Statistic-wise the Cats sported a poor win-lose record. Plfter dropping their opener to the traditionally strong Minden Whippets, 55-29, the l955-56 cagers could muster only a scant three wins from a l6 game schedule. Kearney victories came at the ex- pense of Holdrege, 58-49, Curtis, 63-60, and Gothenburg, 50-44. The Bearcats were beaten by North Platte twice, 62-57 and 88-48. Bon Beard, a junior guard, led the quartet with 185 points, 12.3 per game scoring average. Board Maintains High Standards Keeping the high standards of the Kearney school system during the past year was the job well done by the Board of Education. Many problems came before this very efficient group of men this year and through careful consideration for each problem they concluded another successful year of keeping Kearney High among the Class QQ school sys- tents One problem somewhat out of the ordinary this year was the bond issue for new schools in Kearney. The Board felt that present conditions warranted a new high school to replace Long- fellow High. The bond also set up funds for a new grade school and additional repairs for other schools. Pl city-wide election was held on November 7, but the issue was de- feated by less than lOU votes. School board members this past year were Dr. Harold Smith, president, Mr. loe B. Elliot, lr., Mr. George Munro, Mr. loseph Poynter, Mr. Elmer Divan and Dr. B. M. Gilmore. Mr. Everett Randall again served as the school attorney and Superintendent Paul M o r r i s worked for his ninth year with the board in carrying out their decisions. Page 61 Journalists Earn Membership Pins Problems, problems, nothing but prob- lems, is an often guoted statement in the journalism department. This statement, made by editors, re- porters, typists, copyreaders and any- one else connected to the journalism department, is the result of the many difficulties which are encountered in these students' efforts to obtain the much coveted Quill and Scroll. Two thousand points are needed be- fore a journalist can obtain this goal. These points are made by writing stories for the Echo or the Log, selling advertising or maintaining a staff position on either the Echo or the Log. Seven of the advanced journalists were in Quill and Scroll for the second year. Mr. Don Deselms, the journalism director, presents pins to the new Quill and Scroll members who are Ienny St. Iohn Elizabeth Robinson, lean Nelson. Pauline Sorenson, Barbara Reidy and Colene Mattison. Stan Carlson, lunior Quill and Scroll member, was presented a Silver Key award at the annual lournalism Day banquet in Lincoln on Hpril 28. Stan's award was for outstanding reporting in the field of sports. Members of this year's Quill and Scroll Club are lane Fales, Barbara Reidy.
