recalled some of the good times we used to have in high school. He told us that he was on his way to Hollywood to star in a new television show about a doctor. (Who says you can't predict the future? I remember when we were still in school, we used to call him Doc. ) He told us that Marvin Survance was now president of a big oil company in Texas. I believe he also said something about a rumor that Marvin's uncle owned the company. We arrived in San Francisco and transferred to a luxury liner bound for Honolulu. Upon arriving in Hawaii, we decided to take a few hula lessons. To our surprise the instructor turned out to be Roy Pannell. We chatted with Roy and he gave us a tip as to where we might find another of our classmates He told us to go to a big department store in the heart of the city. We thanked him for the tip and went to the store to find Ralph Mauder modeling muu-muus. Both Roy and Ralph seemed to be happy in their work. After bidding the islands farewell, we sailed for the Orient. We landed in China and started out to do some sightseeing. We took a ride in a rickshaw. Deciding that we were hungry, we asked the driver to stop at a little Chinese restaurant. After tipping the rickshaw driver, we started to walk away but taking a second look under that funny little hat we found James Bruner. We asked Jim how he ever came to be in China pulling a rickshaw. He told us that our prom had inspired him. We entered the restaurant and were amazed to find an American atmosphere, but what else could you expect with an American owner. In fact, she was a classmate of ours—Andrea Palladino. 22 Next our trip took us to Italy. First to Rome, where a new movie was being filmed starring those two top box office stars, Donna Lagle and Charles Day. Then we went to Venice for a ride in a gondola with a singing gondolier. His name seemed vaguely familiar—Mike Newton. From there we headed for Paris. We knew our trip wouldn't be complete if we didn't get an original evening gown either from LaMar's Dressmaking Salon owned by Gary LaMar or from Arvin's Fashion House operated by Ruth Arvin. We left Paris and sailed across the English Channel to London, England. Here we read in the local paper that Larry Anderson was the new Prime Minister of England. We left England the next day and flew (by airplane, of course) to New York. Our pilot and stewardess for the trip were Virgil Harper and Terry Able. We chatted with them for a little while after we landed. They told us that our new ambassadress to Russia, Ruth Ann Braun, had cemented our relations with that country. (Could it be because she gave Krush some tickets to Disneyland?) Now we had located all of our classmates except just a few. We decided to start looking for the rest in Loogootee. We figured if anyone could help us it would be the editor of the local newspaper. We walked into the editor's office and to our pleasant surprise we found the editor to be Mary Frances Goins. She told us that Jim Jones had taken over his father's job at the local theater which was now owned by Karen Hembree and Kay Neukam who are both married now. She said that Margaret O'Brien now owned a string of hotels and that she was married and lived in Florida. Mary also told us where in town we could find another of our classmates. She said Judy Nigg now owned the place on the corner where she used to work. We stopped in to see Judy and found that she is still single. She can't seem to make up her mind to settle down. She told us that Diane Conolty was married and lived in Pennsylvania. She also told us that Kenny Ellis and Charlene Braun were married and lived on a farm which Kenny owned. Charlene teaches in the local school. (I see she got her M. A., B. A., and Mrs. Degrees.) As we were about to leave town, we happened past the poolroom. We looked in and whom should we see but our dear sponsor, Mrs. Williams. She told us that the doctor had advised her to take up pool as a form of relaxation. Within those nine wins the Lions captured the SWIAC Championship and they were also County Champs. The batting trophy was won this year by Bob Haines who got 13 hits for 30 times at bat This gave him a high of .433. The Lions were backed by two fine pitchers. Junior Gee and Larry Christley. Gee pitched three-no- hitters. The Lions lost three players due to graduation. They are as follows: Gary LaMar, Roy Pannell, and Larry Anderson. The Lions, under the fine coaching of Jack Butcher, had a remarkable season of 23 wins against 3 losses. The 17 wins acquired during the regular season broke the school's record of the most wins on straight. Among the various wins of the season, the Lions again won the Wabash Valley Prelim by defeating AI fordsvi I le. Shoals and Odon. This gave them the privilege of going to Switz City to participate in the semi-finals. The Lions had bad luck as they were defeated by the Linton Minors in the first game. The next highlight of the season was the Washington Sectional. The mighty Lions defeated Alfordsville, St. John's and the Washington Hatchets to capture the Sectional crown for the second straight year. This was the seventh sectional win in the history of our school and the second for Coach Jack Butcher. On the following Saturday the Lions traveled to Huntingburg for the Regional. Although the Lions played a very good defensive and offensive game, they were defeated by the Vincennes Alices, 55- 53. They just couldn't seem to get ahead of the determined Vincennes team. The final game was between Vincennes and Jasper. Jasper was victorious. Junior Gee established a new L. H. S. gym scoring record by dropping in 43 points against Mont- gomery. The old record was set by Bill Nigg in 1960. 55 This Page Sponsored By: DOYLE LUMBER CO. Gary LaMar, a 5-11 Senior, was next with 12 points and his position as guard was played with such excellent ball handl- ing as to allow the Lions their victroy. Although LaMar was not chosen for the All Sectional Team, his playing ability should not be without credit- Coach Jack' Butcher taught these boys the tight defense which they displayed so brilli- antly Saturday night, forcing the Hatchets to abandon their offense and leave their usual spot under the? basket. Butche.’s ability in basketball prowes. started when the Lions won the Sectional in 1950-51 and he was a player on that team. This second consecutive Sec- tional Victory for Butcher and his team in the five years he has coached the Lions is quite a record. He plays the game Just as hard as the players themselves and suffers their misses just as profusely as he glories in their hits. The Victory and the home coming for the Lions and their fans left nothing undone. The game was a thriller from start to finish with the Washington gym bursting at the seams with fans. The bonfire and shout of joy from the huge crowd awaiting the boys in Loogootee was, to quote a stranger, some- thing rare to behold. Virgil Harper, a 6-1 Senior, scored 11 points as forward and was chosen as a forward on the All Sectional Team. Harper was one of the five brilliant players, to whom credit should be given. Roy Pannel, a 6-4 Senior, followed in scoring with 13 points and played his position as forward with skill and pre- cision in using his height in getting that ball when needed. He was chosen one of the second five for the All Section- al Team as forward. Darrell Smith, a 6-2 Junior, a valuable player as center, scored two points but the con- trol of the bank board by Smith made him the, leading re- bounder of the game. Only proves that he, too, will be a valuable player on the lineup for the Lions next year. Smith was also chose as one of the second five for the All Sec- tional Team as forward.
