With a gay march the Freshman Band smartly leads the grand parade. And what a noisy gang they are — top-heavy elephants and swaying giraffes and zebras, cake walking negroes, Popeye and his compatriots from Spinachovia, familiar folk from Mother Gooseland, and ridiculous clowns of every description. Around and around the big top they circle while the spectators cheer. Then as a nifty ring master steps out and snaps his whip, they disappear behind the scenes. The master of ceremonies with his booming voice an- nouncing the various acts from under a high top-hat sounds suspiciously like Will Scott. First the Freshman Band entertains as well known movie stars stroll out to perform a variety of clever numbers. Then the Sophomores present a group of negro songs with characteristic rhythm and melody. Next come the Juniors with their delightful Mother Goose act. Finally the Seniors, greeted by howls of amusement from the crowd, present scenes in the cafe of the famous Rough House where Wimpey, Popeye, Olive Oyl, Toar, and even Sweet Pea foregather in real funn y paper style. Hurrah! At last the grand climax has arrived — the coronation of the Circus Queen. But who will be the Queen? Everyone is breathless. The ring master announces her approach. A roar of applause greets the appearance of Her Majesty ' s float. It is a lovely swan, sailing amid six beautiful water lilies. But the Queen herself is veiled. Who can she be? The waiting throng can hardly breathe! The suspense is terrific ! But the ring master comes to our rescue. Forward he steps. He throws back the veil and triumphantly crowns the Queen of the Circus — She is Addie Norfleet. The Sophomores receive the award for the best act. Then the performers disperse and the crowd moves down upon the floor. There it ' s bingo, cold drinks, side shows. The rhythm of the Hampden-Sydney orchestra starts the dancing at the far end of the gymnasium. Voices and music mingle with sounds of dancing feet. Time flies. At last the crowds begin to leave. Decorations and booths are quickly torn down. Lights go out, and another S. T. C. circus is no more. Three ideals are held by the Dramatic Club: to teach the staging of dramatic productions, to create an appreciation of the best in drama, and to serve the school and community. A play each fall and each spring and a Southside Vir- ginia Dramatic Tournament comprise the Club program. On November 22, 1935, the combined clubs of Hamp- den-Sydney College and S. T C. produced A Night in August, the story of a romantic young Spanish girl who fell in love with her favorite author. The leads were taken by Frances Britton and Jim Elder. Shakespeare ' s lightest comedy, Taming of the Shrew, was staged on April 3, 1936. All roles were taken by girls in school. The role of the shrew was played by Virginia Agee and that of the tamer, by Chubby Gray. A large cast consisted further of: Clara Nottingham, Margaret Pollard, Nan Throckmorton, Elizabeth Carroll, Alpha Lee Garnette, Marjorie Thompson, Carter Beele Munt, Virginia Hooke, Elizabeth Seiber, Mary Lou French, Nancy Gray, Meriel McAllister, Jane Lybrook, Elizabeth George Wilson, Nellwyn Latimer, and Madeline McGlothlin. Two formal dances each year, one in the fall and another in the spring, are sponsored by the club, as well as a dansante as an added feature in the spring. Membership is limited to two hundred members. Boys and girls from far and wide add to the gaiety of the occasions. Fall Cotillion on November 2, drew alumnae and guests from many parts of the State. Music for the dance was furnished by the increasingly popular University of Virginia orchestra. The Freshmen were easy to boss! Cries of Dance with my date! and Wanna meet my date! could be heard on all sides, as girls were dragged from one end of the gym to the other. And then came the mad rush to the steps at intermission! At midnight the dance ended, only to be followed by sleepy bull sessions when happy hearts and aching feet held dominion. Then on May 9, came that other Brand event — Soring Cotillion — with Harry Reser and his Cliquot Club Eskimos. Besides the formal dance, there was a dansante in the after- noon. That evening at the formal dance the Figure was led by the officers of the club: Martha Nottingham, Grace Eubank, Florence Sanford, Billie Wilkinson. And now it ' s all just a delightful memory! Margarette Aldredge Danville, Virginia Primary Education An able student entered the portals of Farmville when Margarette came to us. Unfortunately for us, she has been here only two years, having transferred from Averette College, Danville, Vir- ginia, at the beginning of her junior year. Enlisting as a member of the Y. W. C. A. and the A. A., she has worked faithfully in these organizations. On proving herself capable of teaching little children, she was given a bid to A. C. E. Margarette is of the more conserva- tive type of person, choosing to have a small circle of good friends rather than a scant acquaintance of many. Louise Bailey Jeffress, Virginia Elementary Education And, here, gentle reader, you see one of