Maker of Men! We love thy noble sons and daughters, And cherish dear their countless deeds which, Great and small, each on each, Have made our Nation grand. Moulder of Lives! Proud is our heritage of Love and Life and Learning, Sweet are thy accents of Duty and of Law; Great to be native of thy reaping slopes and valleys, Great to sing thy praises wrapped in harmony divine, Yet, greater still, to mould a life, if but for thy forgetting, To keep thy noble Trust, To grasp thy Spirit true which leads The March of Humankind. — Olive Smith Bowman. i - «.-  ' •.••■'  . Of course, she was going to send the pin back. She didn ' t want to wear it anyhow, especially after what had just happened. No, she didn ' t mind sending it back, she was glad to be rid of it. Over and over Mary repeated these words, trying very hard to convince herself they were true. But then as she looked at the pin all the incidents that were connected with it came back to her. She had been happy during the months she had worn the pin, and, of course, had been in love with the owner. Yes, Bobby was a nice boy, even if he was a freshman. It was hard not to regret, just a little, that it was all over. Would life ever be quite the same? This thought came to Mary as she prepared to wrap up the pin. She had idealized Bobby; she had thought, just as every girl had since time began, that this was different; she and Bobby would not disagree as did so many of their friends. And then suddenly to have every happy dream of love and the future shattered! It was a terrible disillusionment, to say the least. Mary was quite sure she would never go out with another man. Still she gazed at the pin. Meantime her roommates chided with such remarks as these, Don ' t be silly, Mary; you are the dumbest ever, to waste a thought over that infant. Well, perhaps she was, but she comforted herself with the fact that she would never think about another boy. As the phone rang, Mary continued to pack his letters, picture, and miscel- laneous things in a box. She would send them the first thing in the morning, indeed she would. She would feel better after she had sent them, and she could settle down to a manless life. The phone continued to ring. No, she was not going to answer it. No one would call her up. Why should she be interested in the old phone? Oh, Mary, someone wishes to speak to you. Well, of all the nerve, to intrude upon the last thoughts she was ever going to waste on a man. As she went down the steps she repeated, No, indeed, no one need ask me for a date; I ' ve had my last one. But as she recognized the voice of Lloyd at the other end of the wire. another thought came to her mind. Why shouldn ' t she go out with other boys? She would show Bobby that it was all the same to her, whatever it cost her to do it. And Lloyd was cute; she had always liked Lloyd. Of course she was never, never going to love anyone else, — but, she might as well give Lloyd a date. — Alva Drummond. 132 -Zhe IDirgintatv FRE5HMQ1 .,- .,  . - .,- . - . - . ' '  .  . '  . '  . '  .  . '  . '  . ' . '  . ' . ' -:• be IDitGinian- ' «. ' •: There it rested against a background of dull gold — inviting her, mocking her, thrilling her, now infuriating her with a bitterness against her lot and now saturating her very soul with the ineffable, inexplicable sweetness always stirred into being by a thing of beauty, whether it be man ' s greatest creation or God ' s lowliest. It had a wide, soft brim and snug-fitting crown of most delicate orchid, with an alluring tinted rose peeping over the side of it right into one ' s face. Lois could actually feel its petals caress her cheek as she eyed it hungrily. And the shade! It would bring out all the lovely pink and white transparency of her skin and every light and shadow of her glinting, golden hair. It would — why, it would — . At this point she jerked herself up sharply, pulled the cheap little collar of the cheap little coat closely up under her chin, and swung away from the window like a soldier bidding a loved one farewell at the call of arms. She too must answer the battle call of an unfeeling world. Hurriedly and fiercely she walked for about one block; then she stopped short, wheeled about, and ran back at an undignified little-girl pace. Again she faced the hat, and again her eyes were filled with despair as the cold, unfriendly price-tag stared her in the face and jeered its $15.25 at her. Lois clutched her pocketbook tightly. She had, by some ironical coincidence, exactly fifteen dollars, two dimes, and five pennies with one spare penny for luck ! But the precious money was a whole week ' s salary, and there was the bill from the grocer, and the rent falling due in about a week, besides the thousand and one other expenses she somehow always incurred. But — Mr. Green would willingly let her run a monthly account, and the rent could wait a few days until mother ' s rich customers paid her for sewing night and day for them. Should she — ? Lois ' s fingers fumbled with the catch of her purse. There it was — fifteen dollars and twenty-five cents, and one cent left for luck ! And there, in front of her, beckoned a dream of the poets ! She wavered, and true to the old adage, was lost. Fled was the sight of Mother ' s worn face and weary fingers, gone was every scruple and misgiving, and each prick of conscience was defiantly ignored. With the air of one about to view fairyland, she approached the door of the shop, and — entered. She breathlessly announced her desire to the suave, smiling lady within, and waited, without stirring, while the latter went to the window to remove the hat. She was still staring ecstatically into space when the woman returned, empty handed, and with a voice full of diplomatic regret, explained that the hat had been sold, adding, of course, that they had others just as pretty. That evening as Lois burst into the door of their little apartment, and gaily flung down a week ' s salary, her mother was the recipient of so much hugging and kissing that she decided that her daughter must have met with some great happiness, as indeed she had. — Altie Chapel. 5 I 140 . r- k 4 «. •. .
