Colgate W. Darden V - ' f p : ' • fr ■' W£ • W ' LIBRARY HALL Miss Burger, Ann Ross, Becky Fizer, Ann Jones, Georgia Jacks Senior Class GEORGIA M. JACKSON BECKY FIZER ANN C. ROSS JONES President I ice-President Secretary Treasur Returning to Longwood for the last time, the Seniors of 1956 set their four-cornered caps firmly on their heads and settled down with their lesson plans to make Senior Build- ing their red and white haven. Along with the happy pride in being Seniors at last, there was also the ever-present regret of each pass- ing day which carried with it finality in all its moments of happiness and sadness. With the assistance and guidance of Miss Eliza- beth Burger we pushed these thoughts far back in our minds as we plunged with full force into the business of being a Senior. With this distinction came the fullest rec- ognition of the responsibilities it entailed. Crammed between the more serious moments of duties, worries, and student teaching were the glorious hours spent on the stage and in the gym as we presented a winning Circus, and saw Silver Rhapsody become a reality and a living memory in our hearts. As the year draws to a close, we sincerely hope that we have accepted wisely our obliga- tions — to our school, to our work, to our friends. Upon graduation we must leave be- hind all those things that have become most dear to us. However, we take with us the happiest of memories of the four wonderful years we spent in this school we chose to serve — Longwood College. After two years of plan- ning and working, what a thrill to realize that this name stood for us! We returned in September ready to plunge into a new year with our green and white spirits high and with Charlie Hop as our guide. Some of us came early to assist in the orientation of the freshmen, and we quickly became acquainted with our sister class. We soon settled down in our new building among old friends and stacks of books. When Circus arrived, Patty Parker and Carolyn Clark led us through an unusual dramatization of modern jazz. Carolyn reigned as class representative; Sara Lou Wendenburg filled the role of ringmaster. Before the curtain fell on Circus, the Juniors were working on another project — our forthcoming dance. On February 18, under Jackie Sawyer ' s capable leadership, the mysticism of the Orient was charmingly revealed in Golden Splendor. Participa- tion in the song contest, color rush, and sing kept us actively engaged; and with the coming of spring, we were once again involved in the festivities of May Day. We treasure the memories of our three years of college, but we look forward to our final one as the Senior Class of ' 57. F. Raine, vice-president; L. Kuhn, president; Mr. French, sponsor; A. W. Miss Weddle, who aided and in- spired us so faithfully throughout the entire year, deserves much of the credit for our success. Our skit, Gypsy Caravan, took second place; and our float, a horse-drawn gypsy wagon, placed first. Suzanne Faison, our representative to Circus Court, also served as Animal Trainer. Returning from the Christmas holiday, we found ourselves busy. Examinations were upon us, but first on the agenda was Sopho- more Production. Under the direction of Ann DeAlba and Jean Hopkins, we pres- ented Dutch Treat. The big event of spring was May Day. We were proud to have our class so well repre- sented with the following on the court: Linda Chambers, Traci Faison, Anita Heflin, Cle Koons, Carole Stroupe, and Libby White. With mixed feelings we approach the next important occasion of our Sophomore year — graduation. We shall miss our Senior sis- ters, but we look forward to having, for the first time, a younger sister class. We hope that we can assume this responsibility with as much loyalty and spirit as our sisters of the Class of 1956 have had. Carolyn Kelly, cr. As we became accustomed to our new pattern of life, it was suddenly interrupted by sounds of On Your Knees, Rats! The day of torment over, Carol Sandidge and Delo Dove were given the honors of Best Rat and Second Best Rat. We were happy to have selected as our class sponsor, another who was new at Long- wood, Miss Betty Moore. She helped us or- ganize our first class activity, a skit for circus, ABC Land. Louise Norman was our class representative on the Circus Court. A cheer was raised, and rat hats flew as our hockey team won over the Sophomores, as well as over the Juniors and Seniors. Louise He ier captured the tennis champion- ship for the ' 59 class. As the year progressed past the dreaded examinations, we began working on produc- tion. Under the leadership of Vicki Brinkley and Nancy Brubeck, Quicksand was quite a hit. We were very happy to have on May Court one of our classmates, Betty Brown Culpepper. A year is now at an end. House Council Another call down! is a familiar cry heard by the members of House Council, but enforcing discipline is just one of the duties performed by the members of the council. The purpose of the House Council is to formulate and enforce policies and regula- tions pertaining to dormitory life. With the capable leadership of the house and hall presidents, these policies have been success- ful. These house presidents — Betty Shackle- ford Ellison, Florence Pollard, Carolyn Waugaman, and Dot Boswell — have worked faithfully at their jobs. Our