Several packed a lunch and headed up to the mountains to witness the gorgeous changing of the leaves, and to see William and Mary defeat the University of Virginia on their November 1st Homecoming. SORRY UVA!! UVA HOMECOMING 16 WINTER WONDERLAND You can remember this year by the incredible amount of snow that Farmville received — 38 inches — give or taice a few feet! But what fun we had missing class, sliding down hills on anything we could find, such as: cafeteria trays, garbage can lids, and even closet doors, and the snow ball fights. 19 xci: yf The snow was great until it came time to dig out our cars, wallcing through the blizzard to those classes at the Wynne building, and busting our behinds on the ice! HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE GONE BY SPRING BREAK!!!! MORE SNOW!! 21 SUPER SUNDAE Although Blackwell Dining Hall will never compare to Mom ' s cooking you must admit Rick Johnson and his staff have made a tremendous effort to improve. They have given us theme dinners, a real salad and sandwich bar, and great desserts. One of those great desserts was Super Sundae. This sundae was over three feet tall and had everything on it from whip cream to oreo cookies. The pictures on these two pages show the stages of preparation before everyone dug in!! 22 23 SHOOT YOURSELF . . . This colony, who receives official status as a Fraternity on April 25, 1987, contains men from all walks of life. The TEKE colony has been able to establish a very good reputation on campus through conducting numerous activities. These activities include such things as the United-Way gurney push, raising $1,034.00 and placing first in Live 86, which was a community-wide cleanup program. TEKES have also volunteered time in dealing with programs in our community, such as, SCOPE (senior citizens of Prince Edward Co.), and DAY (Domestic Assistance for You). Our most recent achievements have been the receiving of the IFC Leadership Award as well as the IFC Academic Achievement Award. This colony has the want and desire to grow with Longwood. Our will, desire, hope, and courage have and will help TKE to survive and overcome the obstacles to becoming a successful Fraternity and being able to play an influential part in the excellent Greek System here on Longwood ' s campus. Longwood Coach Cal Luther has been particularly pleased with his team ' s effort and improvement. Our players have worked hard to improve since the season began. said the coach. We have made solid progress, but the most difficult part of our season is ahead of us. Well, the season which began with great promise ended in a 13-14 record. Longwood put forth one of its best efforts of the season but it wasn ' t enough. This year Longwood will lose Kearney, Pittman and senior guard Kevin Ricks. However, a number of young and talented players will return. 136 first row, manager Kelly Church. Bobby Dobson, Gary Austin. Dale Shavers, Darryl Rutley, Kevin Ricl s Anthony Clark not pictured, Tony Good Longwood basketball coach Cal Luther was one of five people inducted into the Murray State University Athletic Hall of Fame in October. Luther, who compiled a 70-60 mark at Longwood in his first five seasons, was the coach who built the foundation upon which Murray State ' s modern day basketball tradition rests. He is the only coach to have led the basketball Racers to the NCAA Tournament, and three of his teams were ranked in the top twenty. Longwood is very proud of coach Cal Luther, and wishes him much success in the following seasons. 137 first row. Assistant Coach Loretta Coughlin, Karen Boska, Caren Forbes, Head Coach Shirley Duncan, second row, Managers Lee Ann Goodson, Jill Everett, Manager Michelle Krolikowski, Barbie Burton, Kita Chambers, Deirdre McDaniels, Angee Middleton, India Walton, Angie Hill, Sandy Rawdon, Jennifer Crusade Longwood College women ' s basketball coach Shirley Duncan approaches the upcoming season with mixed emotions. The Lady Lancers will be more experienced, but youth still dominates. We ' re more experienced than we were last year, but we ' re young, said coach Duncan, whose team finished 8-17 after back-to-back 16-win campaigns. We also have a very tough schedule with five Division I opponents, but we ' re looking to improve on last season ' s record. While the 1986-87 edition of Lady Lancer basketball will have eight returning squad members, just four of those players have considerable experience. Only seniors Caren Forbes and Karen Boska, and juniors Angie Hill and Barbie Burton have played more than one year. 138 BASKETBALL Co-captains on this year ' s team, the 5-7 Forbes and the 6-1 Boska have been starters for three seasons. Forbes averaged 13.6 points and handed out 126 assists last season. She is Longwood ' s all-time leader in assists with 371 and has scored 1,046 points. Boska has been consistent over the years. She averaged 9.9 points and 7.3 rebounds in 1985-86. She has 741 points and 580 rebounds for her career. Fm looking for outstanding seasons from Forbes and Boska, said Duncan. They have been an important part of our program since arriving on campus. We accomplished a great deal as a team and as individuals, said coach Duncan of her squad ' s 13-14 season. Fm very proud of what we were able to do and the kids are too. After losing last year ' s leading rebounder and scorer Melanie Lee to an academic internship before the season began, Longwood finished third in the Mason Dixon regular season race. L.C. coach Loretta Coughlin is shown providing instruction to some of the campers who took part in the college ' s first Lady Lancer Baslcetball Camp last August. Another camp is planned for the summer of 1987. 