those genuinely sincere people who just can ' t help being that way. Not a born mixer, her friendships are limited to a strong circle of true friends. A. C. E., Y. W. C. A., A. A., Granddaughters ' Club, and College Choir all claim her as a member. On the athletic field, the Class of ' 36 has found Louise a loyal and valuable standby. More than once she has battled shoulder to shoulder with her classmates for the points that made for class athletic superiority. Loyal, lovable, willing — that ' s the girl we find Louise to be. Nancy Leigh Bland Plain View, Virginia Elementary Education Quiet, capable, unassuming, inde- pendent — that ' s Nancy Leigh. At all times she is courteous and considerate of those about her. Never the meddlesome or conspicuous type of person, she has continued diligently along in the even tenor of her way. As a Freshman, she became a mem- ber of the A. A. and Y. W. C. A. A good part of her time has been spent with the College Choir, where she has worked well for four years. A genial nature makes her easy to get along with; in fact she knows how to be a friend. Margaret Alsop Prospect, Virginia Latin A 2; K A II; n P For her excellent scholarship, Mar- garet was rewarded by membership in Alpha Phi Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi, Sigma Pi Rho, Sodalitas Latina. She is also a member of Y. W. C. A. and A. A. Coming to us at the end of her Sophomore year from Blackstone Col- lege, she quickly adjusted herself to the life here in school. Some are born to glory in the field of sports; some in the field of knowl- edge. To Margaret, came that intan- gible something that put her in the latter class. Extremely modest — even a little shy, her honors have done nothing to change her quiet, unassuming nature. Dorothy Billings Farmville, Virginia Home Economics Dorothy didn ' t have a long road to travel in coming to S. T. C, for she is a citizen of Farmville ; however, she has progressed continuously along the winding road of school life. During her Freshman year she became a mem- ber of the Y. W. C. A., Cotillion, and A. A. Her Junior and Senior years brought forth from her excellent work on the Y. W. committee for town girls. The fall of 1935 she was elected pres- ident of De Ho Ec, an office in which she has served effectively. Dorothy has the capacity for doing tedious tasks thoroughly and well — an unusual capacity that indicates a pros- perous future. Ruby Blanton Guinea Mills, Virginia Mathematics A 2 ; K A n ; IT T M ; Beorc Eh Thorn Some of us are made to be dashing and careless — others are made to be studious. There is a place in the world for both types; and so, we find Ruby taking a definite stand on the side of the intellectual. The fact that Ruby is a member of the A. A., Y. W. C. A., Alpha Phi Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Gamma Mu, and Mathematics Clubs bears testimony of her sincerity, efficiency and energy. She believes in the old adage that actions speak louder than words, for she reserves her words for times and places where they can be most useful. Irene Bailey Rustburg, Virginia Chemistry, Biology At the outset Irene chose as her major subjects chemistry and biology. Conscientiously and persistently she has followed the line of science, doing work that is exceptionally thorough. She is a member of the A. A. and Y. W. C. A., and an ever-ready supporter of her class. Possessing a ready smile and a sunny disposition, Irene is always willing to help and never too busy to explain a difficult problem. In our minds there remains this question — will she continue her life as a test-tuber, or will this occupa- tion be overshadowed by her ardent love of cats? Emma Fenn Bingham Norfolk, Virginia Education r ; Beorc Eh Thorn A brilliant mind and the inclination to achieve! Those merits have won for Emma high scholastic honors. Because of her rare literary ability, she was elected chairman of the May Day Theme Committee, editor of The Hand- book, and literary editor of TTie Ro- tunda. And, too, because of her ver- satility, she served the House Council as Vice-President; was an active mem- ber of the Dramatic Club, the Y. W. C. A. and the A. A. ; and, through conscientious work, gained membership in A. C. E. Emma is known for her great love of reading — a serious minded girl, given to meditation. As an artist, as a writer, she is possessed with the talents of a genius. Agnes Meredith Bondurant Rice, Virginia French B n 6; K A n; n K A; n T M; A f 2 ; Beorc Eh Thorn Intellect, athletic ability, and con- geniality all make up Aggie ' s well rounded personality. After becoming a member of the A. A. and the Y. W. C. A., Agnes also joined the Debate Club and Le Cercle Francais. For two years she has worked on The Rotunda staff; first as proof reader and then as associate editor. Because of her intel- lect Beta Pi Theta, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Kappa Delta, Pi Gamma Mu, and Alpha Phi Sigma all claimed her as a member. Skill in basketball won a place for her on the Varsity Squad. Four years — and Agnes has never failed to do