Wbdfdfly Someone has defrned a school as the wtll of the people of a drstrrct to pro vrde educatron for thetr chrldren The defrnrtron rs especrallx applrcable to Lonoke where the materral assets of the drstrrct have often changed but the wrll for educatron has remarned exceedrngly strong The frrst rn Lonoke was a subscrrptton grammar school founded by James P Eagle who became Governor of Arkansas rn 1989 and I C llrcl s who also founded the Lonoke Methodrst Church The teacher was W P I letcher Sr Dr Isaac Folsom was Presrdent of the frrst School Board whlch operated a pub lrc tax supported school In 1879 land was purchased and a school burlt and supported by assessments One hundred nrnety seven puprls were enrolled rn nrne grades wrth four teachers J J Doyne was Prrnctpal Between 1880 and 1884 a hrgh school was added wrth O F Russell Supertntendent J J Doyne Prrncrpal and Lettuce M Dodge Edrth Btngham Jennre Farrow and Jennte Reneau Teachers Mr Russell s an nual salary was S900 Among the members of the frrst graduatlng class rn 1886 87 was Mrs E R Robrnson who strll lrves tn Lonoke Her husband rs a Lonoke resrdent and has been a l1fe long supporter of the school Another veteran teacher Mrss D1x1e Stokes served from 1904 1948 and untrl recently was an actrve P T A member The burldrngs were destroyed by frre rn 1885 1900 and 1929 In 1921 I B Abraham Jorned the faculty He was appornted Superrntendent tn 1937 and has held that posrtron contrnuously srnce The drstrrct now covers 204 square mrles and all puprls are transported to the Lonoke School The eleven col ored schools have been consolldated and are now housed on the campus of Carver School rn Lonoke Lonoke rs a member of the North Central Assocratron The whrte school has an enrollment of 1 068 and the colored school has 660 enrollment The school drs trrct operates 21 busses There are 52 teachers 35 whrte and 17 colored The school board members for 1955 56 are Mrs Bessre W Brausford Secretary Chas A Walls Ir Presrdent JoeP Melton Jr Emmett R1chey Elmer Wrll man Iohnn1eRob1nson andC H Clement ALMA MATER Here s to Lonoke dear old Lonoke To the school we love the best Wrth her colors garly flyrng She wrll always stand the test When we leave you we w1ll grreve ou, You'll always be our greatest prrde, And 1ust to show you, how much we owe you, We'll always root for you, Lonoke Hrghl I ' ' ' s ,sf ' t . . .
