Pride in our school, in ourselves, and in our community has shown up many times over the school year. Once again our school had a successful cannedfoocl drive. Students also participated in the Longmont Unitea' Volunteers QLUVJ program. It has been oarpriale ana' our spirit that have maale Longs Peak a really great school, and we will always beproual ofit. life in Uur World Past and Present Foreign languages aren't the only ones to study foreign places. For example, 7th grade social studies classes took a look at the world around them. They studied South America, Europe, and all the other continents. Immigration, wars, and life in the past were among the many units studied by 8th grade students. American government and Colorado History were required for 9th graders. But for second and fourth quarters, they could take their choice between six and three week units on income tax, the Australian continent, ecology and the United Nations. Ninth grade social studies students taking the ecology unit listened to Mr. Ftick Lathrop, from the Environmental Protection Agency. Mrs. Morgan explains computer charts to Larry McCormick and Kathleen Brooks Q93 in the new computer math class: Math is more than just numbers, as was proved by our dedicated math teachers. There were several new courses available, including geometry and a computer class. Even basic algebra had a lot of variety, thanks to Mr. Ahnstedt. His course included a study of aerodynamics using paper airplanes, working on string sculptures, a double washer puzzle problemn, and creative enrichment posters. But Mr. Ahnstedt said that the most successful thing he had his classes do was algebraic story problems. Ms. Kelley taught 8th and 9th grade math, and the applied geometry class. In geometry, the students worked on several large- scaleprojects, such as plans for school buildings and private homes. Introduction to Computers was taught by Ms. Morgan. Brand new this year, the class had 19 members. They worked with computers, calculators, and slide rules, and went to the FAA in January. Julie l-largett l7l practices her addition, to Mrs. Kelley's dismay. Another skill learned in Mr. Ahnstedt's math classes---l'Creative enrichment posters. IVIATHI11 Everything from Worms to Stars This year's science classes involved more than just experiments and tests. Seventh graders dissected frogs and earthworms in studying life science. During the earth science course 8th graders studied rocks and minerals, clouds and the atmosphere, and did a short unit on astronomy. Physical science, for 9th graders, included studies on radiation, chemicals, and energy types: mechanical, chemical, potential, and kinetic, as well as the electromagnetic spectrum. 22 Stew O'Brien 179 gazes happily down at the worm he is dissecting for science 5 .4 Z H6-34581 gramsyn Calculates Martin Dadisman 185- Greg Atkins t9l, carefully measures out 30 grams of water. 12lSClENCE Mr. Austin's fourth period class studies hard for an upcoming test. Grammar, spelling, compostion, and literature all add up to a language arts course. Death Be Not Proud and Helen Keller were two of the video tapes that 7th grade students got to see. The 7th graders also presented the play, Ghost in the House. Eighth graders read the historical novel, Johnny Tremain, for the bicentennial year. Also a new system called tracking was used to determine the level of grammar for each student. The 9th grade students who really had an interest in language arts could take Communication Arts instead of Language Arts 9. This class had special units that were not otherwise offered: speech, semantics, and creative writing. All of the 9th grade classes went into the study of careers. For this unit they went to the Career Fair in Denver, March 8th, and had On-the-Job Day, Feb. 24. Nicky Romano 173 collects prepositions after a special unit in lang. arts is over. LANG ARTSH5 A Spanish Village, Menus, and More With the help of their teachers, Ms. Burns and Mr. Martinez, stu- dents in Spanish classes learned the basics of the language by studying dialogues, grammar, and the counting system. Some 7th graders built a Spanish village while others made up menus. A visit to the Foreign Language Festival in Denver was an extra for 9th graders. FOREIGN LANGUAGEH7 Guys Try Their Hands at Sewing The hum of sewing machines and the smell of baking usually fills the 300 hall. Why? Because some of the future homemakers of America are at work in our school. This year Home Economics wasn't just a girls' class. Five boys were enrolled, learning cooking, sewing, flower arranging, child care, and handcrafts. Home Ec is required for seventh grade girls, and the Home Ec l course included