an assigned task or to help whenever called on. Marjorie Booton Luray, Virginia Primary Education, Art H T Hi A 2; T ; A 21 Irrepressible, carefree, and talkative — always good natured and ready to lend a helping hand — that ' s Booton. Because of her artistic temperament, she has worked diligently on the Pub- licity Committee of the Y. W. C. A. and has served in the capacity of assistant art editor on The VIRGINIAN Staff. Le Cercle Francais, the Dra- matic Club, A. C. E., Pi Gamma Mu, Alpha Phi Sigma and Gamma Psi also claim her membership. About her there is an attractive abandon. With her natural flair for cleverness and repartee and with her very cheerful personality she has made many friends. S. T. C. in general will miss her spontaneous humor and unpre- dictable actions. Louise Briggs Sebrell, Virginia Pre-Library Course Always industrious is Louise! No she doesn ' t let work interfere with pleasure; she just makes worth-while use of her leisure time. She has worked well on the Membership Committee of the Y. W. C. A., and she also belongs to the A. A. Her interest in foreign lan- guages has won her membership in Le Cercle Francais and the Sodalitas Latina. Modest, shy, and ever a good sport, Louise goes her own independent way, not realizing that her slow, but ever- ready smile makes the day a little brighter for all those who know her well. Katherjne Chappell Drakes Branch, Virginia Music Musical -minded Kitty is not well known to all of us, though she is a true friend to those who are really close to her. Gifted with a rare talent for singing, she has done outstanding work in the College Choir and Choral Club. Along other lines, her ability has been recognized by membership in the Dra- matic Club and the Association of Childhood Education. Throughout her four years she has been a member of the Athletic Association and Y. W. C. A. Kitty ' s attraction for Shannon ' s seems to have hit the Mark! Helen Jeffress Boswell Bracey, Virginia Elementary Education a i; ; ii r it ; k a n A certain dignity and reserve ac- company Helen as she comes and goes on the campus. Despite this reserve, there is a great amount of capability. When a Freshman, Helen, already a member of the Ahtletic Association and the Y. W. C. A., was elected represen- tative to the Student Council and a member of the Chapel Committee. In the College Choir, the Choral Club, and the Association of Childhood Educa- tion, she has shown marked ability. Her scholarship was recognized by Alpha Phi Sigma and Pi Gamma Mu. As a Senior, she is class treasurer and Senior chaperon. Helen puts her entire self into what- ever she undertakes. Caroline Houston Byrd Warm Springs, Virginia Primary Education A 2 A Bug is among those rare girls who dislike gossip, but is invaluable at truth meetings because of her frankness. She is serious as a judge one day; the next, just plain crazy. Any phase of college life interests her; she was on the House Council her sophomore year, also Intercollegiate News Editor of 77ie Rotunda. Her school spirit crept in as Cheer Leader of the junior class. She was on Pan- hellenic Council three years. She be- longs to the Y. W. C. A., A. A., Co- tillion, A. C. C, Nell has made a place for herself, one characterized by willingness and perseverance. She has done what many of us would like to have done, chosen a few activities and stuck faithfully to them. At the head of this list we name the Choral Club and more especially the College Choir in which she has served on the Executive Committee. Nell is also a member of the A. A., Y. W. C. A. and A. C. E. Maybe Nell ' s peaceful and pleasant frame of mind can be attributed to the fact, that she has a planned future. We hear a Virginian is the lucky one. Marguerite Byrd Whaleysville, Virginia History In the winter quarter of our junior year, we were joined by Marguerite, a transfer from Fredericksburg, State Teachers College. With her entrance she became a member of the Athletic Association and the Y. W. C. A. Marguerite is the kind of person one enjoys knowing, for she is always the same — always bubbling over with kind- ness and good fellowship. Her unfal- tering good nature is a comfort to the depressed. Even her most casual friends cannot fail to recognize this fundamen- tal goodness. True friendliness then can be said to be one of her admirable attributes. Audrey Clements Hampton, Virginia English A 2; Beorc Eh Thorn; K A II When we need something done, whether large or small, we select Aud- rey — this means not only the task will be accomplished, but skillfully so. She has done outstanding work in Dramatics, not on the staff perhaps, but behind the scenes where one ' s work often goes unrecognized. She tried ath- letics as a freshman and made Varsity Hockey Squad, and Class Volley Ball Team. In the Y. W. C. A. she has worked on the World Fellowship Com- mittee. She also belongs to El Circulo Espanol. There ' s a lot in store for Audrey, for success begins with determination, and if she should waver on the way, she ' d jot be too discouraged nor yet too proud to try again. - 134 