l-I4 F11 Top Lobo School days are the best days of a young person's life. Not only are they exciting, but they also are filled with numerous oppor- tunities for students to participate in wholesome activities that prepare kids for future success. The future belongs to those young peo- ple who seize the moment - who work diligently, who set goals and who learn to be flexible. My best feeling about schools and kids is summarized in the following quote: It is not the critic that counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or whether the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs, and often comes up short again and again. Who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause. And who, if at best in the end, knows triumph of Q higher treatment and high achievement. And who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly so that his soul shall never be with those cold and timid ones who know neither victory or defeat. Principal Robert McMinn coordinates and supervises the overall operation of Longview High School, while other duties include a variety of other tasks. Some duties include serving as a representative in the community in which he makes speeches encouraging public involvement with the school while others involve becoming interactive in campus organizations. The standing philosophy of LHS stands as follows: to acknowledge the wide range of abilities and educational needs of a diverse student population, to believe that a diverse population demands a diverse curriculum. to realize 66 FAC! 'LTI' Robert McMinn Principal that a well-prepared, devoted staff is the key to successful student performance, and the implementing of the com- prehensive instructional program is the shared respon- sibility of the students, school personnel, parents, and other community members. Each year new goals for LHS are set with optimistic views. This year's goals were set to increase student achievement, improve communications, and develop cit- izenship. LHS has improved substantailly from recent years and will continue to do so in the future.

Leaders of the Pack The Longview Independent School District, es- tablished in 1909, encompases 125 square miles in Longview located in Gregg County. The district is fully accredited by the Texas Education Associ- ation of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Serving a population of approximately 50,000, Longview ISD strives to prodvide a variety of quality educational opportunities in an outstanding instructional pro- gram. Longviewls Board of Education and Adminis- tration constantly seeks to improve upon the school system. The Board meets monthly to plan the agenda for the entire LISD and works with a budget QV QW? of 5B27,461,795. The seven members are elected for three-year terms and serve voluntarily without fi- nancial compensation. Office terms are staggared to insure continuity. Two members are elected each year for two years, and three members are elected every third year. Officers include a president, vice president, sec- retary, and assistant secretary who are elected to office by the Board members. All regular and special meetings are open to the public. Citizens and em- ployees are encouraged to attend and participate. The LISD Board of Education functions under the laws of the State of Texas and the policies it has established.
