M. Cox was appointed Clerk and Business Manager of the Normal School at Farmville, Virginia. He has been called one of nature ' s accountants. His methods were his own, but they were so simple and satisfactory as to merit the highest praise from expert auditors. For a man to have such a personality that ten years after his death, two of his friends, though strangers to one another, could meet and spend a delightful two hours living over happy memories of their friend, gives proof of the rare human quality of the man ' s nature. This experience of mine can be duplicated l v the host of friends who knew Mr. Cox as a most lovable man. Time confirms the fact that schools are built around person- alities, and that the spirit of an institution is the composite of the souls of those who have breathed into that institution its verv breath of life. These immortal spirits live on, and shall live on, perpetuating the ideals and traditions of the place. As guide, counsellor, and friend, Mr. Cox was honored and loved by all those connected with our alma mater, whatever their stat on or degree. He was ever the generous-hearted, genial host ; and his merry laughter and kindly welcome created the home-like air that makes our alma mater unique among schools. Mr. Cox was a tradition, the tradition that f etters not, but inspires. Our lives are richer for having touched his, and we must pass on to others what he taught us of the good life. vJ vcAJU-je- v Jc 1 4 V O L U M E XXX I I I To Mrs. Portia Lee Morrison A strong woman in consecration to duty ; in loyalty to serv- ice ; in high ideals of the obligations for duties assumed, and in the faith that sustaineth to the end was Mrs. Portia Lee Morrison. From June, 1888, to June, 1905, Mrs. Morrison was the head of the home department of the Normal School, Farm- ville, Virginia. During this time, she was a pillar of strength and encouragement, of aggressive hope and confidence that all would be well. She never failed to look upward and onward, and her chief aim was to create for the students the atmosphere of a true home. Her strong personality, combining rare mental, social, and spiritual qualities, touched a responsive and quick- ening chord in the hearts of the students, the faculty, the mem- bers of the home department, and the citizens of the community. Possessed of a broad and liberal education, gifted with a naturally clear intellect, which was refined and cultivated by constant reading, study, and communion with the classics, both ancient and modern, with the literature of missions, and with the spiritual teachings of the Bible, Mrs. Morrison was an or- nament to any scholarly circle. Pure of life, inflexible in integrity of purpose, warm and generous of heart, charitable in impulse and deed, she meas- ured up to the stature of a noble woman, a true leader, one who has left an indelible impression for good upon the hearts of those who were blessed with intimate association with her. % t - £■= 1 9 3 4 T H E V I E a INIA N Childhood and Youth A Vision Behold the vision of Childhood and Youth reaching out eager, restless hands to an unknown world. Behind the hands are youthful faces, alert ears, eager, questioning eyes, some filled with the joy of happy childhood, some filled with wonder, some, perhaps, with the fear of the unknown — Childhood and Youth facing a world in which they are to live, and of which they are to become a part ! The speechless hands, the open ears, the questioning eyes — all embody the mute appeal of childhood and youth for train- ing, direction, and guidance — training for the little hands that they may become strong, skillful hands. The open ears, the questioning eyes, need direction and guidance that they may begin to understand and interpret the world which from year to year is to become a more real world to them. Thus the heritage of sublime thought in great literature may be opened up to them that their youthful faces may come to reflect the spirit of the One in whose image they were created. This vision of the inarticulate appeal of the childhood and youth of Virginia bore so heavily upon the minds and hearts of the educational leaders of fifty years ago, that to meet this need, in 1884 the State Normal School, Farmville, lrginia, came into existence. In the educational ideals for the development of the three- fold nature of the child, in this first institution in Virginia for the training of teachers, was reflected the spirit of scholarship, of progress, of unselfish service. I low well this first Normal School of Virginia, now the State Teachers College, barmville, Virginia, has fulfilled the mission intrusted to it, is attested by the faithful, efficient service of the alumnae who have gone out from its walls. What has been accomplished belongs to the past, touches the present, reaches out into the future. And in this future — The Eternal Vision of Childhood and Youth! I gfSlfpi u V O L U Ml E XXX I I I Our Alma Mater | ' HF first teacher-training institution in Virginia was established by the IL Legislature in [884 and located in Farmville, a small town in Southside Virginia, six miles from the old College of Hampden-Sydney. That Farm- ville secured the school was due to the fact that the town offered to donate to the State the building and grounds of what was then known as Farmville College, a small plant occupying less than half a square of ground. It was not, however, until 1886 that the institution was incorporated by the Legislature under the name of the State Female Normal School. As the bill was signed on March 7. this date is observed in the College as Founders ' Day. The signing of this hill was an important step in the edu- cational life of Virginia, for it was the beginning of a real schedule of growth for the public schools. In fact, it was the first indication that the State was realizing the great importance of giving to her children proper opportunities for an education. Among the men who were closely associated with