Doris Coates Norfolk, Virginia History II T M; K A II; Beorc Eh Thorn; A 2; A 2 T Laugh and the world laughs with you is not only a belief but a practice with Doris. Ione Covert Richmond, Virginia English Slight of stature, dark of hair, with a definite fire in her snappy blue eyes — that ' s Ione. Don ' t say that she is the most sociable person ever — She ' s not! She does as she pleases and cares not what people may think. A member of the Y. W. C. A. and A. A., yet her greatest interest lies in El Circulo hspanol. She is one of those rare individuals who is unable to learn enough about a subject — this time it s Spanish. Incidentally, we hear she has another interest afloat. She is waiting for her ship to come in, perhaps. Dorothy Allen Deans Portsmouth, Virginia Latin and Spanish 2 II P; A 2 T Dot has only been here for the past two years, having transferred from William and Mary in Norfolk. C. A., Tony has also done outstanding work in the College Choir and Or- chestra. In addition to this, she is a member of the Dramatic Club and A. C. E. Alice Collings Roanoke, Virginia Chemistryi Here is an active and adventuresome mind — one that is forever probing some subject, usually chemistry. Pi Gamma Mu has awarded her scholar- ship. A member of Y. W. C. A. and A. A., she also has worked in El Cir- culo Espanol and the College Choir. Louise is a clear thinker and a born debater — a most capable and efficient individual! And, strangely enough, she ' s not weeping before supper; instead she is possessed of a wonderful disposition that functions twenty-four hours a day. Winnie came to us as a Sophomore, transferring from Mary Baldwin Col- lege. She became a member of A. A., Y. W. C. A., Home Economics Club, Choral Club, College Choir, and Co- tillion Club. Margaret Reed Farrar Farmville, Virginia History a k r-, n r M; ::: Versatility and Farrar — the terms are synonymous. Affiliating herself early with the A. A., Y. W. C. A., Dramatic Club, Cotillion Club, she con- tinued upward. She is the proverbial op- timist! -138- r Claudia Harper Newport News, Virginia Elementary Education nrM;A$S;KAII;IIK2 Hail to Claudia, the jolly good fel- low! To have as much fun and frivolity about one as Claudia has and still to possess that rare thing called sense is surprising in the highest degree. From the first, she claimed member- ship in the A. A., the Y. W. C. A., and later she was bid into the Cotillion Club, the Dramatic Club and the Choral Club. As an active member of the A. C. E. and as a reporter on The Rotunda Staff, she has done excellent work. That laugh and the world laughs with you spirit will be missed here next year when we no longer see her bright smile on the halls. Martha Harrison Waverly, Virginia Elementary Education A contradiction to the age-old tradi- tion concerning red-heads — Martha is even tempered and tranquil. As a member of the A. A., she has excelled in Athletics, playing on the Class Basketball, Volley Ball, Hockey, and Baseball Teams. She is also a member of the Y. W. C. A., the Dramatic Club and the Association of Childhood Education. Rather quiet but studious, Martha is usually the shining light of the class. Likable and good-natured, she has the friendly respect of all who know her. We admire her as an unassuming sort of person who makes no show of doing things, but calmly and industriously carries on. Kathryn Saunders Harvey Curdsville, Virginia Mathematics Despite the fact that Kat now has an outside attraction, she has found time to take an interest in campus activities. As a member of the Y. W. C. A., she served on the Town Girls ' Com- mittee. She has been on the House Council for two years, serving as Hall President. She also belongs to the A. A., the Dramatic Club, Mathematics Club, the Granddaughters ' Club, and Cotil- lion Club. Kat ' s sunny disposition has already helped the hand of fate reveal her destiny. The wedding bells have chimed and the thought of school teaching has vanished. Grace Louise Harris Richmond, Virginia Primary Education Here is one of those genuinely sin- cere people who just can ' t help being a good friend. With a hail-fellow-well- met air about her, Grace will always have a bright smile for everybody. We regret that she has been with us only one year. Her other Alma Mater was Richmond Normal School. Upon en- tering S. T. C, she was connected with the Y. W. C. A., and the A. A. In a short time she became a member of the Dramatic Club and the A. C. E. During Grace ' s short stay with us, we have known a friendly nature that will be missed by us all when she leaves us in June. Bessie Hart Union Level, Virginia Elementary Education During the past four years Bessie has proved herself possessive of that ability that gets things done. Regardless of the situation one can depend on her. She ' s that kind of person — sincere and dependable. The A. A., Y. W. C. A., Choral Club, and A. C. E. all claim her mem- bership. A., she has also worked in both the Debate and Dramatic Club. Her record as a student speaks for itself through her membership in Alpha