It began rather inconspicuously last fall. Admidst abundant victories, and two defeats to perennial champion Mattituck, the soccer team had veiled itself in a proudness that underscored its achievement. Yet this growing feeling had not reached those beyond the team’s membership. But as the soccer team made its way through the first few games of the County Playoffs, the student body began to stir with the anticipation that maybe, just maybe, Longwood did indeed have a team of unique caliber. There had been flurried glimpses of such quality in the past, but they were quickly overshadowed by seemingly inevitable defeat. This time, however, Longwood was not to be denied. The scene that followed this year’s County Championship game, which saw Longwood overcome a highly favored Sachem team 2-1, is one which shall never be forgotten by those who shared in it. The unity of happiness, the sense of accomplishment, the school pride, which left many standing in awe as our student body chanted, in a deafening roar, “We’re from Longwood, we don’t come any prouder ...,” was all fitting tribute to the winning tradition that has been established at Longwood. Several days after Longwood’s soccer team ended the season, losing the Long Island Championship in what was described as the greatest soccer game ever played on Long Island, the basketball and wrestling teams took up the standard as they defeated opponent after opponent. The wrestling team captured the team title as they swept through their schedule undefeated in league matches. Despite placing second in the Tournament Championships at the end of the season, Longwood saw five of its wrestlers capture League championships, and had two of its wrestlers place second and third in the Countys. At the same time the basketball team was running its record to 17-3, best ever in the school’s history. Losing only to Southampton, the team placed second in the League and second in the County in defense. This marked the second year in a row that Longwood was one of the two best defensive teams in the County. They then went on to overwhelm Smithtown in the opening round of the County Playoffs before being nipped bv Islip in the quarterfinals. In the spring, baseball and track shall take their turns reaching for the glory of victory. The baseball team shall be defending the League Championship that they have held for the past two years; the track team will certainly be heard from, boasting a team with great depth and potential. Pride is also found in those teams who, while not fairing as well this season, nevertheless entered each game from a positive standpoint which stemmed from the pride that they had in themselves. We feel that in speaking of Longwood in the years to come, it shall always be necessary to refer to the 68-69 school year, when Longwood’s teams established themselves with the best, and as the best. It was a year when the smallest senior class ever to graduate from our school produced several talented athletes who, together with the underclassmen and an ever-rising school spirit, established one of the athletic mainstays of Suffolk County: Longwood. 120