cooking, sewing, and child care. Home Ec ll students made jelly, dried and arranged flowers, and did more work on sewing, cooking, and child care. Students in third year Home Ec made pickles, cheese, and clothing. They also learned more about Italian cooking by visiting lVlarcantonio's Restaurant. P.E. can be a lot of fun, expecially to 9th graders who had co-ed tennis, golf, and bowling. Gymnastics, basketball, football, and wrestling were among the many activities required for boys in the P.E. classes. Girls' activities were from jump-roping to floor-ex to basketball, with everything in between. Girls' gymnastics was very successful this year. AFlT!25 Classical Music Still Has Place While string players can't march with the band, they can perform with the orchestra. Mr. Bailey was the orches- tra director, and was helped by Miss Donna Kopecky for part of the year. At various times, strings were joined by Mixed Chorus, Bluegrass Band, and an electric guitar. Along with all this variety was classical music, such as Beethoven's Ninth Sym- phony and The Masterpiece . Several ensembles, including a string quartet, a cello duet, and a woodwind quintet, came out of orchestra. Quite a few string players competed in the solo and ensemble contests in Feb- ruary and March, bringing home a lot of firsts for Longs Peak. l l Mr. Bailey gets involved while directing 6th period orchestra. And the Beat Goes Un Longs Peak had four bands this year Symphonic, Concert, and Red and White bands. New this year was the director, lvlr. Simpson, who previously taught at Longmont and Northeast Junior Highs. District Band Night was a big event in the fall, with the Longs Peak bands making a really good showing. Band members also marched in the Welcome Vance Brand, Pet and Doll, and Veteran's Day parades. ln addition, the bands participated in concerts in December and March. Symphonic Band, led by Mr. Simpson, performs in the spring Concert. A marching band member takes a break to tie his shoe BAND!27 Music Made More Personal Second and seventh periods were the most unusual ofthe music classes. Called Individualized Music and taught by Mr. Helmers, the students had an opportunity to learn to play guitar, piano, mandolin, banjo, and many other instruments. Some of them combined to make the Bluegrass Band and some others formed a rock band. The class was originally for those who wanted to play an instru- ment not used in band or orchestra, but novv there are also band students vvho take this course. The students do lesson packets, or TLU's, in addition to learning their instruments. Students Shaw Singing Talent Mr. l-lelmers and Ms. Shoemaker were busy again this year, with Vocal Music I, Girls' Chorus, Mixed Chorus, and 7th Grade Chorus. Mixed Chorus presented the musical, 'iTom Sawyer, ', and 7th Grade Chorus did a short musical skit. This was the first year Longs Peak had a 7th grade chorus, and it was very successful. Mised Chorus and Girls' Chorus combined and performed at the t'Stars of Tomorrow as an aftershow entertainment. They also toured the elementary schools to show the 6th graders some of the ways music branches out in junior high. Concerts and public performances were planned in cooperation with the instrumental music department. This, plus choreography, added variety to this years' vocal music. Tthgmde and girls choruses combine for a rehearsal in the auditeria. 29!VOCAL MUSIC Click, Click, Click, Zing! The individualized Typing l program successfully continued this year. Fundamental typing skills and a chance to improve speed and accuracy are basically what the course is all about. Writing to businesses for pictures or for specific information was a special unit for typing students. Some students did exceptionally well with high-speed timed typing tests. Some even got up as high as 50 to 60 words per minute. Mrs. Clark, the typing teacher, feels that students, with a little self-discipline and a lot of hard work, can master a skill they can and will use. Typing I students, Paula Rowell 193, Marri Cochran 483, Rob Sloan's Q93 head, Kurt Schlagel 193, and Kathleen Beavers 483, gather around Mrs. Clark's desk for help and advice. Everyone was in the Christmas mood so projects galore were being done. First of all, everyone wanted to be Santa Claus, so when we asked the kids to bring canned food for the needy people of Longmont, eneryone brought the food and brought it and brought it. But when the Teen Fair came along the journalism class decided to sell goodies. The 9th grade Lang Arts classes donated the food and plenty of it. Since it was time everyone was in the singing mood, so the 7th grade, girls chorus, and mixed chorus had to show us their great talents.