Phi Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Gamma Mu, and Beorc Eh Thorn. Virginia has never allowed anything to interfere with her work. She is an ambitious, hard and dependable work- er, and an excellent student. Dartha Harrison Waverly, Virginia Mathematics and Biology An easy-going girl, never excited or rattled! Dartha is not well-known to all of us, but she is well-liked by all who know her. She is a member of the Athletic Association and the Y. W. C. A., though she never took a very active part in either of these. Her fine spirit she has shown by her interest in all school activities. As a member of the Dramatic Club, she has worked faithfully. Her ever increasing knowl- edge and interest in the field of her major subject led to membership in the Mathematics Club. Dartha ' s kind nature and quiet man- ner will be missed by us next year. The willingness to lend a helping hand to others has made for her many staunch and true friends. Elizabeth Hart Sutherland, Virginia History Quietly but surely Liz makes her way to and fro. Known only to a few of us she limits her associations, friend- ships and confidences to a small group. She was early connected with the Athletic Association and the Y. W. C. A. Later, because of good work in Spanish, she was bid to and became a member of El Circulo Espanol. The Dramatic Club also claims her as a member. In the Cotillion Club she is ever present and ever active. At the end of the winter quarter Liz left us, having finished requirements for her degree. Behind her she leaves a memory that cannot fail to last. Carolyn Hoon San Antonio, Texas Biology A goodly portion of spontaneity, an outspoken mind, a gracious manner, and many-sided interests — these are the characteristics that make Carolyn dear to us. From Texas, by way of Queens- Chicora, she came to us as a Soph- omore. She soon became a member of the Cotillion Club, the A. A., and the Y. W. C. A. She has become a mem- ber of Alpha Phi Sigma and Kappa Delta Pi. In remembering Carolyn one can- not fail to picture her stumbling along at a furious rate with her arms full. She makes a sensational landing — and class is half over! JBk IZELL HOUCK. Blackstone, Virginia French A $ 2; BUG; K A H Izell is another industrious worker who believes that a little work never hurts anyone. She came to Farmville at the beginning of her Junior year from Blackstone College. During her first year here, she joined Le Cercle Francais and became a mem- ber of the A. A. and Y. W. C. A. Her application to duty and her determina- tion to finish successfully everything she begins are the elements certain to bring success. Elizabeth Huse Roanoke, Virginia English and History A K r ; II K 2 Frolicsome, fun-loving and full of laughter, Huse is a girl with whom we all like to play. She has been outstanding as Hall President, Vice-President and as President of the House Council. As a Junior, she was Treasurer of Student Council. In the Y. W. C. A., she has been an active member, serving Fresh- man Commission, Social Committee, and Sing Committee. As a Senior Chap- erone, a member of A. A., Cotillion Club, Pan-Hellenic Council, and Stu- dent Standards Committee, Huse has further proved herself versatile and capable. Maude Anne Jones La Crosse, Virginia English Although Maude had been with the class for four years, she had to spend a part of her Senior year away from us because of sickness. Before leaving to recuperate, she was a member of the Y. W. C. A. and of the A. A. Maude is an unusually quiet girl. She does not make a fuss about what she does; instead she goes on unassum- ingly and does it. Even though she is not one who demands pomp, Maude is that practical and efficient sort of person whose career should be devoted to school teaching. Marie Hundley Sedley, Virginia Primary Education Never advertising her presence or her opinions — never seeking the lime- light, Marie is as loyal as she is de- pendable. When a Freshman, Marie became a member of the A. A. the Y. W. C. A. and later because of her ability as a teacher in the Department of Primary Education, she was asked to become a member of the Association of Childhood Education. She is one of those rare individuals who take their work seriously, never letting her class work suffer. To her friends and fellow class- mates, she is known as one who is al- ways obliging — always in a good humor. Lois Crenshaw Jones Lynchburg, Virginia Elementary Education There are some who always find something worthwhile to do — some noble task to accomplish. Buddy falls into that kind of group. And when it comes to serving, she is a wizard at the game. We envy her this skill! Ability and determination have char- acterized Buddy in every activity. But her work as a member of Orchesis is not only to be lauded but to be re- membered and used as a shining ex- ample. She is also a member of the A. A., the Y. W. C. A., the A. C. E., and the Dramatic Club. There ' s no need to wish her success! Success is hers already. Virginia Mae Lee Altavista, Virginia Elementary Education Virginia never knew a stranger, for she