1 « 139 FIELD HOCKEY More than 30 former Longwood field hockey players journeyed back to Farmville in October to help the College observe the 60th anniversary of hockey at Longwood. The highlight of Longwood ' s anniversary celebration was provided by two members of the 1927 Honorary Hockey Varsity who proudly proclaimed We were the first. At the conclusion of the varsity game, a contest was played between alumnae and the 1986 Lady Lancers. Mrs. Webb, who lives in Buffalo Junction, Virginia, showed she hadn ' t forgotten how to play when she demonstrated a vigorous hit with a borrowed hockey stick just before the alumnae game began. I still remember the thrill of running down the field with the ball, said Mrs. Webb. I haven ' t forgotten those days even though I haven ' t seen a game played since then. I enjoyed it very much. I just loved to run. Both Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Wilson, have sent daughters to Longwood over the years, and both siblings have followed in their mothers ' footsteps in the teaching profession. Along with Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Wilson, Marguerite Morton represented the beginning years of Longwood Field Hockey. In all, more than 30 former Hockey players attended the game and reception. 140 K ' sy tl ' yv ' ' U  . • ■ • W - ' , fs ' • :S«ar ' « t - j ' t - u ' first row, Sheri Lawhorn, Kris Meaney, Claye Conkwright, Diane Bingler, Theresa Labyak. Sue Finnie is now in her second year as the Longwood field hockey coach. Last year her team compiled an 11-4 mark, the best hockey record at Longwood since the 1975 team (16-5-4) advanced to the national tournament. Finnie has a career record of 90-76-8 in thirteen years. I ' m pleased with the season as a whole, said LC coach Sue Finnie. Every game is tough because seven freshman are starting, but we have played with a lot of intensity. We ' re moving the ball well. We need to improve, however, on pressuring the opposition. 141 142 GOLF Longwood ' s men ' s golf team concluded its best fall season ever October 15, winning a four-team match at Longwood Golf Course. Led by senior Ty Bordner, the Lancers shot 305 to beat Radford (309), Virginia Military (320) and Randolph Macon (348). Longwood finished with a match record of 5-1, an overall mark of 44-13 (including tournaments) and a best-ever team stroke average of 317.6 for 10 rounds. The Lancers had a second place, two fourths and a sixth place in four fall tournament appearances. Five Longwood golfers shot in the 70 ' s for the first time ever in the final match. Bordner carded a 75 to finish second overall, and Ron Hatch shot 76 to end up third. Lancer freshman Kevin Haskins had the second best stroke average on the team for the fall with an average of 79 for eight rounds. Injuries suffered in an auto accident forced Haskins to withdraw from school in October, but he expects to return in January. Bordner edged Haskins for low stroke honors. The senior had an average score of 78.5 for 10 rounds. Richard Hardy had an average score of 81.3 for 10 rounds. Mark Marshall averaged 81.5 for 10 rounds. Hatch, a veteran, averaged 82.5 for eight rounds and first year golfer Tony Good was just a shade behind at 82.6. Richard Hardy, Ty Bordner, Mark Marshall, Kevin Haskins, Tony Good, Ron Hatch, Coach Steve Nelson. 143 GOLF Dr. Barbara Smith, women ' s golf coach at Longwood for 20 years, has been chosen to lead NCAA women ' s golf contingent which will play in Japan, December 10-12. Dr. Smith is the first coach of a non- Division I team to be selected in the six years that the NCAA has fielded a women ' s team in the competition. Naturally, I feel quite honored but also very surprised, said Dr. Smith, coach of Longwood ' s NCAA Division II Program. There are so many good coaches out there I couldn ' t imagine why I was selected. However, Dr. Smith was selected by the NCAA Women ' s Golf Committee and approved by the NCAA Council. Congratulations to Dr. Smith for a job well done!! Longwood has earned a reputation of having one of the top Division II women ' s golf programs in the country over the past six years. Last season the Lady Lancers placed fifth in the National Small College Tournament, and won three Division I tournaments. Longwood was third in the National Small College Tournament in 1985, after finishing second in 1984. LC was third in the AIAW Division II event in 1981. Golfers from Longwood have qualified for the NCAA Championship each of the past three years, and the last two years Tina Barrett has been the top Division II finisher in the event. In the process, the Lady Lancers finished the fall season with their lowest team stroke average in history — a 318.8 Longwood Junior Tina Barrett, a two-time Ail-American and the defending National Small College Tournament champ, has been nominated for the Broderick Award in women ' s golf for 1985-86. 