house mothers and hostesses have given their time to make House Council a more efficient organization. They are Mrs. Eastham, Miss Hamner, Mrs. Walton, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Keller, Mrs. Rex, and Mrs. Holladay. We are also grateful to Miss Gleaves and Miss Moore for their guidance. The officers of House Council this year were Muriel Boswell, president; Anne Sny- der, vice-president; Sara Lou Wendenburg, secretary; and Gayle Peoples, treasurer. Student Standards The Student Standards Committee works to bring about a spirit of cooperation in the solution of problems between the students, faculty, and administration. By sharing sug- gestions and criticisms members of botb groups will be benefited. The most important accomplishment for the year was the realization of an effective plan for serving cafeteria-style breakfast. Other projects of the committee were to work with faculty for a better time system, to work with the YWCA in collecting donations for the College Chest, and to initiate a new cus- tom of saying grace at the evening meal. At present, Student Standards is working with the Student Government Association on a plan which would make the Committee one of the major organizations on campus. It is hoped that the work of the Committee and its influence can be strengthened. Loretta Brooking served as chairman of the Committee; Margurete Franklin, as sec- retary; Sue Taylor, as chairman of regula- tions committee; and Gale Branch, as chair- man of the Year ' s Calendar. Alpha Kappa Gamma Alpha Kappa Gamma is a national hon- orary society formed for the purpose of recognizing students who have shown them- selves outstanding in leadership and service. The society seeks to he of service to Long- wood and to our fellow students, to foster high ideals and to preserve the spirit of Joan in our college life. Toybox was the theme for our October Circus. Becky Fizer was general chairman, and Jackie Marshall reigned as queen with her attendants: Carolyn Clark, Traci Faison, and Weedie Norman. Sara Lou Wenden- burg was selected to be ring master, and Traci Faison was animal trainer. Members of Joan Circle were pleased that Georgia Jackson was national secretary, and that those who attended the fall conven- tion at the University of South Carolina en- joyed a worthwhile program. Halls in the dormitories were bright and beautiful for Christmas in response to the door decoration contest which we sponsored. Our spring project was directed toward in- creasing the funds of the Dabney S. Lan- caster Scholarship. 90 Kappa Delta Pi The Beta Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education, was founded in 1928, to promote a closer bond among students of education and to en- courage high professional, intellectual, and personal standards. The officers for the past year were the fol- lowing: Ann Jones, president; Anne Brook- ing, vice-president; Loretta Brooking, secre- tary; Joan Harvey, treasurer; and Shirley Wilbourne, historian. Miss Lucy Adams, principal of the Farmville Elementary School, was our advisor. Our programs have been of varied nature centered around education. In October we initiated eleven girls into Kappa Delta Pi, and in November we had our annual banquet for our new members. This year the banquet was in honor of Dr. J. P. Wynne. At our January meeting we had a discussion per- taining to student teaching. One of the most interesting events of the year was an inspir- ing talk concerning teaching as a career, given by Dr. Earl Boggs. Initiation of new members was held in March, and a picnic was given in their honor. Also in March Ann Jones traveled to A and M College at Stillwater, Oklahoma, to at- tend the National Kappa Delta Pi Convoca- tion. First row: S. Dyer, A. Jones. Second row: E. Webb, A. W. Thomas, P. Donald- Pi Delta Epilson Pi Delta Epsilon is a national honorary journalistic fraternity. It is the purpose of the fraternity to elevate the cause of journ- alism, to foster the mutual welfare of student puhlications, to develop the truest fraternal spirit among its members, to encourage loyalty to their Alma Mater, and to reward the journalists working on the student puh- lications for their efforts, services, and ac- complishments by admission to its member- ship. Pi Delta Epsilon also seeks to promote on campus a closer coordination between the various college publications and to give rec- ognition to students who have worked for one of the three major publications. This year Jackie Marshall served as presi- dent; Judy Billet, vice-president; Phyllis Nurney, secretary; and Mary Jo Hutchinson, treasurer. Dr. Marvin Schlegel acted as our able advisor. This fall thirteen new members were initiated: Judy Billet, Anne Brooking, Adele Donaldson, Shirley Kemp, Nancy Lenz, Win- nie Louhoff, Margaret Miller, Virginia Obenchain, Gayle Peoples, Frances Raine, Marion Ruffin, Jeanne Saunders, and Caro- line Stoneman. The dominant tradition of the fraternity is service. Through service, we seek to strengthen and support campus publications by bringing staff members together on a com- mon ground. Future Teachers of America Future Teachers of America seeks to pro- mote professional leadership, to further the activities of the National Education Associa- tion, to study the practices of the teaching