considered everyone in the student body her friend. And for these friends she always had a bit of a joke or a friendly greeting. Upon entering school, she became a member of the Athletic Association and the Y. W. C. A., and was later claimed by the A. C. E. because of her ability to teach children. Margaret Hurtt Nassawaddox, Virginia Mathematics and History A 2 A The girl who, when leaving her room, knocks on her own door before going out, is Hurtt. Absent-minded? Yes, but such a sport! We all enjoy the fun we get at her expense. And she does, too! When a Freshman she became a member of the A. A., also of the Var- sity Basketball Squad. She now be- longs to the Y. W. C. A., the Drama- tic Club, Math. Club, and the Cotillion Club. She is generally known as easy-going, quiet and indifferent. Perhaps she is thus known because she never interferes in the affairs of others. The grit and determination with which she sets out to accomplish a task proves that Hurtt will climb high, and she will not falter on the way. Jeannette B. Jones Smithfield, Virginia Latin and French A 2; 2 n P Jeannette is one of those quiet girls who have little to say, but she is an asset to any student body. Never pro- crastinating, Jeannette gets her work done on time. With such a trait, of course, she succeeds. Although extra - curricula activities do not interest her greatly, she belongs to the A. A., the Y. W. C. A., and she is a member of Sodalitas Latina. Since she has been in school, Jean- nette has not flurried around noisily, but her name has been seen frequently on the Honor Roll. Anne Margaret McCready Parksley, Virginia Latin Anne came to us as a transfer from William and Mary. And now, to say the least, we ' re glad she changed her mind! Upon entering school, she became a member of the A. A., the Y. W. C. A., and the Granddaughters ' Club. She later joined the Dramatic Club. Because of her work in Latin and French, she is a member of Le Cercle Francais and Sodalitas Latina. Anne seldon gives her opinion about a matter. In fact, she rarely has much to say. But we know she has her thoughts and we ' re aware of the fact that Silence is golden. M Dorothy McNamee Farmville, Virginia Elementarv Education The term artist is descriptive of Dor- othy in more ways than one. Because of her artistic ability, she is a member of Gamma Psi and Orchesis. As one of the latter group, she has been prom- inent in the production of various dance recitals and May Day programs. But her activities do not end here. She is a member of the A. A. In her sophomore year, she played on the Varsity Hockey Squad, and as a mem- ber of the Y. W. C. A., she served on the Town Girls ' Committee. The Dra- matic Club and Choral Club also claim her. Always neatly attired, always pleas- ant, always willing — that ' s Dot. Evelyn Cosby Massey Post Oak, Virginia Chemistry K A n; A 2; II T M Nonchalant, casual, easy-going! But oddly enough she has a determin- ation (once her mind is made up) that helps her do a job and do it well! As a Freshman, she became a mem- ber of the A. A., the Y. W. C. A., the Mathematics Club, the Freshman Commission, and reporter on The Ro- tunda staff. She has since served the staff as news editor, associate editor, and business manager. A sports enthusiast, she has been manager of volleyball. In addition she has played on the Class Baseball, Vol- ley Ball, and Varsity Hockey teams, working herself up to membership in the Monogram Club of which she was the treasurer in ' 34 and the president in ' 35. Cotillion, also, claims her. Billie Morgan Andersonville, Virginia Elementary Education Billie is one of our town girls who are not often seen around the campus. She is, however, always willing to be of assistance to anyone who needs her help. She is a member of the A. A. Dur- ing her first year with us, she worked on the Freshman Commission of the Y. W. C. A. Billie ' s scholastic record was such a worthy one that she was chosen student assistant in the kindergarten. And in her heart she has a pla for a host of real friends! Jane Main Petersburg, Virginia Elementarv Education Four years have made little change in Jane. She is still that dark, dreamy beauty, who, calmly sophisticated, glides into one ' s presence — unperturbed — cool, calm, nonchalant. Jane has taken part in many of the school activities. She is a member of the Y. W. C. A., the A. A., and the Cotillion Club. On the House Council she served as hall president. A talented violinist, she has played for four years in the College Orchestra. Her even temperament and quiet force indicate for her a promising future. Elsie Mayo Schuyler, Virginia History Always a good sport — always ready for fun, Elsie may be called a play- girl. If you ' re feeling blue, she will cheer you up; if you ' re out for a good time, she is the one who will add to the gayety. Of the two organizations, the Y. W. C. A., and the Athletic Association, she seems to have been partial to the latter, for she went out for baseball in ' 35. Though Elsie has lived in town this year, she remains one of the girls — and it is