145 front, 1 to r. When I first arrived in 1977, things were certainly different from today, she reminisces. The team practiced in French Gym, where there wasn ' t enough space to set up all our equipment at one time. The level of gymnastics was very low, and my first year we had only two girls on scholarship. Things began to change when Budd recruited Maryland gymnast Kathy Idelson, who went on to become Longwood ' s first AU-American athlete in any sport. Thanks to Kathy, people began to hear about Longwood gymnastics, and we received inquiries from many top-level gymnasts. After taking competitors to National Championships for four years in a row and having them place well, our reputation began to improve. 146 GYMNASTICS Today the Lancers are competitive in both the state and region, and coach Budd has produced several state regional champions, as well as National competitors. In recognition of her coaching ability she has twice received the award for Longwood Female Coach of the Year. Change and consistency could both be key words for the 86-87 Longwood gymnastics team. The Lancers competed for the first time under the United States Gymnastics Federation sponsorship, rather than under the NCAA. The honor was voted by the VISA coaches. Posipanko, who led Longwood to its third state title in five years this fall, has an outstanding 88-41-18 record in eight years with the Lancers. He guided LC to a 13-5-2 mark and a 14th place national ranking in Division II. Also, picked as VISA ' s top coach in 1982, Posipanko led Longwood to state titles in 1982 and 1984. Longwood ' s Jeff Robinson and Mark Kremen combined on the decisive goal as the Lancer soccer team stunned highly regarded Christopher-Newport 2-1 in overtime November 19 to capture its third Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association Championship in the past five years. With less than two minutes left in the second overtime and the game tied 1-1, Robinson raced toward the Captains ' goal and fired a cross pass just before he went out of bounds. The kick went straight to Kremen on the opposite side of the goal. The junior knocked in the pass for a 2-1 Lancer lead and as it turned out, the victory. I was back watching at first, Kremen explained later. I thought he (Robinson) was going to shoot, but he had no angle. Roz hit a rocket and I just stepped in and hit it. Ironically, it was Kremen who scored the tying goal in the second overtime of the 1984 VISA Championship game which produced a 3-3 tie with Mary Washington. The Lancers were co-State Champs that season after winning the title outright in 1982. The victory was a high water mark for the Lancers, who missed out on a bid to the NCAA Division II Playoffs because of several late season losses. Christopher-Newport, which ended up 18-5 and ranked 10th in the Division III, had beaten the Lancers 3-1, November 1. A team with tremendous quickness, the Captains numbered two-time Division III champ UNC- Greensboro among their victims this season. Coach Rich Posipanko felt this year ' s title game was the most exciting of Longwood ' s VISA title matches. This one came against an outstanding team, a team with a lot of quick athletes , said the coach. The game went end to end. We played hard all the way after they scored. We outplayed them the rest of the game. 148 THE 1986-87 LONGWOOD SOCCER TEAM Four members of Longwood ' s State Champion soccer team have been named to the Division II All- South Atlantic Region soccer team, voted by the region coaches. Freshmen John Barone and Mike Edge, Junior Jeff Robinson and senior Erick Karn were the Lancers named All-Region. The foursome played a big role in Longwood ' s 13-5-2 season and 2-1 triumph over Christopher- Newport in the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association title game November 19. Robinson and Karn are backs while Barone is a forward and Edge a midfielder. Barone, Edge and Robinson had previously been named to the first team of the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association All-State selections. Karn made the second team along with goalkeeper Dave Goerkle, and midfielder Mahfoud Kyoud. Longwood landed seven spots on the AU-VISA Eastern Division teams announced earlier. 149 TENNIS Longwood ' s women ' s tennis coach Bill Moore is excited about this years squad. The Lady Lancer ' s performance in their first three outings brings hope of future success. This year ' s squad is experienced with seven returnees and has an infusion of new talent that will help guarantee success. Senior Ann Pitzer will lead the team, playing in the number one spot. Coach Moore thinks that sophomores Susan Miller, Lisa Storm, Elizabeth Cho and Traci Moore will be the most improved because they are older and won ' t make freshman mistakes. The other veterans on the squad are junior Diane Rogers and sophomore Mary Lynn Lawman. Newcomers include freshmen Laura Crigger, Lauri Labyak, Cassie Merritt, Sarah Thomson and junior Marieska Weigel. Coach Moore will look towards Crigger and Labyak for help in doubles and hopes to use the fall season to gain experience for all the players to use in the spring season. Longwood ' s coach is optimistic saying we ' ll be better after losing only a couple of players and we have many returnees who have improved. We ' re looking for a good season. Longwood ended fall play with a 6-3 victory over RMC October 9. Coach Moore ' s squad had a 2-4 mark in the fall. We feel we will have a competitive team in the spring, said Coach Moore. We have a number of young players who gained some valuable experience through the fall season. Good luck to the Spring