profession, and to develop desirable quali- ties in its members in order that they may be good leaders in the field of education. The J. L. Jarman chapter of Future Teach- ers of America was organized at Longwood College in 1930. The members are selected from juniors and seniors who have been rec- ommended by their department heads for outstanding qualifications as future teachers. In the fall forty-one new members were re- ceived. National Education Week was observed by the group ' s inviting Dr. Earl R. Boggs, Chairman of the Department of Education, to speak in assembly. Other activities of the year included continuing work on the F.T.A. file in the library and helping to organize high-school F.T.A. chapters. We, the J. L. Jarman chapter of F.T.A., wish to express our appreciation to Dr. Earl R. Boggs, our advisor, and to the following officers: Betty Jane Ellison, president; Mary Ann Maddox, vice-president; Lee Hayes, secretary; Shirley Kemp, treasurer; and Joan Harvey, librarian. The purposes of the organization are to advance the cause of scientific study of social problems and to instill in the members of the society high ideals of scholarship, the attitude and methods of science, and the de- sire for social service. The Longwood College chapter, which is the Virginia Gamma chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, was established on this campus in 1927 by Dr. James Walmsley, professor emeritus. The goal of the group this year was to bring the organization to the understanding and heart of the students. We have had many interesting programs this year which have helped us fulfill our purposes. The chapter was sponsored by Dr. Marvin Schlegel. It has as a main objective the professional development of college home- economics students. The Club works toward their objective by (1) participating in promoting the objec- tives and programs of the American Home Economics Association, (2) promoting friendly association among faculty and stu- dents interested in home economics, (3) helping students meet and know people who have attained recognition in home economics professions, (4) working together to share with others enthusiasm for home economics, (5) seeking an understanding among people of all nations, and (6) encouraging graduat- ing seniors to become individual members of the American Home Economics Association. Some of the outstanding activities of our club this year were participating in the Na- tional Home Economics Convention at Wash- ington, D. C, participating in the State Home Economics Convention at Richmond, presenting a fashion show for the student body, and entertaining high-school students. The officers of our club are the following: president, Jo Maxey; vice-president, Mar- garet Terrell; secretary, Elizabeth Pancake; treasurer, Jane Wood; and reporter, Becky Blair. Richmond Club The Richmond Club of 1955- ' 56 started its new year very successfully with one hun- dred per cent participation from the fresh- men arriving from Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico Counties. Our president, Mary Ann Barnett, and members welcomed the new girls with a pleasant fall picnic. Again this year the club members raised money at our booth at Circus. During the Christmas holidays our alumnae gave us a soda party in Richmond for the purpose of talking to prospective students. Following the holidays, the sectional clubs held their annual White Elephant Sale, which proved to be quite a success. At our spring picnic the officers for next year were elected. We know that the coming year will be a good one under the excellent leadership of our sponsor, Miss Frances Maddox, who has devoted much of her time to the Richmond Club. We are proud of our members who re- ceived the honor of being in Who ' s Who and those who were elected to other high honors and offices. Our other officers for this vear were Char- lotte Chadwick, vice-president, and Judith Elliott, secretary-treasurer. 98 E. Webb, M. L. James, M. J. Hutchinson, P. Elmore, T. Worthington, M. Our first concert was presented on November 30 at John Marshall High School in Richmond for the students there. The Christmas season soon followed with a concert at Randolph- Macon College in Ashland and our own an- nual concert here. With the combined choirs we sang selections from Handel ' s Messiah. Other major activities were a trip to Lynchburg to E. C. Glass High School and our Spring Concert in April at Longwood. We remember our production of Dido and Aeneas, an opera by Henry Purcell. We also made appearances at the inaug- uration of our President, Dr. Francis G. Lankford, in December and on Founder ' s Day in March. We concluded our year by singing several selections at the graduation ceremonies. Baptist Student Union With Christ the Great Difference as our theme, the B.S.U. began its year with a pre- school retreat at Camp Greenbay. Then fol- lowed a varied program. The first week at school included such activities as a meeting with the Baptist freshmen, the Union party, and Join the Church Sunday. In November a bus load of us went to Roanoke for the State Convention, where we heard many outstanding speakers. December was a short month but one full of activities — a Christmas party, building the Nativity scene, a student-night program with the emphasis on missions, and the Lottie Moon Offering. Just to add a bit of spice we sponsored Cheer- ful Cherub Week before examinations. By the first of February, we were ready for our Youth Revival and banquet. The Rev. JolmTubbs led our Youth Revival, and our Gay Nineties banquet was a big suc- cess. During our Vocational Emphasis Week in March, we focused our attention on Chris- tian homemaking and teaching. Other spring activities included a trip to the Baptist Home, a choir concert, a program at the Uni- versity of Richmond, spring retreat, and the annual picnic. 