As we started our school term in September with 51 green but eager-to-learn freshmen, ♦he out- standing characters were: Mr. Hoi land-sponsor; Norman Gillick-president; Ruth Truelove-vice- president; Bill Fisher-boys' treasurer; Pat Pennington-girls' treasurer. We were very proud to have two boys. Bill Fisher and Norman Gillick, make the basketball team. Among other pleasures was a hay ride and a trip to Spring Mill State Park. Although with all the excitement and activities eight lost out in the struggle for Finer education. In the fall of 1952 we once more take our place as students of L. H. S. Even at the beginning of this year we lost some, for only 44 returned. This year the ones to take the responsibility of our class were: Mrs. Young-sponsor; Jack Clark-president; Bill Fisher-vice-president; Donna Cox- secretary; Eddie Walton-boys1 treasurer; Pat Pennington - girls' treasurer. That year we enjoyed a Christmas party and a trip to Spring Mill State Park, yet four were marked off of the records as far as the class of 1955 was concerned. Here it is 1953 and we are juniors, 39 of us. With the spotlight on Miss Crooke and Mr. Young as sponsors, Bill Fisher-president; Jack Clark-vice-president; Barbara Riggins-secretary; Ruth Truelove-treasurer. There was a lot of excitement that year. We received our class rings and planned a most successful Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Also the juniors were in the sports activities with Bill Fisher and Norman Gillick progressing rapidly and Chester Thompson as yell-leader. We ended that year with a trip to Spring Mill, and still 2 less. Well , at last we are seniors, bubbling with joy. This is our most wonderful year. Being ambitious we published a monthly paper and a yearbook. Leading the class were: Mr. Jones- sponsor; Bill Fisher-president; Jack Qualkinbush-vice-president; Donna Cox-secretary; Louise Sutton-treasurer. Those leading in sports activities were Bill Fisher and Norman Gillick. Del orise Phillips and Janet Gibson were yell leaders. Even with the excitement of a trip to Washington D. C., a banquet and prom, 2 dropped out of the class. And the moments we shall never forget are our baccalaureate and commencement. 19 elan wui We, the members of the senior class of 1955 of the Loogootee High School, Loogootee, Indiana, on this 19th day of May, being of sound mind and realizing that we shall soon leave this phase of our lives, do declare this statement to be our very last will and testament: To Mr. Williams our principal, we gladly bequeath the juniors to be dignified seniors, and we sincerely hope he won't have as much trouble with them as he seemed to have with us. We, the class of 1955, do hereby will our wonderful sponsor, Mr. Jones, to the oncoming seniors, the class of 1956. 20 Ia.55 Ptopltecy Sept. 6, 1955 Dear Diary, Well the long awaited day has finally come to an end. Our class reunion turned out to be a big success. Everyone from our class of '55 was there including our class sponsor, Mr. Jones. I found that over two-thirds of our class are married. Among those living in Loogootee are: Eddie Walton, Irene Bough Swartzentruber, Betty Bussinger Yutzy, and Louise Sutton Parsons. There were quite a few states represented also at this reunion. Marcella Streete Taylor and Shirley Gentry Reeves are now residing in California, Nora Ferguson Johnson in Illinois, Juanita Davis Taylor in Georgia, and Janet Gibson Strange in Kentucky. Jo Ann Smith Himsel has made her home at Ireland, Ann Wilson Harshaw at Mitchell, Ruth Truelove Wilson at Indianapolis, and myself at Jasper. I was very happy to learn that one of my '55 classmates, Ronnie Beasley is mayor of Loogootee and Rex Melton is the chief of police. Pat Pennington, the girl friday” of our class, is working as office secretary at Loogootee High School. No, I don't suppose they will forget us for quite some time at L. H. S. You see, some of our '55 grads are still there. Not as students of course, but teaching the students. Jack Qualkinbush is now the head football coach. John Jones took over the job as civics and English teacher after his father's retirement. However, he gave up the job as senior class sponsor to his fellow faculty member, Terry Ledgerwood, who is now teaching history. Dick Barber was there with one of his girl friends. ,He has just received his B.S. degree and and intends to continue his work at Indiana State Teachers College. Betty Hawkins was writing up her story of the reunion for the Loogootee Tribune. I hear she's the star reporter. Two of our classmates made careers of the service. Jack Clark just flew back from Europe in time to attend our meeting. Larry Higgs spent most of his time telling the rest of the fellows about his job as a jet ace pilot. Three of our friends are going places in the medical profession. Vera Milligan