© SEED CC I Dedication Man’s life is an endless quest for personal goals. It is the beauty of life than man derives the strength to undertake these quests from his encounters with his fellow man. Extending your hand to help someone in their struggle through life is the strongest love that can he expressed. We are very fortunate to have encountered a man who has always been there with his hand extended whenever we turned to him. He has helped many of us in our personal quests. His efforts on our behalf are countless. He has been the focal point upon which the unity of our class has balanced. Deeply moved with gratitude and proud devotion, we, the class of ’69, dedicate this book to our advisor: Mr. Carl Verdi. 3 frustration Mr. Donald Fingar Mr. Thomas Whitehead Mr. Joseph Carrabus Mr. Arthur Minardi Vice President Mr. John McMahon Jr. Mr. Tyrell Wilson Mr. Charles Roselius Mr. Herbert Kennedy Education Dr. John Mullen District Principal Mr. Arthur Wright | | Hoard President Dear Graduates: As you. the Class of 1069, approach the uncertain future, each of you will look hack upon your years at Longwood High School with a mixture of pride and nostalgia. For. during these significant years of exploration and growth in a world often harsh and cruel, often happy and exhilarating, you have found the strength to go forward and upward to meet the challenges that have been faced by students in the past and that students will face in the future. Here at Longwood. you have been guided and directed by your teachers in your initial training toward your ultimate goals. Through their help and by your own initiative and drive, you have reached a major milestone in your lives. The years at Longwood have served as a basis for the further development of your individual personalities. The emotions of happiness, sadness, and pride have all been an integral part of these vital years. My greatest wish at this important juncture of your lives is that the next stage of your journey takes you far and that you may find rest and friends as you pause at the foot of the mountain. Sincerely, John F. Quirk Principal MR. ROBERT BULLOCK, Assistant Principal You have just completed 13 years of school work, 13 years of minor irritations, or 13 happy years. Homework, discipline and school regulations are behind you. In years to come you will no doubt remember the past 13 years as some of the happiest ones in your entire life. The commencement exercises terminate your direct connections with your school. These exercises, however, are just what the name ‘commencement’ implies. You are commencing to take your place in adult society. 'I o some, this will mean further education and still another commencement. To others, job-hunting and military service are in the offing. The “world is your oyster” is an old cliche that has been repeated at many commencement exercises. Opening that oyster is frequently a difficult task. Those who succeed do so by perseverance, diligence, and ambition. It is my belief that young people of today are more intelligent, more resourceful, and more apt than the generations that have preceded them. More diversified opportunities exist today than at any time in history. I have faith in our youth and fully expect that they will take full advantage of the existing opportunities of this era. Approach your appointed tasks seriously. Use your abilities to the fullest. We who have preceded you, now depend upon you. May you enjoy God’s speed in all your endeavors. Robert E. Bullock Assistant Principal Dear Graduates of 1969: It has been said that we may be sure of two things—death and taxes; hut you, the class of 1969, face another certainty—change! All areas of human understanding and existence have been and will be characterized by an ever increasing rate of change. You, in thirteen years of formal education, have accumulated knowledge, developed understanding, and have been encouraged to think independently and responsibly. We, your teachers, have confidence that you have learned your lessons well and are prepared to accept change and to adapt to new situations. In this way, society has met its responsibility to each of you. May you, with the insights that you have gained, with courage, integrity, and dignity, now go forth prepared to contribute to the continuance of this, our free society. My congratulations to all of you. May each of you know the satisfaction of success in your future endeavors. Sincerely, John J. Lombardi Assistant Principal MR. Not Pictured Ray Jones—Football All-League Linebacker It began rather inconspicuously last fall. Admidst abundant victories, and two defeats to perennial champion Mattituck, the soccer team had veiled itself in a proudness that underscored its achievement. Yet this growing feeling had not reached those beyond the team’s membership. But as the soccer team made its way through the first few games of the County Playoffs, the student body began to stir with the anticipation that maybe, just maybe, Longwood did indeed have a team of unique caliber. There had been flurried glimpses of such quality in the past, but they were quickly overshadowed by seemingly inevitable defeat. This time, however, Longwood was not to be denied. The scene that followed this year’s County Championship game, which saw Longwood overcome a highly favored Sachem team 2-1, is one which shall never be forgotten by those who shared in it. The unity of happiness, the sense of accomplishment, the school pride, which left many standing in awe as our student body chanted, in a deafening roar, “We’re from Longwood, we don’t come any prouder ...,” was all fitting tribute to the winning tradition that has been established at Longwood. Several days after Longwood’s soccer team ended the season, losing the Long Island Championship in what was described as the greatest soccer game ever played on Long Island, the basketball and wrestling teams took up the standard as they defeated opponent after opponent. The wrestling team captured the team title as they swept through their schedule undefeated in league matches. Despite placing second in the Tournament Championships at the end of the season, Longwood saw five of its wrestlers capture League championships, and had two of its wrestlers place second and third in the Countys. At the same time the basketball team was running its record to 17-3, best ever in the school’s history. Losing only to Southampton, the team placed second in the League and second in the County in defense. This marked the second year in a row that Longwood was one of the two best defensive teams in the County. They then went on to overwhelm Smithtown in the opening round of the County Playoffs before being nipped bv Islip in the quarterfinals. In the spring, baseball and track shall take their turns reaching for the glory of victory. The baseball team shall be defending the League Championship that they have held for the past two years; the track team will certainly be heard from, boasting a team with great depth and potential. Pride is also found in those teams who, while not fairing as well this season, nevertheless entered each game from a positive standpoint which stemmed from the pride that they had in themselves. We feel that in speaking of Longwood in the years to come, it shall always be necessary to refer to the 68-69 school year, when Longwood’s teams established themselves with the best, and as the best. It was a year when the smallest senior class ever to graduate from our school produced several talented athletes who, together with the underclassmen and an ever-rising school spirit, established one of the athletic mainstays of Suffolk County: Longwood. 120 J.
