LOOGOOTEE i PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL THE BLACK AIID GOLD • 195 .. We, the teachers and students of Loogootee High School, dedicate the 195 Black and Gold to you, Mr. James M. Halgerty, Superintendent. Your mode of life, your talents, your Interests, your dislikes, and your pleasures have been Inspiretlonal to us. You will In your retirement be a guiding light to follow. May this 195 Black and Gold be a small token of gratitude from the Innumerable caravan of students whom you have guided on their safari through life. Tribute To Miss Pate The Last Class Pew of us have stayed on a Job for thirty-eight years and fewer still hare spent those years In the same roo . Due to 111 health Miss Pate, teacher of grade two, resigned her position in Loogootee Public School during the school year of 1955-5 Miss Pate was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College and holds a master's de- gree from the same school. She also had a year's training at Indiana University and special training In primary work at Blaker College of Indianapolis. Miss ftite was a diligent worker as well as one of Loogootee's most conscientious teaohers. Usually she was the first teacher at school In the morning and many times the last to leave In the evening. Teaching was Indeed Miss Fate's life. She not only had prepared herself for teaching but also lived as she taught. An occupation so dutifully accomplished must be remembered by the administration, faoulty, and the stu- dents of Loogootee Public School. Hr. James H. Haigerty Superintendent Mr. Leo J. Holmes) I wrote some linos once on a time To grace the senior page; And as folks will, I thought they'd say, Tf was written by a sage! These lines were sad, so very sad. My mind went wandering far To the things we did, to the things we said, And to things as they now are. I thought to write of the senior class Would surely be no crime. But then, nobody liked my words, And no one liked my rhyme. I visioned members of the class As roaming far and wide; But this was such a bitter thought I laid t hat verse aside. I tried to rhyme each name and deed, 3ut nothing came out right. So, members of the senior class, I now these words Indite: 'Words of farewell weren't meant to rhyme, And though we now must part, The memories to which we cling Will linger In each heart. Class Class W ill Writer Artist Arnold Noel DON T BE BASHFUL The Senior Class held their annual school play at the Loogootee gymnasium Friday, April 23. It was a three act comedy filled with young romance portrayed realistically by the members of the senior class and with the help of our sponsor Mr. Jones. The play cast Is as follows: Nancy Adams... Walter Adams.. Grace Adams... Ken Hunt...... Sam Hunt...... Judy Hunt..... Larry Marshall Phyll8s Burk.. Prances Terry. Caroline Green Officer Pluck. Beth Young Bob Walton Betty Strawn Eddie Trego Ted Holt Donna Blair Woodle Olbson Margie Clark Peggy Mattingly Norma Jones Ray B rewster THE CLASS OP 54 Four years ago a new book was opened In the offices of LHS with the enrollment of sixty green but determined freshmen. Perhaps the main actors In this tale of life were Norma Jones, who presided as president over this vast assortment of pupils, Nancy Plunmer, who not- ed as vice-president, Pearl Walton, who was secretary, and Ralph Wil- son, who was treasurer, light of the sixty participants In this story were lost In the shambles of the Initial year of high school to sink Into oblivion as far as the class or 54 was concerned. The first ohap- ter of this series ended In a blaze of festivities with Mr. Holland sponsoring the class In two delightful parties. Chapter two opens. As sophomores, the class of 54 had enough adventures to last us a lifetime. Mrs. Young was a very Important actress In this era of our formal education. Three parties were giv- en with the help of our class officers: Evelyn Mattingly, Ralph Wil- son, Beth Young. Again we lost a few of the characters of our story when ten more members of our class gave up the struggle for a diploma. The most thrilling experiences of our lives came In the third chapter of this book. Our Junior-Senior Reception was a sparkling suc- cess at the French Lick Hotel on May 25th. No story Is complete with- out a hero and heroine and In this third chapter, readers will please note our sponsors, Hiss Crooke and Hr. Young. They really were a tre- mendous help and Influenced us In our search for the ultimate olimax of the story, our diploma. Our class rings received during the year serve to remind us of a most enjoyable chapter In this book. Our class officers were: Delbert Fellers- president, Norman Atohlson- vice- president, Beth Young- secretary, Evelyn Mattingly- treasurer. All good books must come to an end. Oils one just seems to have ended sooner than any other. When this olass receive their diplomas on May 26, 1954, it will bring to an end the most enjoyable part of our lives. Thirty-seven seniors entered LHS at the beginning of the fall term and we hope to have thirty-seven graduates. Our wonderful