SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the class of '61, with fifty-four students, entered Loogootee High School in the fall of 1957. Mr. Purcell was chosen to be our class sponsor. Under his guidance we sponsored a sock-hop. We also enjoyed a party at the American Legion Home and a class outing at Spring Mill State Park. The class officers were: President...... Vice-President Secretary...... Treasurer...... Denny Phillips . .James Krodel . Patty Barber . Jo Ann Harris Only forty-seven of us returned for our sophomore year. During this year we sponsored a sock-hop and sold magazine subscriptions. The class officers were: President........................James Krodel Vice-President................. Denny Phillips Secretary .....................Joe Montgomery Treasurer......................Danny Thomas In the fall of '59, thirty-eight of us returned for our junior year. Our class rings were received and the year closed successfully with a Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, which was given with the guidance and help of Miss Crooke and our class sponsor, Mr. Purcell. During the year a sock-hop , a chili supper, and a bake sale were held. In the fall of 1960, forty of us returned as seniors. We had several moneymaking projects, which included sponsoring several candy sales, a spaghetti and meatball supper, Christmas cards, a movie, and others not mentioned. Now as the year closes, we are looking forward to our class trip and the banquet and prom. SKMOIt CLASS NtOPIIBiY On May 7, 1971, Patty and I, working as newspaper reporters for the Loogootee Tribune, were call- ed into the office of our editor, Denny Phillips. He was wanting to run a special news editorial on our graduating class of 1961. It was our first big break and we wanted to make good. We were going to have to work hard for the editorial was to be published on May 19, the day of our graduation anniversary. We knew we could not accomplish this task by ourselves so we turned to the F.B.I. for help. Who do you think was appointed to help us but our old classmate, Betty Evans. Our story started in our home town where we knew what the kids were doing. Peggy Fish is a Phys. Ed. teacher—she teaches body conditioning. Ronnie Daugherty is now the official popcorn popper at old L.H.S. Roger Gentry is president of the Beatnik Club (commonly known as the Way-Out Club) of Loogootee. Ronnie Fullerton, who became a Latin teacher, is still skipping through the halls of L. H.S. flirting with the girls. Jim Melton owns a big farm just outside the city limits of Loogootee and is quite a success. To get the rest of the information for our story, we had to rent a helicopter and travel all over the United States. You'll never guess who our pilot was! Camilla Jones. She said she really likes her work. Our first stop was at Plainville. Wayne Dillon now owns and operates his own gas station in Plainville. Wayne informed us that Danny Hoffman owns a big chicken ranch on the outskirts of Epsom. We went to the ranch and found Paul Moffitt working as his foreman. Danny told us that he is having trouble with his hens smashing their eggs. Could it be that Paul is always late to pick up the eggs? We then traveled to Las Vegas. We stopped at the Pizza Palace for dinner and were surprised to learn that Marilee Atchison and Suzanne Strickland were the owners. Mari lee and Suzanne cameout and talked to us and told us the bad news that the Palace was being closed the next day for illegal doings in the back room. They also told us that Jo Ann Harris and Gary Fox were co-owners of most of the gambling cassinos and beer joints in Las Vegas. We visited their offices and found Carolyn Hembree working as their private secretary. She obtained this position on the recommendation of her high school shorthand and typing tea- cher. Carolyn informed us that Shirley Woods was working in Las Vegas as a divorce lawyer. I bet she keeps busy! Betty tracked some of the kids down in New York. Sharon Jones was the first one we ran across. She was deep in politics. She announced her intentions of running for the Presidency in November. Just think! She will be our first woman President! Sharon told us the news that Joe Montgomery had just been appoint- ed as Ambassador to Russia. We hope he doesn't do anything to harm our relationship with Russia. Sharon said that one day when she was downtown in Macv's she ran across Doris Stranqe. We went to Macv's and found Doris working as a model—she was modeling men's socks. We asked Doris if she knew of the whereabouts of any of the old classmates. She said we would be surprised to learn that Karen Jordan has traveled more than any other woman in the world—she is the elevator operator in the Empire State Building. 21