this beginning of teacher-training, we may mention two, especially, who threw themselves heart and soul into the work: Dr. J. L. M. Curry and Dr. W. H. Ruffner. To them is conceded the credit for the normal school idea in Virginia. Ami truly they were the guiding spirits of the new undertaking! Dr. Curry drafted the bill for the establishment of the school, and from that day until his death in 1903, his interest was unflagging. He was the first President of the Board of Trustees and was one of a committee to re- port a plan for organization. As a statesman and leader in educational matters, Dr. Curry stood preeminent in the South. Among man)- prominent positions held by him was that of agent for the Peabody Fund for a period of twenty-two years; lie was also agent for the Slater Fund ( for negro education ) for twelve years. Through the administering of these funds, he had more to do with the organization of the public schools of Virginia and the South than any other man. In a sketch of Dr. Curry the writer says: He was a wonder- fully versatile man — soldier, preacher, member of Congress, State Legislator, administrator of two funds, professor, college president, author, representative at a foreign court — and with it all, a knightly gentleman and a lovable man. 1,-) 1 an 3 4 T H E V I E IE I N I A N The first President of the State Female Normal School at Farmville, one of the first teacher-training institutions to be established in the South, was Dr. William Henry Ruffner, a man peculiarly well fitted for the work of organizing the school. He was the first Superintendent of Public Instruc- ts m in Virginia, taking charge of the public school system when it was founded in 1S70, and remaining in this position until lie came to Farmville in 1884 From his experience as Superintendent Dr. Ruffner brought to the new institution a thorough understanding of the needs of the public schools. In fact, he had founded them, studied them, and worked for them as had no other person in the State. He not only knew the needs of the teacher, but he knew also how to meet them. He came to his work an educational ex- pert, fully equipped. His father, a distinguished Presbyterian minister, was for many years President of what is now Washington and Lee University, from which in- stitution Dr. Ruffner was graduated with the master ' s degree in 1845. Pike his father, he also entered the ministry and was at one time Chaplain of the University of Virginia. The broad culture and wide experience of the President were reflected in the school, as attested by the smoothness and efficiency of the organization from the beginning. It has been said of Dr. Ruffner that he did for Virginia what Horace Mann, thirty-three years before, had done for Massachusetts. Farmville ' S second President came into office in 1887, Dr. John Atkin- son Cunningham, a man worth) ' in every way to become the successor of Dr. Ruffner and to carry on most efficiently the work begun three years previously. Dr. Cunningham ' s mother was Mary Johnston, a granddaughter of Peter Johnston of Longwood. Longwood is now a recreational center for the students of S. T. C. ; it is located on the outskirts of the town, about a fifteen-minute walk from the campus. Dr. Cunningham, a student at the University of Virginia and a grad- uate of the University of Nashville, was a man of sound scholarship and varied experience in teaching. He had served as professor in a college and in a military school, and as principal of Madison School in Richmond, Vir- ginia. From this latter position he came to Farmville — fresh from the prob- lems and needs of the public school. Dr. Cunningham served Farmville and the State for ten years, and died in service. The school was his life: to it Hi 4 V O L U M E X X I I I he gave his time, his thought and his marvelous power as a teacher. He was also an excellent administrator, and progress under his guidance was steady. Dr. Cunningham was a man of deep sympathy — especially for those who were struggling to help themselves. For this reason there could he no more fitting monument to him than the Cunningham Memorial Loan Fund — a fund raised by the alumnae who were graduated during his administra- tion — to help worthy girls who are not able to finance their college life. During the period of its existence, this fund has made it possible for 10S girls to be educated at S. T. C. Under Dr. Cunningham ' s administration the enrollment grew to two hundred seventy-seven (including students in both the academic and pro- fessional courses) — with twelve members on the faculty. Upon the death of Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Robert Frazer was called to the Presidency of the Normal School. At the time he was President of the Industrial Institute and College at Columbus, Mississippi. It was said of Dr. Frazer that he brought to his new work a richly stored mind, a broad knowledge of life, and a varied and valuable experience in schools of many types. His four years ' work was characterized by the same earnestness and zeal, the same conscientious devotion to his convictions of duty that he has displayed elsewhere, and the result, as before, was growth and expansion of a steady, stable kind. In 1899, during the Presidency of Dr. Frazer, the Virginia Normal League was established. This organization still maintains, by annual mem- bership dues and by gifts, a fund which exists for the purpose of making loans to students who need assistance in obtaining an education. Dr. Frazer resigned his position in 1902 to accept that of Field Agent of the General Education Board. Along with the portraits of Dr. Curry, Dr. Ruffner and Dr. Cunningham in the President ' s Office of the College, there is another that should be of interest to all who care anything for the early history of the institution. At the time of the establishment of the Normal School, Dr. James Nelson was Pastor of the Baptist Church in Farmville and was very en- thusiastic in