We, the Editors of your an- nual, invite you to view with us, page by page, the past year at L.H.S. Share with us all the many wonderful memories that have typi- fied our high school days. As you peek through the keyhole at the opening of each section, may you see in pictures the loyal spirit that is evident everywhere at L.H.S. We wish to express our deepest appreciation for the countless hours of work and guidance of our spon- sor, Mrs. Wilson, and the always- faithful cooperation of our capable staff. Serving as your editors for this Peek Into the-Past has indeed been the most enjoyable, fun-filled, yet continually difficult, experience of our high school days. It is with great hope and ex- pectation that we give you your year at Longview High School. May you receive as much joy seeing it in this annual as you did living it. This being the Fiftieth Anniver- sary of the animal at Longview High School, touches of gold have been added in various parts of our book to commemorate this event. Through all the confusion, frustration, and despair, Ronnie and Jimmie carry on a fine job with the help of our sponsor, Mrs. Wilson, Putting out an annual is not an easy job. It takes hard work, much time, and effort. Many sacrifices have to be made in order to make pictures and dead- lines. These are the reasons that staff members are chosen for their cooperativeness, willingness to work in harmony, and their ability to learn knowledge of journalism in a short time. For in Longview High School there are no special journalism classes for annual workers. Each year the LOBO is graded by the Texas High School Press Association judges in the summer. Elected representatives, al- ternates, and officers make up the membership of the organiza- tion sponsored by Mr. Wester and Mrs. Roark. Some of the many worthwhile projects of the Council are to provide interesting assemblies for the student body, and to sell plastic covers and name plates for the LOBO. Each year the student directory is compiled by members of the Council and sold to raise funds for expenses. During the year special school dances are sponsored by the Student Council, This year for the first time the Council had a textbook Round-Up for the purpose of recovering and returning lost textbooks. In the spring the newly-elected officers attend the State Con- vention in Abilene. Officers' workshop this summer will again be attended. Delegates from the Council attended the annual East Texas Forum held this year in Greggton at Pine Tree High School. Bob Wfise and Diane Porter were elected Halloween King and Queen at the annual Halloween dance sponsored by the Student Council. To both vocational students and the industry of Longview this addition has been an im- portant one. It is of benefit to the student in that it prepares him for his chosen vocation, and of aid to our community in that it produces a supply for the demand for trained employees. These classes afford students of Junior and Senior standing both practical and theoretical training in a va- riety of trades and occupations. Practical work experiences are provided the student through part-time employ- ment each afternoon at some cooperating business or industry, within the city. Our school provides technical instruction under the supervision of Mr. Douglas Mackey. Students may enroll in two other high school subjects needed for graduation. The course is set up for two years of training and carries four affiliated credits. Students receive wages comparable to those paid beginning workers in the same occupations. Our Wilkie, truly the best-liked person ever to teach at Longview High School, is about to leave its halls. Those of us who have had plane geometry under him will never forget that class, undoubtedly the very coolest! Along with Plane G Mr. Wilkie's students also learned much about the history of L.H.S. Wilkie was here when they built the school! There are several things even his students were not told. Did you know that at one time our mascot was the Lion and that our school colors were black and gold? Who changed them-Wilkie, who else! At first Lobos was spelled Loboef. Wilkie also had a hand in the changing of this. Yes, Wilkie has been quite an influential leader in his career here as teacher, coach, athletic director, and friend. Speaking of coaches, the laughs that Wilkie brought forth as he told of his team's loss to Texarkana-107 to 7-were tremendous! Texarkana always seemed to give him trouble. A man riding out or town on the top of a school bus must have been an unforgettable sight, eh, Wilkie. To all of us Room 219 will always belong to our most favorite teacher. Mr. Wilkie, we'll never forget your class, the many things you did for usg and most of all, we'll never forget you! 644 fWJ,aff4if: You better get thisg it's on the final exam. fan everyday expression heard by Wilkie's studentsj Wilkie leisurely spends a class period eating his favorite. dessert, home-made ice cream.