to one of the girls that we regretfully say Adios. Addie Norfleet Suffolk, Virginia Elementary Education Can we forget one who is ever clowning and ever finding humor every- where? No! That ' s why we ' ll never forget Addie. She has not only helped us out of the dumps for the time being, but she has given us something to laugh about afterwards. As a member of the Choral Club and the College Choir, Addie has done well. And she has not failed to work in the A. A., the . W. C. A., and the Debate Club. Yes, Cotillion, too, has claimed her as a member. That such a fun-loving person as Addie should like to study is unusual. But studying is her chief diversion, and her name has become a fixture on the Dean ' s List. Ellen Mason Lynchburg, Virginia Mathematics, History 11 9. The carefree life — the joy of living — these the Titian-haired Ellen pos- sesses. As a member of the Y. W. C. A. Cabinet, she has worked both as a member and then as chairman of the Alumnae Membership Committee. She served on the House Council as hall president and worked faithfully for four years on the Student Standards Committee. Membership in Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Phi Sigma, Sigma Pi Rho, and Alpha Kappa Gamma prove her success. Doris has such a rare combination of independence, individuality, scholarship, and leadership, that the whole college looks up to her. Martha Nottingham Eastville, Virginia Elementary Education re Those deep red blushes — those hap- py smiles that would so bewitchingly light up her face when she ' d come in rather late on certain nights — can we forget them? A. as secretary of the Freshman Commis- sion; the Student Council as Campus League chairman ; the Student Standards Committee as ex-officio member; the Cotillion Club as leader for one year; the Granddaughters ' Club as treasurer, and Pan-Hellenic as a member of the Council. A., the Y. W. C. A. and the Cotillion Club. She is quite college-minded, perhaps more so towards V. M. I. and other neighboring institutions than our own. Just as she makes some gentlemen for- get they are woman-haters, she, likewise makes us incapable of forgetting her winning personality and her true South- ern Charm. Some day she may yet make history. V. Louise Potter Petersburg, Virginia Elementary Education A K T; T ■■; A 2 A Queen of Mardi Gras, Queen of May — a maiden fair to see! A. and as a member of the A. A., the Dramatic Club, the Chapel Committee, and the College Choir, she served unusually well. Ann Elizabeth Pohlig Richmond, Virginia History Fate deprived us of the pleasure of knowing Ann until our senior year. Her other three years of college life were spent at William and Mary. However, in the short time she has been here, we have grown to know and ad- mire her. Ann is a member of the Y. W. C. A. and the A. A. She is petite of stature. Mary Lee Powell Boykins, Virginia Elementary Education To the untrained observer, Mary Lee is quiet, dignified, and reserved — perhaps a little indifferent. Her talent in music has brought to her mem- bership in the Choral Club. Mary Lee is also found among the chosen few that belong to the Cotillion Club. Because of her excellent work in the Debate Club, she became a member of Pi Ka - pa Delta, and she is now the proud wearer of the diamond key. She be- longs, also, to Sodalitas Latina. Grades just seem to come her way regardless! Living in town as she does, her ac- tivities have been limited to the A. A., the Y. W. C. A., and the Cotillion Club. Incidentally, horseback riding fills a large part of her spare time. Then, too, she never ignores football games, races, boxing, and the like. Fortunately for her, she is the daughter of an alumna, for that makes her a member of the Grand- daughters ' Club. Mildred has not made a large circle of friends since she came here. Those she has made, however, know her as a stable and dependable sort of person who can never be forgotten. Florence M. Her activities have been limited to membership in the Athletic Association and the Y. W. C. A. However, she has devoted her time profitably to her studies. Only a few of us know Clyde well, but those of us who do, know a warm friend. When she was graduated at the end of the fall quarter, she left us, having acquired that for which she came — an education. With a bit of indifference toward life, Marion went through college, de- voting most of her time and interest to only those things that really appealed to her. An ardent enthusiast of music, she became an outstanding member of the Choral Club and the College Choir. She is also a member of Orchesis. In the Y. W. C. A. she was active as a member of the Freshman Commission of the Fellowship Committee for two years, and of the Music Committee dur- ing her Senior year. The Dramatic Club, Le Cercle Francais, the A. Marcia Vick Courtland, Virginia Elementary Education On entering her room one finds Mar- cia busy with a dozen little tasks that must be done. SENIOR CLASS H ISTORY To give an accurate account of each important event in our college career would be impossible in so short a