Many times we pass things by without a second thought and later regret not Hngering longer for a deeper appreciation. How many of us, for example, have stopped to notice the striking work of art located on the north side of the mall? Placed there by Chi in 1963, it serves the functional purpose of a directional marker to give the passer-by a quick view of the four points of the compass. But one who would linger longer will find in bold relief the Greek figures representing the four winds of the earth. He finds the barefoot, playful Zephyrus, the west wind, son of Dawn and husband of the goddess of flowers. He sees Eurus, the east wind, who carries fruit as he flies and whose warm breath was said to melt the snow and bring the rain. He observes Notus, the south wind, who brings the quietness of mist upon the land and the sea. He is impressed by bearded Boreas, the north wind, who, trumpet in hand, looks ominous for the power he is capable of unleashing. It is interesting and sometimes surprising what a closer look reveals. In the pages that follow we have tried to give you a closer look at Longwood. Like the four winds of Greek mythology, the Fre shmen — spirited and friendly, the Sophomores — active and wannly loyal, the Juniors — gentle and serious, and the Seniors — mature and potentially powerful, play their part on the Longwood scene and are represented in their classes and campus life. With the hope that throughout 1 ife you may have the opportunity for a closer look and a deeper appreciation of the world about you, the staff of The 1965 VIRGINIAN dedicates this book to you — Longwood Student.
