Causes Of Failure m Knowing things, but not being able to tell them. Eccessive fondness for novel reading. Sometimes natural-born laziness, but never, never, lack of sense! Scientific study of the genus homo, to the exclusion of all else. Taking the rest cure in the infirmary too often and too long The spitefulness of teachers who just wouldn ' t pass you, anyhow, even if you did good work. An ordinary girl ' s trying to do as much as two extraordinary girls should undertake. Inability of the teachers to understand your thoughts. Being so terribly afraid of a teacher that it scares you to death to recite. Studying certain teachers more than the subjects taught. Spending too much time before the mirror preparing for the parlor branches of study. The singular forgetfulness of teachers who think that you have nobody else ' s work to do but theirs. Spooning with our cases The injustice of the faculty in not being disposed to excuse you when you wish to gaze out of the window and think the long, long, thoughts of youth, rather than those of geometry, composition, or physics. The deplorable failure of the faculty to appreciate the real value of the promenade course in geology, which takes intense interest in the paving stones of Farmville.

To Joan Of Arc Or Youth With head thrown back And eyes strained upward but ever forward, Onward she gallops Into the future. Standing in her saddle, With eyes of vision and of truth She views the distant land, And fearlessly moves onward to the goal ahead. Horse ' s feet planted firmly on the ground, Onward she gallops. With tears of pity She views the slain Upon the battle ground. (How can she whose love and faith Forever call. How can she see and still move on?) Weeping with those who weep, Ever weeping. Onward she gallops In sympathy. Gallop on, O gentle Joan, gallop on! Soul of love. Thy faith in friends Hath kept thy spirit Ever living in the heart of youth; Has permeated mind and hart. Till we cluster ' round thy figure. Kneeling at thy side, Seeking guidance from thy gentle hand. Drinking deep the inspiration From thine upward lifted eyes. Gallop on, O happy Jo an, gallop on. While we gather ' round thy statue. Clasping hands in friendship ' s lasting tie. And we pledge ourselves to follow — Where thou leadest we will follow — Gallop on, O happy Joan, gallop on! — G. Elizabeth Rawls As printed from The 1925 Virginian