sponsor, Mr. Jones, and our olass officers: Robert Walton- president, FWarl Walton- vice-president, Evelyn Hattlngly- seoretary, Beth Young- treasurer— have succeeded In making this a most Interesting and memorable year. Chapter four Is coming to an end, the history of the class of 54 to a dose. A summary of the outstand- ing Individuals In the book would lnolude Hr. Halgerty, the beloved superintendent of LHS, Hr. Costello, the prlnolpal, Mr. Jones, our sponsor, and all the other teaohers who have helped the class of 1954 to become graduates of the Loogootee High School. BACCALAUREATE SERVICE The Baccalaureate service was held In the gymnasium on the night of May 23, 1954. COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES Commencement exercises were held In the gymnasium on May 26, 1954. SPONSORED BY WALKERS DRUG COMPANY CLASS PROPHECY I had the strangest dream last night! And what was It about but the old class of '54 '. It was 10 years In the future and I was at a party which was being held In honor of our former sponsor, Mr. Henry Jones. Stopping at the punch bowl, I noticed my good friend, Peg Mattingly, now wife of a very prom- inent veterinarian, Don Spaulding. W© began walking around the room, talking to our old friends and found that many surprising things had happened. The law firm, Truelove, Wilcoxen, and Noel, which handles only the business of the large Industries, consists of none other than our former classmates. Mrs. Jim Dowden (Barbara Wikle) told us that the French Lick Springs Hotel Is now under the combined management of Pat Earps, Eleanor Bruner, Nancy Plum- mer, and James Walton. All of the girls have married very wealthy business- men. Ballard Melton Joined our group, telling us that Virginia Mllllran, Harrlette Spears, and Marllou Walton are registered nurses and each Is wear- ing a beautiful diamond. He also told us that he and Eddie Trego were fly- ing to New York Immediately after the party, both of them being very anxious to get back to their paper, the New York Times. From across the room Norma Jones a.-.d Pearl Walton spotted us and hurried to us Just bursting with news. Since I last saw them, they had both man led and each had four child- ren! Pearl tells me that Robert Walton has taken over the raanefement of the Farm 3ureau after his father’s retirement. More news was that Harold Hem- bree and Wanda Frye have finally married. They were going steady back at L. H. S. Our conversation turned to sports and I found that Norman Atchison Is coaching at a state university and having a very successful season, too. In the same college, Donna Norris, with an M. A. and an Mrs., heads the Eng- lish Department. Promising to visit each of the old gang soon, I left the party to keep a very Important engagement, I must have been In too much of a hurry, for suddenly a siren screamed behind me and a strangely familiar voice gruffly said, Where’s the firs? I couldn't believe my eyes! There sat Ted Holt in a policeman's uniform on a motorcycle. W© talked for quite a while re- living the old days , but before I left he wrote out a speeding ticket! Imagine my surprise when I went to pay the fine'. The room was fill- ed with more former classmates, all waiting to pay a similar fine. Teddy must have had quite a busy day! Donna Blair was very put out about being delayed. She Is the pri- vate secretary to the president of Pan American Airlines, Woodle Gibson. Pat Pate and Betty Strawn both proudly showed me their engagement rings. They are working together on an Interior decorating Job In the home of Mrs. Hlnzle Ziegler (Norma Brown). Ray Brewster, owner of Chevrolet Motors, told the Judge that he was Just trying out a new Chevrolet, but he still had to pay. Before Ralph Wilson left the court room, he asked me to visit him and his wife, Ruth, to see their darling little con, Ralph Jr. Ralph al30 said that he and his business partner, Delbert Fellers, had Just recently return- ed from a fashion show In California. They design the very latest In bath- ing suits. He promised to have one created especially for me In their new- est material, plastic. I can hardly wait! My turn to pay my fine was next so I stepped up to the desk. The Judge was, of all people, James Parley. He said that he and John Jones had gone through law school together and John, still a bachelor, was practicing In the East. Just as suddenly as I had appeared at the Party I was next on a plane flying for South America. The hostess came down the aisle asking us to fasten our safety belts for the landing. As I was having trouble with mine, I asked for her assistance. Then I recognized her as Margie Clark. When we landed we hurried to a coffee shop both of us talking at the same time. Sally Medina, she told me, was living In Utah, her husband being a wealthy dude ranch owner. Naomi Williams, also married. Shlrlle Fox Is an airline hostess for another airline. Then the bubble burst and my dream was ended. Today, Just before I began telling you of my adventures in dreams, I received an Invitation In the morning mail to a party.