Squad!!!! front row, Lisa Storm. Coach Linda Elliott, Tracie Amos, Kris Meyer. Teresa Carr, Mary Beth Friga, Stephanie Coukos, Karen Moye (student asst.), not pictured, Mick Hill (student asst.) Coach Linda Elliott ' s 1986 squad features youth and inexperience. Although young, the squad displays a positive attitude. Team captain Mary Beth Friga and Joanna Marquez offer the only experience from last year ' s squad. Elliott ' s team has shown steady improvement and mid-way through the 1986 campaign has already doubled their 1985 win total. The team ' s finesse and talent have given Elliott the opportunity to implement a fairly sophisticated offense. Pre-season expectations were high for the Lady Lancers and thus far they have lived up to them. 152 VOLLEYBALL Longwood on the defensive. Coach Nelson, now in his seventh season at the helm, has compiled a record of 49-61-1. Currently the Lancers stand 8-3 with two matches remaining, already assured of their best season ever. Longwood has faced some tough Division I schools this season. The Lancers got off to somewhat of a slow start, but have been on fire the second half of the season. Longwood got an impressive first place finish in the initial Virginia Collegiate Tournament held in Newport News Feb. 6-7, as Fitzgerald, Stukes, Whitman and Howard won state titles in their respective weight classes. We have a solid program and the team has really worked hard as evidenced by our dual meet record, states Nelson. These, and other brave people, saved many lives because the fire alarms would not go off. Even though the building was filling with black smoke. It seems that because of faulty electrical wiring a speaker caught on fire. When the owner tried to throw the speaker out the window, the tie dye that was hanging from the ceiling immediately ignited. The room was gutted and the floor up above melted. The fire was contained to one end of the hall, however, the smoke damage was extensive. There were a few minor injuries but basicall y Frazier residents were able to exit the building unscathed. CHI is an honorary organization whose essential purpose is to promote and maintain a spirit of cooperation among members of the college community. It is the aim of CHI to foster respect for Longwood and loyalty to its academic program and extracurricular activities. CHI ' s members are of the student body. They are present and working in many activities and interests at the College. Much of CHI ' s work goes unseen by the majority, being recognized by only a few. Often CHI ' s work is visible: signs on the sidewalks, walks at night, and letters to the student body encouraging support of College functions and academic excellence. The banner of CHI is white with the Gothic letters CHI in blue below the abstract of the Rotunda. It appears on special occasions as an indicator of CHI support. The consistently good work of students, organizations, faculty, and staff receives commendations in the spring of each year. But always remember, CHI is you the students of Longwood. CHI represents enthusiasm, pride, honor, loyalty, and character. Through you CHI works to pr omote spirit by binding together all the different elements that comprise Longwood. The spirit of CHI, challenges you to reach your fullest potential. CHI and Longwood spirit would not exist without campus spirit because CHI is you. YOU are the spark, YOU are the flame to whom CHI burns. 219 GRADUATION Clockwise, are various pictures of the 1987 LONGWOOD GRADUATES. The last picture is of the speaker Mylle Bell. GOOD LUCK! ' i -?r 220 221 MY PAGE ... I would like to take a few moments to reflect over this past year. It has gone by so fast, and now its time to find a job and use all of those skills we acquired at Longwood. Graduation is a scary and exciting time for us seniors. Some of us will get married, some already have careers lined up, and some are continuing their education. But most of the seniors do not have the slightest idea what the future holds. We finally shed those security blankets that Longwood has lent us for the past four years. We will leave behind friends that have shared the four most intense years of our lives. Some of those friends we will never see again. But nonetheless, we leave Longwood wearing only our new skills and open to rejection. Just remember seniors, you can even turn rejection into a positive experience. Use your fourteen goals, they don ' t become useless after graduation. Only you can set standards for your self, and only you can create the barriers in your mind. If you strive for excellence you will reach it. Live with the knowledge that everything you do will come back to you and your life will be more pleasant. I wish you much success, but more important is happiness. May God bless each of you and may you always remember the bond of the blue and white spirit. Your Editor, Janie L. Warren 222 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks to Beth Camillo for collecting all the data and pictures for the sports section. Thanks to Susan Dillon for doing an excellent job as treasurer. Thanks to the second floor of North Cunningham for all your support and help (you know who you guys are) A special thanks to my roommate, Kay Harrell, for her endless words of encouragement and helping hands. Thanks to my own family members. Sonny, Patsy, Ken and Jimmy, for pitching in and helping with the tedious clerical duties.