is a registered nurse at Jasper Hospital where Bill Fisher is head physician. Judith Barber was there with her boss, she is working as a dental technician and plans to be married soon. 2 1 Donna Cox is serving as airline hostess for TWA. We also had quite a few celebrities present. Miss Emma Taylor was wearing one of her creations as a dress designer for MGM. Her neighbor, Pat Souerdike, works on the Paramount Studio lot as a hair stylist. The girls got a stunning view of the newest fashions from two top Power models, Elma Wikle and Doris Earps. Norman Gillick went to college to continue being a basketball player and now plays on a pro basketball team. Entertainment of the evening was supplied by Barbara Riggins, who had just made her debut in Carnegie Hall, and Richard Wright, who is moving up in the music world. He is singing with the Eddie Fisher show at present.' Of course, I can't forget about Mr. Jones. His bowling scores are about the same and he's still fighting off the crowds at the Ritz Theatre Sunday afternoons. I'm sure the class of '55 will remember this day for some time. I can hardly wait until Sept. 6, 1975, the date set for our second class reunion. During the year one more entered the class ond six withdrew. For our parties we had a hayride and a Christmas party under the competent supervision of Mr. Alvin Holland, our sponsor. The class officers were: prejident- Jim Bateman, vice-president—Gordon Cole, secretaries —Janice Phillips and Duane Sargent. At the end of the school year we went to Springfield State Park. On entering 1954 we had fifty enrolled as sophomores. During the year another student entered and five withdrew. Our sponsors were Mr. Hudson and Mrs. Dooley. School was dismissed for Christmas vacation immediately following the program. During the past year a series of sock hops were sponsored by the seniors. The seniors had the honor of being the guest of the Women's Club. The party was held in the St. John's Hall, February 4, 1955 at 1:00 P. M. On October 2, 1954, Loogootee High School had the opportunity to attend the High School Band Day at Indiana University. On March 11, 1955, the seniors had the opportunity to visit the General Assembly at Indianapolis, Indiana. All of the seniors attended. The seniors presented their class play to the students of the high school and grade school in April. It was a success. The seniors presented a talent show in March consisting of entries from both the grade and high school. Several of the students from the Glee Club attended a music concert at Bloomington, Indiana on February 5, 1955. Norman is a good driver and floor man. He also has played ball for four years and is co-captain. Larry Garrett---------------Junior center. Larry is the tallest man on the team. They finished the s eason with a record of 10 wins and 3 losses. The Lions held two wins each over Montgomery, Washington, and Shoals while taking single games from West Baden, Otwell, Odon, and Elnora. The losses went to French Lick, Freelandville, and Plainville. The loss to Plainville was perhaps the hardest one of all for it came in the championship game of the Martin and Davies County tourney. The Lions earned their place in the final game by defeating Odon and Elnora. Plainville won out over Shoals 14 to 3; Denbo was on the mound for Plainville giving only 2 hits and 3 runs. Horner, Dant, and Kidwell pitched for Shoals; they gave up 7 hits and 14 runs. The second game at 5:30: Loogootee defeated Odon 13 to 3. Bland pitched for Loogootee and allowed 4 hits and 3 runs. Norman Gillick hit a triple and a bases loaded home run. Bland banged out a triple and a single and Wittmer got two singles. Sims and Crew pitched for Odon, giving 19 hits and 13 runs. In the third game of the day, Elnora eliminated Montgomery 13 to 2. Cox did the hurling for Elnora and gave only one hit, a lead-off single to Bob McCormick. McCormick, pitching for Montgomery, gave a total of 9 hits and 13 runs, including a triple by Melshemon. The second round was started on September 29, at 5:30 by St. John's and Plainville. Jerry Osman pitched one of the best games of the tourney as he didn't allow a single hit. The only two base runners St. John's had came through a walk. Osman also struck out 15 of St. John's batters. Reynolds was on the mound for St. John's and gave up 14 hits and 9 runs. Loogootee won the right to appear in the final game by defeating Elnora 13 to 3. Nossett pitched for Loogootee and gave 4 hits and 3 runs. He also struck out 10 while walking only 2. Cox and Woodsmall shared the mound duties for Elnora. They gave a total of 6 hits and 13 runs. In the final game Plainville defeated Loogootee 5 to 1 . Nossett was on the mound for Loogootee and pitched a very fine game. He gave only 5 hits and only 1 extra base hit to to the hard hitting Plainville team.
