MRS. JAMES RUFFIN MRS. PAUL SUNDHEIM HOMEMAKING MRS. MARJORIE TYLER Chairman DEPARTMENT The Homemaking Department has an objective of helping students to be better homemakers, not just learn to cook and sew, as many people think, but to teach a better understanding of the physical, emotional, and mental development of children; about planning a home; to learn about decorating it attractively; to learn how to spend money so that they get the best values; to prepare for marriage in general; and for living a better and fuller life. 71

FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT MRS. ALFIO Chairman MRS. JOHN CURTIS The purpose of all n od Tn language teaching is communication; first aurally and orally, and then on the medium of reading and writing. In the French German, and Spanish classes of Longwood, the student moves in a logical and pertinent manner from listening and speaking to the reading and writing skills. The textbook material is supplemented by the use of films, filmstrips, records, and related tapes for special work in pronunciation, intonation, comprehension, correct usage, and fluency. In the more advanced courses these aids are also used to help develop appreciation of certain literary selections in the foreign language as presented by native speakers. In addition, a most important aspect of all foreign language teaching is to help develop in the student a sympathetic understanding of the goals and directions of the foreign country, and its people, through a knowledge of its cultural and political features, its heritage, and its contribution to western civilization.
