[IVS] O L U ME X I I CLASS DAY EXERCISES As the little sisters line up with their big sisters for the last time, the seniors solemnl}- make read} to receive their diplomas. [179] o T H E AV I E C I N I A N V O L U M E XXXII The 1932 Circus November 5 was a t ala day at S. T. C, for the circus liad cnnic to tnwii! The streets of Farnn ille were cleared for the parade. And soon loug-coated elephants trudged wearily along; ferocious lions roared in their cages; and Little Mickey Mouse, reared l)ack in his cart, was followed 1) - a float filled with old-fashioned athletes, which, in turn, was trailed 1)y a car literally loaded with gum-shoes. Exj)ert bicycle riders and western cowboys attracted much attention as they dashed down the street, h ' ollowing close in their wake was the queen ' s wagon elaboratel}- decorated, but manned only l)y a pink ruffled dress stuffed into a shapely form with only a (piestion mark for a head. Tt was well known now that the mysterious (|ueen would not make herself known till the night jjerforman ce. The gvm was now a big circus tent. Here prom])t] - on the stroke of eight, as Marv Shelton, the ringmaster, cracked her whip, the show began. Each organization in school competed in tlie ring i)erformances for the prizes. Mickey Mouse (Dot Waynick ) and his orchestra, featuring llett) ' Boop (Margaret Gilmer) started the show off with l lriity of pe] . Then there was the mar-vel-ous magician who awed the audience by jiroduciug a real live S. T. C. rat. Margaret Parker, the stunning lion tamer, and four fero- cious lions bewitched the judges into presenting the juniors with the first prize. Soon, in romped the Music Club as brave cowboys on bucking broncos, stealing the second ])rize. Now came the Seniors! ' ery gruesome were these shining black canni])als as they ]iut ( )ld Man Dejjression into the caldron and boiled him till naught was left but bones. And after this, nothing was left for the Seniors but honorable mention! By popular vote the Who ' s Who of the circus were as follows: Pretti- est, Mary Shelton; cutest, Kathryn Koyster; funniest. Dot Davis: iiersonality plus, Margaret Gathright ; most liabyish, Eucy . nderson: fattest, Ruth Jordan ; and best-all-round, Jane Royall. But the climax of the whole circus came when the pink ruffled dress re- appeared stuiTed this time with Alice Moore, the real circus queen ! After the presentation of the (|ueen, the ring was cleared to give the side shows full sway. Thanks to them, the coffers of the campus organizations jingled with coins till Old Man Circus waved a farewell and shuflled off to his tent to make plans for 1933. — Jane Royai l. The high-salaried school teachers are, I hear : Marianna Robinson, Catherine Gannaway, Dorothy Wooton, of Columbia Lhiiversity ; Jessie Watkins, Josephine Wooding, of Smith : Patsy Watkins, Cornelia Watts, and Agnes Smith, of Vassar. Some are teaching in Europe. Helen Walthall, Frances Armistead, Madge Blalock, Mildred Burfoot, Evelyn Pearcy, Sarah Pitt- man. Alice Rodgers, Lois Cox, Doris Lane, and Virginia Linthicum are the fortunate few. 1 have been told that I ois Cox is getting $5,000 a •ear in a private school in Xaples ! According to the A ' . E. A. Journal, l- ' lizabeth F ' itzgerald is Xational President of Chilclhood Ivlucation. Fay Fuller is. 1 am told, teacher of l ,x])re si()n in a school for th ' Deaf, Dumb and lilind, and Mary Scales is the proprietor of the ' Virginia Balanced Institute. ' Many of us have won many honors. Elizabeth Walthall is winner of the National Non-Speaking Endurance Contest. Woodruth Towler is a world known commercial advertiser. Harriet Moomaw is the Olympic Basketball Champion. Judging by present records, Mary Gregor} ' will be the boxing champion of the world. And, my dear. Marguerite Massey has Joan Crawford completely in the dark ! Last week I took a guest to the Jefiferson. Lillian Woodley is the dietitian there, and she serves only foods that are guaranteed to make one slim ! Duvahl Ridgway, ()U know, is making a success as hostess at White Sulphur. Last summer, I was on the steamer, ' Fate, ' and Kathryn Waters was its captain ! It was there I saw Mary Thomas Rawls, who is now pro- prietor of the ' Empty Rawls Tea Room, ' Virginia Beach. To me the strangest thing about our class is that so few of us married ! And we ' ve been out of school ten years ! Let ' s see — only Martha Gunter, Leah Jane Shaw, Janet Harris, Sarah Rowell, Evelyn Shaw, Cora Lee Briggs, and I married. Don ' t you think it is strange? But, — what price, marriage ? I believe I ' ve told you about everybody except Helen Galey, who is the ' Pall and Hall Undertaker ' of Richmond. It will be simply grand if all the girls can be at Founder ' s Day next week, won ' t it? I ' ve had a terrible time finding their addresses. But I do hope they will all come! — Jane Royall, ' 33 o DREAMS COME TRUE jm n gTOMPui ' ii fiip ' ttiiiiiiig i|yj!rapt«iip DESIGNERS AMD ENGRAVES OF BETTEa ANNUALS Roll of Students, 1932-1933 Adams, Katherine...