his interest in the new undertaking. It was largely clue to him that the school was located here, and he was almost a charter member of the Board of Trustees, since a few months after it was established he was ap- 17 1 9 3 4 T H E V I E Q I N I A N pointed to fill the place of a member who resigned. He served on this Board with unusual faithfulness until it was abolished in 1914 when the institution went under the Virginia Normal School Board which had charge of the four teacher-training institutions of the State. Dr. Nelson ' s portrait was presented to the College in 1927 by Mr. William Nelson (a son of Dr. Nelson) and his wife. The painting is the work of Duncan Smith of New York City, who married a daughter of the donors. In the College Reading Room may be seen the portraits of three other members of this Board of Trustees, General William B. Taliaferro, Judge Francis Nathaniel Watkins, and Col. J. P. Fitzgerald ; the two last, citizens of Farmville. The fourth President of State Teachers College, Dr. Joseph Leonard Jarman, has served much longer than all of the others combined. When he entered upon his duties in 1902, he found a small school with a faculty of thirteen members, offering three years of academic (or high school) work and one year of professional work. Under his wise leadership, the institution has grown, expanded, and developed until today it is recognized as one of the outstanding Teachers Colleges of the United States. During the administrations of the former Presidents, the very small building that had been donated for the beginnings of the normal school was added to several times. The present Middle West Wing was erected, also a small dining hall in the rear; the Science Hall was built, and the Training School, once housed in a small frame structure was then moved into a brick building (a private residence ) recently purchased by the school. During Dr. Jarman ' s administration, many buildings have been erected : the East and West Wings, the Middle Fast Wing, the Training School, the Infirmary, the Dining Hall, the two dormitories, Cunningham Hall and the Annex, the Laundry, and the Power Plant. But the two greatest achievements of all are Longwood, the recrea- tional center for the girls, and the Student Building, which occupies the east end of the campus. In this building are housed the student activities : here we find handsome rooms, beautifully equipped for the Student Government Association, the Y. W. C. A., Student Publications, Sororities, etc. Across the entire front is the splendid Lounge with its open fire and old-fashioned 18 V id L U M IE XXX I I I mirror over the mantel. At Longwood are held the Set-up Conferences for the Y. W. C. A., the Music Festivals, the May Day exeixises, and the manv formal banquets given by the various organizations and sororities. The two most recent acquisitions are the log cabin and the out-of-door fireplace. Both of these are in the woods just beyond the amphitheater at Long-wood. The campus has been extended from time to time during Dr. Jarman ' s administration till now it covers five squares ( approximately twelve acres ) in the heart of the town. This does not include the President ' s home, several dwelling houses, and Longwood with its ninety acres of land. Among the many changes that have taken place during Dr. Jarman ' s administration, we mav note that the name of the institution has been changed twice. The old State Female Normal School existed as such from 1884 to 1914 when the Virginia Legislature changed it to State Normal School for Women. In 1918 the privilege of conferring degrees was granted, and in 1924 it became the present State Teachers College. Today, the State Teachers College at Farmville is not only a member of the American Association of Teachers Colleges, but it has membership also in the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Thus from this modest beginning has risen the splendid college of today with its beautiful buildings, its standard college courses leading to a B. S. degree in education, its up-to-date Campus Training School and three Rural Training Schools, its able faculty and its thousands of loyal alumnae scattered over the nation. 1 9 3 4 T H E V I E a I M IAN Fifty Years Ago or Less At first rooms were heated Uy arates ov Franklin stoves, one) Qtrls, built 1heir own -Tires | r j There were only kerosene lamps nicn Had to be kept brilliantly clean ataayt . Amidst laughter, spangles, glitter, and sparkling music, Meg Herndor, the masterful ringmaster, stepped forward and in a manner highly profes- sional introduced Man - Shelton, who, in turn, introduced the senior freaks to a fascinated and horrified crowd. Frankie McDaniel and Belle Lovelace, the skilled trainers of animals from the jungle, presented the wild animals from the junior class. Among those of especial interest were Andreona, the giraffe, a highly intelligent ani- mal, and Clementine, the elephant wonder direct from Africa. Next came forth a crowd of rollicking Wild West cowboys and cowgirls upon whom the mellow harvest moon cast an alluring light as they danced gleefully around a dying campfire. So perfect was their Wild West stunt that they were awarded the first prize. Soon twenty freshmen tumblers, clad in green shorts and white shirts, dashed forth so gayly and performed with such grace their death-defying feats that thev won the second prize. Following in the wake of the ring show and the grand parade was still more mirth, color, and flash. Rut suddenly the crowd grew breathless with wonder as to who the circus queen would be. Within a few seconds, Chub Denit, enthroned upon a snow-white chariot and clad in billowing pink tulle, was ushered in amidst the gayest applause and presented as the Queen of the Circus. For the remainder of the evening, Chub reigned supreme as the crowd grew merrier and merrier with dancing, sideshows, fortune-telling, etc. Promptly on the stroke of twelve ended the most mirthful of all S.