105 First row: M. Robertson. Duartc. Granddaughters Club The Granddaughters ' Club was organized to bring together all present students who are daughters or granddaughters of alumnae of Longwood and to interest girls who may be future students of the college. This year twenty-eight new members were initiated into the group. Our activities during the year have in- cluded fun and recreation as well as work. In the fall we had our initiation party. At Circus time we all worked together to dec- orate our booth in its traditional colors of green and purple. We also helped in the alumnae office in sending out alumnae let- ters and magazines. On Founders ' Day in March we acted as hostesses to show the re- turning alumnae and guests the many changes that have taken place on our cam- pus. To Miss Wall, our faithful advisor, who with her interest and ability helped to make this a happy year, and to our efficient officers, Frances Riane, president; Anne Savedge, vice-president; and Cornelia Anne Batte, secretary-treasurer, we say thank you. We, the granddaughters, are proud to be a part of Lonewood College. Chi Muriel Olive Boswell Mary Priscilla Davis Carolyn E. Blazer Awards Athletic Association Council The Athletic Association Council is com- posed of four major officers elected by the student body, of the managers of the various sports chosen by the officers, and of the ad- visor, Miss Olive T. Her. Each year the A. A. sponsors the Color Cup Contest. Sister classes support each other, and those winning the most events are allowed to have their colors displayed on the cup during the following year. Also under A.A. ' s sponsorship are the Song Contest, this year won by the Sophomore Class, whose entry was judged most original, and Color Rush, won by Red and White, whose fast runners put their colors on the greater num- ber of buildings. We enjoyed a varied program of sports. The varsity hockey team ' s record of succes- sive victories was marred when they were defeated by Westhampton College. The team ' s able captain and manager were res- pectively Louise Wilder and Patsv Hamner, girls who led in participation in the State Hockey Tournament held at the College of William and Mary. Managed by Loretta Kuhn, and captained by Jane Lohr, the varsity basketball team also had a successful season. First row: D. Brothers, D. Winder, M. Davis, J. Lohr. Second row: C. Wolfe, A. Miller. H 2 Club This year the H2O Club fulfilled its pur- pose of promoting interest in swimming. In the fall Peanuts Winder was elected to head our annual Christmas swimming pag- eant. The theme Carols by Candlelight was developed by swimming groups signify- ing popular Christmas carols. The musical background was furnished by recordings of Mr. Carson at the organ, by a group from the Longwood Choir, and by an ensemble from our student body. As usual, the forma- tion of an H2O with lighted candles was per- formed by the club members. Much of the success of the pageant was due to the dilig- ence of various members: Patsy Hamner. props manager; Jackie Pond, costume man- ager; and Anne Snyder, publicity manager. Much was due to the inspiration and guid- ance of our new faculty advisor. Miss Weddle. The Club would like also to thank members of the student body who worked with the pageant in any way and to commend them for their fine showing. In the spring a fully synchronized pageant was presented by the Club for the first time. Mary Ann Barnett was elected chairman. The theme was Dreamer ' s Holiday. The officers for the year were Patsy Ham- ner, president; Loretta Kuhn, secretary; and Audrey Owen Beale, treasurer. 119 ,} ■■' • - LONGWOOD HOUSE 120 Sitting: G. Jackson, secretary; N. L. It does not seem possible that we have taken all the pictures and typed all the copy and that now the entire book is ready to go to press. To the following, we would like to say that we have enjoyed the association of working with them in publishing this annual: Mr. T. A. McCorkle, our advisor for his advice, understanding, and endless patience in working with the staff. Miss Nancy Foster for her valuable service as literary advisor. Miss Virginia Bedford for her help as our art consultant. The student body, faculty, and administration for their co-operation and interest. The staff for all the typing, walking with the photographer, pasting, and glueing they did in producing the ' 56 Virginian. Andre Studio for its excellent photography. Lynchburg Engraving Company for its advice and cooperation on the lay out and art work. C. W. Warthen Company for printing this book. For Caroline Stoneman. editor of the 1957 Virginian, and Gayle Peoples, business man- ager, we wish all the success and pleasure that we have enjoyed in publishing the 1956 Vir- ginian. Helen P.