space. Let us then hit the high spots that are stamped in our minds and live again a few of our intimate college scenes. To pursue an academic life, we needed leaders to help us over the bumps we must encounter. Tac Waters, our excellent president for four years, has proved herself most efficient, and she has been assisted by a thoroughly capable staff. No group is complete without a Classman. To this office Miss Virginia Bedford was chosen. We were then ready to begin our college routine. How- ever, before being fully initiated, there were a number of things to be done . . . orientation classes . . . learning how to hang six deep over the Rotunda to eavesdrop on dates . . . And Rat Week! Remember carrying alarm clocks, wearing pigtails and frizzled hair, and bowing to the high and mighty Sophomores? . . . Then being given those crazy blue and white skull caps to wear? . . . To discard them, we had to win the hockey game from the Sophomores on Thanksgiving Day . . . but we lost . . . wore caps until Christmas. . . . The color rush at six in the morning was exciting, though we succumbed to the Green and Whites. . . . Plenty of Freshmen out for ath- letics . . . nice team-work . . . excellent spirit. . . . Remember 14 and N. B. B. O. ? . . . We ' re the cutest girls in school and it ' s Nobody ' s business but ours ? . . . The Dramatic Club was an inspiration to our Kat Cornells . . . and the Choir and Choral Club found a startling number of Galli-Curcis. . . . The Circus and Class production called for a display of talents ... Pi Gamma Mu instigated a super-attraction this year — Mardi Gras ... a costume ball, replica of the New Orleans pre-Lenten festival. . . . Founders ' day brought back a large number of alumnae and visitors . . . likewise Spring Cotillion . . . May Day . . . and so on till exams . . . and finals. As Sophomores we were pretty snooty to the Rats . . . an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth method of revenge for the indignities we had suffered. . . . Our first activity was putting Sing across with a bang . . . and when Circus time rolled ' round, our cowboys and girls lassoed first honors. . . . Orchids to Florence Sanford as the bare-back rider. . . . The bucking broncho threw her for a loss. . . . The class production was tops. . . . Margaret Farrar ' s tantalizing tango and Marion Jean Wright ' s blue notes sent shivers up Ye Olde Spine. . . . Color Rush brought headaches, black eyes, and sprained ankles, and our Red and White banners floating from prominent points . . . won a game, lost a game on Thanksgiving Day. . . . Fall Cotillion velley, velley good . . . Sudie began to J. T. on campus . . . Mardi Gras glamorous again . . . and what a Founders ' day . . . our fiftieth anniversary . . . speakers, recitals, banquet, and another added feature — dance — newspaper headlines! . . . Spring Cotillion and much ado. . . . Preparations begin for graduating Sophomores. . . . Kittv Hoyle selected by faculty as salutatorian. . . . Dot Eley, giftorian of the sophomore class. . . . And so endeth another year. Our advent as Juniors was sad ... no Miss Jennie to welcome us back. . . . We had lost a valued friend ... an inspiration to better work! . . . Have you seen the new swimming pool behind the gym? . . . Truly colossal . . . and the man on the flying trapeze at the Circus? . . . Louise Gathright ' s superb solo accompanied Lelia Sanford ' s tossing Hennie Salsbury to and fro ... a mean feature. . . . The usual Thanksgiving festivities gave way to a five-day holiday . . . extra excitement and another set of Goodbyes and Hello agams. . . . Everyone has the knitting craze ... or else she ' s roller-skating. . . . Production again a super fete . . . Grace Eubank ' s trills thrill ... the mock wedding was a gala climax . . . and let ' s not forget the amplifier . . . Lucy Potter was elected Mardi Gras queen . . . truly a blonde goddess . . . mob scene at th? dance . . . Car poker became sensational sport. . . . May Day found us singing on to the May Pole of Merry Mount . . . Spring elections gave Juniors the heads of major organizations . . . Spring Cotillion and Johnny Long brought relief from over-work . . . everyone humming tunes from Naughty Marietta. . . . Boring term papers and exams interfered with play . . . and play we had to, for next year we ' d be Seniors . . . Finals were a bit sadder that year . . . perhaps it was because we were nearing the end. And now we ' re back for the last year of study and fun . . . dignified? . . . well, maybe! . . . It ' s swell being back and joining the mob scene in Shannon ' s when the urge of the Camels becomes too strong . . . even at ten P. M. . . . Senior privilege . . . Senior Installation . . . marching to the Alma Mater in caps and gowns . ... Alpha Kappa Gamma adopted the tap system of bidding members . . . a very impressive service. . . . Guess who the Senior members of Chi are? . . . And instead of having a Senior production, we held a Senior dance — another privilege ... a superlative affair . . . everyone joining the C. C. C.
